Asymmetry of the Ferroelectric Phase Transition in BaTiO 3

Symmetry changes during phase transformations fundamentally determine the behavior of thermodynamic systems, governing phenomena as diverse as water evaporation, fermion condensation, and epidemic spreading. Phase transitions are conventionally divided into two classes, and this classification is typically assumed to remain invariant upon reversing the transition. Here, an asymmetric phase transformation is uncovered in the ferroelectric–paraelectric transition of single-crystal BaTiO 3 , a model system for first-order transitions. Under slow temperature variation (≤0.1 °C min −1 ), thermodynamic, dielectric, and domain-structure measurements reveal that the ferroelectric-to-paraelectric transition exhibits latent heat, phase coexistence, and a discontinuous order parameter, while these signatures are absent upon cooling. Complementary phase-field simulations demonstrate similar behavior, attributing it to distinct elastic strain energy accumulation and release during heating and cooling. These findings reveal a first-order character upon heating but a second-order-like behavior upon cooling, challenging the conventional paradigm of symmetric phase-transition classification and suggesting new possibilities for ferroelectric-based energy storage.

Revealing Fast Cu-Ion Transport and Enhanced Conductivity at the CuInP 2 S 6 –In 4/3 P 2 S 6 Heterointerface

Van der Waals layered ferroelectrics, such as CuInP 2 S 6 (CIPS), offer a versatile platform for miniaturization of ferroelectric device technologies. Control of the targeted composition and kinetics of CIPS synthesis enables the formation of stable self-assembled heterostructures of ferroelectric CIPS and nonferroelectric In 4/3 P 2 S 6 (IPS). Here, we use quantitative scanning probe microscopy methods combined with density functional theory (DFT) to explore in detail the nanoscale variability in dynamic functional properties of the CIPS-IPS heterostructure. Within, we report evidence of fast ionic transport which mediates an appreciable out-of-plane electromechanical response of the CIPS surface in the paraelectric phase. Further, we map the nanoscale dielectric and ionic conductivity properties as we thermally stimulate the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition, recovering the local dielectric behavior during this phase transition. Finally, aided by DFT, we reveal a substantial and tunable conductivity enhancement at the CIPS/IPS interface, indicating the possibility of engineering its interfacial properties for next generation device applications.

Quantum fluctuations lead to glassy electron dynamics in the good metal regime of electron doped KTaO 3

One of the central challenges in condensed matter physics is to comprehend systems that have strong disorder and strong interactions. In the strongly localized regime, their subtle competition leads to glassy electron dynamics which ceases to exist well before the insulator-to-metal transition is approached as a function of doping. Here, we report on the discovery of glassy electron dynamics deep inside the good metal regime of an electron-doped quantum paraelectric system: KTaO 3 . We reveal that upon excitation of electrons from defect states to the conduction band, the excess injected carriers in the conduction band relax in a stretched exponential manner with a large relaxation time, and the system evinces simple aging phenomena—a telltale sign of glassy dynamics. Most significantly, we observe a critical slowing down of carrier dynamics below 35 K, concomitant with the onset of quantum paraelectricity in the undoped KTaO 3 . Our combined investigation using second harmonic generation technique, density functional theory and phenomenological modeling demonstrates quantum fluctuation-stabilized soft polar modes as the impetus for the glassy behavior. This study addresses one of the most fundamental questions regarding the potential promotion of glassiness by quantum fluctuations and opens a route for exploring glassy dynamics of electrons in a well-delocalized regime.

Mexican-hat potential energy surface in two-dimensional III 2 -VI 3 materials and the importance of entropy barrier in ultrafast reversible ferroelectric phase change

First-principles calculations reveal a Mexican-hat potential energy surface (PES) for two-dimensional (2D) In 2 Se 3 . This unique PES leads to a pseudo-centrosymmetric paraelectric β phase that resolves the current controversy between theory and experiment. We further show that while the α-to-β (ferroelectric-to-paraelectric) phase transition is fast and coherent, assisted by an in-plane shear phonon mode, a random distribution of the atoms in the trough of the PES acts as an entropy barrier against the reverse β-to-α transition. This will be the origin of the speed limitation of current In 2 Se 3 ferroelectric devices. Furthermore, if one orders the β phase (due to the formation of in-plane ferroelectric domains), the reverse transition can take place within tens of picoseconds in the presence of a perpendicular electric field. Finally, the Mexican-hat PES is a general feature for the entire family of 2D III 2 -VI 3 materials. Our finding offers a critical physical picture in controlling the ultrafast reversible phase transition in 2D In 2 Se 3 and other III 2 -VI 3 materials, which will benefit their practical industrial development for advanced ferroelectric devices.

Light-induced transitions of polar state and domain morphology of photoferroelectric nanoparticles

Using the Landau-Ginzburg-Devonshire approach, we study light-induced phase transitions, evolution of polar state and domain morphology in photo-ferroelectric nanoparticles (NPs). Light exposure increases the free carrier density near the NP surface and may in turn induce phase transitions from the nonpolar paraelectric to the polar ferroelectric phase. Using the uniaxial photo-ferroelectric Sn 2 P 2 S 6 as an example, here we show that visible light exposure induces the appearance and vanishing of striped, labyrinthine or curled domains and changes in the polarization switching hysteresis loop shape from paraelectric curves to double, pinched and single loops, as well as the shifting in the position of the tricritical point. Furthermore, we demonstrate that an ensemble of non-interacting photo-ferroelectric NPs may exhibit superparaelectric-like features at the tricritical point, such as strongly frequency-dependent giant piezoelectric and dielectric responses, which can potentially be exploited for piezoelectric applications.

Ferroelectric phase transition in group-IV monochalcogenides from an equivariant machine learned force field

Group-IV monochalcogenides are a class of layered ferroelectric semiconductors that have demonstrated spontaneous intrinsic polarization above room temperature. Here, in this study, we use the multi-atomic cluster expansion (MACE) machine learning architecture to train and test a force field capable of modeling the structural properties and second-order ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition in a Group-IV monochalcogenide, GeSe. The model captures the double-well potential energy surface associated with the onset of macroscopic polarization in bulk GeSe within 12.5 meV/atom, as well as near-equilibrium properties like the phonon dispersion. The development of this quantitatively accurate force field enables long-time molecular dynamics simulations, which predict the critical temperature of the ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition in bulk GeSe to be T c = 600 K. This study demonstrates the capabilities of equivariant force-fields to accurately describe phenomena associated with structural symmetry breaking.

Low frequency dielectric relaxation in boracites

In order to elucidate the nature of the imperfections which adversely affect pyroelectric processes in boracites, the thermal and dispersive characteristics of the low frequency dielectric response in iron-iodide boracite (Fe3B7O13I) and copper-chloride boracite (Cu3B7O13Cl) have been investigated. These characteristics were measured as a function of crystallographic orientation and applied field in both the ferroelectric and paraelectric states. The low frequency dielectric relaxation of 100 line oriented multi-domain copper-chloride boracite clearly indicates the dipole nature of the lattice imperfections. The activation energies calculated from a noninteracting Debye model, are 0.53 eV in the ferroelectric phase and 0.10 eV in the paraelectric phase.

Thin-Film Ferro Electric-Coupled Microstripline Phase Shifters With Reduced Device Hysteresis

This work deals with the performance of coupled microstripline phase shifters (CMPS) fabricated using BaxSr 1 -xTiO 3 (BST) ferroelectric thin films. The CMPS were fabricated using commercially available pulsed laser deposition BST films with Ba:Sr ratios of 30:70 and 20:80. Microwave characterization of these CMPS was performed at upper Kuband frequencies, particularly at frequencies near 16 and 18 GHz. X-ray diffraction studies indicate that the 30:70 films exhibit almost a 1:1 ratio between the in-plane and out-of-plane lattice parameters, suggesting that their cubics create strain -free films suitable for producing CMPS devices with reduced hysteresis in the paraelectric state. The quality of performance of the CMPS was studied based on their relative phase shift and insertion loss within the DC bias range of 0 to 400 V (i.e., E-field ranges within 0 to 53 V/micron). The performance of the CMPS was tested as a function of temperature to investigate their operation in the paraelectric, as well as in the ferroelectric, state (i.e., above and below the Curie temperature, respectively). The novel behavior discussed here is based on the experimental observation of the CMPS. This behavior, observed for the aforementioned cation ratio, highlights the relevance of good crystalline structure for high-quality CMPS.

Parameter-free prediction of phase transition in PbTiO 3 through combination of quantum mechanics and statistical mechanics

Thermodynamics of ferroelectric materials and their ferroelectric to paraelectric (FE-PE) transitions is commonly described by the phenomenological Landau theory and more recently by effective Hamiltonian and various potentials, all with model parameters fitted to experimental or theoretical data. Here, in this work, we show that the zentropy theory, which considers the total entropy of a system as a weighted sum of entropies of configurations that the system may experience and the statistical entropy among the configurations, can predict the FE-PE transition without fitting parameters. For PbTiO 3 , the configurations are identified as the FE configurations with 90- or 180° domain walls in addition to the ground state FE configuration without domain wall. With the domain wall energies predicted from first-principles based on density functional theory in the literature as the only inputs, the FE-PE transition for PbTiO 3 is predicted showing remarkable agreement with experiments, unveiling the microscopic fundamentals of the transition.

Exploring the Pb 1− x Sr x HfO 3 System and Potential for High Capacitive Energy Storage Density and Efficiency

Abstract The hafnate perovskites PbHfO 3 (antiferroelectric) and SrHfO 3 (“potential” ferroelectric) are studied as epitaxial thin films on SrTiO 3 (001) substrates with the added opportunity of observing a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in the Pb 1− x Sr x HfO 3 system. The resulting (240)‐oriented PbHfO 3 ( Pba 2) films exhibited antiferroelectric switching with a saturation polarization ≈53 µC cm −2 at 1.6 MV cm −1 , weak‐field dielectric constant ≈186 at 298 K, and an antiferroelectric‐to‐paraelectric phase transition at ≈518 K. (002)‐oriented SrHfO 3 films exhibited neither ferroelectric behavior nor evidence of a polar P 4 mm phase . Instead, the SrHfO 3 films exhibited a weak‐field dielectric constant ≈25 at 298 K and no signs of a structural transition to a polar phase as a function of temperature (77–623 K) and electric field (–3 to 3 MV cm −1 ). While the lack of ferroelectric order in SrHfO 3 removes the potential for MPB, structural and property evolution of the Pb 1− x Sr x HfO 3 (0 ≤ x < 1) system is explored. Strontium alloying increased the electric‐breakdown strength ( E B ) and decreased hysteresis loss, thus enhancing the capacitive energy storage density ( U r ) and efficiency (η). The composition, Pb 0.5 Sr 0.5 HfO 3 produced the best combination of E B = 5.12 ± 0.5 MV cm −1 , U r = 77 ± 5 J cm −3 , and η = 97 ± 2%, well out‐performing PbHfO 3 and other antiferroelectric oxides.

On the Ordering Mechanism of Cu + in 2D van der Waals Multiferroic CuCrP 2 S 6

CuCrP 2 S 6 is a van der Waals multiferroic where the tunable Cu + sublattice underpins its exceptional ferroelectric and electronic switching properties. Yet, the microscopic mechanism governing Cu + ordering has remained elusive. Here, we combine single-crystal X-ray and neutron diffraction with pair distribution function analysis to uncover a temperature-driven evolution of Cu + ordering, giving rise to an incommensurate quasi-antipolar phase between the paraelectric and antiferroelectric states. The modulation originates from correlated Cu + occupancy redistribution coupled to breathing distortion of surrounding S 3 triangles, establishing a symmetry-adapted lattice distortion mode. Diffuse scattering persisting over 35 K above the transition confirms that the structural instability follows an order-disorder mechanism. The spontaneous off-centering of Cu + positions CuCrP 2 S 6 as a model platform for correlated order-disorder phenomena in 2D layered ferroics, and provides design principles for next-generation memory and logic devices.

Dynamic control of ferroionic states in ferroelectric nanoparticles

The polar states of uniaxial ferroelectric nanoparticles interacting with a surface system of electronic and ionic charges with a broad distribution of mobilities is explored, which corresponds to the experimental case of nanoparticles in solution or ambient conditions. The nonlinear interactions between the ferroelectric dipoles and surface charges with slow relaxation dynamics in an external field lead to the emergence of a broad range of paraelectric-like, antiferroelectric-like ionic, and ferroelectric-like ferroionic states. The crossover between these states can be controlled not only by the static characteristics of the surface charges, but also by their relaxation dynamics in the applied field. Obtained results are not only promising for advanced applications of ferroelectric nanoparticles in nanoelectronics and optoelectronics, they also offer strategies for experimental verification.

The influence of cooling rates on strain phase diagrams and domain structures of ferroelectric thin films: A case study of PbTiO 3

Strain engineering has been established as an effective approach to control phase equilibria, domain configurations, and functional properties of ferroelectric thin films. Temperature-strain phase diagrams have been used as powerful tools for providing insights into strain engineering. However, almost all existing phase diagrams established using the phase-field approach assume quenching conditions without considering actual cooling rates during the post-deposition annealing process of ferroelectric thin films. Within this work, we systematically investigate the influence of cooling rates on domain structures and the strain-phase diagram of ferroelectric thin films using phase-field simulations, taking PbTiO 3 thin films as a model system. We found that both the position of phase boundaries in the strain phase diagrams and the domain morphology are significantly influenced by the cooling rates. It is revealed that while the paraelectric-ferroelectric phase boundary remains invariant, the phase boundaries between single-phase and multi-phase regions tend to shift toward the corresponding multi-phase region as the cool rate reduces. Slow cooling generally leads to more ordered domain structures with increased domain size. Using the obtained equilibrium domain structures, we calculated effective thermal conductivities and found significant variations that can be tuned by the cooling rates. In conclusion, this work reveals an underexplored yet critical impact of cooling rates on phase equilibria and domain structures in ferroelectric thin films, which may inspire further fine-tuning of domains and domain walls in low-dimensional ferroelectrics for multifunctional applications.

Kinetic Understanding of Field-Induced Phase Transition from Tetragonal to Ferroelectric Orthorhombic Phase in Ferroelectric CeO 2 –HfO 2 –ZrO 2 Films

The ferroelectric properties and structural phase transition behaviors of fluorite-type CeO 2 −HfO 2 −ZrO 2 films were investigated. The epitaxial films on indium tin oxide (ITO) (111)/yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) (111) substrates were grown through pulsed laser deposition at room temperature and subsequently heat-treated at 1000 °C under a N 2 gas flow. The crystalline phases and Curie temperatures of the films were investigated by X-ray diffraction. An increase in the Ce or Zr content in the films led to a higher crystallographic symmetry, such as orthorhombic or tetragonal. In addition, electrical characterization revealed that the orthorhombic films and some of the tetragonal films displayed ferroelectricity. This was due to the field-induced phase transition from the tetragonal to ferroelectric orthorhombic phase in the films, where the Curie temperatures were relatively low. The tetragonal metastable phase was kinetically frozen and could not change into the stable orthorhombic phase at such a low temperature. The critical electric field where the field-induced phase transition occurred was below 0.8 MV/cm, which was sufficiently small compared to the coercive field. These results evidence the kinetic driving force that causes a field-induced phase transition from the paraelectric tetragonal phase to the ferroelectric orthorhombic phase in HfO 2 -based ferroelectrics. They also enhance our understanding of the thermodynamic phase stabilities of HfO 2 -based material polymorphs.

Chemical Design of Pb-Free Relaxors for Giant Capacitive Energy Storage

Dielectric capacitors have captured substantial attention for advanced electrical and electronic systems. Developing dielectrics with high energy density and high storage efficiency is challenging owing to the high compositional diversity and the lack of general guidelines. Herein, we propose a map that captures the structural distortion ($\delta$) and tolerance factor (t) of perovskites to design Pb-free relaxors with extremely high capacitive energy storage. Our map shows how to select ferroelectric with large $\delta$ and paraelectric components to form relaxors with a t value close to 1 and thus obtaining eliminated hysteresis and large polarization under a high electric breakdown. Taking the Bi 0.5 Na 0.5 TiO 3 -based solid solution as an example, we demonstrate that composition-driven predominant order-disorder characteristic of local atomic polar displacements endows the relaxor with a slushlike structure and strong local polar fluctuations at several nanoscale. This leads to a giant recoverable energy density of 13.6 J cm -3 , along with an ultrahigh efficiency of 94%, which is far beyond the current performance boundary reported in Pb-free bulk ceramics. In conclusion, our work provides a solution through rational chemical design for obtaining Pb-free relaxors with outstanding energy-storage properties.

A combinatory ferroelectric compound bridging simple ABO 3 and A-site-ordered quadruple perovskite

The simple ABO 3 and A-site-ordered AA' 3 B 4 O 12 perovskites represent two types of classical perovskite functional materials. There are well-known simple perovskites with ferroelectric properties, while there is still no report of ferroelectricity due to symmetry breaking transition in A-site-ordered quadruple perovskites. Here we report the high pressure synthesis of an A-site-ordered perovskite PbHg 3 Ti 4 O 12 , the only known quadruple perovskite that transforms from high-temperature centrosymmetric paraelectric phase to low-temperature non-centrosymmetric ferroelectric phase. The coordination chemistry of Hg 2+ is changed from square planar as in typical A-site-ordered quadruple perovskite to a rare stereo type with 8 ligands in PbHg 3 Ti 4 O 12 . Thus PbHg 3 Ti 4 O 12 appears to be a combinatory link from simple ABO 3 perovskites to A-site-ordered AA' 3 Ti 4 O 12 perovskites, sharing both displacive ferroelectricity with former and structure coordination with latter. This is the only example so far showing ferroelectricity due to symmetry breaking phase transition in AA' 3 B 4 O 12 -type A-site-ordered perovskites, and opens a direction to search for ferroelectric materials.
