Ultrafast relaxation of acoustic and optical phonons in a topological nodal-line semimetal ZrSiS

Recently, nodal line semimetals based on ZrSiS-family have garnered massive research interests contributing numerous experimental and theoretical works. Despite being the most studied nodal-line semimetal, a clear understanding of the transient state relaxation dynamics and the underlying mechanism in ZrSiS is lacking. Using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we study the ultrafast relaxation dynamics in ZrSiS and reveal a unique relaxation in the bulk nodal-line state which is well-captured by a simple model based on optical and acoustic phonon cooling. Our model predicts linear decay processes for both optical and acoustic phonon relaxations with optical cooling dominant at higher temperatures. Our results reveal different decay mechanisms for the bulk and surface states and pave a way to understand the mechanism of conduction in this material.

The Dynamical Role of Optical Phonons and Sublattice Screening in a Solid-State Ion Conductor

Solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) require ionic conductivities that are competitive with liquid electrolytes to realize applications in all-solid-state batteries. Although candidate SSEs have been discovered, the underlying mechanisms enabling superionic conduction (>1 mS cm –1 ) remain elusive. In particular, the role of ultrafast lattice dynamics in mediating ion migration, which involves couplings between ions, phonons, and electrons, is rarely explored experimentally at their corresponding time scales. To investigate the complex contributions of coupled lattice dynamics on ion migration, we modulate the charge density occupations within the crystal framework and then measure the time-resolved change in impedance on picosecond time scales for a candidate SSE, Li 0.5 La 0.5 TiO 3 (LLTO). Upon perturbation, we observe enhanced ion migration at ultrafast time scales. The respective transients match the time scales of optical and acoustic phonon vibrations, suggesting their involvement in ion migration. We further computationally evaluate the effect of a charge transfer from the O 2p to the Ti 3d band on the electronic and physical structure of LLTO. We hypothesize that the charge-transfer excitation distorts the TiO 6 polyhedra by altering the local charge density occupancy of the hopping site at the migration pathway saddle point, thereby causing a reduction in the migration barrier for the Li + hop. We rule out the contribution of photogenerated electron carriers and laser heating. Overall, our investigation introduces a new spectroscopic tool to probe fundamental ion hopping mechanisms transiently at ultrafast time scales, which has previously only been achieved in a time-averaged manner or solely via computational methods.

Terahertz lasers and amplifiers based on resonant optical phonon scattering to achieve population inversion

The present invention provides quantum cascade lasers and amplifier that operate in a frequency range of about 1 Terahertz to about 10 Terahertz. In one aspect, a quantum cascade laser of the invention includes a semiconductor heterostructure that provides a plurality of lasing modules connected in series. Each lasing module includes a plurality of quantum well structure that collectively generate at least an upper lasing state, a lower lasing state, and a relaxation state such that the upper and the lower lasing states are separated by an energy corresponding to an optical frequency in a range of about 1 to about 10 Terahertz. The lower lasing state is selectively depopulated via resonant LO-phonon scattering of electrons into the relaxation state.

Footprints of Kitaev spin liquid in the Fano lineshape of Raman-active optical phonons

We develop a theoretical description of the Raman spectroscopy in the spin-phonon-coupled Kitaev system and show that it can provide observable signatures of fractionalized excitations characteristic of the underlying spin-liquid phase. In particular, we obtain the explicit form of the phonon modes and construct the coupling Hamiltonian based on the D 3d symmetry. We then systematically compute the Raman intensity and show that the spin-phonon coupling renormalizes phonon propagators and generates the salient Fano lineshape. We find that the temperature evolution of the Fano lineshape displays two crossovers, and the low-temperature crossover shows pronounced magnetic-field dependence. We thus identify the observable effect of the Majorana fermions and the Z2 gauge fluxes encoded in the Fano lineshape. Our results are consistent with the phonon Raman scattering experiments in the candidate material α-RuCl 3 .

Electronic, direct optical, and phonon-assisted optical properties of 4H Si from first principles

The cubic polytype of silicon (Si) is the most commercialized semiconductor material and finds applications in numerous electronic and optoelectronic devices, such as solar cells. However, recent reports on the synthesis of the hexagonal 4H Si polytype have attracted the attention of the scientific community to understand its functional properties. Here, we report the electronic, vibrational, and optical properties of the 4H Si polytype obtained with predictive first-principles calculations, with an emphasis of phonon-assisted absorption in the indirect regime. Compared to the cubic polytype, 4H Si shows a slightly narrower indirect gap by ∼0.05 eV. The calculated phonon-assisted optical spectra show that 4H Si exhibits a stronger absorption coefficient than cubic Si across the visible and IR spectral regions. We further evaluate the short-circuit current density of textured thin-films. We demonstrate that 4H Si can achieve the same short-circuit current density for a five times thinner film compared to the cubic polytype, which mainly resulted from absorption in the indirect gap regime. Our work demonstrates the advantages of 4H Si for thin-film silicon-based solar-cell applications.

High Field Transport in (Ultra) Wide Bandgap Semiconductors: Diamond Versus Cubic GaN

We provide an analysis of nonlinear transport in diamond and cubic GaN (c-GaN) with emphasis on the different types of optical phonon scattering [i.e., optical deformation potential (ODP) scattering versus polar optic phonon (POP) scattering] limiting the carrier velocity. Both types of carrier mobilities and carrier saturation (peak) velocities in diamond and c-GaN as functions of different doping types and concentrations are obtained by directly solving the Boltzmann equation. Our model indicates that the nonrandomizing nature of POP scattering causes carrier temperature cooling, resulting in higher carrier drift velocity than with ODP scattering. This effect, in addition to the small carrier effective masses and large optical phonon energies, is responsible for the higher peak velocities in c-GaN, compared to carrier drift velocity in diamond.

Ferroaxial phonons in chiral and polar Ni⁢Co 2 ⁢Te⁢O 6

Perfect circular dichroism has been observed in Raman scattering by optical phonons in single chiral domain NiCo 2 TeO 6 crystals. The selection rules for optical phonons are determined by the combination of the chiral structure C and electric polarization P along the c axis. These two symmetry operations are equivalent to the ferroaxial order (C·P) = A, so the observed optical phonons are referred to as ferroaxial. For a given Raman scattering geometry, the observed effect may also be described as a perfect nonreciprocal propagation of the ferroaxial optical phonons, whose preferable q-vector direction is determined by the sign of A. Here, the combination of Raman scattering and polarization plane rotation of the transmitted white light allows for identification of the direction of electric polarization P in monodomain chiral crystals. In addition to the ferroaxial selection rules for optical phonons, a weaker ferroaxial dichroism was observed for the magnon peak at 18 cm −1 .

Spontaneously formed phonon frequency combs in van der Waals solid CrGeTe 3 and CrSiTe 3

Optical phonon engineering through nonlinear effects has been utilized in ultrafast control of material properties. However, nonlinear optical phonons typically exhibit rapid decay due to strong mode-mode couplings, limiting their effectiveness in temperature or frequency sensitive applications. Here we report the observation of long-lived nonlinear optical phonons through the spontaneous formation of phonon frequency combs in the van der Waals material CrXTe 3 (X=Ge, Si) using high-resolution Raman scattering. Unlike conventional optical phonons, the highest A g mode in CrGeTe 3 splits into equidistant, sharp peaks forming a frequency comb that persists for hundreds of oscillations and survives up to 200K. These modes correspond to localized oscillations of Ge 2 Te 6 clusters, isolated from Cr hexagons, behaving as independent quantum oscillators. Introducing a cubic nonlinear term to the harmonic oscillator model, we simulate the phonon time evolution and successfully replicate the observed comb structure. Similar frequency comb behavior is observed in CrSiTe 3 , demonstrating the generalizability of this phenomenon. Our findings demonstrate that Raman scattering effectively probes high-frequency nonlinear phonon modes, offering insight into the generation of long-lived, tunable phonon frequency combs with potential applications in ultrafast material control and phonon-based technologies.

Hybrid phonon-enhanced optical absorbers and emitters

A semiconductor optical device is comprised of a phonon donating material structurally connected to an indirect bandgap material to improve absorption and emission of light in the indirect bandgap material. An excitation energy source provides excitation radiation to the semiconductor optical device to excite electrons in the semiconductor optical device. Phonons from the phonon donating material present in the indirect bandgap material provide a mechanism for increased rates of electron-hole generation and recombination, and electrical leads provide an electrical connection to the semiconductor optical device.
