Review of image correlation systems - Hybrid and optical

The operating principles, design, and development histories of three image correlation systems, the Portable Correlator Unit (PCU), the Miniature Correlator Unit (MCU), and the Coherence Interferometer (CI) are reviewed. The PCU and MCU are compact versions of the classical Vander Lught filter optical correlator, essentially parallel optical processors by light valve; the CI is a white-light correlator which functions entirely by interfering light waves, with electronic detection only at the final output, and thus represents a parallel optical processor by rotational-shear interferometer. Details of the design and construction are discussed and illustrated with drawings and photographs. Also considered are applications of the MCU to NASA tasks such as rendezvous and docking on the Mars Rover and Sample Return mission, autonomous robotic exploration of planetary surfaces, and compression and pattern-recognition of remote-sensing data.

Hybrid image processing

Partly-digital, partly-optical 'hybrid' image processing attempts to use the properties of each domain to synergistic advantage: while Fourier optics furnishes speed, digital processing allows the use of much greater algorithmic complexity. The video-rate image-coordinate transformation used is a critical technology for real-time hybrid image-pattern recognition. Attention is given to the separation of pose variables, image registration, and both single- and multiple-frame registration.

High power handling digitizer using photonics

Devices, methods for analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) that perform high-dynamic range measurements based on optical techniques are disclosed. In one example aspect, an optical encoder includes a polarization rotator configured to receive a train of optical pulses, and an electro-optic (EO) modulator coupled to an output of the polarization rotator. The EO modulator is configured to receive a radio frequency (RF) signal and to produce a phase modulated signal in accordance with the RF signal. The optical encoder also includes a polarizing beam splitter coupled to the output of the EO modulator; and an optical hybrid configured to receive two optical signals from the polarizing beam splitter and to produce four optical outputs that are each phase shifted with respect to one another.

Micro-optics technology and sensor systems applications

The current generation of electro-optical sensors utilizing refractive and reflective optical elements require sophisticated, complex, and expensive designs. Advanced-technology-based electro-optical sensors of minimum size and weight require miniaturization of optical, electrical, and mechanical devices with an increasing trend toward integration of various components. Micro-optics technology has the potential in a number of areas to simplify optical design with improved performance. This includes internally cooled apertures, hybrid optical design, microlenses, dispersive multicolor microlenses, active dither, electronically controlled optical beam steer, and microscopic integration of micro-optics, detectors, and signal processing layers. This paper describes our approach to the development of micro-optics technology with our main emphasis for sensors applications.

Fiber optic system for direct detection of CO 2 leakage in carbon storage wells (Abbreviated Final Report)

The feasibility study focused on the development of new fiber for distributed chemical sensing that will allow direct detection of CO2 leakages in the environment. This is particularly important for monitoring well integrity for carbon capture and storage (CSS), which can provide early warning for an incoming well failure and potential CO2 leaking through it. We proposed Raman or IR interrogation within gas-filled Holey Fibers (HoFs) interleaved with Fiber Bragg Grating (FBG) sections, so that the location and concentration of the gases would be provided simultaneously. The methodology would overcome current roadblocks to using fiber optics for CO2 (and other gases) detection in wells with direct in-situ measurements of concentration along with other important parameters such as temperature and pressure. We were able to assess commercially available IR/Raman hollow core fiber and demonstrated detection of CO2 through them in our controlled environment setups at various pressure conditions. We have also established the ability of drilling precisely with fs-lases side holes to enable penetration of CO2 into the hollow core fiber and reduce diffusion rates. Open joint collars were also explored with double functionality: to obtain splice to solid core fiber critical for field deployment and create gas ingress locations. Both diffusion-only and pressurized fiber system have been constructed following COMSOL based semi-hybrid optical /fluidodynamics models. FBGs have been identified and procured and characterized. Along the work we leveraged internal modeling/design, photonics/laser characterization, optical fiber fabrication, and AM lab capabilities to design, develop and test in-house components or assemblies. Our results indicate the potential of HoF for CO2 downhole direct detection.

Architectural and Operational Considerations Emerging from Hybrid RF-Optical Network Loading Simulations

We have the technical capability to model hybrid deep-space RF and Optical communications networks, but we have little guidance on how the missions and ground architectures will be designed and operated. We exposed several issues that must be resolved before an optimal solution can be reached. With future studies, we may be able to determine solutions to these issues, and perform more precise loading performance analyses to arrive at the most optimal RF and optical ground assets combinations for meeting the projected future demand. The results will then help inform NASA as it plans for infrastructure development to prepare for human/robotic missions in the coming decades.

Cavity-Assisted Coherent Phonon Generation and Control in a WSe 2 /Au Structure

Coherent phonons in the Terahertz (THz) regime have gained attention as potential candidates for next-generation high-speed, low-energy information carriers in atomically thin phononic or phonon-integrated on-chip devices. Nevertheless, achieving efficient control over THz coherent phonons continues to pose a considerable challenge. In this work, we explore THz coherent phonon generation in exfoliated van der Waals (vdW) flakes of WSe 2 on Au (WSe 2 /Au) and Si (WSe 2 /Si) using time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy. The generation of THz coherent phonons was studied as a function of WSe 2 layer thickness and laser wavelength. Notably, a significant enhancement in THz coherent phonon generation was observed in the WSe 2 /Au structure, but only within specific ranges of WSe 2 thickness and laser wavelength. Further, the results from numerical simulations, which consider a self-hybridized optical cavity depending on WSe 2 thickness, along with optical reflectance and Raman spectroscopy measurements, aligned well with the time-domain observations of THz coherent phonon generation. We propose that the observed enhancement in THz coherent phonon generation is strongly influenced by light-matter interaction in the WSe 2 cavity, a mechanism that may be applicable to a broader range of vdW materials. These findings offer promising insights for the development of THz phononic or phonon-integrated devices.

An alternative method of changing the pulse duration in a stretcher-compressor pair by changing the gas pressure in the compressor

The relatively narrow bandwidth of neodymium glass requires a much larger stretch ratio of chirped-pulse amplification (CPA) systems. This factor, together with a large incident angle on the gratings, makes glass CPA systems extremely sensitive to the refractive index of the medium in the stretcher-compressor. High sensitivity of the stretcher-compressor pair for hybrid optical parametric chirped-pulse amplification and an Nd:glass laser to the refractive index was demonstrated in air, vacuum, and carbon dioxide, and a pulse duration close to the transform limit was reached. An alternative way to change the pulse duration was proposed. The pulse duration from the best compression of 500 fs to 30 ps was smoothly varied by changing the air pressure from 10 -6 Torr to 1 atm in the compressor and up to 52 ps in carbon dioxide, while the stretcher and compressor remained untouched. Finally, excellent agreement of the measured pulse duration with theoretical calculations was demonstrated.

Synthetic estimation filters for a control system

Hybrid optical correlators, which use spatial light modulators and solid state imagers to interface computers and optical Fourier correlators, will allow the rapid changing of filters and digital pre- or post-correlation processing in vision systems. However, optical correlation (particulary with phase-only filtration) is notoriously sensitive to mismatches of rotation and magnification between the reference image and the input image. Such sharpness is not always desirable if the correlation pattern is to be used in a control system. Two methods of conforming the response of an inherently sharp-response optical correlation to an in plane rotation between reference and object images are discussed. The objective is to condition the correlation for better suitability to a vision-controlled system. The first method is controlled convolutional blurring of a reference image followed by construction of a matched filter (perhaps implemented as a phase-only filter). An alternative is discussed in more detail: it is a synthesis from sharp filters, so weighted as to produce a specified off-center behavior.

Design of a composite filter realizable on practical spatial light modulators

Hybrid optical correlator systems use two spatial light modulators (SLM's), one at the input plane and the other at the filter plane. Currently available SLM's such as the deformable mirror device (DMD) and liquid crystal television (LCTV) SLM's exhibit arbitrarily constrained operating characteristics. The pattern recognition filters designed with the assumption that the SLM's have ideal operating characteristic may not behave as expected when implemented on the DMD or LCTV SLM's. Therefore it is necessary to incorporate the SLM constraints in the design of the filters. In this report, an iterative method is developed for the design of an unconstrained minimum average correlation energy (MACE) filter. Then using this algorithm a new approach for the design of a SLM constrained distortion invariant filter in the presence of input SLM is developed. Two different optimization algorithms are used to maximize the objective function during filter synthesis, one based on the simplex method and the other based on the Hooke and Jeeves method. Also, the simulated annealing based filter design algorithm proposed by Khan and Rajan is refined and improved. The performance of the filter is evaluated in terms of its recognition/discrimination capabilities using computer simulations and the results are compared with a simulated annealing optimization based MACE filter. The filters are designed for different LCTV SLM's operating characteristics and the correlation responses are compared. The distortion tolerance and the false class image discrimination qualities of the filter are comparable to those of the simulated annealing based filter but the new filter design takes about 1/6 of the computer time taken by the simulated annealing filter design.

Flow Visualization in Evaporating Liquid Drops and Measurement of Dynamic Contact Angles and Spreading Rate

A new hybrid optical system, consisting of reflection-refracted shadowgraphy and top-view photography, is used to visualize flow phenomena and simultaneously measure the spreading and instant dynamic contact angle in a volatile-liquid drop on a nontransparent substrate. Thermocapillary convection in the drop, induced by evaporation, and the drop real-time profile data are synchronously recorded by video recording systems. Experimental results obtained from this unique technique clearly reveal that thermocapillary convection strongly affects the spreading process and the characteristics of dynamic contact angle of the drop. Comprehensive information of a sessile drop, including the local contact angle along the periphery, the instability of the three-phase contact line, and the deformation of the drop shape is obtained and analyzed.

Architectural and Operational Considerations Emerging from Hybrid RF-Optical Network Loading Simulations

A technology demonstration of free space optical communication at interplanetary distances is planned via one or more future NASA deep-space missions. Such demonstrations will “pave the way” for operational use of optical communications on future robotic/potential Human missions. Hence, the Deep Space Network architecture will need to evolve. Preliminary attempts to model the anticipated future mission set and simulate how well it loads onto assumed architectures with combinations of RF and optical apertures have been evaluated. This paper discusses the results of preliminary loading simulations for hybrid RF-optical network architectures and highlights key mission and ground infrastructure considerations that emerge.
