Opportunistic Arraying

This paper discusses recent activities at JPL that are focused on extending the Opportunistic Multiple Spacecraft Per Antenna (OMSPA) concept to include arraying multiple antennas. Specifically, we explore the ability to process multiple open loop recordings associated with multiple antennas and perform the appropriate alignment and combining. We focus on using the symbol stream combining technique and provide examples of performance measurements on actual spacecraft signals for MarCO A and B as well as the Mars Express.

Rainfall Field Reconstruction by Opportunistic Use of the Rain- Induced Attenuation on Microwave Satellite Signals: The July 2021 Extreme Rain Event in Germany as a Case Study

This paper presents a practical application of an opportunistic technique for the estimation of rainfall intensity and accumulated precipitation. The proposed technique is based upon signal strength measurements made by commercial-grade interactive satellite terminals. By applying some processing, the rain-induced attenuation on the microwave downlink from the satellite is first evaluated; then the rain attenuation is eventually mapped into a rainfall rate estimate via a tropospheric model. This methodology has been applied to a test area of 30 × 30 km 2 around the city of Dortmund (North Rhine-Westphalia, upper basin of Ermscher river), for the heavy rain event that devastated western Germany in July, 2021. A rainfall map on this area is obtained from the measurements collected by a set of satellite terminals deployed in the region, and successfully compared with a map obtained with a conventional weather radar.

Graphics processor unit with opportunistic inter-path reconvergence

A graphics processing unit and methods for comping and executing instructions with opportunistic inter-path reconvergence are provided. A graphics processing unit may access computer executable instructions mapped to code blocks of a control flow for a warp. The code blocks may include an immediate dominator block and an intermediate post dominator block. The graphics processing unit may store a first thread mask associated with the first code block. The first thread mask may include a plurality of bits indicative of the active or non-active status for the threads of the warp, respectively. The graphics processing unit may a second thread mask corresponding to an intermediate code block between the immediate dominator block and intermediate post dominator block. The graphics processing unit may execute, with threads indicated as active by the first thread mask, instructions of the intermediate code block with a first operand or a second operand depending on the second thread mask.

Opportunistic Short‐Term Water Uptake Dynamics by Subalpine Trees Observed via In Situ Water Isotope Measurements

Abstract Variations in tree water sources are important to understand in semi‐arid ecosystems because climatic shifts towards lower snowpack and increased drought affect water availability in subalpine forests of the western US. Here, we use daily in situ measurements of stable isotopes ( 2 H & 18 O) in soil and tree stem water, soil matric potential and sap flow to study tree water uptake dynamics. We instrumented three soil profiles down to 90 cm, as well as three aspen and engelmann spruce trees near Gothic, Colorado, in the East River watershed. We observed the fate of natural isotopic variations in rainfall, soil, and plants from June to October 2022, and in August 2023 we conducted a 2 H labeled irrigation experiment. Our observations showed that all studied aspen trees compensated for water scarcity in the shallow soil by shifting the dominant water source at 60(±20) cm to ⅔ of uptake from 90 cm within a few days of a dry period. Both species relied on snowmelt stored in the subsoil to sustain transpiration. Intense rainfall caused the plant water uptake to shift partially to top soil layers within 2 days. Spruce transpiration was lower and relied more on snowmelt, because rainfall infiltration was low in the spruce stand due to high canopy interception. Our findings highlight the important role of snowmelt stored in the deep soil layers for subalpine forest drought response and the dominant fate of monsoonal rainfall to become transpiration rather than recharging groundwater and streams in the Upper Colorado River. Plain Language Summary There is a need to understand how trees in mountainous regions respond to dry conditions that lead to water scarcity, because climate projections suggest that such conditions will become more frequent in the future. Here we present a novel data set of measurements of daily stable isotopes of water across soil profiles and in tree stems of aspen and spruce. Our data show that when the upper soil dried out, aspen trees shifted to using water from deeper layers (beneath 60 cm) to keep transpiring. For spruce trees the uptake pattern is less clear, but both types of trees mainly used snowmelt stored in the deeper soil layers to survive the dry summer. After heavy rain, aspen and spruce trees switched to using water from the top 20 cm of soil. However, for spruce, only some rain reached the soil because the dense tree canopy intercepted it, so spruce trees stayed more dependent on snowmelt and used less water overall. This study shows how important deep snowmelt water is for helping forests survive dry periods and suggests that most summer rain is quickly used by trees rather than replenishing streams and groundwater in the headwaters of the Colorado River. Key Points Tree water resources changed within a few days from snow dominated to higher share of rainfall as soils wetted up after a dry period Compensatory plant water uptake by aspen from the deep layer (90 cm), while uptake from soil depths that became drier (60 cm) declined Strong differences between water sources and availability beneath aspen and spruce, respectively

Pseudouridine synthase 7 is an opportunistic enzyme that binds and modifies substrates with diverse sequences and structures

Pseudouridine (Ψ) is a ubiquitous RNA modification incorporated by pseudouridine synthase (Pus) enzymes into hundreds of noncoding and protein-coding RNA substrates. Here, in this study, we determined the contributions of substrate structure and protein sequence to binding and catalysis by pseudouridine synthase 7 (Pus7), one of the principal messenger RNA (mRNA) modifying enzymes. Pus7 is distinct among the eukaryotic Pus proteins because it modifies a wider variety of substrates and shares limited homology with other Pus family members. We solved the crystal structure of Saccharomyces cerevisiae Pus7, detailing the architecture of the eukaryotic-specific insertions thought to be responsible for the expanded substrate scope of Pus7. Additionally, we identified an insertion domain in the protein that fine-tunes Pus7 activity both in vitro and in cells. These data demonstrate that Pus7 preferentially binds substrates possessing the previously identified UGUAR (R = purine) consensus sequence and that RNA secondary structure is not a strong requirement for Pus7-binding. In contrast, the rate constants and extent of Ψ incorporation are more influenced by RNA structure, with Pus7 modifying UGUAR sequences in less-structured contexts more efficiently both in vitro and in cells. Although less-structured substrates were preferred, Pus7 fully modified every transfer RNA, mRNA, and nonnatural RNA containing the consensus recognition sequence that we tested. Our findings suggest that Pus7 is a promiscuous enzyme and lead us to propose that factors beyond inherent enzyme properties (e.g., enzyme localization, RNA structure, and competition with other RNA-binding proteins) largely dictate Pus7 substrate selection.

Structural architecture of TolQ-TolR inner membrane protein complex from opportunistic pathogen Acinetobacter baumannii

Gram-negative bacteria harness the proton motive force (PMF) within their inner membrane (IM) to uphold cell envelope integrity, an indispensable aspect for both division and survival. The IM TolQ-TolR complex is the essential part of the Tol-Pal system, serving as a conduit for PMF energy transfer to the outer membrane. Here we present cryo–electron microscopy reconstructions ofAcinetobacter baumanniiTolQ in apo and TolR-bound forms at atomic resolution. The apo TolQ configuration manifests as a symmetric pentameric pore, featuring a transmembrane funnel leading toward a cytoplasmic chamber. In contrast, the TolQ-TolR complex assumes a proton nonpermeable stance, characterized by the TolQ pentamer’s flexure to accommodate the TolR dimer, where two protomers undergo a translation-based relationship. Our structure-guided analysis and simulations support the rotor-stator mechanism of action, wherein the rotation of the TolQ pentamer harmonizes with the TolR protomers’ interplay. These findings broaden our mechanistic comprehension of molecular stator units empowering critical functions within the Gram-negative bacterial cell envelope.

Multiple Hypothesis Tracking for Opportunistic Transmitter Identification

The exploitation of radio frequency (RF) signals from Low Earth Orbit (LEO) communication satellites for the purposes of navigation is an active field of research. In this alternative navigation system, navigation observables are passively extracted from existing RF signals. Because these signals are not designed for navigation purposes and often have proprietary signal structures that are unknown to the receiver, they lack much of the information required for navigation systems or such information is unavailable to the receiver.

Array-Pattern-Match Compiler for Opportunistic Data Analysis

A computer program has been written to facilitate real-time sifting of scientific data as they are acquired to find data patterns deemed to warrant further analysis. The patterns in question are of a type denoted array patterns, which are specified by nested parenthetical expressions. [One example of an array pattern is ((>3) 0 (not=1)): this pattern matches a vector of at least three elements, the first of which exceeds 3, the second of which is 0, and the third of which does not equal 1.] This program accepts a high-level description of a static array pattern and compiles a highly optimal and compact other program to determine whether any given instance of any data array matches that pattern. The compiler implemented by this program is independent of the target language, so that as new languages are used to write code that processes scientific data, they can easily be adapted to this compiler. This program runs on a variety of different computing platforms. It must be run in conjunction with any one of a number of Lisp compilers that are available commercially or as shareware.

Microbial Monitoring of Common Opportunistic Pathogens by Comparing Multiple Real-Time PCR Platforms for Potential Space Applications

Because the International Space Station is a closed environment with rotations of astronauts and equipment that each introduce their own microbial flora, it is necessary to monitor the air, surfaces, and water for microbial contamination. Current microbial monitoring includes labor- and time-intensive methods to enumerate total bacterial and fungal cells, with limited characterization, during in-flight testing. Although this culture-based method is sufficient for monitoring the International Space Station, on future long-duration missions more detailed characterization will need to be performed during flight, as sample return and ground characterization may not be available. At a workshop held in 2011 at NASA's Johnson Space Center to discuss alternative methodologies and technologies suitable for microbial monitoring for these long-term exploration missions, molecular-based methodologies such as polymerase chain reaction (PCR) were recommended. In response, a multi-center (Marshall Space Flight Center, Johnson Space Center, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and Kennedy Space Center) collaborative research effort was initiated to explore novel commercial-off-the-shelf hardware options for space flight environmental monitoring. The goal was to evaluate quantitative or semi-quantitative PCR approaches for low-cost in-flight rapid identification of microorganisms that could affect crew safety. The initial phase of this project identified commercially available platforms that could be minimally modified to perform nominally in microgravity. This phase was followed by proof-of-concept testing of the highest qualifying candidates with a universally available challenge organism, Salmonella enterica. The analysis identified two technologies that were able to perform sample-to-answer testing with initial cell sample concentrations between 50 and 400 cells. In addition, the commercial systems were evaluated for initial flight safety and readiness.
