Developing Source Term Database for Advanced Reactors

A source term database is crucial to informing nuclear emergency response measures, enabling emergency responders to assess the potential severity of nuclear and radiological consequences. In recent times, various advanced reactor designs have come into operation, are under construction, or are being designed and developed. This report documents an effort carried out to develop a source term database for advanced reactors. The report covers key design features of these reactors and discusses radioactivity buildup and source term inventories of dose-significant radionuclides in the reactor core. For neutronic and depletion analyses, we used the SCALE code system, a computational suite for reactor physics, depletion, criticality, and sensitivity/uncertainty quantification. We used SCALE/TRITON to perform depletion calculations to predict cycle length and discharge burnup and to generate the ORIGEN reactor library. Subsequently, we used SCALE/ORIGAMI to calculate radioactivity buildup and, thereby, the source term inventories at the targeted discharge burnup, using the ENDF/B-VII.1 nuclear data library. This report covers several advanced reactors, including the KLT-40S, RITM-200N, VOYGR, and eVinci. However, other reactors, such as the RITM-200S and ARC-100, have yet to be investigated and will be explored in future efforts.

Resolving the Discontinuity Between Thermal Scattering Data and Fast Data

The task of resolving discontinuities between thermal cross sections and fast cross sections in AMPX processing is part of a broader project to provide guidance on the potential effect of unknown thermal neutron scattering law (TNSL) data, primarily from the standpoint of criticality safety. The primary goal of this work is to deliver code fixes in AMPX that increase confidence that SCALE libraries provide physically correct cross sections across the full range of neutron energies encountered in transport applications. This report discusses the resolution of two sources of discontinuity. The first issue occurs when the Bragg edges in an evaluated nuclear data file do not extend to 5 eV. The second issue concerns parameters chosen during the processing of the nuclear data library—specifically, the parameter that defines the energy at which the thermal data ends and the fast nuclide data begins. This report also discusses a third issue, which is related to the calculation of probability distributions from a densely gridded double-differential cross section.

Application of SAMMY for Non-Destructive Characterization of Irradiated Samples Using Neutron Transmission Measurements at VENUS

This report presents the application of SAMMY (Larson 2008), an R-matrix Bayesian fitting system, for analyzing neutron transmission data to enable non-destructive isotopic identification. Transmission measurements were conducted at the VENUS (Bilheux et al. 2023) beamline of the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) using samples with unknown or partially characterized compositions. Through the application of SAMMY’s R-matrix Bayesian fitting capabilities to the measured transmission spectra and comparison against evaluated nuclear data libraries, isotopic constituents can be quantitatively determined based on their characteristic neutron resonance signatures. This methodology demonstrates significant potential for applications in nuclear safeguards, forensics, and post-irradiation examination.

Impact of Higher Fidelity Design Iterations on Critical System Criteria

Nuclear criticality experiments are effective at informing the performance of nuclear data libraries across many applications. This work explores the implications of refining critical experiment MCNP models from their low fidelity optimization phase to penultimate neutronic models. Specifically, this work is focused on two series of plutonium fueled experiments funded through internal programs at Los Alamos National Laboratory building off previous efforts under the EUCLID (Experiments Underpinned by Computational Learning for Improvements in Nuclear Data) collaboration. Thales, the first of the two collaborations, is a fast spectrum Ta-reflected plutonium experiment to support operations at PF-4. The second experiment are twin configurations designed to target the intermediate energy cross sections in 239 Pu. Motivation for this experiment stems from the PARallel Approach of Differential and InteGral Measurements (PARADIGM) collaboration which hopes to achieve a significant reduction in 239 Pu cross section uncertainties in the intermediate region.

Development of a Representative Molten Chloride Fast Reactor Model to Assess the Impact of Nuclear Data

The SCALE code system was employed to conduct a preliminary investigation of nuclear data impacts for a fast spectrum molten chloride salt reactor. A computationally effective depletion model that is representative of the reactor system was successfully developed and used to conduct fuel depletion simulations. Development of this model draws from the SLICE method that was developed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory to enable generation of fuel compositions for an advanced reactor core at equilibrium operation. Eigenvalue uncertainty calculations using the ENDF/B-VII.1 nuclear data library were performed for the reactor in the fresh fuel state and an irradiated fuel state. It was determined that the primary driver of eigenvalue uncertainty was the uncertainty in the 235U (n, 𝛾) cross section. Uncertainty calculation results from this study were compared to results available for a different fast system, a sodium-cooled fast reactor, to confirm similarities and identify differences with respect to nuclear data impacts between the two fast advanced reactor systems.

R -matrix analysis of n + nat Cl reactions up to 1.2 MeV

The R -matrix analysis of neutron-induced reactions for two stable chlorine isotopes ( 35 Cl and 37 Cl) was performed in the energy range of thermal up to 1.2 MeV. Starting from the repository of the ENDF/B-VIII.0 library and following recent measurement series, this work represents a significant improvement, particularly in the evaluation of the ( n , p ) reaction channel. The evaluation methodology used the R -matrix code SAMMY to generate a set of Reich–Moore resonance parameters for both stable chlorine isotopes. Consistent with recently measured 35 Cl( n , p ) data, the presented evaluation features a dramatic increase in the magnitude of the ( n , p ) reaction channel over the ENDF/B-VIII.1 nuclear data library and previous ENDF/B libraries.
