Low-energy physics of isotropic spin-1 chains in the critical and Haldane phases

Using a matrix product state algorithm with infinite boundary conditions, we compute high-resolution dynamic spin and quadrupolar structure factors in the thermodynamic limit to explore the low-energy excitations of isotropic bilinear-biquadratic spin-1 chains. Haldane mapped the spin-1 Heisenberg antiferromagnet to a continuum field theory, the nonlinear sigma model (NLσM). In this work, we find that the NLσM fails to capture the influence of the biquadratic term and provides only an unsatisfactory description of the Haldane phase physics. But several features in the Haldane phase can be explained by noninteracting multimagnon states. The physics at the Uimin-Lai-Sutherland point is characterized by multisoliton continua. Moving into the extended critical phase, we find that these excitation continua contract, which we explain using a field-theoretic description. New excitations emerge at higher energies and, in the vicinity of the purely biquadratic point, they show simple cosine dispersions. Using block fidelities, we identify them as elementary one-particle excitations and relate them to the integrable Temperley-Lieb chain.

All-loop soft theorem for pions

In this paper we discuss a generalization of the Adler zero to loop integrands in the planar limit of the S U ( N ) nonlinear sigma model (NLSM). The Adler zero for integrands is violated starting at the two-loop order and is only recovered after integration. Here we propose a soft theorem satisfied by loop integrands with any number of loops and legs. This requires a generalization of NLSM integrands to an off shell framework with certain deformed kinematics. Defining an , we identify a simple nonvanishing soft behavior of integrands, which we call the . We find that the proposed soft theorem is satisfied by the “surface” integrand of Arkani-Hamed and Figueiredo [], which is obtained from the shifted Tr φ 3 surfacehedron integrand. Finally, we derive an on shell version of the algebraic soft theorem that takes an interesting form in terms of self-energy factors and lower-loop integrands in a mixed theory of pions and scalars. Hidden amplitude zeros from the double-copy map

Recently, Arkani-Hamed proposed the existence of zeros in scattering amplitudes in certain quantum field theories including the cubic adjoint scalar theory Tr ( ϕ 3 ) , the S U ( N ) nonlinear sigma model and Yang-Mills theory. These hidden zeros are special kinematic points where the amplitude vanishes and factorizes into a product of lower-point amplitudes, similar to factorization near poles. In this paper, we show a close connection between the existence of such zeros and the double-copy map. In fact, compatibility with the Bern-Carrasco-Johansson relations requires the presence of these zeros. We also show that these zeros extend via the Kawai-Lewellen-Tye relations to special Galileon amplitudes and their corrections, evincing that these hidden zeros are also present in permutation-invariant amplitudes. Volume-preserving diffeomorphism as nonabelian higher-rank gauge symmetry

We propose nonabelian higher-rank gauge theories in 2+1D and 3+1D. The gauge group is constructed from the volume-preserving diffeomorphisms of space. We show that the intriguing physics of the lowest Landau level (LLL) limit can be interpreted as the consequences of the symmetry. We derive the renowned Girvin-MacDonald-Platzman (GMP) algebra as well as the topological Wen-Zee term within our formalism. Using the gauge symmetry in 2+1D, we derive the LLL effective action of vortex crystal in rotating Bose gas as well as Wigner crystal of electron in an applied magnetic field. We show that the nonlinear sigma models of ferromagnets in 2+1D and 3+1D exhibit the higher-rank gauge symmetries that we introduce in this paper. We interpret the fractonic behavior of the excitations on the lowest Landau level and of skyrmions in ferromagnets as the consequence of the higher-rank gauge symmetry.

State preparation and measurement in a quantum simulation of the $O(\mathrm{3})$ sigma model

Recently, Singh and Chandrasekharan [Phys. Rev. D 100, 054505 (2019)] showed that fixed points of the nonlinear O ( 3 ) sigma model can be reproduced near a quantum phase transition of a spin model with just two qubits per lattice site. In a paper by the NuQS Collaboration [Phys. Rev. Lett. 123, 090501 (2019)], the proposal is made to simulate such field theories on a quantum computer using the universal properties of a similar model. In this paper, following that direction, we demonstrate how to prepare the ground state of the model from Singh and Chandrasekharan and measure a dynamical quantity of interest, the O ( 3 ) Noether charge, on a quantum computer. In particular, we apply Trotter methods to obtain results for the complexity of adiabatic ground state preparation in both the weak-coupling and quantum-critical regimes and use shadow tomography to measure the dynamics of local observables. Finally, we then present and analyze a quantum algorithm based on nonunitary randomized simulation methods that may yield an approach suitable for intermediate-term noisy quantum devices.

Skyrmion superconductivity: DMRG evidence for a topological route to superconductivity

It was recently suggested that the topology of magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene's (MATBG) flat bands could provide a novel mechanism for superconductivity distinct from both weakly coupled BCS theory and the d-wave phenomenology of the high-T c cuprates. In this work, we examine this possibility using a density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) study of a model which captures the essential features of MATBG's symmetry and topology. Here, using large-scale cylinder-DMRG calculations to obtain the ground state and its excitations as a function of the electron doping, we find clear evidence for superconductivity driven by the binding of electrons into charge-2e skyrmions. Remarkably, this binding is observed even in the regime where the unscreened Coulomb repulsion is by far the largest energy scale, demonstrating the robustness of this topological, all-electronic pairing mechanism.

Heterobilayer moiré magnets: Moiré skyrmions and commensurate-incommensurate transitions

In this work, we study untwisted heterobilayers of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic van der Waals materials, with in particular a Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in the ferromagnetic layer. A continuum low-energy field theory is utilized to study such systems. We develop a phase diagram as a function of the strength of interlayer exchange and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, combining perturbative and strong coupling analyses with numerical simulations using Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equations. Various moiré-periodic commensurate phases are found, and the commensurate-incommensurate transition is discussed. Among the commensurate phases, we observe an interesting skyrmion lattice phase wherein each moiré unit-cell hosts one skyrmion.

Emergence of many-body quantum chaos via spontaneous breaking of unitarity

It is suggested that many-body quantum chaos appears as the spontaneous symmetry breaking of unitarity in interacting quantum many-body systems. It has been shown that many-body level statistics, probed by the spectral form factor (SFF) defined as K(η,t)=$\langle$|Tr exp(-ηH+itH)| 2 $\rangle$, is dominated by a diffuson-type mode in a field theory analysis. The key finding of this Letter is that the “unitary” η = 0 case is different from the η → 0 ± limit, with the latter leading to a finite mass of these modes due to interactions. This mass suppresses a rapid exponential ramp in the SFF, which is responsible for the fast emergence of Poisson statistics in the noninteracting case, and gives rise to a nontrivial random matrix structure of many-body levels. The interaction-induced mass in the SFF shares similarities with the dephasing rate in the theory of weak localization and the Lyapunov exponent of the out-of-time-ordered correlators.

The Aemulus Project. V. Cosmological Constraint from Small-scale Clustering of BOSS Galaxies

We analyze clustering measurements of BOSS galaxies using a simulation-based emulator of two-point statistics. We focus on the monopole and quadrupole of the redshift-space correlation function, and the projected correlation function, at scales of 0.1 ~ 60 h -1 Mpc. Although our simulations are based on wCDM with general relativity (GR), we include a scaling parameter of the halo velocity field, γ f , defined as the amplitude of the halo velocity field relative to the GR prediction. We divide the BOSS data into three redshift bins. After marginalizing over other cosmological parameters, galaxy bias parameters, and the velocity scaling parameter, we find fσ 8 (z = 0.25) = 0.413 ± 0.031, fσ 8 (z = 0.4) = 0.470 ± 0.026, and fσ 8 (z = 0.55) = 0.396 ± 0.022. Compared with Planck observations using a flat Lambda cold dark matter model, our results are lower by 1.9σ, 0.3σ, and 3.4σ, respectively. These results are consistent with other recent simulation-based results at nonlinear scales, including weak lensing measurements of BOSS LOWZ galaxies, two-point clustering of eBOSS LRGs, and an independent clustering analysis of BOSS LOWZ. All these results are generally consistent with a combination of ${\gamma }_{f}^{1/2}{\sigma }_{8}\approx 0.75$. We note, however, that the BOSS data is well fit assuming GR, i.e., γf = 1. We cannot rule out an unknown systematic error in the galaxy bias model at nonlinear scales, but near-future data and modeling will enhance our understanding of the galaxy–halo connection, and provide a strong test of new physics beyond the standard model.

Universality of a truncated sigma-model

Bosonic quantum field theories, even when regularized using a finite lattice, possess an infinite dimensional Hilbert space and, therefore, cannot be simulated in quantum computers with a finite number of qubits. A truncation of the Hilbert space is then needed and the physical results are obtained after a double limit: one to remove the truncation and another to remove the regulator (the continuum limit). A simpler alternative is to find a model with a finite dimensional Hilbert space belonging to the same universality class as the continuum model (a “qubitization”), so only the space continuum limit is required. A qubitization of the 1 + 1 dimensional asymptotically free O(3) nonlinear σ-model based on ideas of non-commutative geometry was previously proposed [1] and, in this paper, we provide evidence that it reproduces the physics of the σ-model both in the infrared and the ultraviolet regimes.

Relativistic non-thermal particle acceleration in two-dimensional collisionless magnetic reconnection

Magnetic reconnection, especially in the relativistic regime, provides an efficient mechanism for accelerating relativistic particles and thus offers an attractive physical explanation for non-thermal high-energy emission from various astrophysical sources. I present a simple analytical model that elucidates key physical processes responsible for reconnection-driven relativistic non-thermal particle acceleration in the large-system, plasmoid-dominated regime in two dimensions. The model aims to explain the numerically observed dependencies of the power-law index $p$ and high-energy cutoff $\gamma _c$ of the resulting non-thermal particle energy spectrum $f(\gamma )$ on the ambient plasma magnetization $\sigma$ , and (for $\gamma _c$ ) on the system size $L$ . In this self-similar model, energetic particles are continuously accelerated by the out-of-plane reconnection electric field $E_{\rm rec}$ until they become magnetized by the reconnected magnetic field and eventually trapped in plasmoids large enough to confine them. The model also includes diffusive Fermi acceleration by particle bouncing off rapidly moving plasmoids. I argue that the balance between electric acceleration and magnetization controls the power-law index, while trapping in plasmoids governs the cutoff, thus tying the particle energy spectrum to the plasmoid distribution.
