Study of Near-Threshold Fatigue Crack Propagation in Pipeline Steels in High Pressure Environments

Near threshold fatigue crack propagation in pipeline steels in high pressure environments was studied. The objective was to determine the level of threshold stress intensity for fatigue crack growth rate behavior in a high strength low alloy X60 pipeline-type steel. Complete results have been generated for gaseous hydrogen at ambient pressure, laboratory air at ambient pressure and approximately 60% relative humidity as well as vacuum of 0.000067 Pa ( 0.0000005 torr) at R-ratios = K(min)/K(max) of 0.1, 0.5, and 0.8. Fatigue crack growth rate behavior in gaseous hydrogen, methane, and methane plus 10 percent hydrogen at 6.89 MPa (100 psi) was determined.

Morphological study of near threshold fatigue crack growth in a coarse grain aluminum alloy

Fatigue crack propagation in the near-threshold region has been studied in coarse grain Al 7029 alloy. Over eighty percent of the crack surfaces are planar areas parallel to either 100-oriented or 111-oriented planes. The 100-plane crack surfaces show 'pine tree' morphological features formed by slip on two sets of intersecting planes. The 111-plane crack surfaces were planar and shiny. They were formed primarily by slip on a single dominant 111-oriented slip plane with sparse and very light secondary slip markings. Crack growth rates were measured and correlated with Delta-K.

Anomalous ellipticity dependence of the generation of near-threshold harmonics in noble gases

We measured the ellipticity dependence of the harmonic yield of He, Ne, Ar, Kr, and Xe. It is found that the harmonic yield in general decreases monotonically with increasing laser ellipticity but anomalous dependence does occur for each atom for some harmonic orders. Additionally, we found that the degree of anomaly is weakest in helium but is stronger for the heavier atoms. The anomaly also depends on laser intensity. To explain these features, we developed a quantum trajectory Monte Carlo (QTMC) model based on the quantum path integral theory to study high-order harmonic generation (HHG). The model includes the effect of Coulomb potential from the target ion, thus it is capable of calculating near-threshold harmonics quantitatively. This model reveals that the presence of Coulomb potential would generate orbiting trajectories which are responsible for the anomalous ellipticity dependence near the threshold.

Rosenbluth-like separation of the $J/ψ$ near-threshold photoproduction: An access to the gluon gravitational form factors at high t

Here, we perform analysis of the near-threshold $J/\psi $ photoproduction data off the proton based on two theoretical approaches, GPD \cite{Guo3} and holographic \cite{Zahed2}, that represent the differential cross sections as powers of the skewness parameter with coefficients that depend only on the momentum transfer $t$. This allows to separate kinematically the corresponding coefficient functions, in much the same way as this is done for the electric and magnetic form factors using the Rosenbluth separation. We examine the independence of the extracted functions with the photon beam energy. These functions, under additional assumptions, are related to the proton's gluon Gravitational Form Factors (gGFFs). We compare the extracted functions with lattice calculations of the gGFFs in the region of $0.5<|t|<2$~GeV$^{2}$, where they overlap. Such analysis demonstrates the possibility of extracting some combinations of the gGFFs from the data at high $t$, complementary to the lattice calculations available in the low $t$ region. However, higher statistics are needed to more accurately check the predicted scaling behavior of the data and compare with the lattice results, thus testing and comparing the theoretical assumptions used in the GPD and holographic models.

Photoproduction of η c , b near threshold

We analyze the photoproduction of η c , b off a proton in the threshold region, in terms of C-odd gluonic correlations in the off-forward proton matrix element. Near threshold, the skewness is large, leading to a production amplitude that is dominated by four C-odd twist-3 gluon GPDs. We use the QCD instanton vacuum to estimate these C-odd contributions in the proton. The results are used to estimate the differential cross sections for coherent photoproduction of η c , b in the threshold region, at current electron facilities. Polarization of Lyman-Alpha Radiation from Atomic Hydrogen Excited by Electron Impact form Near Threshold to 1800 eV

The polarization of Lyman-a radiation, produced by electron-impact excitation of atomic hydrogen, has been measured over the extended energy range from near threshold to 1800 eV. Measurements were obtained in a crossed-beam experiment using a silica-reflection linear polarization analyzer in tandem with a vacuum-ultraviolet monochromator to isolate the emitted line radiation. Comparison with various theoretical calculations shows that the present experimental results are in good agreement with theory over the entire range of electron-impact energies and, in particular, are in excellent agreement with theoretical convergent-close-coupling (CCC) calculations performed in the present work. Our polarization data are significantly different from the previous experimental measurements of Ott, Kauppila, and Fite.

Double Photoionization Near Threshold

The threshold region of the double-photoionization cross section is of particular interest because both ejected electrons move slowly in the Coulomb field of the residual ion. Near threshold both electrons have time to interact with each other and with the residual ion. Also, different theoretical models compete to describe the double-photoionization cross section in the threshold region. We have investigated that cross section for lithium and beryllium and have analyzed our data with respect to the latest results in the Coulomb-dipole theory. We find that our data support the idea of a Coulomb-dipole interaction.

Near-Threshold Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of Fine-Grain Nickel-Based Alloys

Constant-Kmax fatigue crack growth tests were performed on two finegrain nickel-base alloys Inconel 718 (DA) and Ren 95 to determine if these alloys exhibit near-threshold time-dependent crack growth behavior observed for fine-grain aluminum alloys in room-temperature laboratory air. Test results showed that increases in K(sub max) values resulted in increased crack growth rates, but no evidence of time-dependent crack growth was observed for either nickel-base alloy at room temperature.

Analyses of Fatigue Crack Growth and Closure Near Threshold Conditions for Large-Crack Behavior

A plasticity-induced crack-closure model was used to study fatigue crack growth and closure in thin 2024-T3 aluminum alloy under constant-R and constant-K(sub max) threshold testing procedures. Two methods of calculating crack-opening stresses were compared. One method was based on a contact-K analyses and the other on crack-opening-displacement (COD) analyses. These methods gave nearly identical results under constant-amplitude loading, but under threshold simulations the contact-K analyses gave lower opening stresses than the contact COD method. Crack-growth predictions tend to support the use of contact-K analyses. Crack-growth simulations showed that remote closure can cause a rapid rise in opening stresses in the near threshold regime for low-constraint and high applied stress levels. Under low applied stress levels and high constraint, a rise in opening stresses was not observed near threshold conditions. But crack-tip-opening displacement (CTOD) were of the order of measured oxide thicknesses in the 2024 alloy under constant-R simulations. In contrast, under constant-K(sub max) testing the CTOD near threshold conditions were an order-of-magnitude larger than measured oxide thicknesses. Residual-plastic deformations under both constant-R and constant-K(sub max) threshold simulations were several times larger than the expected oxide thicknesses. Thus, residual-plastic deformations, in addition to oxide and roughness, play an integral part in threshold development.

Near-threshold photoproduction of J/ of a proton with the CLAS12 experiment

The photo-production of vector mesons off the proton has long been established as an important tool to access the gluon content of the nucleon. In particular, the photo-production of J/Psi near the threshold energy has been related to the Gravitational Form Factors of the gluons which provide information about the mass and the force distributions in the nucleon. In this talk, I will present results on the near-threshold photoproduction of J/Psi using data taken in 2018 and 2019 by the CLAS12 detector at Jefferson Lab, with an electron beam impinging on a liquid-hydrogen target. This measurement is expected to provide direct insight on the gluons distribution inside the proton.

Analytical and Experimental Study of Near-Threshold Interactions Between Crack Closure Mechanisms

The results of an analytical closure model that considers contributions and interactions between plasticity-, roughness-, and oxide-induced crack closure mechanisms are presented and compared with experimental data. The analytical model is shown to provide a good description of the combined influences of crack roughness, oxide debris, and plasticity in the near-threshold regime. Furthermore, analytical results indicate that closure mechanisms interact in a non-linear manner such that the total amount of closure is not the sum of closure contributions for each mechanism.

Photonuclear cross sections for the 197 Au ⁢(𝛾, 𝑝⁢𝑛)⁢ 195⁢𝑚 Pt reaction near threshold

Platinum radioisotopes are of growing interest for targeted cancer therapy and diagnostic imaging because their decay delivers highly localized radiation doses in tissue, herewith enabling precise DNA damage through Auger-electron emission. Developing production technologies that provide platinum isotopes with high specific activity is essential in radioisotope therapy. Photonuclear reactions on stable nuclei offer a viable accelerator-based route for isotope production when supported by reliable cross-section data. We report photonuclear cross-section measurements for the 197 Au(γ, pn) 195m Pt reaction at incident γ-ray energies of 27, 29, and 31 MeV using the activation method. The measurements were performed by irradiating a stack of concentric-ring gold targets with a quasi-monoenergetic γ-ray beam provided by the High Intensity Gamma-ray Source (HI γS). The induced 195m Pt activity was quantified using off-line γ-ray spectroscopy. These data provide the first experimental constraints on the 197 Au(γ, pn) 195m Pt cross section in the near-threshold region. Furthermore, the comparison of the measured excitation function to PHITS and TALYS calculations indicates that the reaction becomes measurable only near 30 MeV and that substantially higher bremsstrahlung end-point energies are required for practically meaningful production.

Near-threshold resonances in C 11 and the B 10 ( p , α ) Be 7 aneutronic reaction

The nucleus 11 C plays an important role in the boron-proton fusion reactor environment as a catalyzer of the 10 B(p,α) 7 Be reaction which, by producing a long-lived isotope of 7 Be, poisons the aneutronic fusion process 11 B(p,2α) 4 He. The low-energy cross section of 10 B(p,α) 7 Be depends on the near-threshold states 7/2$^{+}_{1}$, 5/2$^{+}_{2}$, 5/2$^{+}_{3}$ in 11 C whose properties are primarily known from the indirect measurements. Here we investigate the continuum-coupling induced collectivization of these resonances in the shell model embedded in the continuum. We predict a significant enhancement of the 10 B(p,α) 7 Be cross section at energies accessible to the laser-driven hot plasma facilities.

Measurement of the J/ψ photoproduction cross section over the full near-threshold kinematic region

Here, we report the total and differential cross sections for $J/\psi$ photoproduction with the large acceptance GlueX spectrometer for photon beam energies from the threshold at 8.2 GeV up to 11.44 GeV and over the full kinematic range of momentum transfer squared, $t$. Such coverage facilitates the extrapolation of the differential cross sections to the forward ($t = 0$) point beyond the physical region. The forward cross section is used by many theoretical models and plays an important role in understanding $J/\psi$ photoproduction and its relation to the $J/\psi$-proton interaction. These measurements of $J/\psi$ photoproduction near threshold are also crucial inputs to theoretical models that are used to study important aspects of the gluon structure of the proton, such as the gluon Generalized Parton Distribution (GPD) of the proton, the mass radius of the proton, and the trace anomaly contribution to the proton mass. We observe possible structures in the total cross section energy dependence and find evidence for contributions beyond gluon exchange in the differential cross section close to threshold, both of which are consistent with contributions from open-charm intermediate states.

Bendability parameter for twisted ribbons to describe longitudinal wrinkling and delineate the near-threshold regime

We propose a dimensionless bendability parameter, ε -1 =[(h/W) 2 ⁢T -1 ] -1 , for wrinkling of thin, twisted ribbons with thickness h, width W, and tensional strain T. Bendability permits efficient collapse of data for wrinkle onset, wavelength, critical stress, and residual stress, demonstrating longitudinal wrinkling's primary dependence on this parameter. This parameter also allows us to distinguish the highly bendable range (ε -1 >20) from moderately bendable samples (ε -1 ϵ(0,20]). We identify scaling relations to describe longitudinal wrinkles that are valid across our entire set of simulated ribbons. When restricted to the highly bendable regime, simulations confirm theoretical near-threshold (NT) predictions for wrinkle onset and wavelength.

Near-Threshold Dipole Strength in 10 Be with Isoscalar Character

Isoscalar dipole transitions are a distinctive fingerprint of cluster structures. A 1 − resonance at 7.27(10) MeV, located just below the 𝛼-emission threshold, has been observed in the deuteron inelastic scattering reactions off 10 Be. The deformation lengths of the excited states in 10 Be below 9 MeV have been inferred from the differential cross sections using coupled channel calculations. This observed 1 − resonance has isoscalar characteristics and exhausts approximately 5%–15% of the isoscalar dipole energy-weighted sum rule, providing evidence for pronounced 𝛼 cluster structure in 10 Be. The Gamow coupled channel approach supports this interpretation and suggests the near-threshold effect might be playing an important role in this excitation energy domain. Here, the 𝛼 +𝛼 +𝑛 +𝑛 four-body calculation reproduces the observed enhanced dipole strength, implying that the four-body cluster structure is essential to describe the 1 − states in 10 Be.

Anisotropy Measurements from the Near-Threshold Photodissociation of the N2−NO Complex

We have used velocity map ion imaging to measure the angular anisotropy of the NO (A) products from the photodissociation of the N 2 −NO complex. Our experiment ranged from 108 to 758 cm −1 above the threshold energy to form NO (A)+N 2 (X) products, and these measurements reveal, for the first time, a strong angular anisotropy from photodissociation. At 108 cm −1 above the photodissociation threshold, we observed NO (A) photoproducts recoil preferentially perpendicular to the laser polarization axis with an average anisotropy parameter, β = −0.25; however, as the available energy was increased, the anisotropy increased, and at 758 cm −1 above the threshold energy, we found an average β = +0.28. The observed changes in the angular anisotropy of the NO (A) photoproduct are qualitatively similar to those observed for the photodissociation of the Ar−NO complex and likely result from changes in the region of the excited state potential energy surface accessed during the electronic excitation. At the lowest available energy, we also noted a large contribution from hot band excitation; however, this contribution decreased as the available energy increased. The outsized contribution at the lowest available energy may result from hot bands having better Franck−Condon overlap with the excited electronic state near threshold. Finally, we contrast the experimental center of mass translational energy distribution with a statistical energy distribution determined from phase space theory. The experimental and statistical distributions show pronounced disagreement, particularly at low kinetic energies, with the experimental one showing less dissociation resulting in high rotational levels of the fragments.
