Hierarchical Hybrid Multifunctional Materials through Interface Engineering

This project focuses on the development of stimuli-responsive hybrid multifunctional materials. We place emphasis on the design, synthesis, structural characterization, evaluation of functional properties (electronic, thermal and optical) of several (1-x)Cu 2 Se/(x)WBGS hierarchical bulk composites between Cu 2 Se, a narrow band gap semiconductor (NBGS), with a range of wider band gap semiconductors (WBGS) such as CuMSe 2 (M = Al, Ga, In, Fe, Cr) and Cu 4 TiSe 4 . Cu2Se is a well-studied NBGS with excellent thermoelectric properties (high electrical conductivity, large thermopower, etc.) while CuMSe 2 and Cu 4 TiSe 4 are high performance solar absorber materials (large band gap, large absorption coefficient, etc.). Our primary objectives are (i) to demonstrate the ability to integrate dissimilar functional properties such as large optical absorption coefficient and high electronic conductivity, within (1-x)Cu 2 Se/(x)WBGS composite; and (ii) to establish the correlation between the hierarchical structural entanglement of Cu 2 Se with WBGS (CuMSe 2 or Cu 4 TiSe 4 ) phase, the interactions between native electronic defects within the coexisting phases in the resulting (1-x)Cu 2 Se/(x)WBGS bulk composites , and the impacts on their electronic conductivity, thermal transport and optical properties.

Study of repeater technology for advanced multifunctional communications satellites

Investigations are presented concerning design concepts and implementation approaches for the satellite communication repeater subsystems of advanced multifunctional satellites. In such systems the important concepts are the use of multiple antenna beams, repeater switching (routing), and efficient spectrum utilization through frequency reuse. An information base on these techniques was developed and tradeoff analyses were made of repeater design concepts, with the work design taken in a broad sense to include modulation beam coverage patterns. There were five major areas of study: requirements analysis and processing; study of interbeam interference in multibeam systems; characterization of multiple-beam switching repeaters; estimation of repeater weight and power for a number of alternatives; and tradeoff analyses based on these weight and power data.

Multifunction display system, volume 1

The design and construction of a multifunction display man/machine interface for use with a 4 pi IBM-360 System are described. The system is capable of displaying superimposed volatile alphanumeric and graphical data on a 512 x 512 element plasma panel, and holographically stored multicolor archival information. The volatile data may be entered from a keyboard or by means of an I/O interface to the 360 system. A 2-page memory local to the display is provided for storing the entered data. The archival data is stored as a phase hologram on a vinyl tape strip. This data is accessible by means of a rapid transport system which responds to inputs provided by the I/O channel on the keyboard. As many as 500 frames may be stored on a tape strip for access in under 6 seconds.

Investigation of the use of an electronic multifunction display and an electromechanical horizontal situation indicator for guidance and control of powered-lift short-haul aircraft

The use which pilots make of a moving map display from en route through the terminal area and including the approach and go-around flight phases was investigated. The content and function of each of three primary STOLAND displays are reviewed from an operational point of view. The primary displays are the electronic attitude director indicator (EADI), the horizontal situation indicator (HSI), and the multifunction display (MFD). Manually controlled flight with both flight director guidance and raw situation data is examined in detail in a simulated flight experiment with emphasis on tracking reference flight plans and maintaining geographic orientation after missed approaches. Eye-point-of-regard and workload measurements, coupled with task performance measurements, pilot opinion ratings, and pilot comments are presented. The experimental program was designed to offer a systematic objective and subjective comparison of pilots' use of the moving map MFD in conjunction with the other displays.

Geostationary operational environmental satellite /GOES/ - A multifunctional satellite

The GOES satellites are multifunctional satellites whose primary function is to provide continuous measurements of the earth's surface and atmosphere from two geostationary orbit locations: 75 deg W and 135 deg W. This objective is accomplished with the visible infrared spin scan radiometer Atmospheric Sounder (VAS), and the Space Environment Monitor (SEM), which includes three instruments: a magnetometer, solar X-ray sensor, and an energetic particle sensor, which monitor the near earth space environment. The satellite's communication system provides several user oriented functions, including: (1) Transmission of VAS data; (2) Transmission of SEM data; (3) Transponder capabilities for stretched VAS (SVAS) data, weather facsimile (WEFAX) data, and trilateration signals; (4) transponder capabilities for data collection platform interrogation and data collection platform reply.

Test and evaluation of a multifunction keyboard and a dedicated keyboard for control of a flight management computer

A flight management computer (FMC) control display unit (CDU) test was conducted to compare two types of input devices: a fixed legend (dedicated) keyboard and a programmable legend (multifunction) keyboard. The task used for comparison was operation of the flight management computer for the Boeing 737-300. The same tasks were performed by twelve pilots on the FMC control display unit configured with a programmable legend keyboard and with the currently used B737-300 dedicated keyboard. Flight simulator work activity levels and input task complexity were varied during each pilot session. Half of the points tested were previously familiar with the B737-300 dedicated keyboard CDU and half had no prior experience with it. The data collected included simulator flight parameters, keystroke time and sequences, and pilot questionnaire responses. A timeline analysis was also used for evaluation of the two keyboard concepts.

An Ultra-long Life, High-performance, Flexible Li-CO2Battery Based on Multifunctional Carbon Electrocatalysts

Integrating CO2 utilization and renewable energy delivery/storage, the rechargeable Li–CO2 battery has been considered as a promising candidate for next-generation secondary batteries. However, high-performance catalyst(s) for efficient formation and decomposition of the discharge product, Li2CO3, are an imperative part of a Li–CO2 battery. The development of flexible Li–CO2 batteries extends their applications into compliant and wearable devices/systems, but at the same time imposes a big challenge for battery fabrication and lifetime enhancement. In this study, a rechargeable quasi-solidus flexible Li–CO2 battery was designed and fabricated using highly active N,S-doped carbon nanotubes (N,S-doped CNTs) as the cathode catalyst, and a smart polymer gel as the flexible electrolyte. This newly-developed flexible Li–CO2 battery exhibited a capacity as high as 23560 mAh g−1 based on the catalyst mass and an ultra-long lifetime of up to 538 cycles with excellent mechanical flexibility. This work provides a platform for the design and development of high-performance flexible Li–CO2 batteries from low-cost, earth-abundant, carbon-based multifunctional cathode catalysts.

Investigation of a thermocapacitive cycle by aqueous supercapacitors for multifunctional heat pump and energy storage

Thermocapacitive cycles are promising thermal and energy storage cycles using supercapacitors, which can achieve thermal efficiencies over 50% of the Carnot limit. There is a lack of work investigating the use of thermocapacitive effects in practical heat pumps. Here, this paper explores the design of thermocapacitive cells with higher temperature changes to be better suited for heat pumping applications. To evaluate the cell designs on temperature changes, pouch type cells are prototyped and modeled, and tested using a micro-calorimeter. A peak adiabatic temperature span of a LiCl aqueous cell is 2.7 °C. By arranging the cells in a cascade manner, the projected adiabatic temperature span can reach up to 12 °C with a heating density of 15 kW m −3 and an energy storage density of 0.83 kWh m −3 . Models predict that this could be increased to 30 °C and 1.65 kWh m −3 through improvements to cell capacitance and thermopower. Incorporating the energy storage capabilities into heating and cooling devices can be beneficial to building thermal management as energy storage becomes increasingly important for energy system integration.

Green Electrode Processing Enabled by Fluoro-Free Multifunctional Binders for Lithium-Ion Batteries

The eco-friendly processing of conjugated polymer binder for lithium-ion batteries demands improved polymer solubility by introducing functional moieties, while this strategy will concurrently sacrifice polymer conductivity. Employing the polyfluorene-based binder poly(2,7-9,9 (di(oxy-2,5,8-trioxadecane))fluorene) (PFO), soluble in water-ethanol mixtures, a novel approach is presented to solve this trade-off, which features integration of aqueous solution processing with subsequent controlled thermal-induced cleavage of solubilizing side chains, to produce hierarchically ordered structures (HOS). The thermal processing can enhance the intermolecular π–π stacking of polyfluorene backbone for better electrochemical performance. Notably, HOS-PFO demonstrated a substantial 6–7 orders of magnitude enhancement in electronic conductivity, showcasing its potential as a functional binder for lithium-ion batteries. As an illustration, HOS-PFO protected SiOx anodes, utilizing in situ side chain decomposition of PFO surrounding SiOx particles after aqueous processing are fabricated. HOS-PFO contributed to the stable cycling and high-capacity retention of practical SiOx anodes (3.0 mAh cm -2 ), without the use of any conducting carbon additives or fluorinated electrolyte additives. It is proposed that this technique represents a universal approach for fabricating electrodes with conjugated polymer binders from aqueous solutions without compromising conductivity.
