Surrogate modeling of Monte Carlo radiation transport with convolutional neural networks for shielding optimization
Here, we present a machine learning (ML)-based surrogate model using convolutional neural networks (CNN) designed to emulate the attenuation of neutron fields as they pass through various shielding materials. This model can compute the outgoing neutron flux almost instantaneously and achieves reasonable accuracy compared to traditional Monte Carlo (MC)-based codes, which are computationally intensive. This emulator alleviates the complexity of neutron radiation transport through shielding materials by reducing the dimensionality and enables shielding optimization for a known radiation environment. This optimization process, which would have taken an unrealistic timeline due to several complex radiation transport simulations, can now be achieved in minutes, thus increasing computational capabilities in radiation shielding assessment. We demonstrate the applications of this emulator in computing effective dose rates and optimizing shielding solutions for a heavy-ion accelerator facility, such as the Facility for Rare Isotope Beams, where secondary neutrons produced via beam interactions dominate the radiation environment.

Turbojet Lift Engine Design for Vtol Transports
The pure hoverjet, utilizing separate turbojet engines for lift and cruise phases of flight, is an interesting high speed VTOL transport airplane configuration. The results of a brief analysis are presented with the intent to: (I) define the effects of some general powerplant installation and operating variables on VTOL transport performance; (2) indicate desirable turbojet lift engine design characteristics with respect to compressor pressure ratio, turbine inlet temperature, component efficiencies and thrust augmentation; and (3) examine the unique lift engine operating requirements for feasible ways of reducing engine specific weight. The figure of merit used to gauge airplane performance is airplane range.

Vapor Transport Crystal Growth of Mercury-Cadmium-Telluride in Microgravity
Two epitaxial growth experiments of Hg 1-x Cd x Te layers on (100) CdTe substrates in closed ampoules using HgI 2 as a transport agent have been performed during the USML-1 mission. The characterization results to date demonstrate a considerable improvement of the space-grown epitaxial layers relative to ground-control specimens in terms of morphology, compositional uniformity, and structural micro homogeneity. These results show the effects of microgravity and fluid dynamic disturbances on-ground on the deposition and growth processes. The continued analysis of this technologically important system is designed to further elucidate the observed crystallographic improvements and their relation to mass flow.
Operando neutron radiography validates a parameter-free transport–kinetics model for thick solid-state battery cathodes
Tortuosity-weighted interfacial flux for lithium (TWIF-Li) predicts through-thickness Li gradients in thick composite all-solid-state cathodes without fitted parameters. Image-derived microstructures, GITT-derived concentration-dependent solid diffusion, and tortuosity-weighted interfacial kinetics reproduce operando neutron radiography across practical rates, delivering transferable design rules to suppress transport-limited reaction fronts.
High-Throughput Uniformity and Defect Monitoring in Low-Temperature Electrolysis Porous Transport Layers Using X-Ray Radiography
Effective quality control (QC) for manufacturing proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEMWE) components is critical to enabling widespread adoption of the technology for hydrogen generation. This study investigates X-ray radiography as a novel, high-throughput, potentially in-line QC technique for detecting defects and assessing material property distributions in titanium-based porous transport layers (PTLs) which constitute a crucial component of low temperature PEMWE stacks. We obtain radiographs of a set of fifteen PTLs and model their absorbance of the broadband radiation as a second-order polynomial to account for the non-monoenergetic radiation source used in this study. The resulting model serves as a basis for predicting the areal density and porosity distributions of the PTLs. We find radiography successful in detecting multiple instances of defects, including holes/depressions, cracks, and excess material on the surface or in the pores of the material, demonstrating its potential as a robust in-line QC tool for PTL manufacturing.
