Phase II testing of Xenon International on Mount Schauinsland, Germany

Station RN33 on Mount Schauinsland near Freiburg, Germany, is part of the International Monitoring System monitoring radioxenon in air ( 131m Xe, 133 Xe, 133m Xe, and 135 Xe) for verification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. Here, we present data from phase II testing of a new system, Xenon International at RN33, July 14th, 2021 to Jan 22nd, 2022, together with SPALAX data from the same time period. Radioxenon could be detected in 473 of 719 samples, among them many multiple isotope detections. Activity concentrations of spiked and selected environmental samples were verified by laboratory reanalysis. Finally, the sensitivity of Xenon International for radioxenons is up to one order of magnitude better for the metastable isotopes than that of the SPALAX, with a shorter sampling duration of 6 h.

Test and Evaluation of Solar Foil Directly Mounted on the Ground (Final Report)

HyET Solar (HyET), established in 2012, is a small business developing a thin-film silicon solar photovoltaic (PV) product called "Power Foil" that can be mounted directly on the constructed earthen dykes. HyET's goals are for low-cost, efficient, generation of PV electricity at utility scale. HyET has requested assistance from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) to evaluate the performance of the Power Foil product in several outdoor environments, with a particular focus on 1) heat effects on efficiency and 2) heat and UV effects on reliability and durability. NREL has been working on PV module testing at laboratory scale for more than 40 years, and has the equipment and facilities required to provide the PV material testing required.

Design of a remote-controlled mount for IOTA’s magnet undulator

The SLAC undulator is essential for studies of synchrotron radiation produced by a single electron in IOTA. Since IOTA is meant for different experiments, the undulator is not always needed, so it must be pushed and pulled back depending upon the nature of the experiment. Moving the undulator manually result in significant time loss about 30 minutes for the controlled access, and about 30 minutes to achieve beam injector in IOTA. Because the operation is done manually is not easy to ensure a good repeatability of the undulator position. That’s why IOTA’s team decided to set-up a completely remote-controlled mount.

Power output of turbines mounted on tension-leg platforms subjected to fully developed ocean gravity waves

A concern in the deployment of large wind turbines on ocean floating platforms is the effect of floating-platform motions on their electrical power generation. Further, it is not clear how floating motions influence waking, which might affect the combined power generation of collections of turbines. We examine the average power output of a single and a collection of NREL 5 MW wind turbines mounted on a tension-leg platform (TLP) under the action of fully developed ocean wave motions, coupling floating motions with the large-eddy simulation (LES) of atmospheric and rotor dynamics. The ocean dynamics enter as fully developed waves derived from the Pierson–Moskowitz spectrum. To assess the influence of ocean motions, we performed simulations over the full range of wind speeds in the operational range of the turbine, reporting comparisons of average power output when the platforms are allowed to move to when they are held rigidly in place. In all simulations, we find that the effects of the TLP floating-platform's induced motions have a minor effect on single and multiple turbine power production and wake deficits. Even when using coherent and large amplitude harmonic-floating-induced perturbations, any significant wake modifications from floating motions are confined to the near-wake region, where downstream turbines are unlikely to be located. The relatively small amplitude of TLP motions relative to pre-existing turbulent fluctuations are the primary reason for low wake and power modifications downstream.

Organic Acid Aerosol Measurements from the Mount Airy Site for CoURAGE

This study investigates the prevalence and distribution of organic acid aerosols in a rural environment using filter-based measurements collected in Mount Airy, Maryland, during the CoURAGE campaign from March 19th through June 12th 2025. PM2.5 filters quantify a range of organic acids commonly associated with secondary organic aerosol formation and atmospheric oxidation processes. Each filter was collected using a 15 LPM sampler and was extracted in ultrapure Millipore water (>18 MΩ), allowing water-soluble organic acids to be extracted into solution for analysis. The extracts were then examined using a Waters Acquity I-Class PLUS liquid chromatography system coupled to a Bruker Maxis-II ultra-high-resolution Q-TOF mass spectrometer with electrospray ionization, providing high-sensitivity detection and separation of target compounds. Concentrations of several key organic acids were quantified, including acetic, propionic, pyruvic, butyric, oxalic, isovaleric, valeric, malonic, maleic, succinic, glutaric, malic, adipic, and citric acids. These findings contribute to ongoing efforts to understand regional aerosol composition and their impacts on aerosol-cloud interactions.

Downwelling Shortwave and Longwave Irradiance from CC-RIDER on Mount Soledad

The Clouds and Climate - Remote Integrated Deployment of Radiometers (CC-RIDER) is a suite of five Eppley Laboratory (Inc.) instruments that was deployed during EPCAPE at the secondary Mount Soledad site in La Jolla, CA. A primary and backup Precision Spectral Pyranometer (PSP Primary, PSP Backup) measured broadband downwelling shortwave irradiance in the spectral interval 280-2800 nm. A third Precision Spectral Pyranometer (PSP NIR) was fitted with a near-infrared long pass filter and measured downwelling shortwave irradiance in the spectral interval 780-2800 nm. A Total Ultraviolet Radiometer (TUVR) measured broadband downwelling broadband ultraviolet irradiance in the spectral interval 295-385 nm. A Precision Infrared Radiometer (PIR) Pyrgeometer measured downwelling broadband longwave irradiance in the spectral interval 3.5 - 50 microns. Data collection began on 18 April 2023 at 21:31 UTC and ended on 20 February 2024 at 22:34 UTC. Data were recorded by a Campbell Scientific (Inc.) CR1000X datalogger in one-minute intervals, for a total of 443584 data records. The datalogger was solar powered enabling data collection to proceed without interruption from start to finish.

Geomechanical Characterization of the Mount Simon Sandstone and Eau Claire Formation of Northern Illinois Basin

The purpose of this paper is to analyze publicly available geomechanical data from two carbon storage sites in the Illinois Basin: the Illinois Basin-Decatur Project (IBDP) in Macon County, IL and the FutureGen2.0 project in Morgan County, IL, cancelled before injection began. This study estimates the magnitudes and directions of the least compressive principal stress gradient using hydraulic fracture-based stress measurement tests, borehole breakouts, and sonic logs in the Eau Claire Formation (primary confining zone) and the Mount Simon Sandstone (targeted reservoir). The range of stresses expected in the underlying Precambrian basement is also investigated. The evaluation of the state of stress is carried out in a probabilistic manner using the State of Stress Analysis Tool (SOSAT) developed under the National Risk Assessment Partnership (NRAP) program. Finally, the paper also provides a discussion on distinctions between fracture initiation pressure, propagation pressure, and fracture closure pressure, given that hydraulic fracture testing results show a significant difference between these three values. The discussion also addresses why the fracture closure pressure should be preferred in injection pressure determinations, a critical point in geological carbon storage projects.

Sensitivity study on the fin effect of thermocouple mounted on the heated surface under film boiling condition

In the reactivity-initiated accident (RIA) scenario, right after the power burst with the occurrence of departure from nucleate boiling (DNB), the cladding temperature quickly reaches its maximum and is maintained in a steady film boiling regime. Then, under limited heat transfer performance of film boiling, the local cooling effect by the thermocouple wire may not be neglected. A computational model is developed to estimate the local cooling effect of the thermocouple wire mounted on the cladding surface under film boiling condition. The model predicts the temperature profile along the cladding surface as physically expected and is verified against the benchmark problem. Sensitivity studies reveal the significant effects of the thickness of vapor film layer and the diameter of thermocouple on the temperature drop near the thermocouple, for they increase the heat transfer area to the liquid water region. The impact of film boiling heat transfer coefficient, however, is not significant, as the primary heat transfer mechanism near the thermocouple is the heat conduction to the wire. Future study will include the contribution of radiative heat transfer between the cladding surface and the vapor film layer, as well as a transient power history which represents an actual RIA scenario.

System and method for geometrically constrained axisymmetric adjustable kinematic mount

The present disclosure relates to an adjustable mount apparatus. The apparatus may have a material support having a plurality of support legs, with each one of the support legs having a distal portion. A base assembly is used which has a plurality of laterally extending leg portions. A plurality of adjustably positionable capture subassemblies are slidably disposed within the laterally extending leg portions for releasably coupling to the distal portions of the support legs to hold the material support in a stable manner on the base assembly. A plurality of moveable elements, each being independently associated with one of the capture subassemblies, enable highly controlled linear movement of the capture subassemblies. Each capture subassembly engages with the distal portion of one of the support legs to exert a clamping force thereon, to affix the material support securely to the base assembly.

Vibration Fixture Design and Testing for Rigid - Y Cable Mount on MMRTG F4

INL is responsible for the fueling and testing of Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generators for NASA space missions. For the upcoming NASA mission "DRAGONFLY," INL is tasked with fueling and testing the Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator F4 (MMRTG F4). This involves conducting various tests, such as vibration testing and mass properties testing. For these tests, an interface is required between the MMRTG and the testing equipment, provided by cables mounted on a legacy bracket. Due to design changes in the cooling lines, a new cable – the Rigid Y cable – is to be used. The test described in this poster was to verify if the Rigid Y cable would survive the vibration tests. The results will determine the procedure for conducting the vibration tests on the MMRTG F4.
