A dataset of cyber-induced mechanical faults on buildings with network and buildings data

We have collected data of cyber-induced mechanical faults on buildings using a simulation platform. A DOE reference building model was used for running the simulation under a Rogue device attack and collected the network data as well as the physical buildings data to better understand the impacts of cyber attacks on the building and help identify the source of the mechanical fault with the network data. Alfalfa is the tool used for simulating the DOE reference buildings and acts as an interface to the model for querying the status and providing input externally. The Building Automation System (BAS) is the centralized controller providing control commands to other BACnet devices on the network based on the building status received from Alfalfa. The BACnet devices like damper will listen for the control commands from BAS on the BACnet network and implement it. The attacker is the malicious actor on the network creating disruptions by placing cyber-attacks.

System, Method and Apparatus for Conducting a Keyterm Search

A keyterm search is a method of searching a database for subsets of the database that are relevant to an input query. First, a number of relational models of subsets of a database are provided. A query is then input. The query can include one or more keyterms. Next, a gleaning model of the query is created. The gleaning model of the query is then compared to each one of the relational models of subsets of the database. The identifiers of the relevant subsets are then output.

Using a data base management system for modelling SSME test history data

The usefulness of a data base management system (DBMS) for modelling historical test data for the complete series of static test firings for the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME) was assessed. From an analysis of user data base query requirements, it became clear that a relational DMBS which included a relationally complete query language would permit a model satisfying the query requirements. Representative models and sample queries are discussed. A list of environment-particular evaluation criteria for the desired DBMS was constructed; these criteria include requirements in the areas of user-interface complexity, program independence, flexibility, modifiability, and output capability. The evaluation process included the construction of several prototype data bases for user assessement. The systems studied, representing the three major DBMS conceptual models, were: MIRADS, a hierarchical system; DMS-1100, a CODASYL-based network system; ORACLE, a relational system; and DATATRIEVE, a relational-type system.

Adding Hierarchical Objects to Relational Database General-Purpose XML-Based Information Managements

NETMARK is a flexible, high-throughput software system for managing, storing, and rapid searching of unstructured and semi-structured documents. NETMARK transforms such documents from their original highly complex, constantly changing, heterogeneous data formats into well-structured, common data formats in using Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) and/or Extensible Markup Language (XML). The software implements an object-relational database system that combines the best practices of the relational model utilizing Structured Query Language (SQL) with those of the object-oriented, semantic database model for creating complex data. In particular, NETMARK takes advantage of the Oracle 8i object-relational database model using physical-address data types for very efficient keyword searches of records across both context and content. NETMARK also supports multiple international standards such as WEBDAV for drag-and-drop file management and SOAP for integrated information management using Web services. The document-organization and -searching capabilities afforded by NETMARK are likely to make this software attractive for use in disciplines as diverse as science, auditing, and law enforcement.

Matrix-Based Process Modeling in Microsoft Excel

The purpose of this document is to describe the theory and methodology of matrix-based process modeling and demonstrate its use through a generic process model within Microsoft Excel. This type of model allows a modeler to quickly query various metrics, such as total production time, for a specified production run. These matrix models tend to be quick to build and use, but come with certain limitations and are more suited for smaller processes.

Robust Multi-fidelity Bayesian Optimization with Deep Kernel and Partition

Multi-fidelity Bayesian optimization (MFBO) is a powerful approach that utilizes lowfidelity, cost-effective sources to expedite the exploration and exploitation of a high-fidelity objective function. Existing MFBO methods with theoretical foundations either lack justification for performance improvements over single-fidelity optimization or rely on strong assumptions about the relationships between fidelity sources to construct surrogate models and direct queries to low-fidelity sources. To mitigate the dependency on cross-fidelity assumptions while maintaining the advantages of low-fidelity queries, we introduce a random sampling and partition-based MFBO framework with deep kernel learning. This framework is robust to cross-fidelity model misspecification and explicitly illustrates the benefits of low-fidelity queries. Our results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm effectively manages complex cross-fidelity relationships and efficiently optimizes the target fidelity function.

GraphAide: Advanced Graph-Assisted Query and Reasoning System

Curating knowledge from multiple siloed sources that contain both structured and unstructured data is a major challenge in many real-world applications. Pattern matching and querying represent fundamental tasks in modern data analytics that leverage this curated knowledge. The development of such applications necessitates overcoming several research challenges, including data extraction, named entity recognition, data modeling, and designing query interfaces. Moreover, the explainability of these functionalities is critical for their broader adoption. The emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs) has accelerated the development lifecycle of new capabilities. Nonetheless, there is an ongoing need for domain-specific tools tailored to user activities. The creation of digital assistants has gained considerable traction in recent years, with LLMs offering a promising avenue to develop such assistants utilizing domain-specific knowledge and assumptions. In this context, we introduce an advanced query and reasoning system, GraphAide, which constructs a knowledge graph (KG) from diverse sources and allows to query and reason over the resulting KG. GraphAide harnesses both the KG and LLMs to rapidly develop domain-specific digital assistants. It integrates design patterns from retrieval augmented generation (RAG) and the semantic web to create an agentic LLM application. GraphAide underscores the potential for streamlined and efficient development of specialized digital assistants, thereby enhancing their applicability across various domains.

Optimization on Manifolds via Graph Gaussian Processes

This paper integrates manifold learning techniques within a Gaussian process upper confidence bound algorithm to optimize an objective function on a manifold. Our approach is motivated by applications where a full representation of the manifold is not available and querying the objective is expensive. We rely on a point cloud of manifold samples to define a graph Gaussian process surrogate model for the objective. Query points are sequentially chosen using the posterior distribution of the surrogate model given all previous queries. We establish regret bounds in terms of the number of queries and the size of the point cloud. Several numerical examples complement the theory and illustrate the performance of our method.

Detailed Uncertainty Analysis of the Ares I A106 Liftoff/Transition Database

The Ares I A106 Liftoff/Transition Force and Moment Aerodynamics Database describes the aerodynamics of the Ares I Crew Launch Vehicle (CLV) from the moment of liftoff through the transition from high to low total angles of attack at low subsonic Mach numbers. The database includes uncertainty estimates that were developed using a detailed uncertainty quantification procedure. The Ares I Aerodynamics Panel developed both the database and the uncertainties from wind tunnel test data acquired in the NASA Langley Research Center s 14- by 22-Foot Subsonic Wind Tunnel Test 591 using a 1.75 percent scale model of the Ares I and the tower assembly. The uncertainty modeling contains three primary uncertainty sources: experimental uncertainty, database modeling uncertainty, and database query interpolation uncertainty. The final database and uncertainty model represent a significant improvement in the quality of the aerodynamic predictions for this regime of flight over the estimates previously used by the Ares Project. The maximum possible aerodynamic force pushing the vehicle towards the launch tower assembly in a dispersed case using this database saw a 40 percent reduction from the worst-case scenario in previously released data for Ares I.

Dimensional Control over Metal Halide Perovskite Crystallization Guided by Active Learning

Metal halide perovskite (MHP) derivatives, a promising class of optoelectronic materials, have been synthesized with a range of dimensionalities that govern their optoelectronic properties and determine their applications. We demonstrate a data-driven approach combining active learning and high-throughput experimentation to discover, control, and understand the formation of phases with different dimensionalities in the morpholinium (morph) lead iodide system. Using a robot-assisted workflow, we synthesized and characterized two novel MHP derivatives that have distinct optical properties: a one-dimensional (1D) morphPbI 3 phase ([C 4 H 10 NO][PbI 3 ]) and a two-dimensional (2D) (morph) 2 PbI 4 phase ([C 4 H 10 NO] 2 [PbI 4 ]). To efficiently acquire the data needed to construct a machine learning (ML) model of the reaction conditions where the 1D and 2D phases are formed, data acquisition was guided by a diverse-mini-batch-sampling active learning algorithm, using prediction confidence as a stopping criterion. Querying the ML model uncovered the reaction parameters that have the most significant effects on dimensionality control. Based on these insights, we discuss possible reaction schemes that may selectively promote the formation of morph-Pb-I phases with different dimensionalities. The data-driven approach presented here, including the use of additives to manipulate dimensionality, will be valuable for controlling the crystallization of a range of materials over large reaction-composition spaces.

Role of Uncertainty Quantification in the Explainability of Large Language Models for the Nuclear Industry

The meteoric rise of generative artificial intelligence (AI) large language models (LLMs) has created an opportunity to utilize them to increase efficiencies in a multitude of industries. While LLMs carry great potential to revolutionize the manner in which work is performed, numerous known deficiencies limit their utility, including the black box nature of the models, the stochastic nature of the response (i.e., presenting the same prompt multiple times results in different responses), and the potential for hallucination. Widespread adoption of LLMs in safety-critical industries such as nuclear will require some form of explainability to assure end users that the LLM’s response to a given query is valid. Model uncertainty is inherently linked to the concepts of trust and explainability, and can be used to identify situations in which the model is insufficiently certain about its answer. Although uncertainty is not enough in and of itself to determine the suitability of an answer—a model can be very certain of an inaccurate answer—it still provides valuable supporting information. Practical methodologies for gauging or quantifying the uncertainty in LLM outputs are presented herein, along with examples based on nuclear-specific prompts.

Exploring scenarios for enhanced fuel compression and performance on the National Ignition Facility with machine-learning-aided design techniques

Recent fusion experiments on the National Ignition Facility (NIF) have achieved ignition, producing multi-MJ fusion yields for input laser energies of roughly 2 MJ [Abu-Shawareb et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 132, 065102 (2024)]. Building on the success of the target designs that have achieved ignition, we explore new implosion scenarios predicted to generate significantly more compression of the dense DT ice layer and correspondingly higher yields while preserving many of the key physics characteristics of present-day ignition designs. Our main result is a novel 3-shock implosion scheme that effectively minimizes the shock-induced entropy in the dense, accelerating DT shell and maximizes the resulting fuel compression subject to a fixed leading shock strength consistent with present-day ignition experiments, which is necessary to melt the crystalline high-density carbon ablator. Compared to the first NIF experiment to fulfill Lawson's ignition criterion, shot N210808 [Abu-Shawareb et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 129, 075001 (2022)], our design exhibits a 40% increase in simulated peak areal density (ρR) and a 5× increase in 1D fusion yield using a 4% lighter ablator and identical DT payloads. We also present a complete integrated 2D hohlraum design and laser pulse specifications capable of generating the desired 3-shock drive and maintaining control of the low-mode capsule implosion symmetry, where the increase in simulated 2D yield relative to N210808 is > 10×. This new implosion regime was discovered with help from a machine-learning-enabled capsule design optimization framework. We outline the workflow this automated tool uses to identify improved design candidates by running several rounds of capsule simulations, constructing a surrogate model mapping input variations to key physics output quantities, and querying the resulting statistical model to propose adjustments to the x-ray drive and capsule to reach a set of physics objectives prescribed by the designer.

An Extensible Schema-less Database Framework for Managing High-throughput Semi-Structured Documents

Object-Relational database management system is an integrated hybrid cooperative approach to combine the best practices of both the relational model utilizing SQL queries and the object oriented, semantic paradigm for supporting complex data creation. In this paper, a highly scalable, information on demand database framework, called NETMARK is introduced. NETMARK takes advantages of the Oracle 8i object-relational database using physical addresses data types for very efficient keyword searches of records for both context and content. NETMARK was originally developed in early 2000 as a research and development prototype to solve the vast amounts of unstructured and semi-structured documents existing within NASA enterprises. Today, NETMARK is a flexible, high throughput open database framework for managing, storing, and searching unstructured or semi structured arbitrary hierarchal models, XML and HTML.
