Particle Vertical Mixing and Horizontal Conveyance Within an Ambient Temperature Fluidized Bed

Previous studies have shown the advantages of particle-to-sCO2 fluidized bed (FB) heat exchangers, which include high heat transfer coefficients, low material cost, and the ability to horizontally convey solid particles. This paper outlines the design and testing of a compact cold flow FB test apparatus to characterize horizontal conveyance through convolutions within a 100 kWth FB heat exchanger design. Horizontal conveyance is an advantage in FBs because it enables more compact designs for heat exchangers. Two mass flow rates, 0.5 & 1 kg/s, at the inlet & outlet of the FB. To determine consistency of the flow rates, Student’s t-tests were used to assess whether the inlet & outlet values were statistically similar. The mass flow rate exiting the bed was statistically similar to the flow rate entering the bed for both cases, but each case featured a wider range and standard deviation. The range and standard deviation of the 1 kg/s flow rate was 0.69-1.23 kg/s and 0.12 kg/s respectively, and the 0.5 kg/s test featured a range and standard deviation of 0.37-0.73 kg/s and 0.09 kg/s, respectively. These measurements provide confidence that large-scale designs can successfully horizontally convey particles at ````~1.5x minimum fluidization velocity (Umf) without significant variation in flow rate. A method to characterize the degree of particle vertical mixing and bubble frequency within the FB is also introduced. By using a high-resolution camera together with particle velocimetry, particle motion in the X and Y directions can be estimated to assess bed mixing and bubble frequency.

Broad Applicability of Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy to the Measurement of Oxygen Nonstoichiometry in Mixed Ion and Electron Conductors

Oxygen non-stoichiometry is a fundamental feature of mixed ion and electron conductors (MIECs). In this work a general electrochemical method for determining non-stoichiometry in thin film MIECs, via measurement of the chemical capacitance, is demonstrated using ceria and ceria-zirconia (Ce 0.8 Zr 0.2 O 2-δ ) as representative materials. A.C. impedance data are collected from both materials at high temperature (750-900 °C) under reducing conditions with oxygen partial pressure (pO 2 ) in the range 10-13 to 10-20 atm. Additional measurements of ceria-zirconia films are made under relatively oxidizing conditions with pO 2 in the range 0.2 to 10 -4 atm and temperatures of 800-900 °C. Under reducing conditions, the impedance spectra are described by a simple circuit in which a resistor is in series with a resistor and capacitor in parallel, and thickness dependent measurements are used to resolve the capacitance into interfacial and chemical terms. Under more oxidizing conditions, the impedance spectra (of Ce 0.8 Zr 0.2 O 2-δ ) reveal an additional diffusional feature, which enables determination of the ionic resistance of the film in addition to the capacitance, and hence the transport properties. A generalized mathematical formalism is presented for recovering the non-stoichiometry from the chemical capacitance, without recourse to defect chemical models. The ceria non-stoichiometry values are in good agreement with literature values determined by thermogravimetric measurements but display considerably less scatter and are collected on considerably shorter timescales. Here, the thermodynamic analysis of Ce 0.8 Zr 0.2 O 2-δ corroborates earlier findings that introduction of Zr into ceria enhances its reducibility.

Online Characterization of Mixed Plastic Waste Using Machine Learning and Mid-Infrared Spectroscopy

To recycle the mixed plastic wastes (MPW), it is important to obtain the compositional information online in real time. We present a sensing framework based on a convolutional neural network (CNN) and mid-infrared spectroscopy (MIR) for the rapid and accurate characterization of MPW. The MPW samples are placed on a moving platform to mimic the industrial environment. The MIR spectra are collected at the rate of 100 Hz, and the proposed CNN architecture can reach an overall prediction accuracy close to 100%. Therefore, the proposed method paves the way toward the online MPW characterization in industrial applications where high throughput is needed.

Techno-economic and Life Cycle Analysis of MixAlco® Processes for Mixed Alcohol Production from Brown Algae

The need for producing renewable fuels from biomass has increased due to depleting fossil resources and environmental concerns. However, the low fraction of biomass carbon converted to product is an undeniable drawback for most current biofuel productions from fermentation due to undecomposed lignin in biomass composition and carbon loss as CO 2 . In this work, two main production routes of the MixAlco® process, the ketonization route (KR) and esterification route (ER) are evaluated for the mixed alcohol production by brown algae, a third-generation biomass without lignin. A novel fermentation process using syntrophic bacteria consortia (SBC) is developed to produce acetic acid from waste gas produced by KR and ER process. The paper investigates the integrated flowsheet for these alternative routes, using techno-economic and life cycle analysis to compare the minimum selling price and environmental impacts. From TEA, we find that the overall costs for KR and ER are lower than the SBC processes. The cost of ketonization routes is lower than esterification routes. The capital cost and operating cost for the ER+SBC process are the highest. Raw materials and utilities are the two major costs for all the processing routes examined. Here, the MSP for the ER+SBC process is the lowest out of all four routes. ER process performs the best in terms of environmental impacts except in water depletion compared with other processes, while the KR process performs the worst regarding the environmental metrics.

Influence of Rare-Earth Ion Radius on Metal–Metal Charge Transfer in Trinuclear Mixed-Valent Complexes

We report the synthesis and characterization of a highly conjugated bisferrocenyl pyrrolediimine ligand, Fc 2 PyrDIH (1), and its trinuclear complexes with rare earth ions—(Fc 2 PyrDI)M(N(TMS) 2 ) 2 (2-M, M = Sc, Y, Lu, La). Crystal structures, NMR spectra, and UV/Vis-NIR data are presented. The latter are in good agreement with DFT calculations, illuminating the impact of the rare earth ionic radius on NIR charge transfer excitations. For [2-Sc] + , the charge transfer is at 11500 cm -1 , while for [2-Y] + only a d-d transition at 8000 cm -1 is observed. Lu has an ionic radius in between Sc and Y, and the [2-Lu] + complex exhibits both transitions. From TDDFT analysis we assign the 11500 cm -1 transition as a mixture of MLCT and MMCT, rather than pure metal-to-metal CT, because it has significant ligand character. Typically, the ferrocenes have high rotational freedom in bis-ferrocenyl mixed valent complexes. However, in the present (Fc 2 PyrDI)M(N(TMS) 2 ) 2 complexes, ligand-ligand repulsions lock the rotational freedom, so that rare earth ionic radius-dependent geometric differences increasingly influence orbital overlap as the ionic radius falls. The Marcus-Hush coupling constant HAB trends as: [2-Sc] + >[2-Lu] + >[2-Y] +

Electrochemical Conversion of CO 2 to Methyl Formate in a Flow Electrolyzer with Mixed Propylene Carbonate/Methanol Catholyte

Despite the promise of electrochemical carbon dioxide reduction as a technology for the production of clean fuels and decarbonization of the chemical industry, research has mostly focused on aqueous systems with a relatively limited set of products that have been achieved via electrosynthesis. Increasingly, CO 2 electroreduction in nonaqueous solvents is being pursued to develop new avenues for expanding the suite of products that can be made with high selectivity. CO 2 reduction in alcohols coupled with in situ esterification to produce esters is one such route that utilizes nonaqueous electrolyte. To be practical, such electrochemical syntheses need to be translated to a high-performance reactor such as a flow electrolyzer. However, many organic solvents, such as alcohols, wet and flood porous electrodes, thus impeding reactor performance. In this work, methanol was mixed with propylene carbonate as a catholyte for a gas-fed CO 2 flow electrolyzer that avoided cathode flooding. Simultaneously, a dual aqueous anolyte was used for water oxidation as a scalable and sustainable anodic half-reaction. The performance effect of methanol concentration, catholyte acidity, CO 2 flow rate, and dilute water in the catholyte were investigated. With 10 vol % methanol in 90 vol % propylene carbonate, 63% faradaic efficiency for methyl formate ester product was sustained without cathode flooding. However, improvements are still needed to lower the cell resistance and further increase the operating current density.

Mixed‐Phase Clouds Over the Southern Ocean as Observed From Satellite and Surface Based Lidar and Radar

Abstract This study investigates the occurrence of mixed‐phase clouds (MPC, i.e., cloud layers containing both liquid and ice water at sub‐freezing temperatures) over the Southern Ocean (SO) using space‐ and surface‐based lidar and radar observations. The occurrence of supercooled clouds is dominated by geometrically thin (<1 km) layers that rarely contain ice. We diagnose layers that are geometrically thicker than 1 km to contain ice ~65% and ~4% of the time from below by surface remote sensors and from above by orbiting remote sensors, respectively. We examine the discrepancy in MPC occurrence statistics as diagnosed from below and above the cloud layer. From above, we find that MPC occurrence has a gradient associated with the Antarctic Polar Front near 55°S with a rare occurrence of satellite‐derived MPC south of that latitude. In contrast, surface sensors find ice in 33% of supercooled liquid water layers. We infer using observing system simulation experiments and data analysis that space‐based lidar cannot identify the occurrence of MPC except when secondary ice‐forming processes operate in convection that is, sufficiently strong to loft ice crystals to cloud tops. We conclude that the CALIPSO phase statistics of MPC have a severe low bias in MPC occurrence. Based on surface‐based statistics in the SO, we present a parameterization of the frequency of MPC as a function of cloud top temperature that differs substantially from that used in recent climate model simulations.

A competition between 2D and 3D magnetic orderings in novel mixed valent copper frameworks

Low-dimensional hybrid inorganic–organic frameworks exhibit high structural flexibility and allow for the inclusion of various magnetic and optically-active species into their host structures. The emergence of copper-based hybrid structures for various optical applications provides a promising foundation for exploring the integration of magnetic sublattices, paving the way for advancements in magneto-optical coupling and multifunctional materials. Herein, we introduce a novel class of hybrid copper frameworks with covalently-connected alternating magnetic 2D copper(II) formate and non-magnetic copper(I) bromide layers. The anionic framework is stabilized by A + cations to form ACu 5 Br 4 (COOH) 4 (A + = Na + , K + , Rb + , NH 4 + ) semiconductors (bandgaps 2.1–2.2 eV) with optical transitions suitable for optoelectronic applications. Comprehensive magnetometry studies show that ACu 5 Br 4 (COOH) 4 compounds exhibit low-dimensional 2D short-range antiferromagnetic order within the formate layers, characterized by strong exchange coupling (J/k B ∼ −100 K). Upon further temperature reduction, interactions between Cu(II) layers give rise to 3D long-range magnetic order at ∼40 K, despite the large (8.6–8.8 Å) spatial separation of the magnetic Cu(II) formate layers by nonmagnetic Cu(I)–Br bridging layers. This transition is further supported by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. In conclusion, this study expands our understanding of low-dimensional hybrid frameworks and opens new avenues for the design of 2D multifunctional materials.

Parametric evaluation of ducted fuel injection in an optically accessible mixing-controlled compression-ignition engine with two- and four-duct assemblies

Ducted fuel injection (DFI) is a strategy to improve fuel/charge-gas mixing in direct-injection compression-ignition engines. DFI involves injecting fuel along the axis of a small tube in the combustion chamber, which promotes the formation of locally leaner mixtures in the autoignition zone relative to conventional diesel combustion. Previous work has demonstrated that DFI is effective at curtailing engine-out soot emissions across a wide range of operating conditions. This study extends previous investigations, presenting engine-out emissions and efficiency trends between ducted two-orifice and ducted four-orifice injector tip configurations. For each configuration, parameters investigated include injection pressure, injection duration, intake manifold pressure, intake manifold temperature, start of combustion timing, and intake-oxygen mole fraction. For both configurations and across all parameters, DFI reduced engine-out soot emissions compared to conventional diesel combustion, with little effect on other emissions and engine efficiency. Emissions trends for both configurations were qualitatively the same across the parameters investigated. The four-duct configuration had higher thermal efficiency and indicated-specific engine-out nitrogen oxide emissions but lower indicated-specific engine-out hydrocarbon and carbon monoxide emissions than the two-duct assembly. Both configurations achieved indicated-specific engine-out emissions for both soot and nitrogen oxides that comply with current on- and off-road heavy-duty regulations in the United States without exhaust-gas aftertreatment at an intake-oxygen mole fraction of 12%. High-speed in-cylinder imaging of natural soot luminosity shows that some conditions include a second soot-production phase late in the cycle. The probability of these late-cycle events is sensitive to both the number of ducted sprays and the operating conditions.

Upcycling of post-consumer mixed polyolefin feedstock: An economic and technical evaluation

Here, this study reports techno-economic and life cycle analyses to evaluate the economic and environmental impacts of mechanically recycled PE/PP blends in the presence of rheology modifiers. Additionally, fiber-reinforced composites derived from the compatibilized blends were prepared and evaluated for their performance compared with virgin plastics. Results suggest that compatibilized PE/PP blends exhibit a 70% lower selling price compared to virgin PE. Furthermore, these blends achieved a 74% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions or climate change impact compared to the virgin counterpart. Fiber-reinforced composites from compatibilized PE/PP blends demonstrated improved or comparable mechanical properties relative to composites made from virgin PE/PP blends. Based on their favorable cost and environmental impact, along with performance comparable to virgin composites, compatibilized PP/PE composites made from post-consumer plastics can find applications in large-scale composite manufacturing.

3D Lead-Organoselenide-Halide Perovskites and their Mixed-Chalcogenide and Mixed-Halide Alloys

Here, we incorporate Se into the 3D halide perovskite framework using the zwitterionic ligand: SeCYS ( + NH 3 (CH 2 ) 2 Se - ), which occupies both the X - and A + sites in the prototypical ABX 3 perovskite. The new organoselenide-halide perovskites: (SeCYS)PbX 2 (X=Cl, Br) expand upon the recently discovered organosulfide-halide perovskites. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction and pair distribution function analysis reveal the average structures of the organoselenide-halide perovskites, whereas the local lead coordination environments and their distributions were probed through solid-state 77 Se and 207 Pb NMR, complemented by theoretical simulations. Density functional theory calculations illustrate that the band structures of (SeCYS)PbX 2 largely resemble those of their S analogs, with similar band dispersion patterns, yet with a considerable band gap decrease. Optical absorbance measurements indeed show band gaps of 2.07 and 1.86 eV for (SeCYS)PbX 2 with X=Cl and Br, respectively. We further demonstrate routes to alloying the halides (Cl, Br) and chalcogenides (S, Se) continuously tuning the band gap from 1.86 to 2.31 eV–straddling the ideal range for tandem solar cells or visible-light photocatalysis. The comprehensive description of the average and local structures, and how they can fine-tune the band gap and potential trap states, respectively, establishes the foundation for understanding this new perovskite family, which combines solid-state and organo-main-group chemistry.
