Shallow cumulus and cumulus congestus clouds play an important role in the large-scale tropical circulation by mixing heat and moisture vertically and preconditioning the environment for deeper convection. Different representations of these shallow clouds account for much of the spread in General Circulation Model (GCMs) climate sensitivity, potentially because of how entrainment is represented in GCM parameterizations. This study uses observations from the Department of Energy's Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) mobile facility deployed at Manacapuru, Brazil, during the Green Ocean Amazon (GoAmazon2014/5) Campaign. Environmental thermodynamic profiles and observations of cloud top height (CTH) are used to constrain an entraining plume model to estimate bulk entrainment rates (ERs). Estimates of CTH are obtained from a combination of vertically pointing W-band ARM cloud radar and 1,290 MHz Radar Wind Profiler observations. A combination of radiosonde, microwave radiometer profiler, and microwave radiometer observations provides new best estimates of the environmental thermodynamic state. We quantify uncertainty in ERs considering uncertainties in estimated CTH, environmental thermodynamic properties, and assumed initial parcel characteristics. We find ERs ranging from 0.16 to 2.8 km -1 with an average of 0.58 ± 0.10 km -1 over a selected population of 469 shallow cumulus and cumulus congestus clouds. Using the retrieved estimates of ER, we evaluate several entrainment closures that are currently used in atmospheric models or have been proposed based on theory or large eddy simulation. Finally, entrainment rates in cumulus clouds are weakly correlated with low-level buoyancy, cloud depth, and cloud size.
A system for passive microwave remote sensing using at least one microwave radiometer includes a fixed body portion and a mobile body portion. The mobile body portion is configured for rotatably coupling with the fixed body portion for rotation about a rotation axis. The mobile body portion is configured for supporting the microwave radiometer therein such that the microwave radiometer rotates about the rotation axis when the mobile body portion is rotated about the rotation axis such that a polarization axis of the radiometer is aligned with an earth axis. The fixed body portion includes a motor mechanism for effecting rotation of the mobile body portion. In an embodiment, the mobile body portion includes a plurality of body section, each body section being configured for supporting a microwave radiometer therein. In another embodiment, each one of the plurality of body sections is configured to be interchangeably coupled with each other.

This data file contains retrievals of cloud-effective-radius and cloud-droplet-number-concentration for low clouds based on the Dong et al. 1998 retrieval technique for the MICRE campaign. The retrieval is based on observed downwelling broadband SW fluxes and microwave-radiometer-retrieved-liquid-water-path averaged on a 5 minute time scale (mean when low cloud is present). Details on the algorithm and analysis of results are given in Tansey et al. 2024 (submitted DOI: 10.22541/essoar.173482310.03809503/v1). The data is limited to the period 20160410 to 20160612 AND 20170103 to 20170214 during which time good quality microwave-radiometer measurements are available.

MICROBASE is a baseline retrieval of cloud microphysical properties. It uses a combination of observations from the cloud radar, ceilometer, micropulse lidar, microwave radiometer, and balloon-borne radiosonde soundings in order to produce instantaneous vertical profiles of cloud liquid water content (LWC), cloud ice water content (IWC), liquid cloud particle effective radius (LIQRE), and ice cloud particle effective radius (ICERE). Uncertainites are also produced by the VAP. The inputs are by the following VAPs: Active Remote Sensing of Clouds (ARSCL) Merged Sounding (MERGESONDE) Microwave Radiometer Retrievals (MWRRET) The output are daily files.
Standard Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility sounding files provide atmospheric state data in one dimension of increasing time and height per sonde launch. Many applications require a quick estimate of the atmospheric state at higher time resolution. The INTERPOLATEDSONDE (i.e., Interpolated Sounding) Value-Added Product (VAP) transforms sounding data into continuous daily files on a fixed time-height grid, at 1-minute time resolution, on 332 levels, from the surface up to a limit of approximately 40 km. The grid extends that high so the full height of soundings can be captured; however, most soundings terminate at an altitude between 25 and 30 km, above which no data is provided. Between soundings, the VAP linearly interpolates atmospheric state variables in time for each height level. In addition, INTERPOLATEDSONDE provides relative humidity scaled to microwave radiometer (MWR) observations. The INTERPOLATEDSONDE VAP, a continuous time-height grid of relative humidity-corrected sounding data, is intended to provide input to higher-order products, such as the Merged Soundings (MERGESONDE; Troyan 2012) VAP, which extends INTERPOLATEDSONDE by incorporating model data. The INTERPOLATEDSONDE VAP also is used to correct gaseous attenuation of radar reflectivity in products such as the KAZRCOR VAP.
