Analytical harmonic vibrational frequencies with VV10-containing density functionals: Theory, efficient implementation, and benchmark assessments

VV10 is a powerful nonlocal density functional for long-range correlation that is used to include dispersion effects in many modern density functionals, such as the meta-generalized gradient approximation (mGGA), B97M-V, the hybrid GGA, ωB97X-V, and the hybrid mGGA, ωB97M-V. While energies and analytical gradients for VV10 are already widely available, this study reports the first derivation and efficient implementation of the analytical second derivatives of the VV10 energy. The additional compute cost of the VV10 contributions to analytical frequencies is shown to be small in all but the smallest basis sets for recommended grid sizes. Here, this study also reports the assessment of VV10-containing functionals for predicting harmonic frequencies using the analytical second derivative code. The contribution of VV10 to simulating harmonic frequencies is shown to be small for small molecules but important for systems where weak interactions are important, such as water clusters. In the latter cases, B97M-V, ωB97M-V, and ωB97X-V perform very well. The convergence of frequencies with respect to the grid size and atomic orbital basis set size is studied, and recommendations are reported. Finally, scaling factors to allow comparison of scaled harmonic frequencies with experimental fundamental frequencies and to predict zero-point vibrational energy are presented for some recently developed functionals (including r2SCAN, B97M-V, ωB97X-V, M06-SX, and ωB97M-V).

Comparing first-principles density functionals plus corrections for the lattice dynamics of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6

The enigmatic mechanism underlying unconventional high-temperature superconductivity, especially the role of lattice dynamics, has remained a subject of debate. Theoretical insights have long been hindered due to the lack of an accurate first-principles description of the lattice dynamics of cuprates. Recently, using the r2SCAN meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) functional, we have been able to achieve accurate phonon spectra of an insulating cuprate YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6 and discover significant magnetoelastic coupling in experimentally interesting Cu–O bond stretching optical modes [Ning et al., Phys. Rev. B 107, 045126 (2023)]. We extend this work by comparing Perdew–Burke–Ernzerhof and r2SCAN performances with corrections from the on-site Hubbard U and the D4 van der Waals (vdW) methods, aiming at further understanding on both the materials science side and the density functional side. We demonstrate the importance of vdW and self-interaction corrections for accurate first-principles YBa 2 Cu 3 O 6 lattice dynamics. Since r2SCAN by itself partially accounts for these effects, the good performance of r2SCAN is now more fully explained. Finally, in addition, the performances of the Tao–Mo series of meta-GGAs, which are constructed in a different way from the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-GGA and its revised version r2SCAN, are also compared and discussed.

Shortcomings of meta-GGA functionals when describing magnetism

Several recent studies have shown that SCAN, a functional belonging to the meta-generalized gradient approximation (MGGA) family, leads to significantly overestimated magnetic moments in itinerant ferromagnetic metals. However, this behavior is not inherent to the MGGA level of approximation since TPSS, for instance, does not lead to such severe overestimations. In order to provide a broader view of the accuracy of MGGAfunctionals for magnetism, we extend the assessment to more functionals but also to antiferromagnetic solids. The results show that to describe magnetism there is overall no real advantage in using a MGGA functional compared to GGAs. For both types of approximation, an improvement in ferromagnetic metals is necessarily accompanied by a deterioration (underestimation) in antiferromagnetic insulators, and vice versa. Furthermore, we also provide some analysis in order to understand in more detail the relation between the mathematical form of the functionals and the results.

Meta-GGA performance in solids at almost GGA cost

A recent modification, r 2 SCAN, of the strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN) meta-generalized gradient approximation (GGA) exchange-correlation functional mostly eliminates numerical instabilities and attendant integration grid sensitivities exhibited by SCAN. Here, we show that the successful deorbitalization of SCAN to SCAN-L (SCAN with density Laplacian dependence) carries over directly to yield r 2 SCAN-L. A major benefit is that the high iteration counts that hindered the use of SCAN-L are eliminated in r 2 SCAN-L. It therefore is a computationally much faster meta-GGA than its orbital-dependent antecedent. In this work, validation data for molecular heats of formation, bond lengths, and vibration frequencies (G3/99X, T96-R, and T82-F test sets, respectively) and on lattice constants, and cohesive energies (for 55 solids) and bulk moduli (for 40 solids) are provided. In addition, we show that the overmagnetization of bcc Fe, hcp Co, and fcc Ni persists in r 2 SCAN but does not appear in r 2 SCAN-L. Distinct from SCAN, both r 2 SCAN and r 2 SCAN-L give the correct nonmagnetic ground state for bcc V.

Meta-GGA exchange-correlation free energy density functional to increase the accuracy of warm dense matter simulations

We discuss strategies for thermalization of the ground-state meta-generalized gradient approximation (meta-GGA) exchange-correlation (XC) functionals. A simple but accurate scheme is implemented via universal additive thermal correction to XC using a perturbative-like self-consistent approach. The additive correction with explicit temperature dependence is applied to the ground-state deorbitalized, strongly constrained and appropriately normed (SCAN-L) meta-GGA XC leading to thermal XC functional denoted here as T-SCAN-L. Thermal T-SCAN-L meta-GGA functional shows significant improvement in density functional theory calculation accuracy for warm dense matter by a factor of 3 to 10, achieving unprecedented accuracy of total pressure between a few tenths and 1% when compared to traditional XC functionals, as demonstrated by the comparison to pathintegral Monte Carlo simulations for helium equation of state. Furthermore, the T-SCAN-L calculations of dc conductivity of warm dense aluminum also give better agreement with experiments over other XC functionals such as PBE and SCAN-L.

Shock-induced metallization of polystyrene along the principal Hugoniot investigated by advanced thermal density functionals

To date, none of the ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations of polystyrene, often used as an ablator material in inertial confinement fusion targets, with the standard ground-state exchange-correlation (XC) functional in density-functional theory can satisfactorily agree with experiments in terms of reflectivity measurements. Here, we use recently developed thermal strongly constrained and appropriately normed Laplacian dependent meta-generalized gradient approximation XC density functional (T-SCAN-L) and thermal hybrid XC density functional (KDT0) to show that the inclusion of thermal and inhomogeneity effects is crucial for accurate prediction of structural evolution and corresponding insulator-metal transition (IMT) during shock compression. Optical reflectivity calculated as an indicator of IMT is in perfect accord with experimental data.

Probing the state of hydrogen in δ − AlOOH at mantle conditions with machine learning potential

Hydrous and nominally anhydrous minerals are a fundamental class of solids of enormous significance to geophysics. They are the water carriers in the deep geological water cycle and impact structural, elastic, plastic, and thermodynamic properties and phase relations in Earth's forming aggregates (rocks). They play a critical role in the geochemical and geophysical processes that shape the planet. Their complexity has prevented predictive calculations of their properties, but progress in materials simulations ushered by machine-learning potentials is transforming this state of affairs. Here, we adopt a hybrid approach that combines deep learning potentials (DPs) with the strongly constrained and appropriately normed meta-generalized gradient approximation functional to simulate a prototypical hydrous system. We illustrate the success of this approach to simulate δ − AlOOH ( δ ) , a phase capable of transporting water down to near the core-mantle boundary of the Earth ( ∼ 2900 km depth and ∼ 135 GPa ) in subducting slabs. A high-throughput sampling of phase space using molecular dynamics simulations with DPs sheds light on the hydrogen-bond behavior and proton diffusion at geophysical conditions. These simulations provide a pathway for a deeper understanding of these crucial components that shape Earth's internal state. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Exploring interlayer coupling in the twisted bilayer PtTe 2

We have investigated interlayer interactions in the bilayer PtTe 2 system, which influence the electronic energy bands near the Fermi level. Our diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) calculations for the high-symmetry bilayer stackings (AA, AB, AC) manifest distinct interlayer binding characteristics among the stacking modes by revealing significantly different interlayer separations depending on the stacking, which is critical to understanding the interlayer coupling of the twisted bilayers consisting of various local stacking arrangements. Furthermore, a comparison between the interlayer separations obtained from DMC and density functional theory (DFT) shows that meta-generalized gradient approximation (GGA)-based van der Waals–DFT results agree with DMC for different layer stackings, including twisted bilayers, but only the ground-state AA stacking matches well with GGA-based DFT predictions. This underscores the importance of accurate exchange-correlation potentials even for capturing the stacking-dependent interlayer binding properties. We further show that the variability in DFT-predicted interlayer separations is responsible for the large discrepancy of band structures in the 21 . 79 ∘ twisted bilayer PtTe 2 , affecting its classification as metallic or insulating. These results demonstrate the importance of obtaining a correct description of stacking-dependent interlayer coupling in modeling delicate bilayer systems at finite twists.
