First measurement of prompt and non-prompt D* + vector meson spin alignment in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

This letter reports the first measurement of spin alignment, with respect to the helicity axis, for D* + vector mesons and their charge conjugates from charm-quark hadronisation (prompt) and from beauty meson decays (non-prompt) in hadron collisions. The measurements were performed at midrapidity (|y| < 0.8) as a function of transverse momentum (p T ) in proton–proton (pp) collisions collected by ALICE at the centre-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV. The diagonal spin density matrix element $ρ$00 of D* + mesons was measured from the angular distribution of the D* + → D 0 (→ K - π + )π + decay products, in the D* + rest frame, with respect to the D* + momentum direction in the pp centre of mass frame. The $ρ$00 value for prompt D* + mesons is consistent with 1/3, which implies no spin alignment. However, for non prompt D* + mesons an evidence of $ρ$00 larger than 1/3 is found. The measured value of the spin density element is $ρ$00 = 0.455±0.022(stat.)±0.035(syst.) in the 5 < p T < 20 GeV/c interval, which is consistent with a Pythia 8 Monte Carlo simulation coupled with the EvtGen package, which implements the helicity conservation in the decay of D* + meson from beauty mesons. In non-central heavy-ion collisions, the spin of the D* + mesons may be globally aligned with the direction of the initial angular momentum and magnetic field. Based on the results for pp collisions reported in this letter it is shown that alignment of non-prompt D* + mesons due to the helicity conservation coupled to the collective anisotropic expansion may mimic the signal of global spin alignment in heavy-ion collisions.

Measurement of 𝐵 meson production fraction ratios in proton-proton collisions at √𝑠 = 13 TeV using open-charm and charmonium decays

Production fraction ratios of 𝐵 + , 𝐵 0 , and 𝐵$^{0}_{𝑠}$ mesons are measured in proton-proton collisions at √𝑠 = 13 TeV using a special dataset recorded in 2018 with high-rate triggers designed to collect an unbiased sample of 1⁢010 𝑏 hadrons with the CMS experiment at the LHC. These data allow the study of the open-charm decays of 𝐵 mesons (𝐵 (𝑠) → 𝜋⁢𝐷 (𝑠) ) where the 𝐷 meson decays into fully hadronic final states. By utilizing known branching fractions and precise theoretical calculations, production fraction ratios as functions of 𝐵 meson transverse momentum (𝑝 T ) and rapidity (𝑦) are measured using open-charm decays in the kinematic range of 8 < 𝑝 T < 60 GeV and |𝑦| <2.25. In addition, the same dataset is used to measure the relative production fraction ratios with the charmonium decay channels [𝐵 (𝑠) →𝑋⁢𝐽/𝜓 with 𝑋 indicating a 𝐾 + , 𝐾*(892) 0 , or 𝜙⁡(1020) meson] where the 𝐽/𝜓 meson decays into a pair of muons. The open-charm results are used to normalize the relative production fraction ratios obtained from the charmonium samples. Measurements of the ratios of branching fractions of 𝐵 meson decays to charmonium and open-charm final states are also reported, which will improve the world-average values of these ratios. Finally, we test isospin invariance in 𝐵 meson production in proton-proton collisions and observe that it holds within the experimental precision.

Open string QED meson description of the X17 particle and dark matter

As a quark and an antiquark cannot be isolated, the intrinsic motion of a composite $q\overline{q}$ system in its lowest-energy states lies predominantly in 1+1 dimensions, as in an open string with the quark and the antiquark at its two ends. Accordingly, we study the lowest-energy states of an open string $q\overline{q}$ system in QCD and QED in 1+1 dimensions. We show that π 0 , η, and η' can be adequately described as open string $q\overline{q}$ QCD mesons. By extrapolating into the $q\overline{q}$ QED sector in which a quark and an antiquark interact with the QED interaction, we find an open string isoscalar I(J π ) = 0(0 - ) QED meson state at 17.9±1.5 MeV and an isovector (I(J π ) = 1(0 - ), I 3 = 0) QED meson state at 36.4±3.8 MeV. The predicted masses of the isoscalar and isovector QED mesons are close to the masses of the hypothetical X17 and E38 particles observed recently, making them good candidates for these particles. The decay products of QED mesons may show up as excess e + e - and γγ pairs in the anomalous soft photon phenomenon associated with hadron productions in high-energy hadron-proton collisions and e + -e - annihilations. Measurements of the invariant masses of excess e + e - and γγ pairs will provide tests for the existence of the open string $q\overline{q}$ QED mesons. An assembly of gravitating QED mesons are expected to emit electron-positron pairs and/or gamma rays and their decay energies and lifetimes will be modified by their gravitational binding energies. Consequently, a self-gravitating isoscalar QED meson assembly whose mass M and radius R satisfy (M/M ⊙ )/(R/R ⊙ ) ≳ 2 4.71 × 10 5 will not produce electron-positron pairs nor gamma rays and may be a good candidate for the primordial dark matter.

Novel method for the identification of the production flavor of neutral charmed mesons

We propose a new algorithm for the identification of the production flavor of neutral D mesons in the Belle II experiment. The algorithm exploits the correlation between the flavor of a reconstructed neutral D meson (signal D meson) and the electric charges of particles reconstructed in the rest of the e + e – →$c\bar{c}$ event. These include those originating from the decay of the other charm hadron produced in the event, as well as those possibly produced in association with the signal D meson. We develop the algorithm using simulation and calibrate it in data using decay modes that identify the flavor of the decaying neutral D meson. We use a data sample of e + e – collisions, corresponding to 362 fb –1 of integrated luminosity, collected by Belle II at center-of-mass energies near the Υ(4S) mass. The effective tagging efficiency in data is (47.91±0.07 (stat) ±0.51 (syst)) %, independent of the neutral-D-meson decay mode. This charm flavor tagger will approximately double the effective sample size of many CP-violation and charm-mixing measurements that so far have exclusively relied on neutral D mesons originating from D* ± decays. While developed for Belle II, the basic principles underlying the charm flavor tagger can be used in other experiments, including those at hadron colliders.

Transverse-momentum and event-shape dependence of D-meson flow harmonics in Pb–Pb collisions at s NN = 5.02 TeV

The elliptic and triangular flow coefficients v 2 and v 3 of prompt D 0 , D + , and D * + mesons were measured at midrapidity ( | y | < 0.8 ) in Pb–Pb collisions at the centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of s NN = 5.02 TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The D mesons were reconstructed via their hadronic decays in the transverse momentum interval 1 < p T < 36 GeV / c in central (0–10%) and semi-central (30–50%) collisions. Compared to pions, protons, and J / ψ mesons, the average D-meson v n harmonics are compatible within uncertainties with a mass hierarchy for p T ≲ 3 GeV / c , and are similar to those of charged pions for higher p T . The coupling of the charm quark to the light quarks in the underlying medium is further investigated with the application of the event-shape engineering (ESE) technique to the D-meson v 2 and p T -differential yields. The D-meson v 2 is correlated with average bulk elliptic flow in both central and semi-central collisions. Within the current precision, the ratios of per-event D-meson yields in the ESE-selected and unbiased samples are found to be compatible with unity. All the measurements are found to be reasonably well described by theoretical calculations including the effects of charm-quark transport and the recombination of charm quarks with light quarks in a hydrodynamically expanding medium.

Measurements of azimuthal anisotropy of nonprompt D 0 mesons in PbPb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

Measurements of the elliptic ($v$ 2 ) and triangular ($v$ 3 ) azimuthal anisotropy coefficients are presented for D 0 mesons produced in b hadron decays (nonprompt D 0 mesons) in lead-lead collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV. The results are compared with previously published charm meson anisotropies measured using prompt D 0 mesons. The data were collected with the CMS detector in 2018 with an integrated luminosity of 0.58 nb –1 . Azimuthal anisotropy is sensitive to the interactions of quarks with the hot and dense medium created in heavy ion collisions. Comparing results for prompt and nonprompt D 0 mesons can assist in understanding the mass dependence of these interactions. The nonprompt results show lower magnitudes of $v$ 2 and $v$ 3 and weaker dependences on the meson transverse momentum and collision centrality than those found for prompt D 0 mesons. The results are in agreement with theoretical predictions that include a mass dependence in the interactions of quarks with the medium

Measurement of beauty and charm production in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 5.02 TeV via non-prompt and prompt D mesons

The pT-differential production cross sections of prompt and non-prompt (produced in beauty-hadron decays) D mesons were measured by the ALICE experiment at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) in proton-proton collisions at s√ = 5.02 TeV. The data sample used in the analysis corresponds to an integrated luminosity of (19.3 ± 0.4) nb -1 . D mesons were reconstructed from their decays D 0 → K - π + , D + → K - π + π + , and D$^+_s$→ φπ + → K - K + π + and their charge conjugates. Compared to previous measurements in the same rapidity region, the cross sections of prompt D + and D$^+_s$ mesons have an extended pT coverage and total uncertainties reduced by a factor ranging from 1.05 to 1.6, depending on pT, allowing for a more precise determination of their pT-integrated cross sections. The results are well described by perturbative QCD calculations. The fragmentation fraction of heavy quarks to strange mesons divided by the one to non-strange mesons, f s /(f u + f d ), is compatible for charm and beauty quarks and with previous measurements at different centre-of-mass energies and collision systems. The $b\bar{b}$ production cross section per rapidity unit at midrapidity, estimated from non-prompt D-meson measurements, is d$σ_{b\bar{b}}$/d$y$| |y|<0.5 = $34.5 ± 2.4(stat)^{+4.7}_{-2.9}$(tot.syst) μb. It is compatible with previous measurements at the same centre-of-mass energy and with the cross section pre- dicted by perturbative QCD calculations.

Associated production of prompt $J/ψ$ and Υ mesons in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

The associated production of prompt J/ψ and Υ mesons in pp collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV is studied using LHCb data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 4 fb -1 . The measurement is performed for J/ψ (Υ) mesons with a transverse momentum p T < 10 (30) GeV/c in the rapidity range 2.0 < y < 4.5. In this kinematic range, the cross-section of the associated production of prompt J/ψ and Υ(1S) mesons is measured to be 133 ± 22 ± 7 ± 3 pb, with a signifcance of 7.9 σ, and that of prompt J/ψ and Υ(2S) mesons to be 76 ± 21 ± 4 ± 7 pb, with a signifcance of 4.9 σ. The frst uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to uncertainties on the used branching fractions. This is the frst observation of the associated production of J/ψ and Υ(1S) in proton-proton collisions. Diferential cross-sections are measured as functions of variables that are sensitive to kinematic correlations between the J/ψ and Υ(1S) mesons. The efective cross-sections of the associated production of prompt J/ψ and Υ mesons are obtained and found to be compatible with measurements using other particle productions.

Spin Alignment of Vector Mesons in Heavy-Ion Collisions

Polarized quarks and antiquarks in high-energy heavy-ion collisions can lead to the spin alignment of vector mesons formed by quark coalescence. Here, using the relativistic spin Boltzmann equation for vector mesons derived from Kadanoff-Baym equations with an effective quark-meson model for strong interaction and quark coalescence model for hadronizaton, we calculate the spin density matrix element $ρ_{00}$ for Φ mesons and show that anisotropies of local field correlations with respect to the spin quantization direction lead to Φ meson's spin alignment. We propose that the local correlation or fluctuation of Φ fields is the dominant mechanism for the observed Φ meson's spin alignment and its strength can be extracted from experimental data as functions of collision energies. The calculated transverse momentum dependence of $ρ_{00}$ agrees with STAR's data. We further predict the azimuthal angle dependence of $ρ_{00}$ which can be tested in future experiments.

Observation of the ϒ ( 3 S ) Meson and Suppression of ϒ States in Pb-Pb Collisions at s N N = 5.02 TeV

The production of ϒ ( 2 S ) and ϒ ( 3 S ) mesons in lead-lead (Pb-Pb) and proton-proton ( p p ) collisions is studied in their dimuon decay channel using the CMS detector at the LHC. The ϒ ( 3 S ) meson is observed for the first time in Pb-Pb collisions, with a significance above 5 standard deviations. The ratios of yields measured in Pb-Pb and p p collisions are reported for both the ϒ ( 2 S ) and ϒ ( 3 S ) mesons, as functions of transverse momentum and Pb-Pb collision centrality. These ratios, when appropriately scaled, are significantly less than unity, indicating a suppression of ϒ yields in Pb-Pb collisions. This suppression increases from peripheral to central Pb-Pb collisions. Furthermore, the suppression is stronger for ϒ ( 3 S ) mesons compared to ϒ ( 2 S ) mesons, extending the pattern of sequential suppression of quarkonium states in nuclear collisions previously seen for the J / ψ , ψ ( 2 S ) , ϒ ( 1 S ) , and ϒ ( 2 S ) mesons. © 2024 CERN, for the CMS Collaboration 2024 CERN

Measurement of 𝜔 meson production in 𝑝⁢𝑝 and 𝑝-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV

We present the measurement of the 𝑝 T -differential production cross section of 𝜔 mesons in pp and 𝑝-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 5.02 TeV at midrapidity by ALICE. In addition, the first measurement of the nuclear modification factor 𝑅 𝑝⁢Pb for 𝜔 mesons at LHC energies is presented, complementing the existing measurements of lighter neutral mesons such as the 𝜋 0 and 𝜂. Within the measured 𝑝 T range, the 𝑅 𝑝⁢Pb of 𝜔 mesons is compatible with no cold nuclear matter effects within the uncertainties, consistent with previous measurements at lower energies. The 𝜔/𝜋 0 ratio is presented for both collision systems, showing no collision system dependence within the uncertainties. The comparison to previously published 𝜔/𝜋 0 ratios at lower and higher collision energies in pp collisions suggests a decreasing trend of the ratio above 𝑝T = 4 GeV/𝑐 with increasing collision energy. The data in both collision systems are compared to predictions from PYTHIA 8, EPOS LHC, and DPMJET event generators, revealing significant shortcomings in these models’ ability to describe the production of 𝜔 mesons.

Measurement of φ-meson production in Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV

The PHENIX experiment reports systematic measurements at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider of φ-meson production in asymmetric Cu + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV and in U + U collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 193 GeV. Measurements were performed via the φ → K + K – decay channel at midrapidity |η| < 0.35. Features of φ- meson production measured in Cu + Cu, Cu + Au, Au + Au, and U + U collisions were found to not depend on the collision geometry, which was expected because the yields are averaged over the azimuthal angle and follow the expected scaling with nuclear-overlap size. The elliptic flow of the φ meson in Cu + Au, Au + Au, and U + U collisions scales with second-order-participant eccentricity and the length scale of the nuclear-overlap region (estimated with the number of participating nucleons). At moderate $p_T$ , φ-meson production measured in Cu + Au and U + U collisions is consistent with coalescence-model predictions, whereas at high $p_T$ the production is in agreement with expectations for in-medium energy loss of parent partons prior to their fragmentation. Finally, the elliptic flow for φ mesons measured in Cu + Au and U + U collisions is well described by a (2+1)-dimensional viscous-hydrodynamic model with specific-shear viscosity η/s = 1/4π.

Measurement of D 0 -meson + hadron two-dimensional angular correlations in Au + Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV

Open heavy flavor hadrons provide unique probes of the medium produced in ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Due to their increased mass relative to light-flavor hadrons, long lifetime, and early production in hard-scattering interactions, they provide access to the full evolution of the partonic medium formed in heavy-ion collisions. This paper reports two-dimensional (2D) angular correlations between neutral D-mesons and unidentified charged particles produced in minimum-bias Au+Au collisions at s N N = 200 GeV. D 0 and D 0 ¯ mesons are reconstructed via their weak decay to K ∓ π ± using the Heavy Flavor Tracker (HFT) in the Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC (STAR) experiment. Correlations on relative pseudorapidity and azimuth (Δη,ΔΦ) are presented for peripheral, mid-central and central collisions with D 0 transverse momentum from 2 to 10 GeV/c. Attention is focused on the 2D peaked correlation structure near the triggered D 0 -meson, the {\em near-side} (NS) peak, which serves as a proxy for a charm-quark containing jet. The correlated NS yield of charged particles per D 0 -meson and the 2D widths of the NS peak increase significantly from peripheral to central collisions. These results are compared with similar correlations using unidentified charged particles, consisting primarily of light-flavor hadrons, at similar trigger particle momenta. Similar per-trigger yields and widths of the NS correlation peak are observed. Here, the present results provide additional evidence that D 0 -mesons undergo significant interactions with the medium formed in heavy-ion collision and show, for the first time, significant centrality evolution of the NS 2D peak in the correlations of particles associated with a heavy-flavor hadron produced in these collisions.

Relativistic spin dynamics for vector mesons

We propose a relativistic theory for spin density matrices of vector mesons based on Kadanoff-Baym equations in the closed-time-path formalism. The theory puts the calculation of spin observables such as the spin density matrix element ρ 00 for vector mesons on a solid ground. Within the theory we formulate ρ 00 for ϕ mesons into a factorization form in separation of momentum and spacetime variables. We argue that the main contribution to ρ 00 at lower energies should be from the ϕ fields that can polarize the strange quark and antiquark in the same way as electromagnetic fields. The key observation is that there is correlation inside the ϕ meson wave function between the ϕ field that polarizes the strange quark and that polarizes the strange antiquark. This is reflected by the fact that the contributions to ρ 00 are all in squares of fields that are nonvanishing even if the fields may strongly fluctuate in spacetime. The fluctuation of strong force fields can be extracted from ρ 00 of unflavored vector mesons as links to fundamental properties of quantum chromodynamics. Electromagnetic and two-photon transition form factors of the pseudoscalar mesons: An algebraic model computation

We compute electromagnetic and two-photon transition form factors of ground-state pseudoscalar mesons: π , K , η c , η b . To this end, we employ an algebraic model based upon the coupled formalism of Schwinger-Dyson and Bethe-Salpeter equations. Within this approach, the dressed quark propagator and the relevant Bethe-Salpeter amplitude encode the internal structure of the corresponding meson. Electromagnetic properties of the meson are probed via the quark-photon interaction. The algebraic model employed by us unifies the treatment of all ground-state pseudoscalar mesons. Its parameters are carefully fitted performing a global analysis of existing experimental data including the knowledge of the charge radii of the mesons studied. We then compute and predict electromagnetic and two-photon transition form factors for a wide range of probing photon momentum-squared which is of direct relevance to the experimental observations carried out thus far or planned at different hadron physics facilities such as the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) and the forthcoming Electron-Ion Collider. We also present comparisons with other theoretical models and approaches and lattice quantum chromodynamics. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Light-front wavefunctions of mesons by design

Abstract We develop a mechanism to build the light-front wavefunctions (LFWFs) of meson bound states on a small-sized basis function representation. Unlike in a standard Hamiltonian formalism, the Hamiltonian in this method is implicit, and the information of the system is carried directly by the functional form and adjustable parameters of the LFWFs. In this work, we model the LFWFs for four charmonium states, $$\eta _c$$ η c , $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ , $$\psi '$$ ψ ′ , and $$\psi (3770)$$ ψ ( 3770 ) as superpositions of orthonormal basis functions. We choose the basis functions as eigenfunctions of an effective Hamiltonian, which has a longitudinal confining potential in addition to the transverse confining potential from light-front holographic QCD. We determine the basis function parameters and superposition coefficients by employing both guidance from the nonrelativistic description of the meson states and the experimental measurements of the meson decay widths. With the obtained wavefunctions, we study the features of those meson states, including charge radii and parton distribution functions. We use the $$J/\psi $$ J / ψ LFWF to calculate the meson production in diffractive deep inelastic scattering and ultra-peripheral heavy-ion collisions, and the $$\eta _c$$ η c LFWF to calculate its diphoton transition form factor. Both results show good agreement with experiments. The obtained LFWFs have simple-functional forms and can be readily used to predict additional experimental observables.

Measurement of non-prompt ${{\textrm{D}}^{0}}$-meson elliptic flow in Pb–Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV

The elliptic flow (v 2 ) of D 0 mesons from beauty-hadron decays (non-prompt D 0 was measured in midcentral (30–50%) Pb–Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair $\sqrt{s_{\textrm{NN}}} = 5.02$ TeV with the ALICE detector at the LHC. The D 0 mesons were reconstructed at midrapidity $(|y|<0.8)$ from their hadronic decay D 0 →$K^-\pi^+$, in the transverse momentum interval $2< p_{\textrm{T}} < 12$ GeV/c. The result indicates a positive v 2 for non-prompt D 0 mesons with a significance of 2.7σ. The non-prompt D 0 -meson v 2 is lower than that of prompt non-strange D mesons with 3.2σ significance in $2< p_\textrm{T} < 8~\textrm{GeV}/c$, and compatible with the v 2 of beauty-decay electrons. Theoretical calculations of beauty-quark transport in a hydrodynamically expanding medium describe the measurement within uncertainties.

Partial Wave Analysis of Strange Mesons Decaying to K+p+p- in the Reaction ¿p ¿ K+p+p-¿(1520) and the Commissioning of the GlueX DIRC Detector

Hadron spectroscopy is a cornerstone of our understanding of the strong nuclear interactions. Studying the hadron spectrum led to the postulation of quarks and gluons, and the development of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), the theory of the strong nuclear force. Today hadron spectroscopy provides an important test of QCD, particularly in the non-perturbative energy regime. One such test is the existence of hybrid hadrons that have gluonic degrees of freedom, e.g. q ?qg states, that are allowed by QCD but have remained elusive in experimental searches. The GlueX experiment located at Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility, is designed to map the light meson spectrum, including hybrid mesons, produced by a linearly polarized photon beam that is scattered off of a liquid hydrogen target. This dissertation concerns the installation and commissioning of the GlueX DIRC upgrade and the analysis of three reactions measured by the GlueX experiment. The GlueX DIRC is a particle identification detector installed as an upgrade to the GlueX experiment in 2019 to improve the experiment?s ability to distinguish pions and kaons. The DIRC uses Cherenkov photons radiated by charged particles that travel faster than the speed of light in the detector medium to determine the velocity of said particles. The velocity measurement is used in conjunction with momentum measurements from other detectors to determine the mass of the particle. The DIRC will be essential to the future of strange meson spectroscopy in GlueX. The reactions ?p ? K+K??+??p, ?p ? K+K??0?0p, ?p ? K+K??0?p were initially chosen for this analysis to search for the hybrid meson candidate ?(2170) and related resonances. The ?(2170) has been observed in e+e? collider experiments decaying to K+K??+?? and K+K??0?0, among other final states. The ?(2170) was not observed in this analysis. The reaction ?p ? K+?+???(1520), a subset of the ?p ? K+K??+??p reaction, was analyzed with a Partial Wave Analysis (PWA) in order to study strange mesons that decay to K+?+??. In the PWA, a useful model for the angular distributions was found but no significant structures could be observed due to statistical limitations.
