Wave ripples formed in ancient, ice-free lakes in Gale crater, Mars

Symmetrical wave ripples identified with NASA’s Curiosity rover in ancient lake deposits at Gale crater provide a key paleoclimate constraint for early Mars: At the time of ripple formation, climate conditions must have supported ice-free liquid water on the surface of Mars. These features are the most definitive examples of wave ripples on another planet. The ripples occur in two stratigraphic intervals within the orbitally defined Layered Sulfate Unit: a thin but laterally extensive unit at the base of the Amapari member of the Mirador formation, and a sandstone lens within the Contigo member of the Mirador formation. In both locations, the ripples have an average wavelength of ~4.5 centimeters. Internal laminae and ripple morphology show an architecture common in wave-influenced environments where wind-generated surface gravity waves mobilize bottom sediment in oscillatory flows. Their presence suggests formation in a shallow-water (<2 meters) setting that was open to the atmosphere, which requires atmospheric conditions that allow stable surface water.

Scatter Removal using Black Body Grids and Determining the Minimum Resolvable Hydrogen Concentration at MARS

This dataset was used to develop and validate a scatter-correction pipeline for neutron radiographs acquired at the MARS beamline, based on the methodology of Carminati et al. (2019). Scatter removal was performed using 36 gadolinium black bodies to characterize and remove the spatially varying neutron scatter field that cannot be eliminated by conventional open-beam normalization. The dataset comprises eight samples - four single-crystal nickel and four polycrystalline austenitic 316L stainless steel. Within each material system, samples were pre-charged with hydrogen gas at four charging pressures (1.5, 5, 12.5, and 20 kpsi). Following scatter correction, the pipeline was applied to all radiographs to recover quantitative attenuation maps. After subtracting the known attenuation contribution of the metal matrix, spatial maps of the hydrogen attenuation coefficient were obtained for each sample. This data was then used to construct a calibration curve relating hydrogen attenuation to hydrogen concentration and to determine the minimum resolvable hydrogen concentration at the MARS beamline. The resulting dataset provides a pressure-resolved calibration standard for quantitative hydrogen mapping using neutron radiography.

Elevated-Mn ChemCam targets illuminating Mn redox cycling and diagenesis in the Bradbury Rise, Gale Crater, Mars

Manganese plays a crucial role as a paleo-environmental and geological indicator due to its sensitivity to redox potential and pH variations in the environment. On Earth, the association between the rise of atmospheric oxygen during the Great Oxidation Event and the presence of Mn in the sedimentary rock record underscores its significance. Here, in this study, we reexamined ChemCam targets from the first 600 sols of the Mars Science Laboratory mission, focusing on identifying instances of above-average Mn within these targets. These elevated-Mn targets were categorized into distinct geologic classes, revealing a pattern linking heightened Mn levels with diagenetically altered materials, such as calcium-sulfate veins and concretions, as well as clay minerals within the same targets, indicating a compelling relationship between Mn enrichment and diagenetic processes. High concentrations of Mn were observed in chemically altered targets, suggesting the occurrence of multiple fluid events: the first to alter the material and the second to deposit Mn. The observed patterns suggest multiple diagenetic events and redox cycling that facilitated the deposition and transport of Mn subsequent to the initial dissolution of basaltic materials. This research sheds light on the complexity of martian diagenetic processes and their implications for the planet’s environmental evolution.

Oscillatory redox behavior in oxides: Cyclic surface reconstruction and reactivity modulation via the Mars–van Krevelen mechanism

The breaking of translational symmetry at oxide surfaces gives rise to coordinatively unsaturated cations/anions and surface restructuring—key factors that govern surface reactivity. Using direct in situ environmental transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations along with atomistic modeling, we report oscillatory redox behavior in CuO under H 2 , where cyclic surface reconstruction and reactivity modulation occur via the Mars–van Krevelen (MvK) mechanism. We observe self-switching between oxygen-rich and oxygen-deficient surface reconstructions, alternately activating and deactivating the surface for H 2 O formation. During periods of chemical inactivity, the oxygen-deficient surface undergoes slow reoxidation via lattice oxygen diffusing from subsurface and bulk reservoirs, restoring the active oxygen-rich surface termination. The inherent disparity in chemical activity among undercoordinated surface ions, along with sluggish subsurface-to-surface oxygen replenishment, drives this oscillatory redox cycle, modulating H2-induced loss of lattice oxygen at the surface and its delayed replenishment from the subsurface. This creates spatiotemporally separated redox steps at the oxide surface. The phenomena and atomistic insights presented here have significant implications for manipulating the surface reactivity of oxides by tuning the separation of these redox steps.

The Role and Lifetime of Dissociative Heterogeneous Processes in Improving Simulated Ozone on Mars

Abstract Ozone simulated in Mars Global Climate Models (MGCMs) is used to assess the underlying chemistry occurring in the atmosphere. Currently, ozone total column abundance (TCA) is under‐predicted in MGCMs by up to 120%, implying missing or inaccurate chemistry in models. Heterogeneous reactions of hydroxyl radicals (HO X ) have been offered as an explanation for some of this bias, because they cause ozone to increase at locations where it's currently under‐predicted. We use four simulations to compare modeled ozone TCA with observations from the UVIS spectrometer aboard the ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter to improve the representation of heterogeneous processes and their impact on ozone. We use a gas‐phase only run, a dissociative scheme, an adsorbed HO X retention scheme, and a hybrid scheme that combines the dissociative mechanism with the retention of HO X on water ice. We find retention of HO X is dependent on water ice sublimation, and ozone abundance increases when water ice persists for longer periods (1–20 sols). Over time, the loss of HO X causes a depletion in H 2 O 2 concentration (HO X reservoir), and thus allows ozone concentration to increase. When adsorbed HO X are desorbed and dissociate into other by‐products, HO X are not immediately available to destroy ozone. This results in larger ozone concentrations than if desorbed HO X are released directly back into their gaseous states. When using the hybrid scheme, ozone TCA is increased up to 50% where the ozone deficit is greatest, demonstrating the best agreement with observations, and implying that HO X radicals are both retained when adsorbed and dissociate.

Corundum Discovered by SuperCam and the Perseverance Rover at Jezero Crater, Mars

Minerals provide clues to the type of geologic environments in which they form. The primary types of minerals that have been identified on Mars indicate a history dominated by volcanism followed by interaction with water. However, other minerals are sometimes found. Here we present results from the SuperCam instrument on the Perseverance rover in which the mineral corundum (α-Al2O3) has been identified using a technique called time-resolved luminescence spectroscopy. Corundum has a unique light-emitting (luminescence) feature based on two well-known peaks as well as the time it takes for this light to fade after being excited by a laser, which is referred to as the lifetime. Corundum forms in specific environments that are enriched in aluminum and depleted in silicon and have been subjected to high temperature and pressure. Such places include deep subsurface magmas or shallower locations that have been exposed to high temperature through tectonic processes or meteorite impacts. Given their small size, association with a mineral called plagioclase, and location on the heavily impacted crater rim, we propose that these corundum minerals formed through impact processes.

Genomic and morphological characterization of Knufia obscura isolated from the Mars 2020 spacecraft assembly facility

Members of the family Trichomeriaceae, belonging to the Chaetothyriales order and the Ascomycota phylum, are known for their capability to inhabit hostile environments characterized by extreme temperatures, oligotrophic conditions, drought, or presence of toxic compounds. The genus Knufia encompasses many polyextremophilic species. In this report, the genomic and morphological features of the strain FJI-L2-BK-P2 presented, which was isolated from the Mars 2020 mission spacecraft assembly facility located at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. The identification is based on sequence alignment for marker genes, multi-locus sequence analysis, and whole genome sequence phylogeny. The morphological features were studied using a diverse range of microscopic techniques (bright field, phase contrast, differential interference contrast and scanning electron microscopy). The phylogenetic marker genes of the strain FJI-L2-BK-P2 exhibited highest similarities with type strain of Knufia obscura (CBS 148926 T ) that was isolated from the gas tank of a car in Italy. To validate the species identity, whole genomes of both strains (FJI-L2-BK-P2 and CBS 148926 T ) were sequenced, annotated, and strain FJI-L2-BK-P2 was confirmed as K. obscura. The morphological analysis and description of the genomic characteristics of K. obscura FJI-L2-BK-P2 may contribute to refining the taxonomy of Knufia species. Key morphological features are reported in this K. obscura strain, resembling microsclerotia and chlamydospore-like propagules. These features known to be characteristic features in black fungi which could potentially facilitate their adaptation to harsh environments.

Design of a Structure for Assembly and Cooling the Magnet of the Next-Generation 45 GHz ECR Ion Source MARS-D

Here, the current Electron Cyclotron Resonance Ion Sources (ECRISs), constructed with Nb-Ti wires and the conventional racetrack-and-solenoid structure, have achieved operating frequencies up to 28 GHz and utilized about 90% of the critical current of the Nb-Ti wire. A Mixed Axial and Radial field System Demonstrator (MARS-D) is being developed at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL). This system, which consists of an innovative hexagonal Closed-Loop Coil (CLC) and a set of solenoids, can generate higher magnetic fields (up to 150% ) while requiring only about 50% of the superconducting wire, enabling Nb-Ti wires to be used in the next-generation 45 GHz ECRIS. However, the assembly and cooling of such an efficient and compact magnet are particularly challenging due to the small radial gap between the CLC and solenoids, as well as the tight operating temperature margin. To address these challenges, a structure was developed that combines a three-section radially split solenoid mandrel with a series of shrink-fit reinforcement rings and cooling channels. This paper presents the detailed structure, manufacturing method, assembly procedure, impregnation method, mechanical Finite Element Analysis (FEA) comparison, and thermal FEA comparison.

The source craters of the martian meteorites: Implications for the igneous evolution of Mars

Approximately 200 meteorites come from ~10 impact events on the surface of Mars, yet their pre-ejection locations are largely unknown. Here, we combine the results of diverse sets of observations and modeling to constrain the source craters for several groups of martian meteorites. We compute that ejection-paired groups of meteorites are derived from lava flows within the top 26 m of the surface. We link ejection-paired groups to specific source craters and geologic units, providing context for these important samples, reconciling microscopic observations with remote sensing records, and demonstrating the potential to constrain the ages of their source geologic units. Furthermore, we show that there are craters that may have produced martian meteorites not represented in the world’s meteorite collections that have yet to be discovered.

MARS-Q modeling of low- n resistive kink-peeling modes and edge harmonic oscillations in DIII-D

Linear and quasilinear magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) modeling is carried out for two DIII-D discharges that both featured a transition from quiescent H-mode (QH) to wide-pedestal QH (WPQH). The MHD perturbations, associated with the edge harmonic oscillations (EHOs) observed during the QH-phase in both discharges, are identified as low-n (n is the toroidal mode number) resistive kink-peeling instabilities, with the ideal MHD counterpart remaining stable. The quasilinear model successfully simulates EHO-like perturbations during the QH phase in both discharges, confirming the experimental observations. A less intuitive finding is the EHO-like behavior involving the n = 2 perturbation, simulated for one of the discharges during the WPQH-phase. This result, while consistent with experimental observations, is obtained despite the fact that the initial perturbation is linearly stable. The eventual growth of the perturbation is solely due to nonlinear interaction between the MHD perturbation and the plasma toroidal flow. The occurrence of the EHO-like perturbation during the WPQH-phase is found to be sensitive to the initial profile of the plasma edge rotation. For DIII-D plasmas considered, the neoclassical toroidal viscosity, generated by three-dimensional low-n perturbations, is found to play a dominant role in modifying the edge flow during EHOs.

Constraining the Hydration of Clay Minerals and Abundances of Amorphous Phases in Gale Crater, Mars

Both water and organic matter are required for the development and persistence of life. Phyllosilicates (clay minerals) have high surface areas that easily sorb water and organic matter. The Curiosity rover has investigated several hundred meters of stratigraphy in Gale crater, including where clays were detected from orbit. Previous results have suggested that subsurface hydration is greatest in units with the most abundant clays, suggesting that these minerals may be hydrated. Organics have also been found throughout Gale crater. Smectites are the most common and abundant phyllosilicates in Gale crater samples and can expand and sorb water and organics in interlayer sites. The most common organic sorption processes on Earth typically involve water or hydroxyl, so hydrated phyllosilicates are good candidates for organic preservation. Using newly derived subsurface hydration results with previously published mineralogy and geochemistry, we derived modeled constraints on the abundances of hydrated amorphous phases, “excess” water, and “excess” cations. These “excess” phases are not accounted for by published crystalline phase abundances or by amorphous phases constrained here. We found correlations between smectites and both “excess” water and “excess” cation abundances, indicating that smectites in Gale crater are hydrated and that cation bridging could be a mechanism for sorption of organics. Our results also show the persistence of amorphous sulfates, opal-A, and volcanic or impact glass, which indicate low water-rock interactions. Increased abundances of sulfates and glass in stratigraphically higher samples may indicate lower water availability and environmental aridification during the time these units were being deposited.
