Quantum-Accurate Multiscale Modeling of Shock Hugoniots, Ramp Compression Paths, Structural and Magnetic Phase Transitions, and Transport Properties in Highly Compressed Metals

Fully characterizing high energy density (HED) phenomena using pulsed power facilities (Z machine) and coherent light sources is possible only with complementary numerical modeling for design, diagnostic development, and data interpretation. The exercise of creating numerical tests, that match experimental conditions, builds critical insight that is crucial for the development of a strong fundamental understanding of the physics behind HED phenomena and for the design of next generation pulsed power facilities. The persistence of electron correlation in HED materials arising from Coulomb interactions and the Pauli exclusion principle is one of the greatest challenges for accurate numerical modeling and has hitherto impeded our ability to model HED phenomena across multiple length and time scales at sufficient accuracy. An exemplar is a ferromagnetic material like iron, while familiar and widely used, we lack a simulation capability to characterize the interplay of structure and magnetic effects that govern material strength, kinetics of phase transitions and other transport properties. Herein we construct and demonstrate the Molecular-Spin Dynamics (MSD) simulation capability for iron from ambient to earth core conditions, all software advances are open source and presently available for broad usage. These methods are multi-scale in nature, direct comparisons between high fidelity density functional theory (DFT) and linear-scaling MSD simulations is done throughout this work, with advancements made to MSD allowing for electronic structure changes being reflected in classical dynamics. Main takeaways for the project include insight into the role of magnetic spins on mechanical properties and thermal conductivity, development of accurate interatomic potentials paired with spin Hamiltonians, and characterization of the high pressure melt boundary that is of critical importance to planetary modeling efforts.

Magnetic phase transitions in Eu(Co 1-x Nix) 2-y As 2 single crystals

The effects of Ni doping in Eu(Co 1-x Ni x ) 2-y As 2 single crystals with x = 0 to 1 grown out of self flux are investigated via crystallographic, electronic transport, magnetic, and thermal measurements. All compositions adopt the body-centered-tetragonal ThCr 2 Si 2 structure with space group I 4= mmm . Here, we also find 3-4% of randomly-distributed vacancies on the Co/Ni site. Anisotropic magnetic susceptibility $\chi$α (α = ab; c) data versus temperature T show clear signatures of an antiferromagnetic (AFM) c-axis helix structure associated with the Eu +2 spins-7/2 for x = 0 and x = 1 as previously reported. The $\chi$α (T) data for x = 0.03 and 0.10 suggest an anomalous 2 q magnetic structure containing two helix axes along the c axis and in the ab plane, respectively, whereas for x = 0.75, 0.82, and 1 a c-axis helix is inferred as previously found for x = 1. At intermediate compositions x = 0:2, 0.32, 0.42, 0.54, and 0.65 a magnetic structure with a large ferromagnetic (FM) c-axis component is found from magnetization versus fi eld isotherms, suggested to be an incommensurate FM cone structure associated with the Eu spins, which consists of both AFM and FM components. In addition, the $\chi$ (T) and heat capacity C p (T) data for x = 0.2-0.65 indicate the occurrence of itinerant FM order associated with the Co/Ni atoms with Curie temperatures from 60 K to 25 K, respectively. Electrical resistivity ρ(T) measurements indicate metallic character for all compositions with abrupt increases in slope on cooling below the Eu AFM transition temperatures. In addition to this panoply of magnetic transitions, 151 Eu Mössbauer measurements indicate that ordering of the Eu moments proceeds via an incommensurate sine amplitude-modulated structure with additional transition temperatures associated with this effect.

Dynamics of a fractal set of first-order magnetic phase transitions in frustrated Lu 2 CoMnO 6

The axial next-nearest-neighbor Ising model predicts a fractal (infinite) set of phases with incommensurate wave vectors that are separated by first-order phase boundaries. This complexity results from a simple frustration condition between nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor interactions along a chain of Ising spins. Using x-ray photon correlation spectroscopy (XPCS), we investigate the surprising antiferromagnetic dynamics that emerge from such a complex phase diagram over a wide range of temperatures. In this work, we present XPCS measurements of the frustrated magnetic chain compound Lu 2 CoMnO 6 and Monte Carlo simulations. Incommensurate magnetic Bragg peaks slide towards commensurate “up-up-down-down” spin order with decreasing temperature and increasing time. Both simulation and experiment support a counterintuitive “upside-down” temperature dependence of the magnetic dynamics: at higher temperatures in the region of first-order phase boundaries, slower dynamics are observed where the speckle maintains its coherence. At the lowest temperatures, where part of the sample adopts commensurate order, the dynamics speed up and result in fast decoherence.

Magnetic phase transitions in quantum spin-orbital liquids

Here, we investigate the spin and orbital correlations of a superexchange model with spin $\textit{S}$ = 1 and orbital $\textit{L}$ = 1 relevant for $5d^4$ transition-metal Mott insulators, using exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG). For spin-orbit coupling λ = 0, the orbitals are in an entangled state that is decoupled from the spins. We find two phases with increasing λ: (I) the $\textit{S}$2 phase with two peaks in the structure factor for λ ≤ λ$_{c1}$ ≈ 0.34$\textit{J}$ where $\textit{J}$ is the ferromagnetic exchange; and, (II) the $\textit{S}$1 phase for λ$_{c1}$ < λ ≤ λ$_{c2}$ ≈ 1.2$\textit{J}$ with emergent antiferromagnetic correlations. Both $\textit{S}$1 and $\textit{S}$2 phases are shown to exhibit power-law correlations, indicative of a gapless spectrum. Upon increasing λ > λ$_{c2}$ leads to a product state of local spin-orbital singlets that exhibit exponential decay of correlations, indicative of a gapped phase. We obtain insights into the phases from the well-known Uimin-Lai-Sutherland model in an external field that provides an approximate description of our model within mean-field theory.

Synthesis and electronic properties of Nd n +1 NinO 3 n +1 Ruddlesden-Popper nickelate thin films

The rare-earth nickelates possess a diverse set of collective phenomena including metal-to-insulator transitions, magnetic phase transitions, and, upon chemical reduction, superconductivity. In this work, we demonstrate epitaxial stabilization of layered nickelates in the Ruddlesden-Popper form, Nd n +1 NinO 3 n +1 , using molecular beam epitaxy. By optimizing the stoichiometry of the parent perovskite NdNiO 3 , we can reproducibly synthesize the n = 1–5 member compounds. X-ray absorption spectroscopy at the O K and Ni L edges indicate systematic changes in both the nickel-oxygen hybridization level and nominal nickel filling from 3$d^8$ to 3$d^7$ as we move across the series from n = 1 to n = ∞. The n = 3 – 5 compounds exhibit weakly hysteretic metal-to-insulator transitions with transition temperatures that depress with increasing order toward NdNiO 3 ( n = ∞).

Unexpected magnetic phase in the weakly ordered spin- 1 2 chain cuprate Sr 2 CuO 3

The magnetic phase diagram of a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chain antiferromagnet Sr 2 CuO 3 is studied by an ultrasound phase-sensitive detection technique. The system is in the extreme proximity of the Luttinger-liquid quantum-critical point and we observe an unusually strong effect of magnetic field, which is very weak compared to the in-chain interaction, on the Néel ordering temperature. Inside the ordered phase, we detect an unexpected, field-induced continuous phase transition. The transition is accompanied by softening of magnetic excitation observed by electron-spin resonance, which in previous work [E. G. Sergeicheva et al., Phys. Rev. B 95, 020411(R) (2017)] was associated with a longitudinal (amplitude) mode of the order parameter. These results suggest a transition from a transverse collinear antiferromagnet to an amplitude-modulated spin-density-wave phase in a very weak magnetic field, which is unexpected for a system of weakly coupled Heisenberg spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chains.

Sawtooth lattice multiferroic BeCr 2 O 4 : Noncollinear magnetic structure and multiple magnetic transitions

Noncollinear magnetic structures and multiple magnetic phase transitions in a sawtooth lattice antiferromagnet consisting of Cr 3+ are experimentally identified in this work, thereby proposing the scenario of magnetism-driven ferroelectricity in a sawtooth lattice. The title compound, BeCr 2 O 4 , displays three magnetic phase transitions at low temperatures—at T N1 ≈ 7.5 K, at T N2 ≈ 25 K, and at T N3 ≈ 26 K—revealed through magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, and neutron diffraction in this work. These magnetic phase transitions are found to be influenced by externally applied magnetic fields. Isothermal magnetization curves at low temperatures below the magnetic transitions indicate the antiferromagnetic nature of BeCr 2 O 4 with two spin-flop-like transitions occurring at H c1 ≈ 29 kOe and H c2 ≈ 47 kOe. Our high-resolution x-ray and neutron diffraction studies, performed on single crystal and powder samples, unambiguously determined the crystal structure as orthorhombic Pbnm. By performing the magnetic superspace group analysis of the neutron diffraction data at low temperatures, the magnetic structure in the temperature range T N3,N2 < T < T N1 is determined to be the polar magnetic space group P21nm. 1' (00g) 0s0s with a cycloidal magnetic propagation vector k 1 = (0, 0, 0.090 (1)) . The magnetic structure in the newly identified phase below T N1 is determined as P21/b.1' [b] (00 g) 00s with the magnetic propagation vector k 2 = (0, 0, 0.908 (1)). Finally, the cycloidal spin structure determined in our work is usually associated with electric polarization, thereby making BeCr 2 O 4 a promising multiferroic belonging to the sparsely populated family of sawtooth lattice antiferromagnets.

Hydrostatic pressure effect on the Co-based honeycomb magnet BaCo 2 (AsO 4 ) 2

Here the honeycomb antiferromagnet BaCo 2 (AsO 4 ) 2 , in which small in-plane magnetic fields (H1 ≈ 0.26T and H2 ≈ 0.52T at T = 1.8 K < T N ≈ 5.4K) induce two magnetic phase transitions, has attracted attention as a possible candidate material for the realization of Kitaev physics based on the 3d element Co 2+ . Here, we report on the change in the transition temperature T N and the critical fields H1 and H2 of BaCo 2 (AsO 4 ) 2 with hydrostatic pressure up to ~20 kbar, as determined from magnetization and specific heat measurements. Within this pressure range, a marginal increase in the magnetic ordering temperature is observed. At the same time, the critical fields are changed significantly (up to ~25 –35%). Specifically, we find that H1 is increased with hydrostatic pressure, i.e., the antiferromagnetic state is stabilized, whereas H2, which was previously associated with a transition into a proposed Kitaev spin-liquid state, decreases with increasing pressure. We discuss to what extent these results are compatible with suggested models with sizable third-nearest-neighbor exchange. Overall, the results put constraints on the magnetic models that are used to describe the low-temperature magnetic properties of BaCo 2 (AsO 4 ) 2 .

Discretized evolution of solitons in the achiral stripe phase of a Fe/Gd thin film

Understanding magnetic phase transitions from stripe to skyrmion textures provide fundamental scientific insights into the details of the intermediate topologies through which the system evolves. The solitonic nature of spin texture in both stripe and skyrmion phases has been observed in materials with Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. In this study we show that the field evolution in a dipolar interaction mediated Fe/Gd multilayer that exhibits achiral stripe textures behaves similar to a finite-sized chiral soliton lattice. As a function of magnetic field, the stripes exhibit discrete jumps in periodicity indicative of intermediate topologies as the stripes get wound into skyrmions.

Anomalous symmetry breaking in the Weyl semimetal CeAlGe

CeAlGe, a proposed type-II Weyl semimetal, orders antiferromagnetically below 5 K. At 2 K, spin-flop and spin-flip transitions to less than 1 μ B /Ce are observed in the M ⁡(H) data below 30 kOe, H∥a and b, and 4.3 kOe, H∥ $\langle$110$\rangle$, respectively, indicating a fourfold symmetry of the M ⁡(H) data along the principal directions in the tetragonal ab plane with $\langle$110$\rangle$ set of easy directions. However, anomalously robust and complex twofold symmetry is observed in the angular dependence of resistivity and magnetic torque data in the magnetically ordered state once the field is swept in the ab plane. This twofold symmetry is independent of temperature and field hystereses and suggests a magnetic phase transition that separates two different magnetic structures in the ab plane. Further, the boundary of this magnetic phase transition and possibly the type of low-field magnetic structure can be tuned by an Al deficiency.

Microscopic Phase Diagram of Eu(Fe 1-x Ni x )As 2 ( x = 0,0.04) Under Pressure

This study will go to establish the microscopic P-T phase diagram of recent 112-type iron-pnictides Eu(Fe 1-x Ni x )As- 2 (x = 0,0.04), high-pressure synchrotron Mossbauer spectroscopy experiments in 151 Eu and 57 Fe have been performed. In EuFeAs 2 application of pressure completely suppresses the itinerant electron magnetism from the Fe sublattice and the local-moment magnetism in Eu ions at similar to ~10 and similar to ~11.6 GPa, respectively. High-pressure x-ray diffraction experiments in EuFeAs 2 reveal an anomalous change in the lattice parameters and a discontinuity in volume around 10 GPa, suggesting an isostructural transition at this pressure. With Ni-doping (x = 0.04), a collapse of local magnetic order occurs at similar to ~8GPa, a lower critical pressure compared with the parent compound. In both systems, the suppression of local-moment magnetism is associated with a significant increase of mean valence in Eu ions.
