High-dynamic GPS tracking

The results of comparing four different frequency estimation schemes in the presence of high dynamics and low carrier-to-noise ratios are given. The comparison is based on measured data from a hardware demonstration. The tested algorithms include a digital phase-locked loop, a cross-product automatic frequency tracking loop, and extended Kalman filter, and finally, a fast Fourier transformation-aided cross-product frequency tracking loop. The tracking algorithms are compared on their frequency error performance and their ability to maintain lock during severe maneuvers at various carrier-to-noise ratios. The measured results are shown to agree with simulation results carried out and reported previously.

Flight test of a trajectory controller using linearizing transformations with measurement feedback

The design of nonlinear controllers has relied on the use of detailed aerodynamic and engine models that must be associated with the control law in the flight system implementation. Many of these controllers have been applied to vehicle flightpath control problems and have attempted to combine both inner- and outer-loop control functions in a single controller. This paper presents an alternate approach to the design of outer-loop controllers. The approach simplifies the outer-loop design problem by separating the inner-loop (stabilization and control) from the outer-loop (guidance and navigation) functions. Linearizing transformations are applied using measurement feedback to eliminate the need for detailed aircraft models in outer-loop control applications. Also discussed is an implementation of the controller. This implementation was tested on a six-degree-of-freedom F-15 simulation and in flight on an F-15 aircraft. Proof of the concept is provided by flight test data which is presented and discussed.

High frequency, small signal MH loops of ferromagnetic thin films

A method is presented for transforming the high frequency bias susceptibility measurements of ferromagnetic thin films into the form of a MH loop with, depending upon the measurement geometry, the y-axis zero crossing giving a measure of the coercive force or anisotropy field. The loops provide a measure of the quantitative and qualitative high frequency switching properties of ferromagnetic thin films. c2000 American Institute of Physics.

Mass flow meter using the triboelectric effect for measurement in cryogenics

The use of triboelectric charge to measure the mass flow rate of cryogens for the Space Shuttle Main Engine was investigated. Cross correlation of the triboelectric charge signals was used to determine the transit time of the cryogen between two sensor locations in a .75-in tube. The ring electrode sensors were mounted in a removable spool piece. Three spool pieces were constructed for delivery, each with a different design. One set of electronics for implementation of the cross correlation and flow calculation was constructed for delivery. Tests were made using a laboratory flow loop using liquid freon and transformer oil. The measured flow precision was 1 percent and the response was linear. The natural frequency distribution of the triboelectric signal was approximately 1/f. The sensor electrodes should have an axial length less than approximately one/tenth pipe diameter. The electrode spacing should be less than approximately one pipe diameter. Tests using liquid nitrogen demonstrated poor tribo-signal to noise ratio. Most of the noise was microphonic and common to both electrode systems. The common noise rejection facility of the correlator was successful in compensating for this noise but the signal was too small to enable reliable demonstration of the technique in liquid nitrogen.

Transform methods for precision continuum and control models of flexible space structures

An open loop optimal control algorithm is developed for general flexible structures, based on Laplace transform methods. A distributed parameter model of the structure is first presented, followed by a derivation of the optimal control algorithm. The control inputs are expressed in terms of their Fourier series expansions, so that a numerical solution can be easily obtained. The algorithm deals directly with the transcendental transfer functions from control inputs to outputs of interest, and structural deformation penalties, as well as penalties on control effort, are included in the formulation. The algorithm is applied to several structures of increasing complexity to show its generality.

Dynamic analysis of a class of mixed lumped-distributed parameter systems via numerical techniques

The modeling via transfer matrices of mixed lumped-distributed parameter systems with feedback control is discussed and novel methods of obtaining information on the controlled system's dynamic response via numerical methods is presented. These methods utilize numerical searches in the complex plane for the roots of the transcendental characteristic equation to determine the closed loop system eigenvalues. The fast Fourier transform (FFT) algorithm is utilized but in the inverse fashion (from frequency domain to time domain). The information obtained is identical to that contained in a model in modal coordinates, and can be used to construct such a model. An interactive computer program to do the required calculation is described, as well as its application to a manipulator arm design problem.

Closed-Loop Process Yields Ultrapure Silicon

Metallurgical-grade silicon transforms into tribromosilane by reacting it with process byproducts. Tribromosilane is separated from mixture, purified, and finally decomposed in presence of hydrogen in silicon-product reactor. Conversion efficiencies of 30 to greater than 60 percent of tribromosilane to ultrapure granular polycrystalline silicon are typical in produce reactor.

Hybrid vision activities at NASA Johnson Space Center

NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas, is active in several aspects of hybrid image processing. (The term hybrid image processing refers to a system that combines digital and photonic processing). The major thrusts are autonomous space operations such as planetary landing, servicing, and rendezvous and docking. By processing images in non-Cartesian geometries to achieve shift invariance to canonical distortions, researchers use certain aspects of the human visual system for machine vision. That technology flow is bidirectional; researchers are investigating the possible utility of video-rate coordinate transformations for human low-vision patients. Man-in-the-loop teleoperations are also supported by the use of video-rate image-coordinate transformations, as researchers plan to use bandwidth compression tailored to the varying spatial acuity of the human operator. Technological elements being developed in the program include upgraded spatial light modulators, real-time coordinate transformations in video imagery, synthetic filters that robustly allow estimation of object pose parameters, convolutionally blurred filters that have continuously selectable invariance to such image changes as magnification and rotation, and optimization of optical correlation done with spatial light modulators that have limited range and couple both phase and amplitude in their response.

Long range geoid control through the European GPS traverse: Final results

The European north-south Global Positioning System (GPS)-traverse proposed by IAG SSG 3.88, should control and improve the European geoid. This traverse follows first order leveling lines, included in the United European Leveling Network. From May to August 1986 and in July 1987, the central and northern part of this traverse (approx. 3000 km) was observed using up to four TI 4100 receivers, covering Austria, Federal Republic of Germany, Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Both traverse parts contain 71 stations with distances of about 50 km. In addition, 8 stations have been occupied for overlapping connections, and traverse links were established for connecting the fundamental stations Wettzell (VLBI and SLR) and Onsala (VLBI). Final results show a GPS observation precision of a few cm for loops of some 100 km circumference. After transformation of the GPS results to geoid heights using the leveled heights, comparisons with different existing gravimetric geoid determinations including geopotential models were performed. In addition, new geopotential models complete to degree and order 360 tailored to gravity data in Europe, and gravimetric geoid solutions using 6 x 10' mean gravity anomalies were investigated. The comparison with GPS and leveling yields rms discrepancies of + or - 0.1...0.2 m over 1000 km traverse sections for the best solutions, but a strong slope is existing in Sweden and southern Norway in almost all solutions, which is probably caused by systematic errors in the available gravity data for Scandinavia. This is confirmed by a new geoid computation at the Danish Geodetic Institute where the slope has disappeared. If this new solution is taken for the northern traverse section and the best solution for the central part, the rms discrepancy reduces to approximately + or - 0.2 m over 3000 km. Thus, a + or - 10 (exp 7) relative height accuracy seems to be achievable over long distances with the GPS/leveling and the gravimetric geoid calculation techniques, applied in this experiment.

A time domain inverse dynamic method for the end point tracking control of a flexible manipulator

The inverse dynamic equation of a flexible manipulator was solved in the time domain. By dividing the inverse system equation into the causal part and the anticausal part, we calculated the torque and the trajectories of all state variables for a given end point trajectory. The interpretation of this method in the frequency domain was explained in detail using the two-sided Laplace transform and the convolution integral. The open loop control of the inverse dynamic method shows an excellent result in simulation. For real applications, a practical control strategy is proposed by adding a feedback tracking control loop to the inverse dynamic feedforward control, and its good experimental performance is presented.

Uniform sampling analysis of a hybrid phase-locked loop with a sample-and-hold phase detector

Phase-locked-loop (PLL) bit synchronizers often employ integrate-and-dump type phase detectors that provide phase error information only at discrete points in time. Usually these phase detectors are followed by sample-and-hold circuits to produce a stairstep error voltage as the input to a standard analog circuit loop filter. When the loop is configured in this manner, it is referred to as a hybrid PLL. Sampled-data analysis methods (Z transforms) are used to determine the stability and transient response of this loop.

Regulated dc-to-dc converter for voltage step-up or step-down with input-output isolation.

A dc-to-dc regulated-converter circuit employing duty-cycle control with variable on and variable off time has been presented. A unique feature of this converter is the method by which the bistable-comparator output controls the duty cycle of the power switching transistor through the action of the encoder. The utilization of minor-loop flux excursions of a saturable-core transformer in the encoder makes it feasible to extend the converter switching frequency considerably higher than would normally be possible. With this converter circuit, high and very-high frequency converter operations were explored.

Implicit model following and parameter identification of unstable aircraft

A transformation in the s-plane is described which has utility in implicit model-following optimal control design application and in estimation or parameter identification problems. The objective of the transformation is, for the control problem, to achieve an unstable closed-loop system, and, for the estimation problem, to alleviate algorithm convergence problems that may arise in identifying unstable systems. For the control problem, the transformation is a shift along the real (sigma) axis of the plant and model poles and zeros. This transformation is shown to be equivalent to a modified performance index but offers the advantage of compatibility with existing optimal control solution algorithms. For the estimation problem, the data are multiplied by an exponential function and the assumed measurement and process noise covariances are appropriately modified. Examples of both control and estimation applications are presented.
