Mercury - Wavelength and longitude dependence of polarization

The polarization-time variations noted in the present linear polarization observations of the integrated Mercury disk, with filters covering the 0.3-1.0 micron bandpass and between 53-130 deg of phase angle, may be accounted for in terms of longitude dependence through the variation of brightness or other properties over the surface. Kepler's equation for the eccentric anomaly was solved for each observation, and the true anomaly was used to find the subsolar longitude. The difference found in the polarization-albedo relations of Mercury and the moon indicates a difference in surface texture and/or composition.

The longitude dependence of the dayside F region trough - A detailed model-observation comparison

The nighttime main F-region trough extends into the sunlit afternoon sector. This trough feature exhibits both a strong magnetic-activity dependence and a longitude (UT) dependence. Whalen (1987), using IGY ionosonde data, showed that both of these effects are readly extracted from f0F2 observations. This study shows that the longitude effect is the same as that contained in the Utah State University time-dependent ionospheric model. It arises from the offset of the geomagnetic axis from the geographic axis. The magnetic-activity dependency is associated with the westward convection in the afternoon sector. It is also contained in the ionospheric model via the empirical magnetospheric convection model.

Long-term behaviour of starspots. III - Active longitudes on the long-period RS CVn star HK Lacertae

Thirteen years of photometry were used to study active longitudes on the surface of HK Lacertae. The decaying and forming phenomena of active areas in the years of 1980-1981, 1983-1984, and 1988-1989 are shown. New activity centers suddenly occur near the same orbital phase (0.6) and have lifetimes of several (greater than 6) years. The average rotational period of HK Lac is 24.2852 d; compared to the orbital period of 24.4284 d, this implies a 32 degree/year drift of the active areas on the stellar surface. Two possible interpretations for the period difference are discussed: pseudosynchronism and rigidity of magnetic patterns. The active longitudes on HK Lac are compared with similar phenomena found on the sun.

How the effects of winds and electric fields in F2-layer storms vary with latitude and longitude - A theoretical study

The effects of thermospheric winds and electric fields on the ionospheric F2-layer are controlled by the geometry of the magnetic field, and so vary with latitude and longitude. A simple model of the daytime F2-layer is adopted and the effects at midlatitudes (25-65 deg geographic) of three processes that accompany geomagnetic storms: (1) thermospheric changes due to auroral heating; (2) equatorward winds that tend to cancel the quiet-day poleward winds; and (3) the penetration of magnetospheric electric fields are studied. At +/- 65 deg, the effects of heating and electric fields are strongest in the longitudes toward which the geomagnetic dipole is tilted, i.e., the North American and the South Indian Ocean sectors. Because of the proximity of the geomagnetic equator to the East Asian and South American sectors, the reverse is true at +/- 25 deg.

Trends in column ozone based on TOMS data - Dependence on month, latitude, and longitude

On the basis of the TOMS satellite column ozone data in latitudes 70 deg S-70 deg N from November 1978 to May 1990, a statistical model is used to estimate the trends in ozone as a function of latitude, longitude, and month. The trends in the TOMS ozone data are highly seasonal and dependent on location. Near the equator, the estimated monthly trends are not significantly different from zero. For high latitudes, most of the estimated monthly trends are negative. In January, February, and March, there are some positive trend estimates in the western hemisphere around latitude 60 deg N. The most negative trends for these three months also appear in the high latitudes of the northern hemisphere. Starting in June, more negative trends appear in the latitudes 50 deg S-70 deg S than the trends in the rest of the world considered. A large depletion develops during the spring time (September to November) in the southern high-latitude region, and the area of peak ozone decline is moving eastward during the period. The largest negative trends (about -29 percent per decade) for the area considered in this study appear in October around the latitude 70 deg S and longitudes 20 deg W-100 deg W region. For the northern hemisphere, the year-round trend estimates for latitudes 30 deg N-70 deg N range from -0.96 percent to -7.43 percent per decade. In the latitudes 30 deg N-50 deg N, the winter trend estimates are more negative than those for the summer and the fall. However, this pattern did not hold for latitudes 50 deg N-70 deg N.

Clementine High Resolution Camera Mosaicking Project: CL 6014; 0 deg N to 80 deg N Latitude, 270 deg E to 300 deg E Longitude - Volume 14

This compact disk (CD) is part of the Malin Space Science Systems (MSSS) effort to mosaic Clementine I high resolution (HiRes) camera lunar images. These mosaics were developed through calibration and semi-automated registration against the recently released geometrically and photometrically controlled Ultraviolet/Visible (UV/Vis) Basemap Mosaic, which is available through the PDS, as CD-ROM volumes CL_3001-3015. The HiRes mosaics are compiled from non-uniformity corrected, 750 nanometer ("D") filter high resolution observations from the HiRes imaging system onboard the Clementine Spacecraft. These mosaics are spatially warped using the sinusoidal equal-area projection at a scale of 20 m/pixel. The geometric control is provided by the 100 m/pixel U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Clementine Basemap Mosaic compiled from the 750 nm Ultraviolet/Visible Clementine imaging system. Calibration was achieved by removing the image nonuniformity largely caused by the HiRes system's light intensifier. Also provided are offset and scale factors, achieved by a fit of the HiRes data to the corresponding photometrically calibrated UV/Vis basemap that approximately transform the 8-bit HiRes data to photometric units. The mosaics on this CD were compiled from sub-polar data (latitudes 80 degrees South to 80 degrees North; -80 to +80) within the longitude range 0-30 deg E. The mosaics are divided into tiles that cover approximately 1.75 degrees of latitude and span the longitude range of the mosaicked frames. Images from a given orbit are map projected using the orbit's nominal central latitude. This CD contains ancillary data files that support the HiRes mosaic. These files include browse images with UV/Vis context stored in a Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) format, index files ('imgindx.tab' and 'srcindx.tab') that tabulate the contents of the CD, and documentation files. For more information on the contents and organization of the CD volume set refer to the "FILES, DIRECTORIES AND DISK CONTENTS" section of this document. The image files are organized according to NASA's Planetary Data System (PDS) standards. An image file (tile) is organized as a PDS labeled file containing an "image object".
