Linear and Non-linear Optical Characterization of Glass and Sapphire for Optical Instrumentation of Advanced Fission Reactors

The linear and nonlinear optical properties of glass and sapphire are investigated to determine the material’s suitability to support optical instrumentation for advanced fission reactors. A post-irradiation examination experiment consisting of a Z-scan, measuring nonlinear optical absorption and refraction, and a spectrometer, measuring linear optical absorption was developed and used. Radiation-induced negative nonlinear optical absorption was observed for the first time in fused silica, sapphire, and borosilicate glass under both types of thermal annealing conditions and the respective effects of thermal annealing are reported.

Topology of the $O(3)$ non-linear sigma model under the gradient flow

The $O(3)$ non-linear sigma model (NLSM) is a prototypical field theory for QCD and ferromagnetism, featuring topological qualities. Though the topological susceptibility should vanish in physical theories, lattice simulations of the NLSM find that the topological susceptibility diverges in the continuum limit. We introduce a $\theta$-term and analyze the topological charge as a function of $\theta$ under the gradient flow. Our results show that divergence persists in the presence of the flow, even at non-zero $\theta$.

The Linear Collider Facility (LCF) at CERN

In this paper we outline a proposal for a Linear Collider Facility as the next flagship project for CERN. It offers the opportunity for a timely, cost-effective and staged construction of a new collider that will be able to comprehensively map the Higgs boson's properties, including the Higgs field potential, thanks to a large span in centre-of-mass energies and polarised beams. A comprehensive programme to study the Higgs boson and its closest relatives with high precision requires data at centre-of-mass energies from the Z pole to at least 1 TeV. It should include measurements of the Higgs boson in both major production mechanisms, ee -> ZH and ee -> vvH, precision measurements of gauge boson interactions as well as of the W boson, Higgs boson and top-quark masses, measurement of the top-quark Yukawa coupling through ee ->ttH, measurement of the Higgs boson self-coupling through HH production, and precision measurements of the electroweak couplings of the top quark. In addition, ee collisions offer discovery potential for new particles complementary to HL-LHC.

Deterministic Linear Time for Maximal Poisson‐Disk Sampling using Chocks without Rejection or Approximation

Abstract We show how to sample uniformly within the three‐sided region bounded by a circle, a radial ray, and a tangent, called a “chock.” By dividing a 2D planar rectangle into a background grid, and subtracting Poisson disks from grid squares, we are able to represent the available region for samples exactly using triangles and chocks. Uniform random samples are generated from chock areas precisely without rejection sampling. This provides the first implemented algorithm for precise maximal Poisson‐disk sampling in deterministic linear time. We prove O(n · M(b) log b), where n is the number of samples, b is the bits of numerical precision and M is the cost of multiplication. Prior methods have higher time complexity, take expected time, are non‐maximal, and/or are not Poisson‐disk distributions in the most precise mathematical sense. We fill this theoretical lacuna.

Starting dynamics of a linear-cavity femtosecond Mamyshev oscillator

Mamyshev oscillators can generate high-power femtosecond pulses, but starting a mode-locked state has remained a major challenge due to the suppression of continuous-wave lasing. Here, we study the starting dynamics of a linear Mamyshev oscillator designed to generate high-power femtosecond pulses while avoiding component damage. Reliable starting to stable mode-locking is achieved with a combination of modulation of the pump power and shifting of a filter passband. The starting process is automated, with full electronic control. The laser delivers 21-nJ pulses that are dechirped to 65 fs in duration outside the cavity.

A systematic analysis of phase stability in refractory high entropy alloys utilizing linear and non-linear cluster expansion models

We report that obtaining surrogate models for various types of materials has long been a goal of computational material scientists and physicists, as they allow the calculation of thermodynamic quantities and properties of interest far more efficiently than DFT. Many surrogate models, including interatomic potentials generated by machine learning algorthims and cluster expansions, rely on incorporating many-body interactions such as three-body or four-body interactions. When utilizing machine learning algorithms for interatomic potentials, it is common to start with two-body interactions and systematically include three- and four-body clusters to improve the fit, stopping when including the additional clusters does not measurably change the predictive power of the model. In cluster expansions for FCC and related lattices, it is often enough to include mostly two-body interactions and a handful of three-body interactions. However, it remains to be seen whether those will be enough in the case of lattices with a lower packing fraction, such as BCC.

The science case for an intermediate energy advanced and novel accelerator linear collider facility

It is widely accepted that the next lepton collider beyond a Higgs factory would require center-of-mass energy of the order of up to 15 TeV. Since, given reasonable space and cost restrictions, conventional accelerator technology reaches its limits near this energy, high-gradient advanced acceleration concepts are attractive. Advanced and novel accelerators (ANAs) are leading candidates due to their ability to produce acceleration gradients on the order of 1–100 GV/m, leading to compact acceleration facilities. However, intermediate energy facilities (IEF) are required to test the critical technology elements on the way towards multi-TeV-class colliders. Here a science case for a 20–100 GeV center-of-mass energy ANA-based lepton collider that can be a candidate for an intermediate energy facility is presented. The IEF can provide numerous opportunities for high energy physics studies including precision Quantum Chromodynamics and Beyond the Standard Model physics measurements, investigation of charged particle interactions with extreme electromagnetic fields, and exploring muon and proton beam acceleration. Possible applications of this collider include the studies of γγ and electron beam-fixed target/beamdump collider designs. Thus, the goal of the proposed IEF is to both carry out particle physics measurements in the 20-100 GeV ranges as well as to serve as an ANA demonstrator facility.

Linear Viscoelastic Properties of Putative Cyclic Polymers Synthesized by Reversible Radical Recombination Polymerization (R3P)

Linear viscoelastic properties in both melt and solution states are reported for a series of poly(3,6-dioxa-1,8-octanedithiol) (polyDODT) made by reversible radical recombination polymerization (R 3 P) under conditions designed to produce linear (LDODT), cyclic (RDODT) and linear-cyclic mixtures (LRDODT). PolyDODT is amorphous (T g < -50 °C) and highly flexible (entanglement molecular weight M e,lin ≈ 1850 g/mol for LDODT). PolyDODT’s low T g and low M e,lin enable characterization over a wide dynamic range and a wide range of dimensionless weight-average molecular weight Z w = M w /M e,lin . Measurements at temperatures from -57 °C to 100 °C provide up to 18 deades of reduced frequency, which is necessary to characterize RDODT melts with Z w from 23 to 300. The two highest molecular weight polymers in the present RDODT series have such high M w (406k and 556k g/mol) that mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and even chemical assays for chain ends are unable to rule out up to 2 mol% linear contaminant. By studying the samples in solution (using dilution to reduce Z w ) we could compare their dynamics with those of previously established high-purity polystyrene (PS) rings (limited to Z w ≤ 13.6). RDODT solutions with Z w < 15 (concentrations <5wt% for RDODT-406k and 556k) have dynamic moduli G^* that accord with LCCC-purified PS rings in terms of the frequency dependence (including the absence of a plateau), the progression of shapes of G* as a function of Z w , and the linear scaling of their zero-shear viscosity η0 with M w . The shape of G* as a function of Z w for solutions of RDODT-406k and -556k also accord with lower M w RDODT melts (which have ≤ 1.3mol% linear contaminant). Thus, measurement of the linear viscoelastic properties of appropriate concentrations of high M w (>200k g/mol) putative cyclic polymers, in which linear chains evade spectroscopic detection, may provide an alternative means (though not fully proven) of validation of sample purity. When Z w > 15 (including all seven RDODT melts and eight of their solutions), G* has a rubbery plateau. This suggests that the onset of entanglement-like behavior in rings requires 4-5-fold greater Z w than is required for linear chains. Further, the plateau moduli of RDODT samples are indistinguishable from G N o of the corresponding LDODT (melt or matched-concentration solutions). In entangled linear polymers, the observation that G N o is independent of Z w follows from limitations on lateral fluctuations due to neighboring chains becoming independent of position along a given chain. The present results for RDODT suggest that this holds for sufficiently long endless chains, too. While the RDODT have the same G N o as entangled LDODT, when Z w > 60 the terminal relaxation, if reached at all, of RDODT extends to orders of magnitude lower frequency than an entangled linear polymer of the same Z w . Consequently, the viscosity of RDODT with Z w > 60 increases with Z w much more strongly than the 3.4-power observed for entangled linear polymers. Lastly, these novel polymers, with disulfide-linked backbone and broad relaxation time distribution may prove important in relation to biodegradable elastomers and materials with exceptional low-frequency dissipation, extending at least 12 decades below the onset of the rubbery plateau.
