Multichannel optical correlator/convolver utilizing the magnetooptic spatial light modulator

The paper describes a multichannel correlator/convolver architecture utilizing an acoustooptic light modulator for the one dimensional channel and a magnetooptic spatial light modulator (MOSLM) for the second two-dimensional parallel channel. The MOSLM allows greater parallelism to be implemented in this correlator/convolver design than was previously reported. The implementation of 24 parallel channels with a 48 x 48 device is demonstrated. Experimental data are presented and the ways of increasing the number of parallel channels using commercially available MOSLMs and other previously discussed techniques, such as frequency multiplexing, are discussed. It is shown that over 2000 parallel channels are possible at 32-bit accuracy. A technique for obtaining a limited gray scale is also discussed.

Gray scale operation of a multichannel optical convolver using the Semetex magnetooptic spatial light modulator

A new multichannel optical correlator/convolver architecture which uses an acoustooptic light modulator for the input channel and a Semetex magnetooptic spatial light modulator (MOSLM) for the set of parallel reference channels is presented. Details of the anamorphic optical system are discussed. Experimental results illustrate the use of the system as a convolver for performing digital multiplication by analog convolution (DMAC). A limited gray scale capability for data stored by the MOSLM is demonstrated by implementing this DMAC algorithm with trinary logic. Use of the MOSLM allows the number of parallel channels for the convolver to be increased significantly compared with previously reported techniques while retaining the capability for updating both channels at high speeds.

Effects of Temporal Light Modulation on Individuals Sensitive to Pattern Glare

Solid-state lighting systems can vary widely in the degree of temporal light modulation (TLM) of their light output. TLM is known to have visual, cognitive, and behavioral effects but there are few recommendations for limits on the acceptable TLM in everyday lighting systems and there is little information concerning individual differences in sensitivity. This paper is a re-analysis of previously presented data, focusing on two subgroups in a larger sample: those scoring low or high on the Wilkins Pattern Glare Sensitivity (PGS) test, which is a validated test that identifies people at high risk of visual stress. In conclusion, the results show that the PGS groups differed in their sensitivity to TLM conditions, despite short exposures and a restricted field of view.

An optical encryption scheme with spatially incoherent illumination based on two micromirror light modulators has been experimentally implemented for the first time. Currently, such modulators are the fastest tools for spatio-temporal light modulation; their high frame rates provide possibilities for developing optical encryption systems with a bandwidth of several gigabites per second. Spatial light modulation in compound semiconductor materials

Spatial light modulation (22) in a III-V single crystal (12), e.g., gallium arsenide, is achieved using the photorefractive effect. Polarization rotation created by beam coupling is utilized in one embodiment. In particular, information (16)on a control beam (14) incident on the crystal is transferred to an input beam (10), also incident on the crystal. An output beam (18) modulated in intensity is obtained by passing the polarization-modulated input beam through a polarizer (20).

Flicker: A review of temporal light modulation stimulus, responses, and measures

Flicker has been an important lighting system consideration for over a century. More precise terms are temporal light modulation (TLM) as the stimulus, and responses to TLM as the unwanted visual, cognitive, or physiological consequences. As lighting technology evolved, different forms of TLM emerged, and so did responses to them. Today, some LED systems – encompassing the LED, driver, and control – can result in TLM causing severe unwanted effects, while other LED systems produce no unwanted effects at all. LED systems can deliver a much wider range of luminous waveforms than conventional lighting systems, some exhibiting very high modulation depths. More than any light source before, they can elicit perceptions of the phantom array. Direct flicker effects at modulation frequencies less than about 80 Hz and the stroboscopic effect at frequencies greater than 80 Hz are fairly well understood, but the phantom array effect needs more exploration and characterisation. This review focuses on the technology and research history that led to current metrics for quantifying TLM and human responses to TLM. Notably, visually impaired individuals may exhibit alterations in their response to TLM, but such a discussion is beyond the intent of this review. Thus, the focus is on individuals with normal visual function.

Joint-transform correlator systems using deformable-mirror spatial light modulators

Two joint-transform correlator systems based on deformable-mirror-device (DMD) spatial light modulators and CCD video cameras are described. The system designs provide for real-time correlation between video-formatted input scenes and stored reference images. The DMD light modulators are used exclusively for inputting data in the optical stages of these systems, and the CCD cameras are used to provide the critical square-law detection required in joint-transform achitectures. Experimental verification of the functionality of these DMD/CCD joint-transform systems is also presented.

Development of a High Output Fluorescent Light Module for the Commercial Plant Biotechnology Facility

To maximize the use of available resources provided onboard the International Space Station, the development of an efficient lighting 1 system is critical to the overall performance of the CPBF. Not only is it important to efficiently generate photon energy, but thermal loads on the CPBF Temperature and Humidity Control System must be minimized. By utilizing optical coatings designed to produce highly diffuse reflectance in the visible wavelengths while minimizing reflectance in the infrared region, the design of the fluorescent light module for the CPBF is optimized for maximum photon flux, spatial uniformity and energy efficiency. Since the Fluorescent Light Module must be fully enclosed to meet (ISS) requirements for containment of particulates and toxic materials, heat removal from the lights presented some unique design challenges. By using the Express Rack moderate C, temperature-cooling loop, heat is rejected by means of a liquid/air coolant manifold. Heat transfer to the manifold is performed by conduction using copper fins, by forced air convection using miniature fans, and by radiation using optically selective coatings that absorb in the infrared wavelengths. Using this combination of heat transfer mechanisms builds in redundancy to prevent thermal build up and premature bulb failure.

Design of a composite filter realizable on practical spatial light modulators

Hybrid optical correlator systems use two spatial light modulators (SLM's), one at the input plane and the other at the filter plane. Currently available SLM's such as the deformable mirror device (DMD) and liquid crystal television (LCTV) SLM's exhibit arbitrarily constrained operating characteristics. The pattern recognition filters designed with the assumption that the SLM's have ideal operating characteristic may not behave as expected when implemented on the DMD or LCTV SLM's. Therefore it is necessary to incorporate the SLM constraints in the design of the filters. In this report, an iterative method is developed for the design of an unconstrained minimum average correlation energy (MACE) filter. Then using this algorithm a new approach for the design of a SLM constrained distortion invariant filter in the presence of input SLM is developed. Two different optimization algorithms are used to maximize the objective function during filter synthesis, one based on the simplex method and the other based on the Hooke and Jeeves method. Also, the simulated annealing based filter design algorithm proposed by Khan and Rajan is refined and improved. The performance of the filter is evaluated in terms of its recognition/discrimination capabilities using computer simulations and the results are compared with a simulated annealing optimization based MACE filter. The filters are designed for different LCTV SLM's operating characteristics and the correlation responses are compared. The distortion tolerance and the false class image discrimination qualities of the filter are comparable to those of the simulated annealing based filter but the new filter design takes about 1/6 of the computer time taken by the simulated annealing filter design.

Characterization of the transport properties of channel delta-doped structures by light-modulated Shubnikov-de Haas measurements

The transport properties of channel delta-doped quantum well structures were characterized by conventional Hall effect and light-modulated Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) effect measurements. The large number of carriers that become available due to the delta-doping of the channel, leads to an apparent degeneracy in the well. As a result of this degeneracy, the carrier mobility remains constant as a function of temperature from 300 K down to 1.4 K. The large amount of impurity scattering, associated with the overlap of the charge carriers and the dopants, resulted in low carrier mobilities and restricted the observation of the oscillatory magneto-resistance used to characterize the two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) by conventional SdH measurements. By light-modulating the carriers, we were able to observe the SdH oscillation at low magnetic fields, below 1.4 tesla, and derive a value for the quantum scattering time. Our results for the ratio of the transport and quantum scattering times are lower than those previously measured for similar structures using much higher magnetic fields.

Increased phase precision of spatial light modulators using irrational slopes: application to attosecond metrology

The ability of spatial light modulators (SLMs) to modify the amplitude and phase of light has proved them invaluable to the optics and photonics community. In many applications, the bit-depth of SLMs is a major limiting factor dictated by a digital processor. As a result, there is usually a compromise between refresh speed and bit-depth. Here, we present a method to increase the effective bit-depth of SLMs, which utilizes a linear slope, as is commonly applied to deal with the zeroth-order effect. This technique was tested using two interferometric transient absorption spectroscopy setups. Through the high harmonic generation in gases producing a train of attosecond pulses and harmonics from solids in the ultraviolet, two pulses are generated that interfere in the far field providing a measurement of the optical phase. An increase in the precision far beyond the limit dictated by the digital processor in the bit-depth was found.
