Performance of pumped counterflow virtual impactors to study aerosol interactions with laboratory generated warm clouds

Pumped Counterflow Virtual Impactors (PCVI) are designed to separate aerosols based on aerodynamic diameter, which is particularly useful for isolating cloud droplets and ice crystals from smaller particles. However, the PCVI transmission efficiency (TE) values reported in the literature show considerable variability, and little information is available on the TEs for cloud liquid droplets. Here, we determined the optimal flow conditions for PCVI sampling for different activation ratios from the MTU Pi-cloud chamber, highlighting the conditions that maximize droplet residual sampling while minimizing interstitial transmission. Even for a lower limit cloud activation ratio = 1:10, an add flow of 1.5 LPM achieves a residual fraction greater than 0.80, with a droplet TE of ∼15% for typical Pi-Chamber droplets with diameters between 3.5 to 10 µm. This framework can be adapted for field cloud measurements based on the cloud conditions of interest. TE for cloud droplets under flow conditions at which ∼99% of the unactivated submicron particles were removed was substantially lower between 8 and 16% than for supermicron dry particles (∼30 to 40% for 3 µm polystyrene latex spheres). In addition, we conducted a comparison of the performances of three similar PCVI units to assess repeatability for dry aerosols and cloud droplets. All three PCVIs performed similarly in rejecting submicron particles smaller than the desired cutoff diameter. One of the units showed lower TEs due to a misalignment of the internal orifice. We discuss a procedure that improved alignment and performance.

Investigating Net-Zero Carbon Microgrids for DOE’s National Laboratory Facilities: A Case Study for Idaho National Laboratory

The concept of net-zero carbon microgrids (NZMs) has received significant interest in recent years considering its promises to provide both energy resilience and carbon reduction. This paper investigates the practical constraints of NZM deployment in a government facility, exploring various cases revolving around the objectives of cost, emission, and energy resilience. The technoeconomic results for one of the Idaho National Laboratory (INL) facilities are discussed to identify a practical and economic approach to achieve the net-zero target considering both present and future scenarios. The study shows the carbon reduction, resilience, and economic success of net-zero initiatives are tied directly to the energy portfolio of its electricity provider. The NZMs typically required a hybrid mix of renewable generation and storage assets to maximize onsite clean generation and to provide reliable power during grid outages. Besides supporting the ongoing net-zero effort at INL, this work also provides a framework that can be directly used in other facilities aspiring to become a net zero in the future.

Determination of Biogenic Content by 14 C in fuels using Liquid Scintillation Analysis Laboratory Analytical Procedure (Laboratory Analytical Procedure)

This procedure covers the determination of the percent 14 C in biogenic gasoline, jet fuel, and diesel range hydrocarbons prepared from distillation of hydrotreated pyrolysis oils and blended with fossil derived hydrocarbons (e.g. fossil diesel, gasoline, jet, or toluene). Either an internal 14C standard or a color quench curve is used to correct for potential signal quenching effects. Recent publications provide some background of direct LSC methods used for determination of biogenic fuel content.

Current polarity effects on laboratory plasma jets

Plasma jets produced by a pulsed power machine were investigated using Thomson scattering and other diagnostics in order to make detailed comparisons to simulations. These jets were produced from a 15 μm thick disc of Al foil on a 1.2 MA, 100 ns rise time, pulsed power machine. Experiments were performed with both a radially inward and a radially outward current ow in the Al foil to investigate the effects of voltage polarity in the experiments and determine how extended magnetohydrodynamic (XMHD) effects, such as the Hall effect, change the formation of the jet. We recorded Thomson scattering spectra with a low enough laser energy to not perturb the plasma, while providing a high enough signal to noise ratio to resolve the scattered features. This enabled the measurement of the electron temperature in the jet region of the plasma, 15.5±4 eV for both current polarities. Jets with a radially outward current ow were heated more from inverse bremsstrahlung when 10 J of laser energy was used, implying that these jets are denser than the ones with a radially inward current. This higher density was con rmed by interferometry measurements. Experimental results were compared with XMHD computer simulations, which predicted electron temperatures 1.5 to 3 σ above those measured, and significantly higher density than experiments in both polarities. In this paper, possible sources of this discrepancy are discussed.

Critical Review of Platinum Group Metal-Free Materials for Water Electrolysis: Transition from the Laboratory to the Market : Earth-abundant borides and phosphides as catalysts for sustainable hydrogen production

To combat the global problem of carbon dioxide emissions, hydrogen is the desired energy vector for the transition to environmentally benign fuel cell power. Water electrolysis (WE) is the major technology for sustainable hydrogen production. Despite the use of renewable solar and wind power as sources of electricity, one of the main barriers for the widespread implementation of WE is the scarcity and high cost of platinum group metals (pgms) that are used to catalyse the cathodic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and the anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Hence, the critical pgm-based catalysts must be replaced with more sustainable alternatives for WE technologies to become commercially viable. This critical review describes the state-of-the-art pgm-free materials used in the WE application, with a major focus on phosphides and borides. Several emerging classes of HER and OER catalysts are reviewed and detailed structure-property correlations are comprehensively summarised. The influence of the crystallographic and electronic structures, morphology and bulk and surface chemistry of the catalysts on the activity towards OER and HER is discussed.

Cooperative Research and Development Agreement among Ames Laboratory; NexTech Materials, Ltd. dba Nexceris; and National Energy Technology Laboratory [Abstract]

The CRADA focuses on pressurized testing of Nexceris solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stacks in a hybrid configuration with a recuperated gas turbine with the ultimate goal of demonstrating efficiencies in excess of 70% (LHV NG). NETL’s cyber-physical approach will be used to develop and test control strategies before installing the Nexceris SOFC stacks to maximize the chances of success. A successful test will represent a demonstration of the Nexceris stack to endure pressures associated with hybrid operation and the first public demonstration of automated hybrid SOFC/GT technology.
