The abundances of Pt, Au, and Hg in the chemically peculiar HgMn-type stars kappa Cancri and chi Lupi

Echelle mode spectra obtained with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) onboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) have been used to determine the abundances of the heavy elements Pt, Au, and Hg in the chemically peculiar HgMn-type stars kappa Cancri and chi Lupi. The abundances were determined by fitting observed line profiles with synthetically generated spectra and are found to be enhanced relative to solar system values by between three and five orders of magnitude in both stars. The Hg isotope mixture in kappa Cancri is found to resemble the terrestrial mixture while that of chi Lupi is dominated by the heaviest isotope. As determined from multiple ionization states, the abundances place constraints upon theories attempting to explain the large superficial abundances of heavy elements.

Compressibility Considerations for kappa-omega Turbulence Models in Hypersonic Boundary Layer Applications

The ability of kappa-omega models to predict compressible turbulent skin friction in hypersonic boundary layers is investigated. Although uncorrected two-equation models can agree well with correlations for hot-wall cases, they tend to perform progressively worse - particularly for cold walls - as the Mach number is increased in the hypersonic regime. Simple algebraic models such as Baldwin-Lomax perform better compared to experiments and correlations in these circumstances. Many of the compressibility corrections described in the literature are summarized here. These include corrections that have only a small influence for kappa-omega models, or that apply only in specific circumstances. The most widely-used general corrections were designed for use with jet or mixing-layer free shear flows. A less well-known dilatation-dissipation correction intended for boundary layer flows is also tested, and is shown to agree reasonably well with the Baldwin-Lomax model at cold-wall conditions. It exhibits a less dramatic influence than the free shear type of correction. There is clearly a need for improved understanding and better overall physical modeling for turbulence models applied to hypersonic boundary layer flows.

Spectral Interpretation of Radio Sounder-Stimulated Magnetospheric Plasma Resonances in Terms of Kappa Distributions

Magnetosphere sounders stimulate plasma resonances between the harmonics of the electron cyclotron frequency and above the upper-hybrid frequency. More than three decades ago they were recognized as equivalent to ionospheric topside-sounder-stimulated resonances, designated as Qn resonances a decade earlier, with one important difference: the magnetospheric Qn frequencies often indicated that the background electron-velocity distribution was non-Maxwellian. Interpretations based on bi-Maxwellian and kappa distributions have been proposed. Here we expand on the latter, which requires fewer free parameters, by comparing kappa-derived Qn frequencies with observations from the Radio Plasma Imager on the Imager for Magnetopause-to-Aurora Global Exploration (IMAGE) satellite.

Gapped magnetic ground state in quantum spin liquid candidate {kappa}-(BEDT-TTF){sub 2}Cu{sub 2}(CN){sub 3}.

Geometrical frustration, quantum entanglement, and disorder may prevent long-range ordering of localized spins with strong exchange interactions, resulting in an exotic state of matter. kappa-(BEDT-TTF)(2)Cu-2(CN)(3) is considered the prime candidate for this elusive quantum spin liquid state, but its ground-state properties remain puzzling. We present a multifrequency electron spin resonance (ESR) study down to millikelvin temperatures, revealing a rapid drop of the spin susceptibility at 6 kelvin. This opening of a spin gap, accompanied by structural modifications, is consistent with the formation of a valence bond solid ground state. We identify an impurity contribution to the ESR response that becomes dominant when the intrinsic spins form singlets. Probing the electrons directly manifests the pivotal role of defects for the low-energy properties of quantum spin systems without magnetic order.

Acoustics Examination of Kappa West Firing ARMAG for Personnel Occupancy

In April of 2023, LANL conducted a series of explosive tests at the Kappa West firing mound at BEEF, NNSS, to examine noise levels within the diagnostics ARMAG next to the firing mound. The intent was to establish an explosive mass that could be detonated on the mound without generating blast noise inside the ARMAG which would be unsafe for personnel. The blast noise threshold for personnel safety during intentional firing operations is 140 dB. Based on data collected during prior experiments, it was anticipated that the noise levels inside the ARMAG would be 20-30 dB lower than noise levels outside the ARMAG. However, data from prior experiments were collected from charges that were not consistent geometries and test layouts, so it was unknown what quantity of explosive would generate the threshold noise level. A prediction was made using the BEC-O standard blast calculator from the DDESB, from which it was estimated that a single, consolidated 60-pound charge at 180 feet would generate blast noise levels of about 170 dB, with noise levels falling to a predicted 166 dB at 250 feet.

Absolute ultraviolet spectrophotometry of: alpha CMa, gamma Ori, kappa Ori, and alpha Leo; and a continuing calibration program and some preliminary results

Spectral observations of the stars alpha CMa, gamma Ori, kappa Ori, and alpha Leo have been obtained in the range 1150 to 4000 Angstroms, using rocket borne spectrometers. The payloads have a 13-inch diameter telescope, a rotatable concave diffraction grating, and three pulse counting photomultiplier photometers. The laboratory standards used as photometric references derive their primary calibration directly or indirectly from the National Bureau of Standards. An error range of up to + or - 10 percent is attributed to these laboratory standards; + or - 8 percent to the calibration procedure; and + or - 10 percent is assigned as an accidental error range.

Helium emission in the spectrum of Kappa Canis Majoris

Coude spectra of kappa CMa in the red region showed H alpha and He 1 lambda lambda 5876,6678 in emission. Each of the lines had two emission components, but the helium lines had no detectable absorption feature in between. While the H alpha emission peaks were separated by 160 km/sec, the helium lines were separated by 400 km/sec. A simple model is proposed to account for the behavior of these emission lines.

Rocket-ultraviolet spectra of kappa, lambda, tau, and upsilon Scorpii

The present work describes high- and low-resolution rocket-ultraviolet spectra of kappa, lambda, tau, and upsilon Scorpii obtained in the range from 1160 to 1880 A. The Si IV resonance lines in tau Sco show asymmetries indicating outward mass motions of up to about 400 km/sec. The suitability of some of the lines observed for indication of luminosity or temperature is discussed. It is pointed out that the intrinsic strength and large changes of the lines of Si III and C IV may permit a more accurate spectral classification of stars between B0 and B3 than has been demonstrated in this same spectral type region using visible spectra.

The occultation of Kappa Geminorum by Eros

The paper discusses predictions and observations of the occultation of Kappa Gem by (433) Eros on January 24, 1975. Several positive and negative observations made in western New England are described. Local circumstances for the occultation are reconstructed, and the size and shape of Eros are determined analytically as well as graphically. The calculations yield two extremes for the cross section: a circle 23 km in diameter or a somewhat irregular figure 20 km by 6 or 7 km. Arguments based on the expected albedo of the asteroid suggest that the circle should be warped into an ellipse 21 by 13 km or that the irregular figure might be one component of a dumbbell-like profile.

Detection of interstellar boron in front of kappa Orionus

The detection of interstellar boron in the direction of kappa Ori, obtained with the Copernicus satellite telescope by observing the B II 1362.46-A resonance line is reported. A B/H concentration ratio of (1.5 + or - 0.7) x 10 to the -10th (2 standard deviation error bar) is obtained. The main uncertainty lies in the determination of the continuum of the star in that wavelength region, dominated by a broad stellar absorption feature. The value inferred for B/H in the interstellar medium is consistent with the solar and stellar values, believed to be the galactic value, and with the theory of the production of B by cosmic rays in the interstellar medium.

Elemental abundance analyses with coadded Dominion Astrophysical Observatory spectrograms. II - The mercury-manganese stars 53 Tauri, Mu Leporis and Kappa Cancri

Elemental abundance analyses based on the coaddition of at least 10 2.4 A/mm Ila-O Dominion Astrophysical Observatory spectrograms have been performed for three mercury-manganese stars, 53 Tauri, Mu Leporis, and Kappa Cancri. These fine analyses show a greater degree of internal consistency than previous studies based on lower signal-to-noise data. Lines as weak as of order 3 mA are employed in these studies, and lines of atomic species not previously identified have been discovered. The status of 53 Tau as an anomalous member of this class is confirmed in that it lacks a Hg II 3984 A line even at the 2 mA level. Further, its surface gravity indicates it is less evolved than Mu Lep and Chi Cnc. Violations of the odd-even effect in the photospheric abundances of all three stars suggest that nonnuclear processes have operated in their atmospheres. Some of the values are substantially changed from their presumably initial solar values.

A kappa-epsilon calculation of transitional boundary layers

A recently proposed kappa-epsilon model for low Reynolds number turbulent flows was modified by introducing a new damping function f(sub mu). The modified model is used to calculate the transitional boundary layer over a flat plate with different freestream turbulence levels. It is found that the model could mimic the transitional flow. However, the predicted transition is found to be sensitive to the initial conditions.

Low Reynolds number kappa-epsilon modeling with the aid of direct simulation data

The constant C(sub mu) and the near-wall damping function f(sub mu) in the eddy-viscosity relation of the kappa-epsilon model are evaluated from direct numerical simulation (DNS) data for developed channel and boundary layer flow at two Reynolds numbers each. Various existing f(sub mu) model functions are compared with the DNS data, and a new function is fitted to the high-Reynolds-number channel flow data. The epsilon-budget is computed for the fully developed channel flow. The relative magnitude of the terms in the epsilon-equation is analyzed with the aid of scaling arguments, and the parameter governing this magnitude is established. Models for the sum of all source and sink terms in the epsilon-equation are tested against the DNS data, and an improved model is proposed.

A convected kappa distribution model for hot ions in the Jovian magnetodisc

Hot ion angular anisotropies measured by the Low Energy Charged Particle (LECP) instrument during the Voyager 2 encounter with the Jovian dayside outer magnetosphere (60-30 RJ) have been fitted to a 2 species convected kappa distribution function using a nonlinear least squares technique. The resulting parameters are well constrained by the data. The heavy ion species was assumed to be either sulfur or oxygen of unknown charge. The light species was assumed to be protons. The bulk flow speeds deduced from the model were found, contrary to some theories, to increase with increasing radial distance from Jupiter within the radial region addressed, remaining a substantial fraction (0.6) of the rigid corotation speed. Agreement with the averaged Voyager Plasma Science results was obtained near 30 RJ. The core Maxwellian temperature of the heavy ion distribution functions (30-100 keV) increased with increasing radial distance, following the trend anticipated from the corotation pickup of heavy ions. The proton temperature (20 keV) remained nearly constant.

A new tool for analyzing microinstabilities in space plasmas modeled by a generalized Lorentzian (kappa) distribution

The modified plasma dispersion function Z* sub kappa (xi) based on the generalized Lorentzian distribution, which was introduced by Summers and Thorne (1991), is used to analyze three classical problems of plasma physics. These include the Landau damping of Langmuir waves, the ion acoustic instability in a current-carrying plasma, and the cyclotron resonant instability of electromagnetic R mode waves propagating parallel to an ambient magnetic field. It was found that, in each case, the results for a generalized Lorentzian plasma can differ significantly from those for a Maxwellian plasma. It is suggested that previous calculations based on a Maxwellian plasma distribution function Z(xi) have to be reexamined.

Internal Passage Heat Transfer Prediction Using Multiblock Grids and a Kappa-Omega Turbulence Model

Numerical simulations of the three-dimensional flow and heat transfer in a rectangular duct with a 180 C bend were performed. Results are presented for Reynolds numbers of 17,000 and 37,000 and for aspect ratios of 0.5 and I.O. A kappa-omega turbulence model with no reference to distance to a wall is used. Direct comparison between single block and multiblock grid calculations are made. Heat transfer and velocity distributions are compared to available literature with good agreement. The multi-block grid system is seen to produce more accurate results compared to a single-block grid with the same number of cells.
