2025 Intern Poster

The Hot Fuel Examination Facility (HFEF) at the Materials and Fuels Complex (MFC) houses the largest U.S. inert atmosphere hot cell for nuclear material research. Key features include the precision gamma scanning (PGS), Fuel Accident Condition Simulator (FACS), Neutron Radiography Reactor (NRAD), and the focus of this project, the Metallograph Loading Cell (MET Cell). The MET Cell performs tests on spent nuclear fuel, such as microhardness testing, microscopy, and neutron radiography. However, the MET Cell’s existing pressure and lighting control systems are outdated and inefficient, with inadequate documentation for system changes over time. This project aims to design a new automated control system for the MET Cell, ensuring longevity (minimum ten years), ease of troubleshooting/repair, and integration into the building monitoring system. The design process addressed challenges such as space restrictions, varied voltages within enclosures, sourcing new components, and security limitations. Compliance with NFPA 70, UL508A, MFC Physical Security, and INL Engineering standards was essential. The project involves repurposing an existing PLC to manage lighting and pressure control using digital and analog signals, simplifying wiring, and ensuring thorough documentation for future reference.

2025 Intern Poster - Abbigail Short

The OSCC Coupling Shaft Handling Fixture, known as the "Puppy Dog Tool," was originally designed by hand in 1976. The initial design was difficult to read and replicate, lacking 3D modeling for simulations and testing. To modernize the tool, the original drawings were reviewed and recreated in Autodesk Inventor with increased spacing for clarity. Key improvements included adding a hook, modifying the top plate and main body connection, and introducing a guiding wall for the clamp. These changes enhanced durability and usability, preventing bending and facilitating easier assembly. The updated design preserved the tool's functionality while making it more robust and user-friendly for high-precision operations.

Advanced nuclear reactors often operate at elevated temperatures, novel fuel with different chemical and thermal properties that may interact differently with cladding, new coolants (e.g., molten salt, liquid metal, or sodium) that are chemically aggressive, requires cladding materials with superior oxidation, corrosion, and creep resistance. Developing fuel cladding for advanced reactors is essential, as the cladding plays a critical role in reactor safety, performance, and longevity. In this study, innovative Non-Concentrated Alloys (NCAs) were developed as novel fuel cladding materials for advanced nuclear reactors. Multiple elements were chosen for the alloys. NCAs were manufactured and tested mechanically, showing promise with the arc-melting method, and setting a clear path for the next step of NCAs' development as a fuel cladding for advanced nuclear reactors.

Large Language Models (LLMs) have skyrocketed in popularity after the release of ChatGPT in late 2022. Although LLMs are powerful tools, they can be subject to hallucinations, which is when an LLM (or any AI model) produces misleading/ nonsensical information. The objective is to determine if statistical methods can be used to detect hallucinations as an LLM generates its answer token by token (essentially word by word).

Intern Poster: STIG Shouldn't Drop ACID

STIG (Structured Threat Intelligence Graph) is an open-source graph database tool from INL. It’s used to create and process cyber intelligence graphs, which are shared in the cyber threat intelligence community and used to train INL machine learning products like @DisCo. For quality machine learning and critical infrastructure defense, STIG’s database must be ACID: Atomic, Consistent, Isolated, Durable. Various ACID tests were designed and applied to STIG to ensure its behavior follows these properties.

The Internet of Things (IoT) encompasses a vast network of interconnected devices embedded with software, sensors, and network connectivity, enabling data collection and exchange. While IoT technology revolutionizes various industries, it also introduces significant security challenges. This research focuses on enhancing IoT security through the implementation of Zero Trust Architecture concepts, specifically targeting the Network and Device pillars of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s Zero Trust Maturity Model. By generating Codified Attack Surfaces (CAS) using custom Structured Threat Information eXpression bundles, this project aims to provide enhanced visibility into network communications, detect vulnerabilities in device firmware, and improve the overall security posture for IoT devices and networks. The methodology involves defining custom STIX schema and objects, collecting data from intra-IoT traffic, external network traffic, and firmware analysis, and automating the conversion and correlation of this data into STIX bundles. The automated generation of attack surfaces offers comprehensive insights into activity, vulnerabilities, and anomalies within an IoT environment, enabling proactive threat identification and mitigation.

Time at Temperature Abstract and Intern Poster

Current NRC regulations for BWR operations dictate that any occurrence reaching the point of Departure from Nucleate Boiling (DNB) disqualifies the use of the fuel rod for further reactor operation. That criteria does not account for duration of rate of the power increase, the corresponding effects on material properties or rewetting that may occur. Previous Anticipated Operational Occurrences (AOOs) show short durations power increase that may require limited amounts of heat removal. Industrial experience has shown evidence that fuel can reach dryout yet continue to safely operate in regular reactor conditions. The gap in research into such occurrences is the motivation for a series of experiments, including this current work. Time-at-Temperature experiments aim to identify and characterize the microstructural changes in Zircaloy-2 under oxygen-free high temperatures. This work uses the FlashDSC instrument to rapidly ramp up and down the temperature of a focus ion beam (FIB) prepared large area lift-out (LALO) of Zircaloy-2 at a rate of 10,000 K/s to desired values. The focus is to characterize the microstructure evolution, if any, of Zircaloy-2 that may impact its performance under typical BWR conditions. This characterization includes analyzing grain structure and size, secondary phase particle (SPPs) size, shape, composition, and location using Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Further data collection and analysis is in progress including diffraction pattern indexing and 4D STEM processing. While current results focus on the testing and characterizing unirradiated material, future plans include expansion to irradiated material to explore the effects of rapid transition rates seen in DNB and dryout conditions on irradiationg damage and defect annealing.

INL Intern Poster Session

Characterization of off-gas constituents from nuclear fuel reprocessing can be measured using a residual gas analyzer. Characterization of this off-gas is important in a closed fuel cycle, where gasses such as Nox, Kr, I, and C-14 need to be removed from reprocessing plants to meet regulatory requirements. Both Kr and Xe have low chemical reactivity, making capture and separation difficult. Solid sorbents can be used to capture these gases as an alternative to cryogenic distillation, which is energy intensive and hazardous. AgZ-PAN and HZ-PAN are two solid sorbents that have demonstrated selective capture of Xe and Kr. A residual gas analyzer can be used to obtain breakthrough curves that demonstrate how well this adsorption and separation occur. The breakthrough curve is dependent on packing density, column size, and flow rate. Data obtained from the RGA was verified with a gas chromatographer.

Intern Poster Session 08/13: Autonomous Nuclear Robotics: Applications in nuclear waste inspection and hot cell experiments

The nuclear industry is experiencing renewed interest in autonomous robotics, yet most deployed systems remain teleoperated with limited autonomy. This work presents two contributions toward fully autonomous nuclear robotic systems: autonomous waste inspection at the Hanford Site and an autonomous hot cell laboratory framework. Inspections of Hanford's underground waste storage tanks are performed manually at significant cost and personnel exposure. We developed a reinforcement-learning (RL) training pipeline for a custom-built inspection arm. In parallel, we are designing an autonomous laboratory framework for post-irradiation examination in hot cells at the Specimen Preparation Laboratory (SPL) that integrates computer vision, task and motion planning, hardware execution, and operator-in-the-loop control. These systems demonstrate a path toward safer, more efficient nuclear operations by reducing human exposure while maintaining rigorous human oversight at critical decision points.
