Methods of forming interdigitated back contact layers

Methods of forming interdigitated back contact (IBC) layers are provided. According to an aspect of the invention, a first layer having alternating regions of n-type amorphous hydrogenated silicon and p-type amorphous hydrogenated silicon is formed on a second layer of intrinsic amorphous hydrogenated silicon. The first layer and the second layer are then annealed, such that dopants from the first layer diffuse into the second layer, and the first layer and the second layer crystallize into polysilicon.

Methods of forming interdigitated back contact solar cells

Methods for forming interdigitated back contact solar cells from III-V materials are provided. According to an aspect of the invention, a method includes depositing a patterned Zn layer to cover first areas of an n-type emitter region, wherein the emitter region comprises a III-V material, and forming a passivated back contact region by counter-doping the first areas of the emitter region by diffusing Zn from the patterned Zn layer into the first areas of the emitter region, such that the first areas of the emitter region become p-type.

Interdigitated power connector

An electrical connector carries large amounts of electrical current between two circuit boards with low resistance and low self-inductance by means of an interdigitated anode and cathode, thereby providing low dynamic voltage loss. The connector also may include, near where power will be consumed, an interposer board with on-board capacitance to provide even lower dynamic voltage loss. The connector has application to delivering low-voltage, high-current power from a power supply on a first board to electronics on a second board: the low resistance provides low voltage drop for a load current that is constant, while the low inductance and the capacitors provide low voltage fluctuation for a load current that changes. These issues are of great importance, for example, in designing high-performance computers.

High-resolution in situ electrochemical NMR with interdigitated electrodes

A system for carrying out electrochemical nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (EC-NMR) is disclosed, along with methods of manufacturing the EC-NMR system, and methods of using the EC-NMR system to monitor electrochemical reactions. The system comprises interdigitated electrodes arranged in a cylindrically symmetric manner. The system allows for nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy to be carried out on a sample during electrolysis with minimal effect to its sensitivity.

Interdigital Capacitance Sensor for Cable Insulation Test and Monitoring

A substantial body of work suggests feasibility to measure cable jacket and insulation conditions using various forms of interdigital capacitance (IDC) sensors. The sensors can either be used to manually test local cable conditions or as permanently installed sensors. Eligible cables subject to these measurements do not include shielded cables but the set of candidate cables is expanded from only unjacketed cables by the ability to assess insulation condition through the jacket. Dual gap IDC sensors are confirmed to be able to sense the insulation condition beneath a polymer jacket and, moreover, the IDC is the only known way to assess the insulation condition through the jacket. PNNL has filed a patent for this approach and is exploring commercial partnerships to exploit IDC technology for actionable field measurements.

Additively Manufactured Interdigital Filters for Ultra- Wideband Radar

Abstract— In this paper, we present the development of ultrawideband (UWB) inter-digital cavity filters manufactured with an additive technique. We employed a selective laser melting process with stainless steel via a “flipping and fixturing” approach to achieve dimensional accuracy and frequency selectivity (no postfabrication tuning) comparable to that of conventional micromachining. The filters operate at a center frequency of 3.75 GHz and 6 GHz, respectively, with an instantaneous bandwidth of 2 GHz. This paper presents design and fabrication details, a discussion of measured characteristics for both filters, and a performance comparison with respect to subtractively manufactured parts.

Highly tail-asymmetric lipids interdigitate and cause bidirectional ordering

Phospholipids form structurally and compositionally diverse membranes. A less studied type of compositional diversity involves phospholipid tail variety. Some phospholipids contain two acyl tails which differ in length. These tail-asymmetric lipids are shown to contribute to temperature sensitivity, oxygen adaptability, and membrane fluidity. Membranes of a highly virulent intracellular bacterium, Francisella tularensis, contain highly tail-asymmetric 1-lignoceroyl-2-decanoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphatidylethanolamine (XJPE) lipids which were previously shown to inhibit inflammatory responses in host cells. XJPE tails have unusually high asymmetry, and how they contribute to membrane properties on a molecular level is unknown. Here, we use small angle X-ray scattering and molecular dynamics simulations to investigate how varying XJPE ratios alters properties of simple membranes. Our results demonstrate that at high concentration they promote liquid-to-gel transition in otherwise liquid membranes, while at low concentration they are tolerated well, minimally altering membrane properties. In liquid membranes, XJPE lipids dynamically adopt two main conformations; with the long tail extended into the opposing leaflet or bent-back residing in its own leaflet. When added to both leaflets XJPE primarily adopts an extended confirmation, while asymmetric addition results in more bent-back orientations. The former increases tail ordering and the latter decreases it. XJPE tails adopt different conformations that induce composition- and leaflet-dependent bidirectional effect on membrane fluidity and this suggests that Francisella tularensis could use tail asymmetry to facilitate vesicle fusion and destabilize host cells. The effect of tail-asymmetric lipids on complex membranes should be further investigated to reveal the regulatory roles of high tail asymmetry.

Interdigitated conducting tetrathiafulvalene-based coordination networks

Here, assembly of a novel ethylenedithio-tetrathiafulvalene (EDT-TTF) derivative bearing two adjacent 4-thiopyridyl groups with M(NCS)2 nodes (M = Fe, Co) leads to two isostructural 1D coordination polymers showing an enhancement of their electronic conductivity by six orders of magnitude (10 –6 vs. 10 –12 S cm –1 ), upon surface oxidation by iodine and subsequent generation of EDT-TTF-based radicals.

III-V/Si Tandem Cells Utilizing Interdigitated Back Contact Si Cells and Varying Terminal Configurations

Integrating wide-bandgap III-V with Si solar cells has been shown to yield higher efficiencies than Si alone: As also presented at this conference, four-terminal efficiencies exceeding 32% have been attained. In this contribution, independent and electrically connected operation of the subcells in such tandem cells is examined. The optics of the tandem cell change significantly if a conducting interconnect, rather than an insulating glass slide, is required between the subcells. These effects are studied, and optically optimized structures for different types of tandem cell operation are presented. It is found that minimizing reflection at the conductive interface between the two cells while maintaining conductivity is the key challenge faced in such devices.
