Preliminary study of turbojets with rotary flow inductors for a low-noise supersonic transport

In a simplified airplane-mission study for a Mach 2.61 supersonic transport, dry turbojets with and without real suppressors and dry turbojets with ideal rotary flow inductors were studied for sideline noise levels as low as FAR 36-20. Compressor pressure ratio was varied from 5 to 30 and turbine temperature from 1800 to 3000 F. For no noise constraint and without a suppressor, the best dry turbojet gave a payload of 9.0 percent of gross weight and a sideline noise of 126 effective perceived noise decibels. Payload dropped rapidly for lower noise goals, becoming 6.3 percent of gross weight at FAR 36. At FAR 36, the turbojet with suppressor gave a payload of 8.3 percent and the turbojet with ideal rotary flow inductor, 7.3 percent. Below FAR 36, the ideal inductor was far superior to the real suppressor, giving payloads of 6.6 percent at FAR 36-10 and 5.7 percent at FAR 36-20.

Simplified cut core inductor design

Although filter inductor designers have routinely tended to specify molypermalloy powder cores for use in high frequency power converters and pulse-width modulated switching regulators, there are sigificant advantages in specifying C cores and cut toroids fabricated from grain oriented silicon steels which should not be overlooked. Such steel cores can develop flux densities of 1.6 tesla, with useful linearity to 1.2 tesla, whereas molypermalloy cores carrying d.c. current have useful flux density capabilities only to about 0.3 tesla. The use of silicon steel cores thus makes it possible to design more compact cores, and therefore inductors of reduced volume, or conversely to provide greater load capacity in inductors of a given volume. Information is available which makes it possible to obtain quick and close approximations of significant parameters such as size, weight and temperature rise for silicon steel cores for breadboarding. Graphs, nomographs and tables are presented for this purpose, but more complete mathematical derivations of some of the important parameters are also included for a more rigorous treatment.

Spacecraft transformer and inductor design

The conversion process in spacecraft power electronics requires the use of magnetic components which frequently are the heaviest and bulkiest items in the conversion circuit. This handbook pertains to magnetic material selection, transformer and inductor design tradeoffs, transformer design, iron core dc inductor design, toroidal power core inductor design, window utilization factors, regulation, and temperature rise. Relationships are given which simplify and standardize the design of transformers and the analysis of the circuits in which they are used. The interactions of the various design parameters are also presented in simplified form so that tradeoffs and optimizations may easily be made.

Temperature Dependence of Thin Film Spiral Inductors on Alumina Over a Temperature Range of 25 to 475 C

In this paper, we present an analysis of inductors on an Alumina substrate over the temperature range of 25 to 475 C. Five sets of inductors, each set consisting of a 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, and a 4.5 turn inductor with different line width and spacing, were measured on a high temperature probe station from 10 MHz to 30 GHz. From these measured characteristics, it is shown that the inductance is nearly independent of temperature for low frequencies compared to the self resonant frequency, the parasitic capacitances are independent of temperature, and the resistance varies nearly linearly with temperature. These characteristics result in the self resonant frequency decreasing by only a few percent as the temperature is increased from 25 to 475 C, but the maximum quality factor decreases by a factor of 2 to 3. These observations based on measured data are confirmed through 2D simulations using Sonnet software.

Broadside coupled coplanar inductors

A broadside coupled coplanar inductor device includes first and second coplanar inductors in which the conductors of the first and second coplanar inductors are broadside coupled. The conductors are located one above the other at a first distance and the return paths are located to the side of the respective first and second conductor signal paths at a second distance. One or both of the dimensions of the first and second first distances is defined so as to maximize a mutual inductance between the conductors. First and second driver circuit apply voltages across each conductor. The input pulse width modulation signals applied to the first and second driver circuits are 180 degrees out of phase.

Multi-objective Optimization Paradigm for Toroidal Inductors with Spatially Tuned Permeability

Spatially tuning core permeability of an electromagnetic device enables superior performance. A permeability profile can be heuristically selected to improve the flux distribution in a device with a given geometry, but in order to fully leverage the capacity of spatial dependent permeability engineering, the geometry and the permeability should be optimized simultaneously. The work herein presented sets forth a multi-physics design optimization paradigm that includes the permeability profile tuning in the context of an inductor design. This approach enables the determination of Pareto optimal fronts consisting of a set of optimal solutions against competing objectives (e.g. mass and loss) under imposed constraints. To this end, analytical solutions of the heat transfer and electromagnetic formulations are derived for toroidal inductors. The software implemented in Matlab 2018b is available online as an attachment to this paper.

Simplifier cut core inductor design

Advantages of specifying C cores and cut toroids fabricated from grain oriented silicon steels for use in high frequency power converters and pulse width modulated switching regulators are discussed. A method for rating cores assigns to each core a number which is the product of its window and core cross section area, called 'Area Product A sub p.' A correlation between the A sub p numbers and current density for a given temperature rise was developed. Also, straight line relationships were developed for A sub p and volume, A sub p and surface area, and A sub p and weight. These relationships can be used to simplify and standardize the process of inductor design. They also make it possible to design inductors of small bulk and volume or to optimize efficiency.

Modeling of switching regulator power stages with and without zero-inductor-current dwell time

State space techniques are employed to derive accurate models for buck, boost, and buck/boost converter power stages operating with and without zero-inductor-current dwell time. A generalized procedure is developed which treats the continuous-inductor-current mode without the dwell time as a special case of the discontinuous-current mode, when the dwell time vanishes. An abrupt change of system behavior including a reduction of the system order when the dwell time appears is shown both analytically and experimentally.

Discrete time domain modelling and analysis of dc-dc converters with continuous and discontinuous inductor current

Using discrete time state variable representation, a generalized computer-aided modeling and analysis of dc-dc converters is presented. The methodology provides exact modeling and is applicable to all types of power stages and duty-cycle control, including continuous and discontinuous inductor current operation. Converter stability, transient behavior and audio susceptibility can be analytically evaluated and predicted. The generalized theory of the proposed approach to converter modeling and analysis is presented first, followed by a demonstrative example applying the theory to a constant frequency buck converter operating in continuous and discontinuous inductor current mode. Excellent agreement with laboratory test data has been observed.

Modeling of switching regulator power stages with and without zero-inductor-current dwell time

State-space techniques are employed to derive accurate models for the three basic switching converter power stages: buck, boost, and buck/boost operating with and without zero-inductor-current dwell time. A generalized procedure is developed which treats the continuous-inductor-current mode without dwell time as a special case of the discontinuous-current mode when the dwell time vanishes. Abrupt changes of system behavior, including a reduction of the system order when the dwell time appears, are shown both analytically and experimentally. Merits resulting from the present modeling technique in comparison with existing modeling techniques are illustrated.

An improved push-pull voltage fed converter using a tapped output-filter inductor

A new concept of using a tapped output-filter inductor and an auxiliary commutating diode to reduce the likelihood of transformer core saturation in a push-pull, voltage-fed converter is presented. The linearized circuit model and transfer functions are derived with a hybrid approach using both state-space and circuit averaging. Operation of the new converter - including parasitic effects - is discussed, and a design equation for inductor tap ratio is established. It is predicted and experimentally confirmed that the new converter has more symmetrical transformer core operation, and the potential exits for lower transistor turnon current and reduced transistor voltage stress. These benefits reduce switching loss and enhance transistor reliability.

On modeling the common mode inductor

The common mode inductor is the corner stone of filter design. One of the most important parameters of performance is leakage inductance. The role of leakage inductance in filter performance and current handling is discussed. It is demonstrated that leakage inductance is, in fact, desirable. Underlying physics of operation for the common mode inductor is reviewed. A model is presented which enables the designer to predict the leakage inductance of the common mode choke.
