MetaPoL: Immersive VR based Indoor Patterns of Life (PoL) and Anomalies Data Generation for Insider Threat Modeling in Nuclear Security

Insider threats are perhaps the most serious challenges that nuclear and radiological security systems face. Insiders pose such a great threat due to their access, authority, and knowledge, granting them opportunities to bypass dedicated nuclear and radiological security elements. For example, in one of the latest major insider threat incidents to nuclear security, the Doel-4 nuclear powerplant in Belgium suffered a shutdown, the threat of nuclear materials diversion, and long-term loss of tens of millions of dollars. Seven years of investigation concluded that it was an inside job and attempted sabotage. In this regard, there is an immediate need for R&D and technology integration in the domain of modeling indoor Patterns-of-Life (PoL) and anomaly detection. This can be achieved by using datasets of facility users’ mobility and activity, which can support the design of algorithms for insider threat modeling and detection. However, due to classification, privacy, sensitivity, and safety protocols, such datasets from real physical nuclear reactor facilities are not only hard to share, but also not always feasible to deploy and collect. Aiming to find an alternate solution, our proposed demonstration work - MetaPoL, is the first-ever (for the application space) immersive VR (virtual reality) environment of a real-world secure facility and allows users to move-and-stay through the designed indoor physical layout and also encounter NPCs (non-player characters) that emulate other facility users. In the MetaPoL an interactive user performs realistic spatio-temporal movement, dwelling and activities using a Meta Quest Pro VR headset, and that generates high-frequency (in time) high-resolution (in space) indoor spatial-temporal datasets that are valuable for PoL modeling and anomaly detection research specifically for insider threat modeling and detection mission. Such generated realistic, rich in context, and mission specific datasets can boost AI/Machine Learning based research for modeling and detecting insider threats in nuclear security and nonproliferation.

Data for The impact of aerosol mixing state on immersion freezing: Insights from classical nucleation theory and particle-resolved simulations

This dataset contains the values directly shown in the figures of the article "The impact of aerosol mixing state on immersion freezing: Insights from classical nucleation theory and particle-resolved simulations". This article is in preparation for submission to the journal Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics. The dataset consists of 12 NetCDF files processed from the raw output of the PartMC model. It does not include the theoretical values of frozen fraction, which can be computed using the equations provided in the paper. *New in V2: adding data for a newly included figure (INP_spectrum.nc), removing files that are no longer used in the revised manuscript figures (e.g., UNC_A_ratio=0.9_Dp=0.1.nc, UNC_A_ratio=0.9_Dp=10.0.nc, UNC_A_ratio=0.1_Dp=0.1.nc, and UNC_A_ratio=0.1_Dp=10.0.nc), and updating README.pdf accordingly.

Next Generation Heat Transfer Fluids for Two-Phase Immersion Cooling of Data Centers

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the performance of next generation dielectric fluids in a Two-Phase Immersion Cooling (2PIC) system, which was designed for use in data centers. Hence, this report contains the performance evaluations of a new developmental dielectric fluid, Opteon™ 2P50, in a commercially available small-scale 2PIC system under typical and off-design range of operating conditions. Accordingly, ambient temperature and thermal loads were varied to simulate different ambient conditions. Additionally, this research report describes the development of a semi-empirical lumped model to predict the energy efficiency of the 2PIC system using Opteon™ 2P50 across a wide range of conditions. The model aims to offer a comprehensive understanding of the system’s efficiency and potential improvements. The outcomes of this study are expected to contribute to the adoption of sustainable 2PIC cooling technologies in data centers.

Exploring the Use of Large Immersive Display Systems in the Nuclear Industry

Large immersive display systems play a critical role in the nuclear industry by enabling advanced training, design reviews, scientific visualization, and safety simulations. These systems, such as CAVE and powerwalls, allow engineers and operators to interact with virtual nuclear environments in real-time, providing a deeper understanding of complex systems. Their ability to simulate real-world scenarios for testing and optimization in a safe, controlled environment ensures that operators and engineers can refine process, enhance safety protocols, and troubleshoot complex challenges. This article outlines key lessons learned from deploying these systems, practical insights into their applications, and considerations for future improvements, aiming to guide their broader adoption and effective use in the nuclear industry.

Data Center Immersion Cooling: A Case Study and Summary of High-Performance Computing Cooling Technologies

The future of High Performance Computing (HPC) is carved out for all high-performance facilities. As computer processing increases exponentially, especially with the demand for AI training, more speed will equate to more computing density and ultimately more power draw and resource demand. Sandia National Laboratories has not seen or known of anything that would lead us to think this might change in the next 5 to 10 years.
