2022 National Household Travel Survey - Oahu Add-On

# 2022 National Household Travel Survey – Oahu Add-On The Oahu add-on survey supplements the 2022 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) with additional household samples and detailed travel behavior for an assigned travel day. ## Data Collection Agency The Federal Highway Administration conducted the NHTS and corresponding add-on surveys. ## Survey Methodology The 2022 NHTS, which covered assigned travel dates from January 2022 to January 2023, collected data on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of households as well as detailed information on travel behavior nationwide. State transportation departments and metropolitan planning agencies—like the Oahu Metropolitan Planning Organization—had the opportunity to purchase extra household samples as part of the NHTS add-on program. These additional samples, along with national samples collected in the add-on areas, are compiled for use in transportation planning, forecasting, and research. ## Survey Records, Data, and Documentation Survey records include 7,397 participants from 3,170 households in Oahu, Hawaii, as well as detailed information on the travel behavior of each household for a designated 24-hour period. The survey logged over 14,868 trips totaling 165,000 vehicle miles traveled.

# 2012 California Household Travel Survey Supplement The 2012 California Household Travel Survey Supplement focused on gathering specific travel information from residents for the development of next-generation, activity-based models. Called the "Augment Survey," it supplemented the [2010–2012 California Household Travel Survey](https://www.nrel.gov/transportation/secure-transportation-data/tsdc-california-travel-survey). ## Data Collection Agency The Southern California Association of Governments (SCAG) hired Abt-SRBI, Inc. to conduct the survey. ## Methodology Travel data were collected from households via in-vehicle (625 vehicles) and wearable (244 participants) global positioning system (GPS) devices. ## Drive Cycle Processing and Filtering NREL has developed a GPS data filtration routine to filter erroneous data points in individual drive cycles sourced from GPS devices mounted in vehicles. Second-by-second drive cycle data collected from GPS-instrumented vehicles during this survey have passed through NREL's drive cycle processing and filtering routines. ## Survey Records Study records include 473 households. ## Transportation Data The SCAG data set contains data from 473 households that participated in one or more areas of study. Of these, 141 completed the wearable GPS portion of the study and 332 completed the vehicle GPS portion. There was no overlap between households participating in the two study areas (wearable and vehicle GPS). Modeling household-level party composition behavior for multiparty activities: a random parameter nested logit modeling approach

This study presents findings of a household-level party composition model for multiparty activities. It exploits data from a comprehensive Household Travel Survey conducted by Chicago Metropolitan Agency of Planning. The study estimates a random parameter nested logit model to capture households’ unobserved preference heterogeneity and non-proportional substitution patterns in terms of activity party composition for multiparty activities. A wide variety of household demographics, activity attributes and residential neighborhood characteristics are examined in this paper. The magnitude of the impacts of the determinants are tested in this study by analyzing the elasticity of the variables, which suggests that household demographics and attributes of the multiparty activities have significant effects on the household-level activity party composition. Residential neighborhood characteristics, although somewhat less impactful, still play a meaningful role. This model will be implemented within the POLARIS transportation systems simulator to improve the activity generation modeling workflow, and the prediction accuracy of various activity-travel components.

2012-2013 Delaware Valley Household Travel Survey

The 2012-2013 Delaware Valley Household Travel Survey collected data for multiple planning purposes such as the calibration of a new activity-based travel demand model. It features data from households across nine counties in the region, including southern New Jersey and southeastern Pennsylvania. The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) sponsored the survey, which was administered by Abt Srbi Inc. A sampling strategy was designed to recruit households for survey participation that would best represent overall regional travel trends. Households were selected randomly, but with special consideration given to under-represented geographies and transit propensity. On their assigned travel day, households were asked to record all trips made within a 24-hour period. Additionally, select households were chosen to participate in a wearable global positioning system (GPS) technology-based component of the study. A total of 811 participants wore the GPS system.

2001 National Household Travel Survey - Wisconsin Add-On

The Wisconsin add-on survey supplements the 2001 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) with additional household samples and detailed travel behavior for an assigned travel day. The Federal Highway Administration and Wisconsin Department of Transportation conducted the survey. The NHTS ran from March 2001 through May 2002, with data collection for the Wisconsin add-on occurring May 1, 2001, to May 6, 2002. The NHTS collected detailed information on travel behavior nationwide, as well as data on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of households. State transportation departments and metropolitan planning agencies had the opportunity to purchase extra household samples as part of the NHTS add-on program. These additional samples, along with national samples collected in the add-on areas, are compiled for use in transportation planning, forecasting, and research. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation participated in the NHTS add-on program and received a total of 17,610 household samples in Wisconsin. (The total number of household samples nationwide is 26,038.)

2009 National Household Travel Survey - Wisconsin Add-On

The Wisconsin add-on survey supplements the 2009 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) with additional household samples and detailed travel behavior for an assigned travel day. The Federal Highway Administration and Wisconsin Department of Transportation conducted the survey from March 2008 through May 2009. It collected detailed information on travel behavior nationwide, as well as data on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of households. State transportation departments and metropolitan planning agencies had the opportunity to purchase extra household samples as part of the NHTS add-on program. These additional samples, along with national samples collected in the add-on areas, are compiled for use in transportation planning, forecasting, and research. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation participated in the NHTS add-on program and received a total of 1,707 household samples in Wisconsin. (The total number of household samples nationwide is 26,000.)

2017 National Household Travel Survey - Wisconsin Add-On

The Wisconsin add-on survey supplements the 2017 National Household Travel Survey (NHTS) with additional household samples and detailed travel behavior for an assigned travel day. The Federal Highway Administration and Wisconsin Department of Transportation conducted the survey. The NHTS ran from April 19, 2016, through April 25, 2017. It collected detailed information on travel behavior nationwide, as well as data on the demographic and socioeconomic composition of households. State transportation departments and metropolitan planning agencies had the opportunity to purchase extra household samples as part of the NHTS add-on program. These additional samples, along with national samples collected in the add-on areas, are compiled for use in transportation planning, forecasting, and research. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation participated in the NHTS add-on program and received a total of 11,675 household samples in Wisconsin. (The total number of household samples nationwide is 129,112.)

1994 Portland Household Travel Survey

The Portland Household Travel Survey was conducted under the auspices of the Oregon Department of Transportation to provide information suitable for gaining an in-depth understanding of the activity and travel behavior of both households in metropolitan areas and the individuals within those households. The first round of surveys collected household activity data from the four metropolitan planning organization areas around Portland, plus three extra counties (Marion, Polk, and Yamhill). A total of 11,762 households participated in this study. Each household member was asked to record any activity that lasted 30 minutes or longer, or any activity that required travel for the specified 48-hour period.

1990 Seattle Household Travel Survey Wave 2

The Seattle Household Travel Survey Wave 2, conducted in 1990, was the second wave in a 10-part longitudinal panel survey of the travel patterns of households in the Puget Sound region of Washington state. The survey series was initiated in 1989 by the Puget Sound Regional Council. Data collection for the second wave took place in the fall of 1990, which included full interviews and travel diaries, as well as some panel refreshment. Demographic and work trip data updates, but no travel diaries, were gathered for 2,023 households in four counties in the Seattle area. The survey relied on the willingness of study area residents to 1) provide demographic information about their household, its members, and its vehicles; 2) document all travel for each household member, aged 15 years or older, for an assigned two-day period; and 3) agree to participate in additional survey waves. After an initial telephone screening, survey participants received mailed travel diaries to aid in documenting travel information for the two-day assessment period. Respondents were instructed to record their mode of transportation, trip purpose, number of passengers, departure and arrival times, ride fare, and parking costs. Demographic information for this study includes age, gender, education, employment status, and household income.
