Generalized symmetry in dynamical gravity

We explore generalized symmetry in the context of nonlinear dynamical gravity. Our basic strategy is to transcribe known results from Yang-Mills theory directly to gravity via the tetrad formalism, which recasts general relativity as a gauge theory of the local Lorentz group. By analogy, we deduce that gravity exhibits a one-form symmetry implemented by an operator U α labeled by a center element α of the Lorentz group and associated with a certain area measured in Planck units. The corresponding charged line operator W ρ is the holonomy in a spin representation ρ, which is the gravitational analog of a Wilson loop. The topological linking of U α and W ρ has an elegant physical interpretation from classical gravitation: the former materializes an exotic chiral cosmic string defect whose quantized conical deficit angle is measured by the latter. We verify this claim explicitly in an AdS-Schwarzschild black hole background. Notably, our conclusions imply that the standard model exhibits a new symmetry of nature at scales below the lightest neutrino mass. More generally, the absence of global symmetries in quantum gravity suggests that the gravitational one-form symmetry is either gauged or explicitly broken. The latter mandates the existence of fermions. Finally, we comment on generalizations to magnetic higher-form or higher-group gravitational symmetries.

Covariance and the hierarchy of frame bundles

This is an essay on the general concept of covariance, and its connection with the structure of the nested set of higher frame bundles over a differentiable manifold. Examples of covariant geometric objects include not only linear tensor fields, densities and forms, but affinity fields, sectors and sector forms, higher order frame fields, etc., often having nonlinear transformation rules and Lie derivatives. The intrinsic, or invariant, sets of forms that arise on frame bundles satisfy the graded Cartan-Maurer structure equations of an infinite Lie algebra. Reduction of these gives invariant structure equations for Lie pseudogroups, and for G-structures of various orders. Some new results are introduced for prolongation of structure equations, and for treatment of Riemannian geometry with higher-order moving frames. The use of invariant form equations for nonlinear field physics is implicitly advocated.

An Experimental Study of the Solubility of Rare Earth Chloride Salts (La, Nd, Er) in HCl Bearing Water Vapor from 350 – 425 °C

In this work, the solubilities of the rare earth chlorides REECl 3 , where REE = (La, Nd, Er), were measured in HCl bearing water vapor from 350 – 425°C with water partial pressures ranging from 8 – 170 bar. Solubility data were fit to the Pitzer-Pabalan quasi-chemical model in order to extract thermodynamic parameters for the formation of the gaseous REE-chloride-water clusters REECl 3 (H 2 O) n . The data show that the solubility of the REE chlorides are orders of magnitude higher than salts such as NaCl or CuCl at low water fugacities, despite their sublimation energies being substantially higher. This enhanced solubility is likely due to the high enthalpy associated with binding a single water molecule to form the species REECl 3 (H 2 O), with derived enthalpies ranging from –378 to –465 kJ/mol. Addition of further water molecules to form higher order clusters (n > 1) involves enthalpy changes of ~ -20 kJ/mol, and are in effect thermodynamically suppressed over the temperature range 350 – 425°C. Despite the enhanced solubility of small REECl 3 water clusters, simulations of boiling processes demonstrate that the REE show highly conservative behavior, partitioning strongly into the dense aqueous phase. Not surprisingly, the presence of phosphates in the system makes this effect even more pronounced, completely immobilizing the REE. This would reduce transport in both the vapor and aqueous phase to negligible levels. However, we suggest that vapor phase transport of the REE may play a significant role in systems having a relatively low partial pressure of water (below the saturation point), where the relatively high stability of the first hydrated REE chloride clusters (REECl 3 (H 2 O) and REECl 3 (H 2 O) 2 ) will give a preference for gas transport of the REE relative to other elements. This can likely happen in systems involving a gas/melt exchange in fumarolic exhalations, where water vapor discharges at relatively low (close to atmospheric) pressures.

Axions, higher-groups, and emergent symmetry

Axions, periodic scalar fields coupled to gauge fields through the instanton density, have a rich variety of higher-form global symmetries. These include a two-form global symmetry, which measures the charge of axion strings. As we review, these symmetries typically combine into a higher-group, a kind of non-abelian structure where symmetries that act on operators of different dimensions, such as points, lines, and strings, are mixed. We use this structure to derive model independent constraints on renormalization group flows that realize theories of axions at long distances. These give universal inequalities on the energy scales where various infrared symmetries emerge. For example, we show that in any UV completion of axion-Yang-Mills, the energy scale at which axion strings can decay is always larger than the mass scale of charged particles.

Error Free Software

A mathematical theory for development of "higher order" software to catch computer mistakes resulted from a Johnson Space Center contract for Apollo spacecraft navigation. Two women who were involved in the project formed Higher Order Software, Inc. to develop and market the system of error analysis and correction. They designed software which is logically error-free, which, in one instance, was found to increase productivity by 600%. USE.IT defines its objectives using AXES -- a user can write in English and the system converts to computer languages. It is employed by several large corporations.

Olefin oligomerization by main group Ga 3+ and Zn 2+ single site catalysts on SiO 2

In heterogeneous catalysis, olefin oligomerization is typically performed on immobilized transition metal ions, such as Ni 2+ and Cr 3+ . Here we report that silica-supported, single site catalysts containing immobilized, main group Zn 2+ and Ga 3+ ion sites catalyze ethylene and propylene oligomerization to an equilibrium distribution of linear olefins with rates similar to that of Ni 2+ . The molecular weight distribution of products formed on Zn 2+ is similar to Ni 2+ , while Ga 3+ forms higher molecular weight olefins. In situ spectroscopic and computational studies suggest that oligomerization unexpectedly occurs by the Cossee-Arlman mechanism via metal hydride and metal alkyl intermediates formed during olefin insertion and β-hydride elimination elementary steps. Initiation of the catalytic cycle is proposed to occur by heterolytic C-H dissociation of ethylene, which occurs at about 250 °C where oligomerization is catalytically relevant. This work illuminates new chemistry for main group metal catalysts with potential for development of new oligomerization processes.

Fabrication of structural components from commercial aluminum alloys using superplastic forming

SPF technology was used to fabricate structural components from the 7475 Al and 8090 Al-Li commercial alloys. Gas-pressurization cycles were established for SPF three-hat stiffener configurations on the basis of uniaxial data and component-geometry considerations. It is established that higher forming rates than the optimum strain rates selected from the uniaxial data for each alloy could be used in the later stages of forming without reducing SPF components' dimensional conformity. Cavitation was precluded through the use of back pressure during forming.

Mitigating Abnormal Grain Growth for Friction Stir Welded Al-Li 2195 Spun Formed Domes

Formability and abnormal grain growth (AGG) are the two major issues that have been encountered for Al alloy spun formed dome development using friction stir welded blanks. Material properties that have significant influence on the formability include forming range and strain hardening exponent. In this study, tensile tests were performed for two 2195 friction stir weld parameter sets at 400 F to study the effects of post weld anneal on the forming range and strain hardening exponent. It was found that the formability can be enhanced by applying a newly developed post weld anneal to heat treat the friction stir welded panels. This new post weld anneal leads to a higher forming range and much improved strain hardening exponent. AGG in the weld nugget is known to cause a significant reduction of ductility and fracture toughness. This study also investigated how AGG may be influenced by the heating rate to the solution heat treatment temperature. After post-weld annealing, friction stir welds were strained to 15% and 39% by compression at 400 F before they were subjected to SHT at 950 F for 1 hour. Salt bath SHT is very effective in reducing the grain size as it helps arrest the onset of AGG and promote normal recrystallization and grain growth. However, heat treating a 18 ft dome using a salt bath is not practical. Efforts are continuing at Marshall Space Flight Center to identify the welding parameters and heat treating parameters that can help mitigate the AGG in the friction stir welds.

Gauging nexus between topological and fracton phases

Coupled layer constructions are a valuable tool for capturing the universal properties of certain interacting quantum phases of matter in terms of the simpler data that characterizes the underlying layers. In the study of fracton phases, the X-Cube model in 3+1D can be realized via such a construction by starting with a stack of 2+1D Toric Codes and turning on a coupling which condenses a composite "particle-string" object. In a recent work [Phys. Rev. B 112, 125124 (2025)], we have demonstrated that in fact, the particle-string can be viewed as a symmetry defect of a topological 1-form symmetry. In this paper, we study the result of gauging this symmetry in depth. We unveil a rich gauging web relating the X-Cube model to symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases protected by a mix of subsystem and higher-form symmetries, subsystem symmetry fractionalization in the 3+1D Toric Code, and non-trivial extensions of topological symmetries by subsystem symmetries. Here, our work emphasizes the importance of topological symmetries in non-topological, geometric phases of matter.

Divergences in hydraulic conductance and anatomical traits of stems and leaves in three temperate tree species coping with drought, N addition and their interactions

Drought and N addition have been shown to affect tree hydraulic traits, but few studies have been made on their interactions across species with different wood types or leaf forms. We examined the responses of hydraulic conductance and xylem anatomical traits of Quercus mongolica (ring-porous with simple-leaves), Fraxinus mandshurica (ring-porous with compound-leaves), and Tilia amurensis (diffuse-porous with simple-leaves) to drought, N addition and their interactions. Drought stress decreased current-year xylem-specific conductivity in stems (Ksx) and leaf hydraulic conductance (Kleaf), but N addition affected Ksx and Kleaf differently among species and watering regimes. These divergent effects were associated with different responses of anatomical traits and leaf forms. Higher mean vessel diameter in stems (Dstem) and lower vessel density in leaves (VDvein) were observed with N addition. The three-way interactive effects of drought, N addition and tree species were significant for most values of anatomical traits. These results were also reflected in large differences in vessel diameter and density among species with different wood types or leaf forms. The two-way interactive effects of drought and N addition were significant on Kleaf and predawn water potential (?pd), but not Ksx, indicating that leaves were more sensitive than stems to a combination of drought stress and N addition. Our results provide mechanistic insight into the variable responses of xylem water transport to the interactions of drought and N availability.

2-Group global symmetries and anomalies in six-dimensional quantum field theories

We examine six-dimensional quantum field theories through the lens of higher-form global symmetries. Every Yang-Mills gauge theory in six dimensions, with field strength ƒ (2) , naturally gives rise to a continuous 1-form global symmetry associated with the 2-form instanton current J (2) ~ * Tr (ƒ (2) $\wedge$ ƒ (2) ). We show that suitable mixed anomalies involving the gauge field ƒ (2) and ordinary 0-form global symmetries, such as flavor or Poincaré symmetries, lead to continuous 2-group global symmetries, which allow two flavor currents or two stress tensors to fuse into the 2-form current J (2) . We discuss several features of 2-group symmetry in six dimensions, many of which parallel the four-dimensional case. The majority of six-dimensional supersymmetric conformal field theories (SCFTs) and little string theories have infrared phases with non-abelian gauge fields. We show that the mixed anomalies leading to 2-group symmetries can be present in little string theories, but that they are necessarily absent in SCFTs. This allows us to establish a previously conjectured algorithm for computing the ’t Hooft anomalies of most SCFTs from the spectrum of weakly-coupled massless particles on the tensor branch of these theories. We then apply this understanding to prove that the a -type Weyl anomaly of all SCFTs with a tensor branch must be positive, a > 0.

Variations in Creep Performance of P92 Steel Within Its Composition Range: Influence of N Solubility

Underspecified composition ranges often lead to alloys with unpredictable mechanical performance. To better understand the changes in microstructure and mechanical performance associated with variations of key elements, three versions of P92 are formulated within, or close to, the specified allowable for N, B, and C ranges. Chromium and Si are also varied to influence N solubility. Different service conditions (i.e., temperature and stress) are explored. It is observed that >80% decrease in creep life occurs at 625 °C and 155 MPa for the highest B and N containing alloy. Multiscale characterization reveals key changes due to the trace element variation. The high B and N containing alloy forms deleterious BN precipitates with morphology that promotes crack nucleation and damage accumulation, but this alloy additionally forms higher fractions of beneficial MX precipitates. The alloy with the lowest B and N concentrations but greater C content shows the best creep performance—a consequence of the refined M 23 C 6 carbide precipitate population and the absence of large-scale inclusions or BN precipitates. Calculations of creep activation energy reveal that the high B and N containing alloy is more prone to damage accumulation which causes an early onset of accelerating creep and greater minimum creep rate.

Spatiotemporal characterization of cerium monoxide in laser ablation plasmas using spectrally-resolved fast-gated imaging

The impact of oxidation chemistry on the emission characteristics and spatial structure of laser-produced Ce metal plasmas was investigated using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and time-resolved fast-gated imaging employing narrowband optical filters. Images of the plasma emission show that CeO coexists with atomic species in the periphery and vortex ring of the plasma plume. Image processing was also applied to combine independent monochromatic images of the plasma emission into a single merged image, culminating in a timelapse on the spatiotemporal evolution of atomic and molecular species within the plasma plume. The formation of CeO species was observed to proceed faster for plasmas generated in atmospheres containing larger concentrations of oxygen based on ratios of CeO-to-atomic emission intensities. Furthermore, these same ratios were shown to plateau and decrease at later times (≥25 μs), potentially indicating the depletion of CeO number densities in the plasma as the monoxide undergoes reactions to form higher polyatomic oxides. Altogether, these results provide fundamental insights into the chemical dynamics and intermixing between plasma-gas species in laser ablation cerium plasmas, advancing our understanding on optical signatures of nuclear-relevant materials to enable in-field measurement capabilities.

Generalized Hall conductivities in local commuting projector models: Generalized symmetries and protected surface modes

Hall conductivities are important characterizations of phases of matter. It is known that nonzero Hall conductivities are difficult to realize in local commuting projector lattice models due to no-go theorems in (2+1)⁢D. In this work we construct local commuting projector models in (2+1)⁢D and (3+1)⁢D with nonzero generalized Hall conductivities for ordinary and higher-form continuous symmetries on tensor product Hilbert space of finite local dimension. The model is given by a standard ℤ 𝑁 toric code, but the symmetries do not admit expression in terms of on-site charge operators. The symmetry do not have local charges or currents on the lattice in the absence of boundaries, but there is still a notion of Hall conductivities that coincide with the continuum field theories. We construct protected gapless boundaries of the lattice models using modified Villain formalism. The generalized Hall conductivities are computed by surface currents as well as bulk flux insertion and many-body Chern number.

Piezosuperconductivity: Novel effects in noncentrosymmetric superconductors

Here we study effects in noncentrosymmetric superconductors arising from their unique coupling of Cooper-pair condensate and elasticity. We show that although the much discussed Lifshitz coupling is not observable in a uniform bulk state, it strikingly endows dislocations with a fractional magnetic flux. We also predict a generation of voltage-free strain by a DC current in a P- and T-breaking Josephson junction. Viewing superconductors through the lens of higher-form symmetries we identify the Lifshitz coupling as a chemical potential for the approximately conserved winding number, drawing an analogy with pyroelectric insulators.
