Electronic, magnetic, and structural properties of NiFeMnAl

Abstract Half-metallic Heusler compounds have been extensively studied in the recent years, both experimentally and theoretically, for potential applications in spin-based electronics. Here, we present the results of a combined theoretical and experimental study of the quaternary Heusler compound NiFeMnAl. Our calculations indicate that this material is half-metallic in the ground state and maintains its half-metallic electronic structure under a considerable range of external hydrostatic pressure and biaxial strain. NiFeMnAl crystallizes in the regular cubic Heusler structure, and exhibits ferromagnetic alignment. The practical feasibility of the proposed system is confirmed in the experimental section of this work. More specifically, a bulk ingot of NiFeMnAl was synthesized in A2 type disordered cubic structure using arc melting. It shows a high Curie temperature of about 468 K and a saturation magnetization of 2.3 μ B / f .u . The measured magnetization value is smaller than the one calculated for the ordered structure. This discrepancy is likely due to the A2 type atomic disorder, as demonstrated by our calculations. We hope that the presented results may be useful for researchers working on practical applications of spin-based electronics.

Electronic and magnetic properties of iridium-based novel Heusler alloys

We report half-metallicity and magnetism including exchange splitting are the most significant physical parameters to predict and design a candidate material for spintronic applications. We report here an ab-initio investigation on chemical formation and dynamical stability along with electronic structure and magnetic properties of Ir 2 Cr (Si, Ge) and IrRhCr (Si, Ge) Heusler alloys. The negative formation and cohesive energies with positive phonon dispersions confirm the stabilities of these alloys. Electronic structure calculations reveal that Ir 2 Cr (Si, Ge) and IrRhCrSi alloys are half-metallic ferromagnets with unprecedented exchange splitting. In addition, IrRhCrGe also shows semi-metallic nature. All of these materials follow Slater Pauling rule with large magnetic moments and 100% spin-polarization. With Cr bearing the majority of the local magnetic moment and exchange splitting, a ferromagnetic state is more stable than a nonmagnetic state. The electronic charge distribution and population analysis confirm mixed ionic and covalent bonding. The magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy, with the easy magnetization along the [1 1 1] direction, is significantly high in Ir 2 CrGe. Elastic constants such as shear (G), bulk (B), Young’s moduli, and Poisson’s ratio indicate that the IrRhCrSi and IrRhCrGe alloys are mechanically stable, and Ir 2 CrSi and Ir 2 CrGe are mechanically unstable. The Pugh’s (B/G) and Poisson’s ratios confirm that the stable alloys are ductile.

Strain induced electronic structure, and magnetic and structural properties in quaternary Heusler alloys ZrRhTiZ (Z = Al, In)

In this work, electronic structure, and magnetic and structural properties of quaternary Heusler alloys ZrRhTiZ (Z = Al, In) have been analyzed from first principles calculations. The ferromagnetic ground state and thermodynamical stability of these compounds are supported by relative total energies, and by derived formation and cohesive energies, respectively. The investigated Curie temperatures of the compounds exceed room temperature indicating that these compounds are promising candidates for beyond room temperature spintronics and magneto-electronics applications. Both compounds follow the Slater-Pauling 18 electron rule and exhibit half-metallic ferromagnetic behavior with magnetic moments of 2 μB with 100% spin polarization in one spin channel at the Fermi-level. The effect of uniform strain on half-metallicity of these compounds inverts the band gap from one spin channel to another spin channel with a mixed spin (magnetic moment) regime that can be mapped to an exchange bias like effect observed in some of the magnetic Heusler compounds. The half metallic ferromagnetic behavior is retained within –2 to 2% strain contrasting with the anomalous spin flip in –1% and 1% strain in ZrRhTiZ (Z = Al, In).

Electronic band structure and magnetism of CoFeV 0.5 Mn 0.5 Si

Half-metallic Heusler alloys have attracted significant attention due to their potential application in spin-transport-based devices. We have synthesized one such alloy, CoFeV 0.5 Mn 0.5 Si, using arc melting and high-vacuum annealing at 600 °C for 24 hours. First principles calculation indicates that CoFeV 0.5 Mn 0.5 Si shows a nearly half-metallic band structure with a degree of spin polarization of about 93%. In addition, this value can be enhanced by the application of tensile strain. The room temperature x-ray diffraction patterns are indexed with the cubic crystal structure without secondary phases. The annealed sample shows ferromagnetic order with the Curie temperature well above room temperature ( T c = 657 K) and a saturation magnetization of about 92 emu/g. Our results indicate that CoFeV 0.5 Mn 0.5 Si has a potential for room temperature spin-transport-based devices.

Designed metal-insulator transition in low-symmetry magnetic intermetallics

Compounds exhibiting half-metallic character and metal-insulator transitions draw considerable attention in condensed-matter and materials physics due to their potential use in spintronics. Here we show that specific electron doping plays a crucial role in tailoring thermodynamic, structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of materials derived from low-symmetry magnetic intermetallics, exemplified on triclinic Mn 4 Al 11 . Upon chemical doping of Al by Ge, we predict improved phase stability and adherence to a generalized “18-n rule” governing closed-shell configurations in intermetallic with narrow bandgaps. Validating experiments include measurements of phase stability and electronic transport properties of electron-doped Mn 4 Al 10 Ge that crystallizes in the Mn 4 Al 11 -type structure, confirming the bandgap opening as predicted by chemical analysis and density-functional theory. Here we also demonstrate theoretically that hydrostatic pressure enhances the predicted half-metallic gap in the up-spin channel, which leads to a ferrimagnetic-to-ferromagnetic transition driven by Mn-Mn charge ordering in the Mn 4 Al 11 parent. We have also discussed the generality of our approach in predicting the design of other classes of intermetallics including half and full Heusler compounds.

Near-half-metallic state in the half-Heusler PtMnSb film on a III-V substrate

The interplay between half-metallic ferromagnetism and spin-orbit coupling within the inversion-symmetry-broken structure of half Heuslers provides an ideal platform for various spintronics functionalities. Taking advantage of good lattice matching, it is highly desired to epitaxially integrate promising Heuslers into III-V semiconductor-based devices. PtMnSb is one of the first half Heuslers predicted to be an above-room-temperature half-metal with large spin orbit coupling, however, its half-metallicity and potential as a spintronics material has remained elusive due to lack of high quality samples. Here, in this study, we demonstrate epitaxial growth of single crystal PtMnSb(001) film on GaSb(001) substrates using molecular beam epitaxy. Direct observation of the band structure via angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and many-body perturbation theory within the quasi-particle self-consistent GW approximation (QPGW) reveal that PtMnSb hosts rather a near-half-metallic state with both spin bands crossing the Fermi level and with high spin polarization over 90%. Temperature dependence of magnetization also shows an anomalous enhancement below 60 K, which can be associated with the development of such a near-half-metallic state at low temperatures. Epitaxial growth of high crystalline PtMnSb on a III-V paves the way for systematic clarification of its spin transport properties with fine-tuning of strain in heterostructure devices.

Covalent 2D Cr 2 Te 3 ferromagnet

To broaden the scope of van der Waals 2D magnets, we report the synthesis and magnetism of covalent 2D magnetic Cr 2 Te 3 with a thickness down to one-unit-cell. The 2D Cr 2 Te 3 crystals exhibit robust ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature of 180 K, a large perpendicular anisotropy of 7 × 10 5 J m -3 , and a high coercivity of ~4.6 kG at 20 K. First principles calculations further show a transition from canted to collinear ferromagnetism, a transition from perpendicular to in-plane anisotropy, and emergent half-metallic behavior in atomically-thin Cr 2 Te 3 , suggesting its potential application for injecting carriers with high spin polarization into spintronic devices.

Design of a Stable Heusler Alloy with Switchable Metal-to-Half-Metal Transition at Finite Temperature

We report the electronic structure and metallicity of Si-doped Mn2VGe Heusler alloys within the first-principles density-functional theory framework are discussed. Mn2VGe is found to assume two stable structures at (cubic) lattice constants of 5.7 and 6.05 Å, which are well-separated in energy and correspond to half-metallic (low-spin) and metallic (high-spin) phases, respectively. Substitution of Ge by Si reduces the energy difference between these two phases, which become nearly degenerate at an Si concentration of ≈3.125 at% at zero temperature. The analysis shows that the switching between the high- and low-spin phases for this composition can be triggered via a pressure of 2.8 GPa at 300 K. Si-doped Mn 2 VGe can thus provide an ultrafast, low power, cost-effective materials platform for spintronics applications.

Electronic, magnetic, and optical properties of bulk and (1 1 1)-surfaces of CoMnZnSi quaternary Heusler alloy

The structural stability, electronic structure, and magnetic and optical properties of CoMnZnSi quaternary Heusler alloy (QHA) in the bulk and (1 1 1)-slab forms have been investigated by performing density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Formation and cohesive energies, and elastic constants confirm that the bulk CoMnZnSi is chemically and mechanically stable at an equilibrium lattice parameter of 5.81 Å. The calculated elastic constants also indicate that this QHA has ductile and anisotropic features. We investigate and discuss the bonding behavior from charge density distribution and density of states. Furthermore, these calculations in the bulk phase show a perfect half-metallic behavior with an integer value of magnetic moment (4 µB) and a large spin-flip gap of 0.39 eV. On the other hand, the Co (1 1 1) and Si (1 1 1)-slabs exhibit semi-metallic nature at the Fermi level. These results indicate that CoMnZnSi qualifies for spintronic applications. In the bulk and Co (1 1 1), Zn (1 1 1), and Si (1 1 1)-surfaces, the magnetic moment of Co and Mn atoms are ferromagnetically aligned, while the ferrimagnetic alignment of Co with Mn has been found in Mn (1 1 1)-surface. We also investigate the optimal conductivity, dielectric functions, reflectivity, absorption coefficient, refractive index, and loss function to understand the underlying optical properties of this alloy.

Effect of Ni deposition on CrI 3 monolayer: First-principles study

In our recent experimental work, we demonstrated that Ni thin film deposition can be used to tune the surface magnetic states in bulk CrI 3 . Here, we present the results of a computational study of Ni deposition on a CrI 3 monolayer. In particular, we compare structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of three different systems: a pristine CrI 3 monolayer, a CrI 3 monolayer with partial Ni coverage, and a CrI 3 monolayer with full Ni coverage. The corresponding cells used in our calculations are Cr 2 I 6 , Cr 2 I 6 Ni 1 , and Cr 2 I 6 Ni 3 . In Cr 2 I 6 Ni 1 , the Ni atom is positioned over the hollow site, which corresponds to the lowest energy configuration. In Cr 2 I 6 Ni 3 , the three Ni atoms are positioned over the single hollow site, and over the two Cr sites. Our calculations indicate that the partial coverage of CrI 3 monolayer with Ni retains the semiconducting nature of the parent compound, but results in a strong reduction of the energy band gap. At the same time, the full coverage of CrI 3 monolayer with Ni results in a metallic transition, with a highly spin-polarized (possibly half-metallic) electronic structure. The magnetic alignment of the CrI 3 monolayer with the deposited Ni is ferrimagnetic, due to the anti-aligned magnetic moments of Cr and Ni atoms. While the partial coverage of the CrI 3 monolayer with Ni has a moderate impact on the lattice parameter of the parent compound, full coverage by Ni results in a significant increase of the lattice constant. For both partial and full coverages, the lowest energy configuration corresponds to the Ni atoms being approximately aligned with the out-of-plane coordinate of the surface iodine layer. In addition, in the full coverage mode, the Cr layer exhibits a significant shift away from the Ni atoms, effectively “detaching” the Ni / I atomic layer from the rest of the cell.

Ferromagnetic Cr 4 PtGa 17 : A Half-Heusler-Type Compound with a Breathing Pyrochlore Lattice

Here, we describe the crystal structure and elementary magnetic properties of a previously unreported ternary intermetallic compound, Cr 4 PtGa 17 , which crystallizes in a rhombohedral unit cell in the noncentrosymmetric space group R3m. The crystal structure is closely related to those of XYZ half-Heusler compounds, where X, Y, and Z are reported to be single elements only, occupying three different face-centered-cubic sublattices. The new material, Cr 4 PtGa 17 , can be most straightforwardly illustrated by writing the formula as (PtGa 2 )(Cr 4 Ga 14 )Ga (X = PtGa 2 , Y = Cr 4 Ga 14 , Z = Ga); that is, the X and Y sites are occupied by clusters instead of single elements. The magnetic Cr occupies a breathing pyrochlore lattice. Ferromagnetic ordering is found below T C ~ 61 K, by both neutron diffraction and magnetometer studies, with a small, saturated moment of ~0.25 μ B /Cr observed at 2 K, making Cr 4 PtGa 17 the first ferromagnetically ordered material with a breathing pyrochlore lattice. A magnetoresistance of ~140% was observed at 2 K. DFT calculations suggest that the material has a nearly half-metallic electronic structure. The new material, Cr 4 PtGa 17 , the first realization of both a half-Heusler-type structure and a breathing pyrochlore lattice, might pave a new way to achieve novel types of half-Heusler compounds.

Valence band electronic structure of the van der Waals ferromagnetic insulators: VI 3 and CrI 3

Ferromagnetic van der Waals (vdW) insulators are of great scientific interest for their promising applications in spintronics. It has been indicated that in the two materials within this class, CrI 3 and VI 3 , the magnetic ground state, the band gap, and the Fermi level could be manipulated by varying the layer thickness, strain or doping. To understand how these factors impact the properties, a detailed understanding of the electronic structure would be required. However, the experimental studies of the electronic structure of these materials are still very sparse. Here, we present the detailed electronic structure of CrI 3 and VI 3 measured by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Our results show a band-gap of the order of 1 eV, sharply contrasting some theoretical predictions such as Dirac half-metallicity and metallic phases, indicating that the intra-atomic interaction parameter (U) and spin-orbit coupling (SOC) were not properly accounted for in the calculations. We also find significant differences in the electronic properties of these two materials, in spite of similarities in their crystal structure. In CrI 3 , the valence band maximum is dominated by the I 5p, whereas in VI 3 it is dominated by the V 3d derived states. Our results represent valuable input for further improvements in the theoretical modeling of these systems.

Pressure induced modification of electronic and magnetic properties of MnCrNbAl and MnCrTaAl

Spin-gapless semiconductor (SGS) is a new class of material that has been studied recently for potential applications in spintronics. This material behaves as an insulator for one spin channel, and as a gapless semiconductor for the opposite spin. In this work, we present results of a computational study of two quaternary Heusler alloys, MnCrNbAl and MnCrTaAl that have been recently reported to exhibit spin-gapless semiconducting electronic structure. In particular, using density functional calculations we analyze the effect of external pressure on electronic and magnetic properties of these compounds. It is shown that while these two alloys exhibit nearly SGS behavior at optimal lattice constants and at negative pressure (expansion), they are half-metals at equilibrium, and magnetic semiconductors at larger lattice constant. At the same time, reduction of the unit cell volume has a detrimental effect on electronic properties of these materials, by modifying the exchange splitting of their electronic structure and ultimately destroying their half-metallic/semiconducting behavior. Thus, our results indicate that both MnCrNbAl and MnCrTaAl may be attractive for practical device applications in spin-based electronics, but a potential compression of the unit cell volume (e.g. in thin-film applications) should be avoided.

Disentangling electronic, lattice, and spin dynamics in the chiral helimagnet Cr 1/3 NbS 2

We investigate the static and ultrafast magneto-optical response of the hexagonal chiral helimagnet Cr 1/3 NbS 2 above and below the helimagnetic ordering temperature. The presence of a magnetic easy plane contained within the crystallographic $ab$-plane is confirmed, while degenerate optical pump-probe experiments reveal significant differences in the dynamic between the parent, NbS 2 , and Cr-intercalated compounds. Time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect measurements show a two-step demagnetization process, where an initial, subpicosecond relaxation and subsequent buildup (τ > 50ps) in the demagnetization dynamic scale similarly with increasing pump fluence. Despite theoretical evidence for partial gapping of the minority spin channel, suggestive of possible half-metallicity in Cr 1/3 NbS 2 , such a long demagnetization dynamic likely results from spin-lattice relaxation as opposed to minority state blocking. However, comparison of the two-step demagnetization process in Cr 1/3 NbS 2 with other 3d intercalated transition metal dichalcogenides reveals a behavior that is unexpected from conventional spin-lattice relaxation, and may be attributed to the complicated interaction of local moments with itinerant electrons in this material system.

High spin polarization in the disordered quaternary Heusler alloy FeMnVGa

Here in this paper, we report the successful synthesis of a Fe-based highly spin-polarized quaternary Heusler alloy FeMnVGa and its structural, magnetic, and transport properties probed through different experimental methods and theoretical techniques. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations performed on different types of structures reveal that the structure with Ga at 4a, V at 4b, Mn at 4c, and Fe at 4d (space group F$\bar{4}$3m) possess minimum energy among all the ordered variants. Ab initio simulations in the most stable ordered structure show that the compound is a ferromagnet having a large spin-polarization (89.9%). Neutron diffraction reveals that the compound crystallizes in disordered type-2 structure (space group Fm$\bar{3}$m) in which Ga occupies at 4a, V 4b and Fe/Mn occupy 4c/4d sites with 50:50 proportions. The structural disorder is further confirmed by x-ray diffraction, extended x-ray absorption fine structure, 57 Fe Mössbauer spectrometry results, and DFT calculations. Magnetization studies suggest that the compound orders ferromagnetically below T C ~ 293 K and the saturation magnetization follows the Slater-Pauling rule. Mössbauer spectrometry, along with neutron diffraction, suggest that Mn is the major contributor to the total magnetism in the compound, consistent with the theoretical calculations, which also indicates that spin polarization remains high (81.3%), even in the presence of such large atomic disorder. The robustness of the half-metallic ferromagnetic (HMF) property in the presence of disorder is a quite unique characteristic over other reported HMF in literature and makes this compound quite promising for spintronics applications.

4 d element induced improvement of structural disorder and development of weakly reentrant spin-glass behavior in NiRuMnSn

The pursuit of efficient spin polarization in quaternary Heusler alloys with the general formula XX'YZ (where X, X', and Y are transition metals and Z is a p-block element) has been a subject of significant scientific interest. While previous studies showed that isoelectronic substitution of a 4d element in place of a 3d element in quaternary Heusler alloys improves the half-metallic ferromagnetic characteristics, our research here, on the quaternary Heusler alloy NiRuMnSn, reveals a strikingly different scenario. In this study, we present a detailed structural analysis of the material using x-ray absorption fine structure and neutron diffraction techniques which confirms the formation of a single-phase compound with 50:50 site disorder between Ni and Ru atoms at 4c and 4d sites. Contrary to expectations, our density functional theory calculations suggest a considerable decrease in spin polarization even in the ordered structure. Additionally, we report on the compound's exceptional behavior, displaying a rare reentrant spin-glass property below ~ 60 K, a unique and intriguing feature for quaternary Heusler-type compounds.

Half-Metal Spin Filter for Highly Polarized Emission from GaAs Photocathodes

GaAs-based photocathodes are one of the major sources of spin-polarized electrons and are crucial for the upcoming Electron-Ion collider experiments which includes study of proton spin and spin parity violation in the standard model. The theoretical polarization limit in unstrained GaAs photocathodes is 50 % but only 35 % is routinely achieved in experiments. Spin selective filtering allows to boost the spin polarization beyond the 50 % theoretical limit. In this work, first-principle electronic calculations using standard Density Functional Theory are performed to predict possible Heusler alloy half-metal candidates to be used as spin-filter. Simulations are also performed to investigate the half-metallicity as function of the magnetic spin direction. Several devices are experimentally fabricated using dedicated Molecular Beam Epitaxy growth system. We implemented Quantum Efficiency and Polarization testing of these half-metal/GaAs heterostructures using a dedicated Mott polarimeter system. Photoemission can also be seen on magnetically switching the spin-filter direction accompanied by a change in sign of the asymmetry which is a qualitative proof of the spin-filtering effect.

First-Principles Calculations of the Structural, Electronic, Optical, and Mechanical Properties of 21 Pyrophosphate Crystals

Pyrophosphate crystals have a wide array of applications in industrial and biomedical fields. However, fundamental understanding of their electronic structure, optical, and mechanical properties is still scattered and incomplete. In the present research, we report a comprehensive theoretical investigation of 21 pyrophosphates A 2 M (H 2 P 2 O 7 ) 2 •2H 2 O with either triclinic or orthorhombic crystal structure. The molecule H 2 P 2 O 7 is the dominant molecular unit, whereas A = (K, Rb, NH 4 , Tl), M = (Zn, Cu, Mg, Ni, Co, Mn), and H 2 O stand for the cation elements, transition metals, and the water molecules, respectively. The electronic structure, interatomic bonding, partial charge distribution, optical properties, and mechanical properties are investigated by first-principles calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). Most of these 21 crystals are theoretically investigated for the first time. The calculated results show a complex interplay between A, M, H 2 P 2 O 7 , and H 2 O, resulting in either metallic, half-metallic, or semi-conducting characteristics. The novel concept of total bond order density (TBOD) is used as a single quantum mechanical metric to characterize the internal cohesion of these crystals to correlate with the calculated properties, especially the mechanical properties. This work provides a large database for pyrophosphate crystals and a road map for potential applications of a wider variety of phosphates.
