A new approach to data management and its impact on frequency control requirements

A new approach to data management consisting of spacecraft and data/information autonomy and its impact on frequency control requirements is presented. An autonomous spacecraft is capable of functioning without external intervention for up to 72 hr by enabling the sensors to make observations, maintaining its health and safety, and by using logical safety modes when anomalies occur. Data/information are made autonomous by associating all relevant ancillary data such as time, position, attitude, and sensor identification with the data/information record of an event onboard the spacecraft. This record is so constructed that the record of the event can be physically identified in a complete and self-contained record that is independent of all other data. All data within a packet will be time tagged to the needed accuracy, and the time markings from packet to packet will be coherent to a UTC time scale.

Privacy-Protected Simultaneous Provision of Energy and Primary Frequency Control Reserve

This paper investigates a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model for simultaneous scheduling of energy and primary frequency control reserve. Given the model’s unique structure and growing concerns about privacy, we adopt Dantzig-Wolfe Decomposition (DWD) algorithm to solve the problem in a decentralized fashion while obfuscating the privacy of the energy and reserve resources. Additionally, we present a novel criterion for checking the model’s feasibility. Finally, simulation results are given and discussed.

Spectrophone stabilized laser with line center offset frequency control

Continuous offset tuning of a frequency stabilized CW gas laser is achieved by using a spectrophone filled with the same gas as the laser for sensing a dither modulation, detecting a first or second derivative of the spectrophone output with a lock-in amplifier, the detected output of which is integrated, and applying the integrator output as a correction signal through a circuit which adds to the dither signal from an oscillator a dc offset that is adjusted with a potentiometer to a frequency offset from the absorption line center of the gas, but within the spectral linewidth of the gas. Tuning about that offset frequency is achieved by adding a dc value to the detected output of the dither modulation before integration using a potentiometer.

Frequency control circuit for all-digital phase-lock loops

Phase-lock loop references all its operations to fixed high-frequency service clock operating at highest speed which digital circuits permit. Wide-range control circuit provides linear control of frequency of reference signal. It requires only two counters in combination with control circuit consisting only of flip-flop and gate.

Anderson, T. O.

Frequency-controlled voltage regulator

Converting input ac to higher frequency reduce size and weight and makes possible unique kind of regulation. Since conversion frequency is above range of human hearing, supply generated on audible noise. It also exploits highfrequency conversion features to regulate its output voltage in novel way. Circuit is inherently short-circuit proof.

Frequency Control and Disturbance Containment Using Grid-Forming Embedded Storage Networks

The paper presents a distributed approach for operating a network of inverter-based energy storage resources embedded in a bulk power system. Departing from their traditional role of steady-state reserves, the storage assets in the network are utilized as frequency-responsive resources shaping system dynamics. The power electronics converter systems interfacing the storage resources are equipped with local controllers designed to respond under transient disturbances. To this end, a safety-constrained distributed control strategy is explored. The paper compares the performance of converter-interfaced grid-forming and grid-following storage networks for fast frequency control and disturbance containment/localization. Sensitivity studies are performed to study the impact of storage size, steady-state dispatch, and controller design on dynamic performance. The findings are presented through case studies with results from the IEEE test systems.

Phase-lock loop frequency control and the dropout problem

Technique automatically sets the frequency of narrow band phase-lock loops within automatic lock-in-range. It presets a phase-lock loop to a desired center frequency with a closed loop electronic frequency discriminator and holds the phase-lock loop to that center frequency until lock is achieved.

Demonstration of frequency control and CW diode laser injection control of a titanium-doped sapphire ring laser with no internal optical elements

Theoretical and experimental frequency narrowing studies of a Ti:sapphire ring laser with no intracavity optical elements are reported. Frequency narrowing has been achieved using a birefringent filter between a partially reflecting reverse wave suppressor mirror and the ring cavity output mirror. Results of CW diode laser injection seeding are reported.

Bair, Clayton H.

Minicomputer-controlled frequency generator

Extremely-accurate and low-phase-noise frequency generator varies oscillator frequency as predetermined function of time. System could be used: (a) to automatically vary transmission frequencies in accordance with seasonal and diurnal changes in ionospheric conditions, (b) as automatic tuner for heterodyne receivers, or (c) as control element for phase-locked telemetry receivers.

Winkelstein, R. A.

Automatic frequency control of voltage-controlled oscillators

Optical-capacitive coupling is used for isolation of control voltages, such as the high-voltage level of a klystron control electrode that is not referenced to ground, to serve as error voltages referenced to system ground so that the magnitude and sense of correction may be transferred.

Improvement in the control aspect of laser frequency stabilization for SUNLITE project

Flight Electronics Division of Langley Research Center is developing a spaceflight experiment called the Stanford University and NASA Laser In-Space Technology (SUNLITE). The objective of the project is to explore the fundamental limits on frequency stability using an FM laser locking technique on a Nd:YAG non-planar ring (free-running linewidth of 5 KHz) oscillator in the vibration free, microgravity environment of space. Compact and automated actively stabilized terahertz laser oscillators will operate in space with an expected linewidth of less than 3 Hz. To implement and verify this experiment, NASA engineers have designed and built a state of the art, space qualified high speed data acquisition system for measuring the linewidth and stability limits of a laser oscillator. In order to achieve greater stability and better performance, an active frequency control scheme requiring the use of a feedback control loop has been applied. In the summer of 1991, the application of control theory in active frequency control as a frequency stabilization technique was investigated. The results and findings were presented in 1992 at the American Control Conference in Chicago, and have been published in Conference Proceedings. The main focus was to seek further improvement in the overall performance of the system by replacing the analogue controller by a digital algorithm.
