Mass of a weakly measured photon

Bohmian mechanics has garnered significant attention as an interpretation of quantum theory since the paradigmatic experiments which inferred the average trajectories of photons in the nonrelativistic regime. These experiments were largely motivated by Wiseman's formulation of Bohmian mechanics, which grounded these trajectories in weak measurements. Recently, Wiseman's framework was extended to the relativistic regime by expressing the velocity field of single photons in terms of weak values of the photon energy and momentum. Here, we propose an operational, weak value-based definition for the Bohmian “local mass” of relativistic single particles. For relativistic wave functions satisfying the scalar Klein-Gordon equation, this mass coincides with the effective mass defined by de Broglie in his relativistic pilot-wave theory, a quantity closely connected with the quantum potential that is responsible for Bohmian trajectory self-bending and the anomalous photoelectric effect. Here, we demonstrate the relationship between the photon trajectories and the mass in an interferometric setup.

Signatures of rotating black holes in quantum superposition

A new approach for operationally studying the effects of spacetime in quantum superpositions of semiclassical states has recently been proposed by some of the authors. This approach was applied to the case of a (2+1)-dimensional Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) black hole in a superposition of masses, where it was shown that a two-level system interacting with a quantum field residing in the spacetime exhibits resonant peaks in its response at certain values of the superposed masses. Here, we extend this analysis to a mass-superposed rotating BTZ black hole, considering the case where the two-level system corotates with the black hole in a superposition of trajectories. We find similar resonances in the detector response function at rational ratios of the superposed outer horizon radii, specifically in the case where the ratio of the inner and outer horizons is fixed. This suggests a connection with Bekenstein’s seminal conjecture concerning the discrete horizon spectra of black holes in quantum gravity, generalized to the case of rotating black holes. Here, our results further indicate that deeper insights into quantum-gravitational phenomena may be accessible via tools in relativistic quantum information and curved spacetime quantum field theory.

Broad betacoronavirus neutralization by a stem helix–specific human antibody

Targeting a range of betacoranaviruses In the past 20 years, three highly pathogenic β-coronaviruses have crossed from animals to humans, including the most recent: severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). A spike protein that decorates these viruses has an S1 domain that binds host cell receptors and an S2 domain that fuses the viral and cell membranes to allow cell entry. The S1 domain is the target of many neutralizing antibodies but is more genetically variable than S2, and antibodies can exert selective pressure, leading to resistant variants. Pinto et al . identified five monoclonal antibodies that interact with a helix in the S2 domain. The most broadly neutralizing antibody inhibited all β-coronavirus subgenera and reduced viral burden in hamsters infected with SARS-CoV-2. —VV

Switchable system for high-salinity brine desalination and fractional precipitation

A saline feed stream flows into a liquid-liquid extraction system; and a volatile organic solvent flows through a main compressor. The compressed volatile organic solvent then flows through a solvent regenerator, which can be a heat exchanger or a combination of a vaporization device and a condenser, to cool the volatile organic solvent. The cooled volatile organic solvent in liquid phase then flows into the liquid-liquid extraction system, where the saline feed stream contacts the volatile organic solvent to selectively extract water from the saline feed stream into the volatile organic solvent, producing a concentrated brine and an organic-rich mixture of water and the volatile organic solvent. The organic-rich mixture flows from the liquid-liquid extraction system into the solvent regenerator, where the organic-rich mixture is heated to produce an organic-rich vapor and desalinated water; and the organic-rich vapor is recycled as volatile organic solvent back into the liquid-liquid extraction system.
