High-temperature 205 Tl decay clarifies 205 Pb dating in early Solar System

Radioactive nuclei with lifetimes on the order of millions of years can reveal the formation history of the Sun and active nucleosynthesis occurring at the time and place of its birth. Among such nuclei whose decay signatures are found in the oldest meteorites, 205 Pb is a powerful example, as it is produced exclusively by slow neutron captures (the s process), with most being synthesized in asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. However, making accurate abundance predictions for 205 Pb has so far been impossible because the weak decay rates of 205 Pb and 205 Tl are very uncertain at stellar temperatures. To constrain these decay rates, we measured for the first time the bound-state β - decay of fully ionized 205 Tl 81+ , an exotic decay mode that only occurs in highly charged ions. The measured half-life is 4.7 times longer than the previous theoretical estimate and our 10% experimental uncertainty has eliminated the main nuclear-physics limitation. With new, experimentally backed decay rates, we used AGB stellar models to calculate 205 Pb yields. Propagating those yields with basic galactic chemical evolution (GCE) and comparing with the 205 Pb/ 204 Pb ratio from meteorites, we determined the isolation time of solar material inside its parent molecular cloud. We find positive isolation times that are consistent with the other s-process short-lived radioactive nuclei found in the early Solar System. Our results reaffirm the site of the Sun’s birth as a long-lived, giant molecular cloud and support the use of the 205 Pb– 205 Tl decay system as a chronometer in the early Solar System.

Prospects for exotic h → 4 τ decays in single and di-Higgs boson production at the LHC and future hadron colliders

We study the prospects for observing exotic decays of the Standard Model Higgs boson h into light beyond the Standard Model scalars a with mass m a ≲ m h / 2 in the single Higgs and Higgs pair production channels at the high luminosity run of the Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC). Discovery prospects for single Higgs production in the gluon-gluon fusion and vector boson fusion modes with the Higgs boson decaying via the exotic mode h → a a → 4 τ are analyzed at the HL-LHC. The projected sensitivity for exotic Higgs decays in the nonresonant Higgs pair production channel p p → h h → ( h → b b ¯ ) ( h → a a → 4 τ ) → 2 b 4 τ at the HL-LHC and a future s = 100 TeV hadron collider (FCC-hh) are also estimated. Furthermore, we study HL-LHC’s potential reach for the Higgs-strahlung process in the 2 b 4 τ channel, taking into account the contamination from nonresonant Higgs pair production. Finally, the potential reach for resonant Higgs pair production in the 2 b 4 τ channel at the HL-LHC is also explored for several choices of { m H , m a } . Our studies suggest that significant improvements over existing bounds are achievable in several production channels, motivating new dedicated searches for h → a a → 4 τ at the HL-LHC and future colliders. Search for Light Long-Lived Particles in $pp$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV Using Displaced Vertices in the ATLAS Inner Detector

A search for long-lived particles (LLPs) using 140 fb -1 of pp collision data with $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the LHC is presented. The search targets LLPs with masses between 5 and 55 GeV that decay hadronically in the ATLAS inner detector. Benchmark models with LLP pair production from exotic decays of the Higgs boson and models featuring long-lived axionlike particles (ALPs) are considered. No significant excess above the expected background is observed. Upper limits are placed on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to pairs of LLPs, the cross section for ALPs produced in association with a vector boson, and, for the first time, on the branching ratio of the top quark to an ALP and a u/c quark.

Search for decays of the Higgs boson into scalar particles decaying into four or six 𝑏 quarks using 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson 𝐻 into new scalar or pseudoscalar particles that subsequently decay into 𝑏-quarks is presented. The search considers 𝑍⁢𝐻 production with several decay scenarios for the Higgs boson; first to a pair of identical scalars, 𝐻 → 2⁢𝑎 → 4⁢𝑏, second to a pair of scalars with different masses (𝑚 𝑎⁢1 < 𝑚 𝑎⁢2 ), either directly, 𝐻 → 𝑎 1 ⁢𝑎 2 → 4⁢𝑏, or via a longer decay chain, 𝐻 → 𝑎 1 ⁢𝑎 2 → 3⁢𝑎 1 → 6⁢𝑏. The analysis uses proton-proton collision data at $\sqrt{𝑠}$ = 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb −1 . No significant excess above the Standard Model prediction is observed. The search sets upper limits at 95% confidence level on the ratio of the Higgs boson production cross section to the SM prediction times the branching ratio of Higgs bosons decaying into 4⁢𝑏 or 6⁢𝑏, between 4% and 25% for 𝜎⁡(𝑍⁢𝐻)/𝜎 SM ⁡(𝑍⁢𝐻) × ℬ⁡(𝐻→ 2⁢𝑎→ 4⁢𝑏), between 24% and 38% for 𝜎⁡(𝑍⁢𝐻)/𝜎 SM ⁡(𝑍⁢𝐻) × ℬ⁡(𝐻 → 𝑎 1 ⁢𝑎 2 → 4⁢𝑏), and between 10% and 20% for 𝜎⁡(𝑍⁢𝐻)/𝜎 SM ⁡(𝑍⁢𝐻) × ℬ⁡(𝐻→𝑎 1⁢ 𝑎 2 → 3⁢𝑎 1 → 6⁢𝑏), depending on the masses of the scalar particles.

Search for decays of the Higgs boson into a pair of pseudoscalar particles decaying into $b\overline{b}$$\tau$ + $\tau$ - using pp collisions at √s = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

This paper presents a search for exotic decays of the Higgs boson into a pair of new pseudoscalar particles, H → aa, where one pseudoscalar decays into a b-quark pair and the other decays into a $\tau$-lepton pair, in the mass range 12 ≤ m a ≤ 60 GeV. The analysis uses pp collision data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV collected with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb -1 . No significant excess above the Standard Model (SM) prediction is observed. Assuming the SM Higgs boson production cross section, the search sets upper limits at 95% confidence level on the branching ratio of Higgs bosons decaying into $b\overline{b}$$\tau$ + $\tau$ - , $\mathcal{B}$(H → aa → $b\overline{b}$$\tau$ + $\tau$ - ), between 2.2% and 3.9% depending on the pseudoscalar mass.

A search for exotic decays of the 125 GeV Higgs boson into a pair of new spin-0 particles, H → aa, where one decays into a photon pair and the other into a τ-lepton pair, is presented. Hadronic decays of the τ-leptons are considered and reconstructed using a dedicated tagger for collimated τ-lepton pairs. The search uses 140 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of s$$ \sqrt{s} $$ = 13 TeV recorded between 2015 and 2018 by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The search is performed in the mass range of the a boson between 10 GeV and 60 GeV. No significant excess of events is observed above the Standard Model background expectation. Model-independent upper limits at 95% confidence level are set on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson to the γγττ final state, B$$ \mathcal{B} $$(H → aa → γγττ), ranging from 0.2% to 2%, depending on the a-boson mass hypothesis.

Search for light neutral particles decaying promptly into collimated pairs of electrons or muons in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for a dark photon, a new light neutral particle, which decays promptly into collimated pairs of electrons or muons is presented. The search targets dark photons resulting from the exotic decay of the Standard Model Higgs boson, assuming its production via the dominant gluon-gluon fusion mode. The analysis is based on 140 fb -1 of data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. Events with collimated pairs of electrons or muons are analysed and background contributions are estimated using data-driven techniques. No significant excess in the data above the Standard Model background is observed. Upper limits are set at 95% confidence level on the branching ratio of the Higgs boson decay into dark photons between 0.001% and 5%, depending on the assumed dark photon mass and signal model.

Search for light long-lived neutral particles from Higgs boson decays via vector-boson-fusion production from pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search is reported for long-lived dark photons with masses between 0.1 GeV and 15 GeV, from exotic decays of Higgs bosons produced via vector-boson-fusion. Events that contain displaced collimated Standard Model fermions reconstructed in the calorimeter or muon spectrometer are probed. This search uses the full LHC Run 2 (2015–2018) data sample collected in proton–proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 139 fb –1 . Dominant backgrounds from Standard Model processes and non-collision sources are estimated using data-driven techniques. The observed event yields in the signal regions are consistent with the expected background. Upper limits on the Higgs boson to dark photon branching fraction are reported as a function of the dark photon mean proper decay length or of the dark photon mass and the coupling between the Standard Model and the potential dark sector. This search is combined with previous ATLAS searches obtained in the gluon–gluon fusion and WH production modes. A branching fraction above 10% is excluded at 95% CL for a 125 GeV Higgs boson decaying into two dark photons for dark photon mean proper decay lengths between 173 and 1296 mm and mass of 10 GeV.

Proposal for Direct Detection of Ultralight Dark Matter via Charged Lepton Flavor Violation

We propose a dark matter direct-detection strategy using charged particle decays at accelerator-based experiments. If ultralight ( m ϕ ≪ eV ) dark matter has a misalignment abundance, its local field oscillates in time at a frequency set by its mass. If it also couples to flavor-changing neutral currents, rare exotic decays such as μ → e ϕ ′ and τ → e ( μ ) ϕ ′ inherit this modulation. Focusing on such charged lepton flavor-violating decays, we show that sufficient event samples can enable detection of ultralight dark matter candidates at Mu3e, Belle-II, and FCC-ee.

Search for decays of the Higgs boson into pair-produced pseudoscalar particles decaying into τ+τ−τ+τ− using pp collisions at s=13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for a pair of low-mass pseudoscalars a that promptly decay into τ-leptons is presented using 140 fb −1 of proton–proton collision data at 13 TeV centre-of-mass energy recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The result is used to place constraints on exotic decays of the Higgs boson into four τ-leptons, H→aa→τ+τ−τ+τ−. This search focuses on events with either one or two τ-leptons decaying into hadrons and neutrinos, and the remaining three or two τ-leptons decaying into either electron or muon and neutrinos. No significant excess is observed above the expected Standard Model background and upper limits at the 95% confidence level on B(H→aa→τ+τ−τ+τ−) are set ranging from 0.06 to 0.23, depending on the mass ma ranging from 15 to 60 GeV.

Search for long-lived particles produced in association with a Z boson in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for long-lived particles (LLPs) produced in association with a Z boson is presented. The study is performed using data from proton-proton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment during 2016–2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 117 fb -1 . The LLPs are assumed to decay to a pair of standard model quarks that are identified as displaced jets within the CMS tracker system. Triggers and selections based on Z boson decays to electron or muon pairs improve the sensitivity to light LLPs (down to 15 GeV). This search provides sensitivity to beyond the standard model scenarios which predict LLPs produced in association with a Z boson. In particular, the results are interpreted in the context of exotic decays of the Higgs boson to a pair of scalar LLPs (H → SS). The Higgs boson decay branching fraction is constrained to values less than 6% for proper decay lengths of 10–100 mm and for LLP masses between 40 and 55 GeV. In the case of low-mass (≈ 15 GeV) scalar particles that subsequently decay to a pair of b quarks, the search is sensitive to branching fractions B(H → SS) < 20% for proper decay lengths of 10–50 mm. The use of associated production with a Z boson increases the sensitivity to low-mass LLPs of this analysis with respect to gluon fusion searches. In the case of 15 GeV scalar LLPs, the improvement corresponds to a factor of 2 at a proper decay length of 30 mm.

Baryogenesis from a dark first-order phase transition

We present a very minimal model for baryogenesis by a dark first-order phase transition. It employs a new dark SU(2) D gauge group with two doublet Higgs bosons, two lepton doublets, and two singlets. The singlets act as a neutrino portal that transfer the generated asymmetry to the Standard Model. The model predicts ΔN eff = 0.09–0.13 detectable by future experiments as well as possible signals from exotic decays of the Higgs and Z bosons and stochastic gravitational waves.

ALP-assisted strong first-order electroweak phase transition and baryogenesis

Axion-like particles (ALPs) can be naturally lighter than the electroweak scale. We consider an ALP that couples to the Standard Model Higgs to achieve the strong first-order electroweak phase transition. We discuss the two-field dynamics of the phase transition and the associated computation in detail and identify the viable parameter space. The ALP mass can be from the MeV to GeV scale. Baryon asymmetry can be explained by local baryogenesis without violating the current electron and atom electric dipole moment bound in most of the viable parameter space. The viable parameter space can be probed through Higgs exotic decay, rare kaon decay, the electron and atomic electric dipole moment, and the effective number of neutrinos in the cosmic microwave background in the future. The gravitational-wave signal is too weak to be detected.

Charged Higgs search in 2HDM

In this paper, we present a comprehensive study of the collider search limits on the charged Higgses in the four types of Two Higgs Double Models (2HDM). In addition to constraints from flavor physics measurements, we include both the LEP charged Higgs search channels, as well as the LHC search results on the light and heavy charged Higgses. We consider both the conventional charged Higgs search channels of H ± → τν, cs, cb, tb, and the latest search results on the exotic decay channels H ± → AW ± /HW ± . We find that H ± → AW ± /HW ± are complementary to the conventional fermionic channels for m H ± < m t . For heavy H ± , H ± → AW ± /HW ± extend the reach of tan β beyond that of H ± → tb in the Type-L 2HDM. We also present the combined reach of all the neutral and charged Higgs searches.

2HDM neutral scalars under the LHC

Two Higgs Doublet Models (2HDM) provide a simple framework for new physics models with an extended Higgs sector. The current LHC results, including both direct searches for additional non-Standard Model (SM) Higgs bosons, as well as precision measurements of the SM-like Higgs couplings, already provide strong constraints on the 2HDM parameter spaces. In this paper, we examine those constraints for the neutral scalars in the Type-I and Type-II 2HDM. In addition to the direct search channels with SM final states: H/A → ff¯¯¯, VV, Vh, hh, we study in particular the exotic decay channels of H/A → AZ/HZ once there is a mass hierarchy between the non-SM Higgses. We found that H/A → AZ/H Z channel has unique sensitivity to the alignment limit region which remains unconstrained by conventional searches and Higgs precision measurements. This mode also extends the reach at intermediate tβ for heavy mA that are not covered by the other direct searches.

High event rate analysis technique for the dual-axis duo-lateral position-sensitive silicon detectors of FAUST

The dual-axis duo-lateral (DADL) position-sensitive silicon detector was developed to obtain precise position and energy information for detected charged particles. The Forward Array Using Silicon Technology (FAUST) is currently equipped with 68 DADL detectors backed by CsI(Tl) scintillators for the study of charged particle correlations in heavy-ion collisions where precise position and energy information is essential. When conventional signal processing electronics were used for the DADL detectors, a position dependence of the measured energy as well as distortions in the calculated particle positions were observed. In previous work, waveforms from the detector after preamplification were studied to better understand the features that give rise to these distortions; therein, a waveform analysis technique was developed to improve the energy resolution and linearity in position reconstruction. However, the reading and writing of waveforms for an entire detector array limits data collection rates and adds significant burden in data storage and analysis speed. In this work, the integrators of a Struck SIS3316 ADC were utilized to process 228 Th source data to develop and optimize a new analysis method that captures the benefits of the waveform analysis technique while circumventing the waveform writing requirement. This integrator method – capable of 59 keV (FWHM) energy resolution – was used in the collection of 35 MeV/nucleon 28 Si + 12 C collision data using FAUST to investigate exotic decays of highly excited highly deformed nuclei. In this data, a position resolution of 0.4 mm (FWHM) was obtained for 25 MeV α-particles; for α-particles near this energy that originate from 8 Be ground state decays, a 8 Be ground state width of 30 keV (FWHM) was obtained. The impact of the energy-dependent DADL position resolution emergent from electronic noise on the quality of excited state measurement was modeled and compared to the experimental data.

Search for exotic Higgs boson decays H → 𝒜𝒜 with 𝒜 → γγ in events with a semi-merged topology in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV

A search for exotic Higgs boson decays H → 𝒜𝒜, with 𝒜 → γγ is presented, using events with a semi-merged topology. One of the hypothetical particles, 𝒜, is assumed to decay promptly into a semi-merged diphoton system reconstructed as a single photon-like object, while the other 𝒜 decays into two resolved photons. Upper limits are set on the product of the Higgs boson production cross section and the branching fraction, σ(pp → H) ℬ(H → 𝒜𝒜 → 4γ), which range from 0.264 to 0.005 pb at 95% confidence level, for 𝒜 masses in the range 1 < m 𝒜 < 15 GeV. These limits are the most stringent to date in the 1–5 GeV m 𝒜 range.
