A Liquid-Liquid Thermoelectric Heat Exchanger as a Heat Pump for Testing Phase Change Material Heat Exchangers

The primary objective of the Phase Change HX payload on the International Space Station (ISS) is to test and demonstrate the viability and performance of Phase Change Material Heat Exchangers (PCM HX). The system was required to pump a working fluid through a PCM HX to promote the phase change material to freeze and thaw as expected on Orion's Multipurpose Crew Vehicle. Due to limitations on ISS's Internal Thermal Control System, a heat pump was needed on the Phase Change HX payload to help with reducing the working fluid's temperature to below 0degC (32degF). This paper will review the design and development of a TEC based liquid-liquid heat exchanger as a way to vary to fluid temperature for the freeze and thaw phase of the PCM HX. Specifically, the paper will review the design of custom coldplates and sizing for the required heat removal of the HX.

Methods of forming components of heat exchangers and methods of forming heat exchangers

A method of forming at least a component of a heat exchanger comprises introducing a feed material comprising a first portion including a matrix material and a second portion including a sacrificial material on a surface of a substrate, exposing at least the first portion to energy to form bonds between particles of the matrix material and form a first thickness of a structure, introducing additional feed material comprising the first portion over the first thickness of the structure, exposing the additional feed material to energy to form a second thickness of the structure, and removing the sacrificial material from the structure to form at least one channel in the structure. Related heat exchangers and components, and related methods are disclosed.

Utilization of Micro Tube Heat Exchanger for Next Generation Phase Change Material Heat Exchanger Development

Abstract and not the Final document is attached. Low Lunar orbit presents a unique thermal environment with high planetary and high solar IR requirements. Orion requires a phase change material heat exchanger (PCM HX) to act as a supplemental heat rejection device (SHReD) during this orbit. As a result, Orion currently uses a PCMHX to meet heat rejection demands in low lunar orbit. This PCM HX weighs 145 lbs, a significant amount of weight on the Crew Module Adaptor. To reduce this weight, a new PCM HX and phase change material is being proposed. This new PCM HX, constructed by Mezzo technologies, was originally designed as a water based PCM HX but is now be repurposed for phase change materials with transition temperatures in Orion's set points and different freeze front propagations. Mezzo's PCM HX utilizes micro tubes which greatly increase the overall heat transfer efficiency allowing for a compact design and significant weight savings. A new phase change material is also being proposed which has a higher latent heat of fusion as well as a higher density. This paper investigates the design, testing, and analysis done on the new Mezzo PCM HX as well as the corresponding phase change material.

Cation Exchange Capacity, Anion Exchange Capacity, and Mineralogy of F-Area Aquifer Sediments

Strontium-90 (Sr-90) is a contaminant of concern in groundwater and surface water at both F-Area and H-Area Seepage Basins. This contaminant was disposed of, along with other heavy metals and radionuclides, into a series of unlined seepage basins from 1955 until 1988. The acidity of the wastewater increased Sr-90 mobility from the basin soil through the vadose zone and into the Upper Aquifer Zone (UAZ), creating a groundwater plume that discharges into wetlands areas and a local stream called Fourmile Branch.
