Example Alternative Compliance Annual Report: EPAct State and Alternative Fuel Provider Fleet Program User Guide

The U.S. Department of Energy developed an electronic reporting spreadsheet to facilitate fleets' preparation of a complete Alternative Compliance (AC) annual report. All fleets that participate in AC are encouraged to use the spreadsheet. The following examples include one AC annual report that uses the spreadsheet and one AC annual report that does not use the spreadsheet. Both examples include all components that must be included in a fleet's AC annual report. For further instructions on how to use the reporting spreadsheet, review the Alternative Compliance Guidance Document.

Optimal CO2 Transport and Storage Cost Screening: Application Example

Poster on “Optimal CO2 Transport and Storage Cost Screening: Application Example” for the CCUS 2025 conference held in Houston, Texas March 3-5, 2025. A major challenge to commercial scale CCS deployment from the perspective of coal and natural gas-fired power plants is understanding cost-optimal CO2 transport and viable geologic storage options. This study demonstrates unique workflows, using NETL-developed, publicly-available models and tools, to efficiently estimate optimal CO2 transport and storage (T&S) costs for each of the CO2 sources in NETL’s Carbon Capture Retrofit Databases (CCRD) for Electricity Generating Units. The results demonstrate the impact of cost-drivers on optimal T&S, and trends in optimal T&S data, based on real point sources that could be retrofitted with CO2 source technologies.

Watersheds and stream networks viewed longitudinally: Example insights from novel spatial portrayals of watershed characteristics

Abstract Longitudinal depictions of watershed structure and characteristics, including topography, stream networks, wetlands, ground water levels, and land use, can provide watershed knowledge and understanding unavailable from standard plan view maps. Three case studies provide examples of knowledge gained by applying longitudinal views of stream networks, watershed hydrologic behavior, and land use distributions. Longitudinal views of mountain stream networks show extreme variability in the slope‐area relationships of low Strahler order streams, large discontinuities in drainage area (large parts of drainage area space are absent in networks), and large variations in network curvature. Longitudinal views of a groundwater‐dominated headwater watershed increase the inference available from limited groundwater observations and clearly reveal how groundwater connections affect the permanence of surface water features and the distribution of vadose zone storage in the landscape. Plotting land uses longitudinally illuminates and allows a quantitative analysis of how land uses are distributed relative to topographic position. Viewing watersheds and stream networks longitudinally can provide new insights into watershed forms and processes and motivate new questions and research.

Surface analysis insight note: X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy analysis of battery electrodes—Challenges with nickel–manganese–cobalt and Li examples using an Al Kα x‐ray source

X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) has become a highly important tool for the analysis of battery materials and components. However, both anecdotal and detailed analysis of selected parts of the literature indicate that many reports of XPS on battery electrodes have significant analysis or data flaws. In this paper, we highlight several of the common challenges that analysts face when using XPS for battery materials, pointing to recent literature that addresses many of the critical issues associated with sample preparation as well as data collection and analysis. A common error for battery materials (and other materials) involves ignoring peak overlaps and interferences. Specifically, when a “minor” peak associated with a component in relatively high concentration overlaps or contributes to the primary peak (or one recommended for quantitative analysis) from a different element in the material. Overlap issues apply to many battery electrodes composed of many elements with complex photoelectron peak structures, as well as those involving peaks with seemingly simpler spectral envelopes such as Li and F. Examples of issues associated with battery systems are highlighted by a discussion of challenges associated with XPS analysis of Li and nickel–manganese–cobalt (NMC) electrodes in battery systems. Lithium analysis has challenges associated with the preparation and an often‐unrecognized peak overlap with F. In our laboratory and in the literature, NMC electrodes are often examined and new XPS users do not always recognize interference of the Auger signal from F KLL (in or on the electrode) with Ni 2p photoelectron spectrum when generated with Al Kα X‐rays. The use of simulated spectra involving both F and NiO demonstrates the extent of F Auger contributions to the Ni 2p signal strength as a function of the F/Ni atom ratio in the material and suggests spectra information that can be used to identify how significant effects will be on the resultant spectra. Our analysis demonstrates that in many cases overlap issues are significant for real electrode materials.

De Nive Quinquangula: Pentagonal Snowflake Metal Nanocrystals as an Example of Emergence Phenomenon in Nanotechnology Complex Systems

The formation of snowflakes (SFL) is one of the most captivating phenomena in nature. The fabrication of multimetallic gold (Au) nanoparticles containing copper (Cu) and iron (Fe) is reported, which adopt snowflake-like morphology after nanoparticle aggregation. The synthesis of these snowflake-like Au microcrystals occurs mainly by kinetic control. In this process, a surfactant-assisted salt reduction method is employed on a heated substrate. Here, the metal salts react within seconds to form nanoparticles. This process results in a hierarchical structure with pseudo-pentagonal symmetry and chiroptical activity. We discuss how large superstructures emerge from nanoparticle aggregation, resembling natural snowflakes. However, unlike ice snowflakes, which exhibit hexagonal symmetry, the Au snowflakes display pentagonal symmetry. It is proposed that the formation of these snowflake-like microcrystals is the result of the complexity involved in the crystal growth process and represents an example of the phenomenon of emergence, which has become very significant in several fields of modern science, including physics, biology, chemistry, economics, philosophy, and poetry. The term emergent is used to evoke the collective behavior of a large number of microscopic constituents that is qualitatively different than the behaviors of the individual constituents.

Green buffers near industrial plants, examples in Jefferson County TX

Green buffers between industrial plants and residential areas have multiple purposes in mitigating air pollution and protecting the environment. This study focuses on providing information on examples of green space development by industries near residential areas in Jefferson County, Texas. One represents a full buffer where residences were totally removed, another is a partial buffer where some residences were removed in a neighborhood and the third represents vegetation of a formerly industrial facility. Additional estimates on benefits of buffer spaces with respect to a pollutant plume are also considered. The study used geospatial and property data from 1966 to 2020. The transition from a residential area to a full or partial buffers highlights possible mitigation of air pollution impacts while serving additional functions, such as boosting stormwater infiltration and improving the aesthetic attractiveness of the area. The transformation from oil tanks to forested space may display the potential for environmental remediation, but not all spaces are suitable for fully forested buffers, as safety and other limitations should be considered. With the analysis of the classic Plume Equation insights can be provided regarding the possible impact of green buffers on ground-level pollutant concentrations. The calculations for atmospheric stability classes A-F and for various stack heights provide an understanding of how different conditions may affect the pollutant concentrations. The presence of a green buffer can play a crucial role in controlling ground-level pollution concentrations and reduce a community’s perception of risk.
