The Influence of Indian Ocean Atmospheric Circulation on Warm Pool Hydroclimate During the Holocene Epoch

Existing paleoclimate data suggest a complex evolution of hydroclimate within the Indo-Pacific Warm Pool (IPWP) during the Holocene epoch. Here we introduce a new leaf wax isotope record from Sulawesi, Indonesia and compare proxy water isotope data with ocean-atmosphere general circulation model (OAGCM) simulations to identify mechanisms influencing Holocene IPWP hydroclimate. Modeling simulations suggest that orbital forcing causes heterogenous changes in precipitation across the IPWP on a seasonal basis that may account for the differences in time-evolution of the proxy data at respective sites. Both the proxies and simulations suggest that precipitation variability during the September-November (SON) season is important for hydroclimate in Borneo. The preeminence of the SON season suggests that a seasonally lagged relationship between the Indian monsoon and Indian Ocean Walker circulation influences IPWP hydroclimatic variability during the Holocene.

A single nanobody neutralizes multiple epochally evolving human noroviruses by modulating capsid plasticity

Acute gastroenteritis caused by human noroviruses (HuNoVs) is a significant global health and economic burden and is without licensed vaccines or antiviral drugs. The GII.4 HuNoV causes most epidemics worldwide. This virus undergoes epochal evolution with periodic emergence of variants with new antigenic profiles and altered specificity for histo-blood group antigens (HBGA), the determinants of cell attachment and susceptibility, hampering the development of immunotherapeutics. Here, we show that a llama-derived nanobody M4 neutralizes multiple GII.4 variants with high potency in human intestinal enteroids. The crystal structure of M4 complexed with the protruding domain of the GII.4 capsid protein VP1 revealed a conserved epitope, away from the HBGA binding site, fully accessible only when VP1 transitions to a “raised” conformation in the capsid. Together with dynamic light scattering and electron microscopy of the GII.4 VLPs, our studies suggest a mechanism in which M4 accesses the epitope by altering the conformational dynamics of the capsid and triggering its disassembly to neutralize GII.4 infection.

A particle-in-cell code comparison for ion acceleration: EPOCH, LSP, and WarpX

There are now more Particle-in-Cell (PIC) codes than ever before that researchers use to simulate intense laser-plasma interactions. To date, there have been relatively few direct comparisons of these codes in the literature, especially for relativistic intensity lasers interacting with thin overdense targets. To address this we perform a code comparison of three PIC codes: EPOCH, LSP, and WarpX for the problem of laser-driven ion acceleration in a 2D(3v) geometry for a 10 20 W cm -2 intensity laser. We examine the plasma density, ion energy spectra, and laser-plasma coupling of the three codes and find strong agreement. We also run the same simulation 20 times with different random seeds to explore statistical fluctuations of the outputs. We then compare the execution times and memory usage of the codes (without “tuning” to improve performance) using between 1 and 48 processors on one node. We provide input files to encourage larger and more frequent code comparisons in this field.

A deep, multi-epoch Chandra HETG study of the ionized outflow from NGC 4051

Actively accreting supermassive black holes significantly impact the evolution of their host galaxies, truncating further star formation by expelling large fractions of gas with wide-angle outflows. The X-ray band is key to understanding how these black hole winds affect their environment, as the outflows have high temperatures ~10 5–8 K). We have developed a Bayesian framework for characterizing active galactic nucleus outflows with an improved ability to explore parameter space and perform robust model selection. We applied this framework to a new 700 ks and an archival 315 ks Chandra High Energy Transmission Gratings observation of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 4051. We have detected six absorbers intrinsic to NGC 4051. These wind components span velocities from 400 to 30000 km s -1 . We have determined that the most statistically significant wind component is purely collisionally ionized, which is the first detection of such an absorber. This wind has T ≈ 10 7 K and v ≈ 880 km s -1 and remains remarkably stable between the two epochs. Other slow components also remain stable across time. Fast outflow components change their properties between 2008 and 2016, suggesting either physical changes or clouds moving in and out of the line of sight. For one of the fast components, we obtain one of the tightest wind density measurements to date, log n/(cm -3 ) = 13.0$^{+0.01}_{-0.02}$, and determine that it is located at ~240 gravitational radii. The estimated total outflow power surpasses 5 percent of the bolometric luminosity (albeit with large uncertainties) making it important in the context of galaxy–black hole interactions.

Decay of multiple dark matter particles to dark radiation in different epochs does not alleviate the Hubble tension

Decaying cold dark matter (CDM) has been considered as a mechanism to tackle the tensions in the Hubble expansion rate and the clustering of matter. However, polarization measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) severely constrain the fraction of dark matter decaying before recombination, and lensing of the CMB anisotropies by large-scale structure sets strong constraints on dark matter decaying after recombination. Together, these constraints make an explanation of the Hubble tension in terms of decaying dark matter unlikely. In response to this situation, we investigate whether a dark matter ensemble with CDM particles decaying into free streaming dark radiation in different epochs can alleviate the problem. We find that it does not.

First Constraints on the Epoch of Reionization Using the Non-Gaussianity of the Kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich Effect from the South Pole Telescope and Herschel-SPIRE Observations

We report results from an analysis aimed at detecting the trispectrum of the kinematic Sunyaev-Zel’dovich (kSZ) effect by combining data from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and Herschel-SPIRE experiments over a 100 deg 2 field. The SPT observations combine data from the previous and current surveys, namely SPTpol and SPT-3G, to achieve depths of 4.5, 3, and 16 μ K - arcmin in bands centered at 95, 150, and 220 GHz. For SPIRE, we include data from the 600 and 857 GHz bands. We reconstruct the velocity-induced large-scale correlation of the small-scale kSZ signal with a quadratic estimator that uses two cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature maps, constructed by optimally combining data from all the frequency bands. We reject the null hypothesis of a zero trispectrum at 10.3 σ level. However, the measured trispectrum contains contributions from both the kSZ and other undesired components, such as CMB lensing and astrophysical foregrounds, with kSZ being sub-dominant. We use the agora simulations to estimate the expected signal from CMB lensing and astrophysical foregrounds. After accounting for the contributions from CMB lensing and foreground signals, we do not detect an excess kSZ-only trispectrum and use this nondetection to set constraints on reionization. By applying a prior based on observations of the Gunn-Peterson trough, we obtain an upper limit on the duration of reionization of Δ z re , 50 < 4.5 (95% confidence level). We find these constraints are fairly robust to foregrounds assumptions. This trispectrum measurement is independent of, but consistent with, Planck’s optical depth measurement. This result is the first constraint on the epoch of reionization using the non-Gaussian nature of the kSZ signal.

Electrode-omics reveals epochs in silicon anode evolution underpinning electrochemomechanical resilience

Here, we advance electrode-omics to identify evolutionary bursts by which ethereal locally superconcentrated electrolytes (LSCEs) mitigate silicon anode degradation through its epochs of electrochemical and chemical reactions. Anode composites form initially at high potential from ethereal solvent and anion [bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide (FSI − )] redox. A first evolutionary burst at lower potential enriches composites with lithium alkoxides (LiO–R) and lithium oxide (Li 2 O) and depletes sulfur oxides (SO x ) species. As the cells are cycled, a second evolutionary burst takes place, where previously extinct SO x species reemerge concurrently with a loss of LiO–R and Li 2 O. This identifies reactions rooted in “SuFEx” chemistry, where oxoanionic LiO–R and Li 2 O species, electrochemically generated in the solid-electrolyte interphase, chemically react with FSI − in the electrolyte to form emergent species. This sequence of evolutionary bursts produces a mechanically resilient composite that reduces silicon anode cracking over hundreds of cycles, leading to overpotential increase of only ~0.01 volts after 200 cycles.

Iron-corrected Single-epoch Black Hole Masses of DESI Quasars at Low Redshift

We present a study on the possible overestimation of single-epoch supermassive black hole (SMBH) masses in previous works, based on more than 55,000 type 1 quasars at 0.25 < z < 0.8 from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). We confirm that iron emission strength serves as a good tracer of the Eddington ratio, and estimate SMBH masses using an iron-corrected R–L relation for Hβ, where R is the broad-line region size and L is the continuum luminosity. Compared with our measurements, previous canonical measurements without the iron correction are overestimated by a factor of 1.5 on average. The overestimation can be up to a factor of 5 for super-Eddington quasars. The fraction of super-Eddington quasars in our sample is about 5%, significantly higher than 0.4% derived from the canonical measurements. Using a sample featuring both Hβ and Mg II emission lines, we calibrate Mg II -based SMBH masses using iron-corrected, Hβ-based SMBH masses and establish an iron-corrected R–L relation for Mg II . The revised relation features a flatter luminosity dependence with a slope of 0.36 and incorporates an additional term of −0.21R Fe , where R Fe denotes the relative iron strength. We use this formula to build a catalog of about 0.5 million DESI quasars at 0.6 < z < 1.6. If these iron-corrected R–L relations for Hβ and Mg II are valid at high redshift, current mass measurements of luminous quasars at z ≥ 6 would have been overestimated by a factor of 2.3 on average, alleviating the tension between SMBH mass and growth history in the early universe.

Using Gravitational Lensing to Probe for Candidate Quintessential Galaxies in the Epoch of Reionization

Abstract Understanding the properties of the first generation of galaxies is an ongoing challenge in observational astrophysics. James Webb Space Telescope deep-field observations have led to the identification of large numbers of galaxies within the Epoch of Reionization (EoR); however, it remains observationally challenging to study the detailed properties of the most numerous, faint high- z galaxies without strong gravitational lensing. To this end, we present five m AB ≃ 24 galaxies, all projected behind the cores of massive clusters where high lensing magnifications significantly (≳1.5 mag) boost their observed brightness. These galaxies are each characterized by a drop-off in their spectra between the near-IR and optical wavelengths, suggesting the presence of a Lyman break at z > 6. The bright sources enable precise dropout color constraints. We combine the dropout data with follow-up imaging to constrain continuum slopes redward of their breaks. Using the open-source spectral energy distribution modeling software Prospector , we characterize two of these galaxies as probable high- z ( z ∼ 6.5–7) and three as probable low- z ( z ∼ 2) sources, demonstrating that for very bright ( m AB < 24) dropout candidates even limited photometric data have good power to distinguish between high- z galaxies and red or dusty low- z galaxies. The two candidate high- z dropouts are comparably bright to the brightest galaxies identified at such redshifts in deep fields, but due to lensing magnifications are intrinsically fainter by at least 1.5 mag. If confirmed, these galaxies represent exciting laboratories for performing detailed follow-up studies of galaxy properties within the EoR.

SILVERRUSH. XIV. Ly α Luminosity Functions and Angular Correlation Functions from 20,000 Ly α Emitters at z ∼ 2.2–7.3 from up to 24 deg 2 HSC-SSP and CHORUS Surveys: Linking the Postreionization Epoch to the Heart of Reionization

Abstract We present luminosity functions (LFs) and angular correlation functions (ACFs) derived from 18,960 Ly α emitters (LAEs) at z = 2.2−7.3 over a wide survey area of ≲24 deg 2 that are identified in the narrowband data of the HSC-SSP and CHORUS surveys. Confirming the large sample with 241 spectroscopically identified LAEs, we determine Ly α LFs and ACFs in the brighter luminosity range down to 0.5 L ⋆ , and confirm that our measurements are consistent with previous studies but offer significantly reduced statistical uncertainties. The improved precision of our ACFs allows us to clearly detect one-halo terms at some redshifts, and provides large-scale bias measurements that indicate host halo masses of ∼10 11 M ⊙ over z ≃ 2−7. By comparing our Ly α LF (ACF) measurements with reionization models, we estimate the neutral hydrogen fractions in the intergalactic medium to be x H i < 0.05 (= 0.06 − 0.03 + 0.12 ) at z = 5.7 and x H i = 0.1 5 − 0.08 + 0.10 ( 0.21 − 0.14 + 0.19 ), 0.1 8 − 0.12 + 0.14 , and 0.7 5 − 0.13 + 0.09 at z = 6.6, 7.0, and 7.3, respectively. Our findings suggest that the neutral hydrogen fraction remains relatively low, x H i ≲ 0.2, at z = 5−7, but increases sharply at z > 7, reaching x H i ∼ 0.9 by z ≃ 8−9, as indicated by recent JWST studies. The combination of our results from LAE observations with recent JWST observations suggests that the major epoch of reionization occurred at z ∼ 7−8, likely driven by the emergence of massive sources emitting significant ionizing photons.
