Probing effective field theory operators in the associated production of top quarks with a Z boson in multilepton final states at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV

A search for new top quark interactions is performed within the framework of an effective field theory using the associated production of either one or two top quarks with a Z boson in multilepton final states. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 138 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. Five dimension-six operators modifying the electroweak interactions of the top quark are considered. Novel machine-learning techniques are used to enhance the sensitivity to effects arising from these operators. Distributions used for the signal extraction are parameterized in terms of Wilson coefficients describing the interaction strengths of the operators. All five Wilson coefficients are simultaneously fit to data and 95% confidence level intervals are computed. All results are consistent with the SM expectations.

Anomalous electroweak physics unraveled via evidential deep learning

The ever-growing ecosystem of beyond standard model (BSM) calculations and parametrizations has motivated the development of systematic methods for making quantitative cross-comparisons over the wide range of possible models, especially with controllable uncertainties. In this setting, the language of uncertainty quantification (UQ) furnishes useful metrics for assessing statistical overlaps and discrepancies among BSM and related models. In this study, we leverage recent machine learning (ML) developments in evidential deep learning (EDL) for UQ to separate data (aleatoric) and knowledge (epistemic) uncertainties in a model-discrimination setting. We construct several potentially BSM-motivated scenarios for the anomalous electroweak interaction (AEWI) of neutrinos with nucleons in deep inelastic scattering ( v DIS). These scenarios are then quantitatively mapped, as a demonstration, alongside Monte Carlo replicas of the CT18 PDFs used to calculate the $\varDelta \chi ^{2}$ statistic for a typical multi-GeV v DIS experiment, CDHSW. Our framework effectively highlights areas of model agreement and provides a classification of out-of-distribution (OOD) samples. By offering the opportunity to quantitatively understand model overlaps, the approach presented in this work can help facilitate efficient BSM model exploration and exclusion for future New Physics searches.

Dark matter spectra from the electroweak to the Planck scale

We compute the decay spectrum for dark matter (DM) with masses above the scale of electroweak symmetry breaking, all the way to the Planck scale. For an arbitrary hard process involving a decay to the unbroken standard model, we determine the prompt distribution of stable states including photons, neutrinos, positrons, and antiprotons. These spectra are a crucial ingredient in the search for DM via indirect detection at the highest energies as being probed in current and upcoming experiments including IceCube, HAWC, CTA, and LHAASO. Our approach improves considerably on existing methods, for instance, we include all relevant electroweak interactions.

Search for new physics in multijet events with at least one photon and large missing transverse momentum in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV

A search for new physics in final states consisting of at least one photon, multiple jets, and large missing transverse momentum is presented, using proton-proton collision events at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{−1}$, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC from 2016 to 2018. The events are divided into mutually exclusive bins characterized by the missing transverse momentum, the number of jets, the number of b-tagged jets, and jets consistent with the presence of hadronically decaying W, Z, or Higgs bosons. The observed data are found to be consistent with the prediction from standard model processes. The results are interpreted in the context of simplified models of pair production of supersymmetric particles via strong and electroweak interactions. Depending on the details of the signal models, gluinos and squarks of masses up to 2.35 and 1.43 TeV, respectively, and electroweakinos of masses up to 1.23 TeV are excluded at 95% confidence level.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Search for electroweak production of charginos and neutralinos at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV in final states containing hadronic decays of WW, WZ, or WH and missing transverse momentum

This Letter presents a search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos via electroweak interactions. The results are based on data from proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb -1 . The search considers final states with large missing transverse momentum and pairs of hadronically decaying bosons WW, WZ, and WH, where H is the Higgs boson. These bosons are identified using novel algorithms. No significant excess of events is observed relative to the expectations from the standard model. Limits at the 95% confidence level are placed on the cross section for production of mass-degenerate wino-like supersymmetric particles $\widetilde{χ}_1^±$ and $\widetilde{χ}_2^0$, and mass-degenerate higgsino-like supersymmetric particles $\widetilde{χ}_1^±$, $\widetilde{χ}_2^0$, and $\widetilde{χ}_3^0$. In the limit of a nearly-massless lightest supersymmetric particle $\widetilde{χ}_1^0$, wino-like particles with masses up to 870 and 960 GeV are excluded in the cases of $\widetilde{χ}_2^0$→Z$\widetilde{χ}_1^0$ and $\widetilde{χ}_2^0$→$\widetilde{χ}_1^0$, respectively, and higgsino-like particles are excluded between 300 and 650 GeV.

Nucleon axial-vector form factor and radius from radiatively corrected antineutrino scattering data

The nucleon axial-vector form factor, 𝐺 𝐴 , is critical to determine the electroweak interactions of leptons with nucleons. Important examples of processes influenced by 𝐺 𝐴 are elastic (anti)neutrino-nucleon scattering and muon capture by the proton. Sparse experimental data results in a large uncertainty on the momentum dependence of 𝐺 𝐴 and has motivated the consideration of new experimental probes and first-principles lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) evaluations. The comparison of new and precise theoretical predictions for 𝐺 𝐴 with future experimental data necessitates the application of radiative corrections to experimentally observable processes. We apply these corrections in the extraction of 𝐺 𝐴 and the associated axial-vector radius from the recent MINERvA antineutrino-hydrogen data, compare the effects from radiative corrections to other uncertainties in neutrino scattering experiments, and discuss the comparison of lattice QCD evaluations to experimental measurements.

Ab initio electroweak corrections to superallowed β decays and their impact on V ud

Radiative corrections are essential for an accurate determination of V ud from superallowed β decays. In view of recent progress in the single-nucleon sector, the uncertainty is dominated by the theoretical description of nucleus-dependent effects, limiting the precision that can currently be achieved for V ud . In this work, we provide a detailed account of the electroweak corrections to superallowed β decays in effective field theory (EFT), including the power counting, potential and ultrasoft contributions, and factorization in the decay rate. Here, we present a first numerical evaluation of the dominant corrections in light nuclei based on quantum Monte Carlo methods, confirming the expectations from the EFT power counting. Finally, we discuss strategies how to extract from data the low-energy constants that parametrize short-distance contributions and whose values are not predicted by the EFT. Combined with advances in ab initio nuclear-structure calculations, this EFT framework allows one to systematically address the dominant uncertainty in V ud , as illustrated in detail for the 14 O → 14 N transition.

Renormalization of beta decay at three loops and beyond

The anomalous dimension for heavy-heavy-light effective theory operators describing nuclear beta decay is computed through three-loop order in the static limit. The result at order Z 2 α 3 corrects a previous result in the literature. An all-orders symmetry is shown to relate the anomalous dimensions at leading and subleading powers of Z at a given order of α . The first unknown coefficient for the anomalous dimension now appears at O ( Z 2 α 4 ) . Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Search for the nonresonant production of Higgs boson pairs via gluon fusion and vector-boson fusion in the $b\bar{b}$τ + τ – final state in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for the nonresonant production of Higgs boson pairs in the HH → $b\overline{b}$$\tau^{+}\tau^{-}$ channel is performed using 140 fb -1 of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The analysis strategy is optimized to probe anomalous values of the Higgs boson self-coupling modifier $\kappa_{\tau}$ and of the quartic HHVV (v = W,Z) coupling modifier $\kappa$ 2⁢V . No significant excess above the expected background from Standard Model processes is observed. An observed (expected) upper limit μ HH < 5.9⁢(3.3) is set at 95% confidence-level on the Higgs boson pair production cross section normalized to its Standard Model prediction. The coupling modifiers are constrained to an observed (expected) 95% confidence interval of -3.1 <$\kappa_{\tau}$ < 9.0 (-2.5 < $\kappa_{\tau}$ < 9.3) and -0.5 <$\kappa$ 2⁢V < 2.7 (-0.2 <$\kappa$ 2⁢V < 2.4), assuming all other Higgs boson couplings are fixed to the Standard Model prediction. The results are also interpreted in the context of effective field theories via constraints on anomalous Higgs boson couplings and Higgs boson pair production cross sections assuming different kinematic benchmark scenarios.

Angular Correlations in the β Decay of B 8 : First Tensor-Current Limits from a Mirror-Nucleus Pair

We present the first measurement of the α–β–ν angular correlation in the Gamow-Teller β + decay of 8 B. This was accomplished using the Beta-decay Paul Trap, expanding on our previous work on the β – decay of 8 Li. The 8 B result is consistent with the V – A electroweak interaction of the standard model and, on its own, provides a limit on the exotic right-handed tensor current relative to the axial-vector current of |C T /C A | 2 < 0.013 at the 95.5% confidence level. This represents the first high-precision angular correlation measurements in mirror decays and was made possible through the use of an ion trap. Here, by combining this 8 B result with our previous 8 Li results, we demonstrate a new pathway for increased precision in searches for exotic currents.

Lattice QCD Calculation of Electroweak Box Contributions to Superallowed Nuclear and Neutron Beta Decays

We present the first lattice QCD calculation of the universal axial γ W -box contribution □ γ W V A to both superallowed nuclear and neutron beta decays. This contribution emerges as a significant component within the theoretical uncertainties surrounding the extraction of | V u d | from superallowed decays. Our calculation is conducted using two domain wall fermion ensembles at the physical pion mass. To construct the nucleon four-point correlation functions, we employ the random sparsening field technique. Furthermore, we incorporate long-distance contributions to the hadronic function using the infinite-volume reconstruction method. Upon performing the continuum extrapolation, we arrive at □ γ W V A = 3.65 ( 7 ) lat ( 1 ) PT × 10 − 3 . Consequently, this yields a slightly higher value of | V u d | = 0.973 86 ( 11 ) exp ( 9 ) RC ( 27 ) NS , reducing the previous 2.1 σ tension with the CKM unitarity to 1.8 σ . Additionally, we calculate the vector γ W -box contribution to the axial charge g A , denoted as □ γ W V V , and explore its potential implications. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

The Hunt for High-Tc Superconductivity: from Discovery to Breakthrough [Slides]

Summary/Outlook: BCS pairing theory of superconductivity is a prototypical example of a condensed matter physics problem. It has inspired the Weinberg Salam model for Electroweak interactions; So far there is no quantitative theory of superconductivity in strongly correlated materials. The limits on Tc are still unknown; Almost all known superconducting materials were found without theoretical guidance; The next-generation of first-principles approaches is beginning to captures a more holistic picture of correlated materials, giving way to a more quantitative theory of materials.

The St. Benedict Facility: Probing Fundamental Symmetries through Mixed Mirror $β$-Decays

Precise measurements of nuclear beta decays provide a unique insight into the Standard Model due to their connection to the electroweak interaction. These decays help constrain the unitarity or non-unitarity of the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa (CKM) quark mixing matrix, and can uniquely probe the existence of exotic scalar or tensor currents. Of these decays, superallowed mixed mirror transitions have been the least well-studied, in part due to the absence of data on their Fermi to Gamow-Teller mixing ratios ($ρ$). At the Nuclear Science Laboratory (NSL) at the University of Notre Dame, the Superallowed Transition Beta-Neutrino Decay Ion Coincidence Trap (St. Benedict) is being constructed to determine the ρ for various mirror decays via a measurement of the beta–neutrino angular correlation parameter ($α_{βν}$) to a relative precision of 0.5%. In this work, we present an overview of the St. Benedict facility and the impact it will have on various Beyond the Standard Model studies, including an expanded sensitivity study of $ρ$ for various mirror nuclei accessible to the facility. A feasibility evaluation is also presented that indicates the measurement goals for many mirror nuclei, which are currently attainable in a week of radioactive beam delivery at the NSL.
