Magnetic, transport and thermal properties of δ-phase UZr 2

Here, polycrystals of hexagonal δ-phase UZr 2 have been synthesised and studied by means of heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, magnetisation, electrical resistivity, magnetoresistance, thermoelectric power, thermal conductivity measurements, for the first time, at temperatures from 1.8 to 300 K and in magnetic fields up to 8 T. The weak temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility and the small value of both Seebeck (0.75 μV/K at room temperature) and of the Sommerfeld coefficient (13.5 mJ mol –1 K –2 ) point to 5f-electrons in this material having a delocalised nature. The electrical resistivity and magnetoresistance indicate the presence of significant electronic disorder in δ-UZr 2 , consistent with the disorder in its crystal structure. Density functional theory calculations have been performed and compared to experimental results.

Can Polyelectrolyte Mechanical Properties be Directly Modulated by an Electric Field? A Molecular Dynamics Study

Multifunctionality in polymers facilitates their application in emerging technologies. Electrical fields are a preferred stimulus because of the speed and ease of application to bulk polymers. While a wide range of electrically triggered actuators are developed, and electrically controlled adhesion between gels is demonstrated, modification of bulk mechanical properties via electrical stimuli remains elusive. Polymers with covalently incorporated ionic charge (polyelectrolytes) should be well suited to achieving this goal since the mechanical properties depend on electrostatic interactions and these charges are intrinsically susceptible to electric fields. Molecular dynamics simulations are utilized here to investigate whether electric fields can modulate the mechanical properties of polyelectrolytes and to understand the governing mechanisms. Mechanical property modulation by electric field is found to be sensitive to the charge distribution—charges must be tightly attached to the polymer backbone, and responsivity is greater if a single backbone contains both positive and negative charges. The dominant mechanisms are reorientation and stretching of the polymer chains, which also elongate the ionic clusters to maintain strong electrostatic interactions throughout deformation. Furthermore, these insights are critical for future experimental realization of polymers with electric field regulated mechanical properties.

Single-crystal growth and characterization of antiferromagnetically ordered EuIn 2

Here, we report the single crystal growth and characterization of EuIn 2 , a magnetic topological semimetal candidate according to our density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We present results from electrical resistance, magnetization, Mössbauer spectroscopy, and X-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) measurements. We observe three magnetic transitions at T N1 ~ 14.2 K, T N2 ~ 12.8 K and T N3 ~ 11 K, signatures of which are consistently seen in anisotropic temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistance data. Mössbauer spectroscopy measurements on ground crystals suggest an incommensurate sinusoidally modulated magnetic structure below the transition at T N1 ~ 14 K, followed by the appearance of higher harmonics in the modulation on further cooling roughly below T N2 ~ 13 K, before the moment distribution squaring up below the lowest transition around T N3 ~ 11 K. XRMS measurements showed the appearance of magnetic Bragg peaks below T N1 ~ 14 K, with a propagation vector of $τ$ = ($τ_h$, $\overline{τ}_h$, 0), with $τ_h$ varying with temperature, and showing a jump at T N3 ~ 11 K. The temperature dependence of $τ_h$ between ~ 11 K and 14 K shows incommensurate values consistent with the Mössbauer data. XRMS data indicate that $τ_h$ remains incommensurate at low temperatures and locks into $τ_h$ = 0.3443(1).

Hidden anomalies in topological t – PtBi 2 – x probed by second harmonic generation

The noncentrosymmetric Weyl semimetal PtBi 2–x (t-PtBi 2–x ) exhibits various interesting technologically important physical properties. We report the experimental investigation of PtBi 1.6 via second harmonic generation (SHG), single-crystal x-ray diffraction, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements. While bulk structural, magnetic, and electrical properties show no phase transitions below room temperature, the temperature dependence of the SHG intensity reveals two anomalies: one at T* ~ 60 K and another at T x ~ 200 K. Quantitative analysis indicates that the SHG signal results from both the buckled Bi1 surface termination with the 3m symmetry and flat Bi2 surface termination with the m symmetry. However, the anomalies are mainly driven by Bi1 on the surface: (1) T* marks the onset of surface states which is also manifested in the c-axis resistivity drop and (2) T x corresponds to the lowest thermal contraction of the structure and enhanced magnetic susceptibility. Furthermore, this study demonstrates that SHG is a powerful technique for probing surface properties even for noncentrosymmetric materials.

Oxygen stabilization induced enhancement in J(sub c) and T(sub c) of superconducting oxides

In an attempt to enhance the electrical and mechanical properties of the high temperature superconducting oxides, high T(sub c) composites were prepared composed of the 123 compounds and AgO. The presence of extra oxygen due to the decomposition of AgO at high temperature is found to stabilize the superconducting 123 phase. Ag is found to serve as clean flux for grain growth and precipitates as pinning center. Consequently, almost two orders of magnitude enhancement in critical current densities were also observed in these composites. In addition, these composites also show much improvement in workability and shape formation. On the other hand, proper oxygen treatment of Y5Ba6Cu11Oy was found to possibly stabilize superconducting phase with T(sub c) near 250 K. I-V, ac susceptibility, and electrical resistivity measurements indicate the existence of this ultra high T(sub c) phase in this compound. Detailed structure, microstructure, electrical, magnetic and thermal studies of the superconducting composites and the ultra high T(sub c) compound are presented and discussed.

Current-conserving relativistic linear response for collisional plasmas

Here we investigate the response of a relativistic plasma to electromagnetic fields in the framework of the Boltzmann equation incorporating a collision term in the relaxation rate approximation selected in a form assuring current conservation. We obtain an explicit solution for the linearized perturbation of the Fermi–Dirac equilibrium distribution in terms of the average relaxation rate k. We study the resulting covariant, gauge invariant, and current conserving form of the polarization tensor in the ultrarelativistic and non-relativistic limits. We evaluate the susceptibility in the ultrarelativistic limit and explore their dependence on k. Finally, we study the dispersion relations for the longitudinal and transverse poles of the propagator. We show that for k >2ω p , where ω p is the plasma frequency, the plasma wave modes are overdamped. In the opposite case, k$\ll$ ω p , the propagating plasma modes are weakly damped.

NPB Cesium Space Experiment

Neutral Particle Beam (NPB) weapons systems are planned to perform the ballistic missile defense functions of nuclear weapon/decoy discrimination and warhead kill at appropriate energy levels and ion currents. Negatively charged ions are produced in a specialized ion source and focused into a high quality particle beam. NPB linear accelerators accelerate and steer the negatively charged ions using electric and magnetic fields. After acceleration and steering the neutralizer system strips away extra electrons from ions to form the electrically neutral particle beam. The neutral beam then travels through space to the target unaffected by the Earth's magnetic fields. Continuing technological advances have greatly reduced the size and weight of NPB accelerator systems. Ion current production has been enhanced by over 100 percent with the intermittent addition of cesium at the NPB ion source device. This increase in current is essential to attain the most light weight, compact NPB platforms and minimize expensive launch costs. Addition of cesium into the ion source has been identified by the NPB community as the highest priority risk reduction space experiment necessary prior to planned NPB accelerator experiments and later weapons systems. The NPB Cesium Space Experiment is planned to successfully demonstrate controlled cesium introduction and vaporization into a simulated ion source chamber. Microgravity effects on the cesium deposition will be studied as will the effects of small amounts of cesium on high voltage accelerator components that might be susceptible to electrical insulator break downs. The experiment design will simulate as closely as possible the environment, physical and operational characteristics of the actual NPB ion source.

Interaction of magnetic fields with spinons in a fractionalized state

The 4d-electron trimer lattice Ba₄Nb₁₋ₓRu₃₊ₓO₁₂ exhibits either a quantum spin liquid (QSL) or a heavy-fermion strange metal (HFSM) phase, depending on Nb content. In the QSL state, itinerant spinons act as effective heat carriers, enhancing thermal conductivity. Strikingly, applying a magnetic field up to 14 T causes an abrupt, up-to-5000% increase in heat capacity below 150 mK, disrupting the linear temperature dependence typical of both phases. Meanwhile, AC susceptibility and electrical resistivity remain nearly unchanged, while thermal conductivity drops by up to 40% below 4 K. These results suggest spinons, despite being charge-neutral, are highly sensitive to magnetic fields at low temperatures. We propose that the magnetic field could induce Anderson localization of spinons, creating emergent non-magnetic two-level systems responsible for the Schottky-like anomaly in heat capacity. These findings point to a previously unexplored regime of spinon dynamics, potentially governed by field-induced localization and distinct from conventional magnetic or transport signatures.

Differences in the resistive and thermodynamic properties of the single crystalline chiral superconductor candidate SrPtAs

The locally noncentrosymmetric superconductor SrPtAs is proposed to host a topological chiral d-wave state, but experimental reports have been limited to polycrystalline samples. Here we report the synthesis of single crystalline SrPtAs grown from Pb flux. SrPtAs crystallizes in the hexagonal space group P⁢6 3 /mmc with lattice parameters a=4.2445⁢(4) Å and c=8.9513⁢(18) Å. Additionally, magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements reveal a superconducting transition at T c ~2.2 K, in agreement with previous reports on polycrystalline samples. Surprisingly, heat capacity data show only a small bulk transition at 0.7 K. We discuss the possible origins of the discrepancy between the various measurements.

Setting Priorities for Photovoltaic Reliability Research Using Criticality Analysis

A forward-looking research opportunity number (RON) is defined for photovoltaic reliability researchers. The RON enables researchers to prioritize their efforts toward the highest impact. For a given degradation mode, the RON is based on three factors: the effect on levelized cost of electricity, the susceptibility of future module products, and the maturity of accelerated tests that can detect and quantify the mode. Reporting bias is avoided because the RON does not rely on polls. The RON is derived for three example cases: light and elevated temperature degradation, backsheet cracking, and antireflective coating abrasion. Finally, these examples demonstrate that targeted research has reduced the risk for these modes over the last several years.

New results of studies on lunar Explorer 35

Discussion of results obtained by Explorer 35 indicating the absence of a pseudomagnetosphere and a shock wave. The special features of Explorer 35 and its orbit are reviewed. Observations of the circumlunar magnetic field are evaluated, together with data concerning the electromagnetic properties of the lunar surface. A model of the solar plasma and the interplanetary magnetic field in the vicinity of the moon is constructed. The results obtained by Explorer 35 are also used to study the magnetic susceptibility, the electrical conductivity, and internal temperature of the moon. It is concluded that the moon is a nonmagnetic, comparatively nonconducting, and, consequently, comparatively cold dielectric sphere which absorbs both the solar wind plasma and high-energy particle fluxes incident on its surface.

Ethylene-Vapor Optrodes

Porous optical fibers include sensing regions filled with reagents. Optical-fiber chemical sensors (optrodes) developed to measure concentrations of ethylene in air in enclosed artificial plant-growth environments. Such measurements needed because ethylene acts as plant-growth hormone affecting growth at concentrations less than or equal to 20 parts per billion. Optrodes small, but exhibit sensitivities comparable to those of larger instruments. Operated safely in potentially explosive atmospheres and neither cause, nor susceptible to, electrical interference at suboptical frequencies.

Lanthanide-containing polyimides

The preparation of a variety of lanthanide-containing polyimide films is described, and results of their characterization are presented. The properties investigated include the glass transition temperature, thermooxidative stability, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical conductivity of the polymer. Films containing lanthanide chlorides, fluorides, and sulfides are flexible, but those containing lanthanide nitrates are extremely brittle. The addition of lanthanide acetates and acetylacetonates caused immediate gelation of two of the synthesis-mixture ingredients. It was found that, in general, the addition of lanthanide to the polyimide increases the density and glass transition temperature of the polymer but slightly decreases the thermooxidative stability.

Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction induced magnetoelectric coupling in a tetrahedral molecular spin-frustrated system

We have investigated magnetoelectric (ME) coupling in the single-molecule magnet Mn 4 Te 4 (PEt 3 ) 4 with tetrahedral spin frustration. Our density functional studies found that an electric dipole moment can emerge with various noncollinear spin orderings. The forms of spin-dependent dipole are determined and consistent with that in noncentrosymmetric magnets driven by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Writing a parameterized spin Hamiltonian, after solving for eigenvalues and eigenstates, we quantified the ME coupling by calculating the thermal average of the electric and magnetic susceptibilities, which can be influenced by external magnetic and electric fields, respectively. The quadratic relations are expected to be observable in experiments.

Direct observation of electric field-induced magnetism in a molecular magnet

Abstract We report the direct observation of an electrically-induced magnetic susceptibility in the molecular nano- magnet [Fe 3 O(O 2 CPh) 6 (py) 3 ]ClO 4 · py, an Fe 3 trimer. This magnetoelectric effect results from the breaking of spatial inversion symmetry due to the spin configurations of the antiferromagnetic trimer. Both static and very low frequency electric fields were used. Fractional changes of the magnetic susceptibility of 11 ppb $$\pm 2$$ ± 2 per kVm -1 for the temperature range 8 . 5 < T < 13 . 5 K were observed for applied electric fields up to 62 kV m − 1 . The changes in susceptibility were measured using a tunnel diode oscillator operating at liquid helium temperatures while the sample is held at a higher regulated temperature.
