Guest Editorial: Control interactions in power electronic converter dominated power systems

The modern power systems have undergone significant transformations at the generation, transmission, distribution, and utilization levels due to the remarkable advancements in power electronic converter technology. Power electronic converters are now prevalent in various applications, including wind turbine converters, photovoltaic inverters, flexible AC transmission systems (FACTS) and high-voltage DC (HVDC) converters, distributed generators, microgrids, and electric vehicles. The widespread adoption of power electronic converters has revolutionized the power system by providing fast and flexible controllability. However, their unique characteristics, such as fast response, multi-time scale dynamics, reconfigurable control, and varying sizes and capacities, have introduced new stability challenges, fundamentally altering the dynamics of modern power systems.

Editorial for the Virtual Special Issue of Journal of Power Sources “Low temperature fuel cells and electrolysers” - Science and engineering: Let's play this game hand in hand!

Electrochemistry is already and will increasingly be amongst the major drivers of our energetic mix decarbonization, so to fight anthropogenic global warming. The hydrogen economy vector (ideally produced in water electrolysers using renewable electricity and transformed back into electricity in fuel cells), in parallel with the conversion of carbon dioxide and nitrogen gas into value-added products are seen as pillars of the so-called green and sustainable Energy Revolution. The hydrogen technologies presently attract increasing interest, their momentum growing irremediably in Europe, Asia and Americas. Here, this Virtual Special Issue (VSI) gathers the latest scientific results of major research laboratories worldwide, all addressing various aspects of electrochemical energy and material conversion processes.

Editorial: Themed issue on data-intensive water systems management and operation

The water sector increasingly looks at intensified instrumentation, data collection and automation as tools for daily use. Still, a massive opportunity remains to fully embrace emerging methods and technologies, such as artificial intelligence, data analytics, low-cost sensor hardware, and cloud computing. Indeed, sensing and automation technology has already infiltrated many facets of society. As such, the time is ripe to evaluate the role of novel technologies for systems monitoring, diagnostics, and automation of aquatic processes and large-scale water systems. When leveraged, the water sector will do more with less.

Guest Editorial: Planning and operation of resilient distribution system for integrated multi-energy

Resilience is the ability of power systems to prepare for and adapt to low-probability, high-impact incidents and withstand and recover rapidly from disruptions. With the ageing of electricity distribution infrastructure and increasing threats of weather-related incidents and natural disasters, the need to effectively enhance the resilience of the electricity distribution system has become urgent and has attracted worldwide attention. Although there are an increasing number of publications related to enhancing resilience strategies, resilience is an emerging concept in power systems. Existing practices are mostly focused on deploying distributed energy resources (DERs) and microgrids, hardening the existing infrastructures and building redundant capacities. However, from a broader perspective, resilience enhancement of power distribution system is a systematic engineering, involving long-term system planning and upgrading (e.g., deployment of smart grid technologies and intelligent switches), short-term proactive scheduling, real-time robust and resilient control of DERs, and post-event restoration and recovery strategies. Based on this point, this Special Issue in IET Energy System Integration focuses on soliciting the most recent and original technologies, scheduling and control strategies for improving the resilience of power distribution system. Eight papers are presented in this Special Issue, covering various aspects related to resilience enhancement of power distribution system, including fault-tolerant frequency measurement, robust scheduling of integrated electricity and district heating systems, robust control of DERs, efficient methods for safety verification as well as novel graph theory-based approach to restore the distribution systems after multiple simultaneous faults. A brief introduction of these 8 papers is provided below.

Guest Editorial: Advanced Data-Analytics for Power System Operation, Control, and Enhanced Situational Awareness

Along with the smart grid development, modern power systems are entering a ‘data-intensive’ era. A vast volume of data from power grids is being collected through advanced sensing and communication technologies, such as smart metering data, phasor measurement data, as well as meteorological data (e.g., wind speed and solar irradiance) related to renewable power generation. Such data contains comprehensive information about the power system covering equipment's health status, power grid's static and dynamic characteristics, renewable power generation, customers’ electricity usage pattern, etc. Therefore, advanced data-analytics techniques are needed to convert such data to knowledge for practical applications. In line with the trend of widespread data-driven applications in power systems, this Special Issue aims to present state-of-the-art research works on advanced data-analytics for power system's operation, control, and situational awareness. There are in total twenty-six papers accepted for publication in this Special Issue through careful peer reviews and revisions. Under the overarching theme of data-driven applications in power systems, the selected papers are broadly categorised into five topics. The summary of every topic is given below. You are, however, strongly encouraged to read the full paper if interested.

Editorial for the Collection "Preparatory Work for the American Wake Experiment (AWAKEN)"

The American WAKE experimeNt (AWAKEN) is a large field campaign focused on gathering observations for improved understanding of atmospheric and wind power plant flow physics, one of the outstanding needs for the wind energy community as described in the Science paper by Veers et al.1 "Grand challenges in wind energy." AWAKEN was planned over several years with an international consortium of numerous stakeholders, including national laboratories, academic researchers, wind turbine manufacturers, and wind farm operators. A highlight of the AWAKEN campaign is the extensive use of remote sensing instrumentation to characterize the atmosphere and its interactions with wind power plants, enabled by recent developments in lidar, radar, and thermodynamic profiling technology. Advanced modeling techniques like mesoscale and large-eddy simulations (LES) also played an important role in the preparation of the experiment and the interpretation of the experimental data collected. This special-topic issue for the Journal of Renewable and Sustainable Energy presents a collection of 12 papers that describe the preparatory work and some initial analyses from the AWAKEN campaign. An overview of the contents of the various papers in this special issue is provided in Sec. II.

Guest Editorial

The design of X-ray optical systems is very different from that of conventional optical systems, whether it be for the peculiarities of synchrotron radiation or the grazing incidence operation of most X-ray optical components. Further, specific simulation tools are thus required to ensure that designs work as expected, and there is now a vibrant landscape of open-source, freely available software that can be used to that end, and explore new design concepts.
