Of the three Mercury passes made by Mariner 10, the first and third went through the Mercury magnetosphere. The third encounter which occurred during northward IMF (interplanetary magnetic field) showed quiet time magnetic fields. In contrast the third encounter observed clear substorm signatures including dipolarization, field-aligned currents (FACs) and injection of energetic electrons at geosynchronous orbit. However, the determined cross-tail potential drop and the assumed height integrated conductance indicate that the FAC should be 2-50 times weaker than observed. We address this inconsistency and the fundamental problem of FAC closure whether this takes place in the regolith or in the exosphere. The current state of knowledge of the magnetosphere-exosphere/regolith coupling is addressed and similarities and differences to the Earth magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling are discussed.
The interaction of the solar wind with the earth magnetosphere is investigated theoretically by means of three-dimensional MHD simulations, with a focus on the effects of changes in the Bz component of the IMF. A high-resolution (0.5 earth radii) version of the model of Ogino et al. (1986) is employed, and the results are presented in a series of computer-generated maps and diagrams and characterized in detail. Bz of -5 nT is found to be associated with dipolar magnetic-field lines near the earth and very concave lines in the magnetotail, while Bz of +5 nT produces a narrow finger of closed field lines extending into the polar cap. Both IMF orientations have sunward convection near the noon-midnight meridian and region-1-type field-aligned currents on both sides of the plasma-sheet extension.
Electromagnetic radiation in the earth's magnetosphere was investigated for the frequency range between 10 kHz and 80 kHz, using data from the Minnesota Plasma Wave Experiment aboard the IMP 6 spacecraft. Two types of radio emissions were examined, the first being the nonthermal continuum radiation, and the second, much more impulsive, is the radiation which lies between 10 and 60 kHz. The first type of radiation was found to correlate with the enhancements of the magnetic substorm index AE and to follow the onset of the negative bay feature of the AU index by about 20 min. The second radiation was found to correlate with auroral kilometric radiation (AKR) on a time scale of about 1 min; this radiation was found to have a source direction very near that of the coincident AKR.

It is pointed out that the earth's magnetosphere arises from the interaction of the solar wind with the earth's geomagnetic field. A global magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) model of the earth's magnetosphere has drawn much attention in recent years. In this model, MHD equations are used to describe the solar wind interaction with the magnetosphere. In the present paper, some numerical aspects of the model are considered. Attention is given to the ideal MHD equations, an equation of state for the plasma, the model as an initial- and boundary-value problem, the shock capturing technique, computational requirements and techniques for global MHD modeling, a three-dimensional mesh system employed in the global MHD model, and some computational results.
