Phase transitions of correlations in black hole geometries

We study the holographic realization of optimized correlation measures—measures of quantum correlation that generalize elementary entropic formulas—in two-dimensional thermal states dual to spacetimes with a black hole horizon. We consider the symmetric bipartite optimized correlation measures: the entanglement of purification, Q-correlation, R-correlation, and squashed entanglement, as well as the mutual information, a nonoptimized correlation measure, and identify the bulk surface configurations realizing their geometric duals over the parameter space of boundary region sizes and the black hole radius. This parameter space is divided into phases associated with given topologies for these bulk surface configurations, and first-order phase transitions occur as a new topology of bulk surfaces becomes preferred. The distinct phases can be associated with different degrees of correlation between the boundary regions and the thermal environment. The Q-correlation has the richest behavior, with a structure of nested optimizations leading to two topologically distinct bulk surface configurations being equally valid as geometric duals at generic points in the phase diagram.

Panoramic Mapping of Phonon Transport from Ultrafast Electron Diffraction and Scientific Machine Learning

Abstract One central challenge in understanding phonon thermal transport is a lack of experimental tools to investigate frequency‐resolved phonon transport. Although recent advances in computation lead to frequency‐resolved information, it is hindered by unknown defects in bulk regions and at interfaces. Here, a framework that can uncover microscopic phonon transport information in heterostructures is presented, integrating state‐of‐the‐art ultrafast electron diffraction (UED) with advanced scientific machine learning (SciML). Taking advantage of the dual temporal and reciprocal‐space resolution in UED, and the ability of SciML to solve inverse problems involving coupled Boltzmann transport equations, the frequency‐dependent interfacial transmittance and frequency‐dependent relaxation times of the heterostructure from the diffraction patterns are reliably recovered. The framework is applied to experimental Au/Si UED data, and a transport pattern beyond the diffuse mismatch model is revealed, which further enables a direct reconstruction of real‐space, real‐time, frequency‐resolved phonon dynamics across the interface. The work provides a new pathway to probe interfacial phonon transport mechanisms with unprecedented details.

First Search for Dark Sector 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − Explanations of the MiniBooNE Anomaly at MicroBooNE

We present MicroBooNE’s first search for dark sector 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − explanations of the long-standing MiniBooNE anomaly. The MiniBooNE anomaly has garnered significant attention over the past 20 years including previous MicroBooNE investigations into both anomalous electron and photon excesses, but its origin still remains unclear. In this Letter, we provide the first direct test of dark sector models in which dark neutrinos, produced through neutrino-induced scattering, decay into missing energy and visible 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − pairs comprising the MiniBooNE anomaly. Many such models have recently gained traction as a viable solution to the anomaly while evading past bounds. Using an exposure of 6.87 × 10 20 protons-on-target in the Booster Neutrino Beam, we implement a selection targeting forward-going, coherently produced 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − events. After unblinding, we observe 95 events, which we compare with the constrained background-only prediction of 69.7 ±17.3. This analysis sets the world’s first direct limits on these dark sector models and, at the 95% confidence level, excludes the entirety of the single dark neutrino and majority of the dual dark neutrino, parameter space that is viable as a solution to the MiniBooNE anomaly.

The Effect of DPC Fillers on FEPs Relevant to Disposal of SNF

The US Department of Energy (DOE) is investigating the use of different materials that could be used to fill the void space inside a dual-purpose canister (DPC) loaded with spent nuclear fuel (SNF) just before it is emplaced in a deep geologic repository. The purpose of adding filler material is to maintain subcritical conditions in the repository during the postclosure period, which can span up to 1,000,000 years. Several types of materials have been proposed, including metals, cements, particulates, and glass. Part of this investigation addresses how the presence of filler material inside a DPC will affect the performance of the repository with respect to the repository features; the consequences of events that may occur; and the multiple thermal, hydrologic, chemical, and mechanical processes that may occur in a deep geologic repository over long timescales. This report describes some of the filler materials that have been proposed and studied; identifies 11 features, 6 events, and 25 processes that may be affected by the presence of filler materials; and discusses the effects that may require consideration for each feature, event, or process. The results of this study can be used to direct appropriate research and to develop suitable models if the DOE decides to use fillers to maintain subcritical conditions in DPCs used to dispose of SNF.

Datasets for Widespread Residential Space Heating Electrification in Texas

In this experiment, we explore long term patterns in electricity demand driven by the dual effects of full electrification of space heating in Texas (by adoption of electric heat pumps), and climate change. We use a predictive model of electricity demand, climate projections, and an open source nodal power system (DC Optimal Power Flow) model of the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) system. Heat pumps are a more energy efficient way of providing space heating and cooling in homes. We attempt to exhaustively investigate the impacts of full residential space heating electrification by adoption of heat pumps for the segment of Texas households that currently rely on fossil fuels (about 40%), while simultaneously incorporating climate change meteorological variables. We explore a range of scenarios of heat pump efficiency and climate uncertainty over a long period of future years (2020-2099). In total, the simulation experiment generates 1,280 simulation years of hourly data. We report and analyze results in form of impacts on residential load, total load, peak load, seasonality of peaking, and reliability measured by occurrence and frequency of loss of load events. While the experiment is for ERCOT, the insights and approach can be applied to other regions. The results from the analysis can inform system planners on a range of potential capacity requirements/ reliability implications and/or risks of full space heating electrification via the adoption of electric heat pumps, given the uncertainty in the scenarios/ climate futures. The dataset includes model output for residential, non residential and total load, and the results from the GO ERCOT model runs for 4 RCP Scenarios (RCP 4.5 Cooler, RCP 4.5 Hotter, RCP 8.5 Cooler, RCP 8.5 Hotter), 4 Heating electrification Scenarios (Base , Standard Efficiency HP, High Efficiency HP, Ultra-High Efficiency HP) over 80 years (2020-2099). The metrological variables at BA scale were weighted weighted using population projections consistent with the SSP3 scenario.

The O(N) S-matrix monolith

We consider the scattering matrices of massive quantum field theories with no bound states and a global O(N) symmetry in two spacetime dimensions. In particular we explore the space of two-to-two S-matrices of particles of mass m transforming in the vector representation as restricted by the general conditions of unitarity, crossing, analyticity and O(N) symmetry. We found a rich structure in that space by using convex maximization and in particular its convex dual minimization problem. At the boundary of the allowed space special geometric points such as vertices were found to correspond to integrable models. The dual convex minimization problem provides a novel and useful approach to the problem allowing, for example, to prove that generically the S-matrices so obtained saturate unitarity and, insome cases, that they are at vertices of the allowed space.

Hydronic Shell: An Affordable Solution for Multifamily Deep Energy Retrofit

Approximately 42% of multi-family buildings in the United States have do not have insulation as required by the building codes. Envelope retrofits of these buildings are needed to improve their thermal performance, provide thermal resilience, and enable a pathway to electrification of space heating systems. Hydronic shell (HS) is a retrofit technique where a stud wall layer is added to a masonry wall along with a convective coil and a fan coil unit fitted in the façade cavity which can provide both heating and cooling to the space. The HS system serves a dual purpose of 1) retrofitting the building envelope and 2) retrofitting the HVAC system and enabling electrification of space heating. The electrification of space heating is possible from the installation of a combination of hydronic system/fan coil unit system which uses a central heat pump as a source of heating water in the cavity between the existing wall and retrofit insulation layer. This study evaluates the performance of the HS system at varying outdoor conditions mimicked by a climate chamber and hot water supply temperature from a water bath. During the ramp-up period, the indoor chamber temperature could be increased from 66 ºF to 69.5 ºF within an hour using heating water at 120 ºF when the outdoor chamber temperature was at 0 ºF. When the indoor chamber temperature was maintained within a deadband, variation in cavity air temperature was mostly influenced by the duration when water was flowing through the cavity convector. It was seen from the testing that the hydronic system alone without use of fan in the system is able to maintain the space temperature at coldest outdoor condition used in the experiment (0 ºF) even at lowest hot water supply temperature chosen (90 ºF). During the ramp-down period, the fastest decline in temperature took 6.4 hours from temperature to drop from 69.6 ºF to 66 ºF which shows tremendous potential of thermal resilience and peak load shifting.

Chern-Simons invariants from ensemble averages

We discuss ensemble averages of two-dimensional conformal field theories associated with an arbitrary indefinite lattice with integral quadratic form Q. We provide evidence that the holographic dual after the ensemble average is the three-dimensional Abelian Chern-Simons theory with kinetic term determined by Q. The resulting partition function can be written as a modular form, expressed as a sum over the partition functions of Chern-Simons theories on lens spaces. For odd lattices, the dual bulk theory is a spin Chern-Simons theory, and we identify several novel phenomena in this case. We also discuss the holographic duality prior to averaging in terms of Maxwell-Chern-Simons theories.

Burns space and holography

We elaborate on various aspects of our top-down celestial holographic duality wherein the semiclassical bulk spacetime is a 4d asymptotically flat, self-dual Kähler geometry known as Burns space. The bulk theory includes an open string sector comprising a 4d WZW model and a closed string sector called “Mabuchi gravity” capturing fluctuations of the Kähler potential. Starting with the type I topological B-model on the twistor space of flat space, we obtain the twistor space of Burns space from the backreaction of a stack of N coincident D1 branes, while the chiral algebra is obtained from (a twist of) the brane worldvolume theory. One striking consequence of this duality is that all loop-level scattering amplitudes of the theory on Burns space can be expressed as correlation functions of an explicit 2d chiral algebra.

Celestial dual superconformal symmetry, MHV amplitudes and differential equations

Celestial and momentum space amplitudes for massless particles are related to each other by a change of basis provided by the Mellin transform. Therefore properties of celestial amplitudes have counterparts in momentum space amplitudes and vice versa. In this paper, we study the celestial avatar of dual superconformal symmetry of $\mathcal{N}$ = 4 Yang-Mills theory. We also analyze various differential equations known to be satisfied by celestial n-point tree-level MHV amplitudes and identify their momentum space origins.

Validation of a Co-Optimized, Smart Hybrid Heat Pump Control

This study examines a residential dual fuel (DF) heating system that integrates heat pump and gas furnace technology with a home’s forced-air distribution ducts. Specifically, it explores a retrofit where an “add-on” heat pump replaces the air conditioning (A/C) system and is combined with the home’s existing furnace and air handler. The research team developed and validated an innovative control scheme for this integrated DF system that selected the more economical heating source (furnace or heat pump) while maintaining comfort in the home. The project’s field study and subsequent modeling analysis show that this control scheme can decrease energy use, cost, and emissions compared to a furnace-only system. As homes in mixed and cold climates transition to more electric space heating, furnace-to-dual fuel system retrofits offer a solution that can alleviate the retrofit costs, energy cost concerns, and peak load impacts of full electrification.

S-matrix bootstrap in 3+1 dimensions: regularization and dual convex problem

The S-matrix bootstrap maps out the space of S-matrices allowed by analyticity, crossing, unitarity, and other constraints. For the 2 → 2 scattering matrix S 2→2 such space is an infinite dimensional convex space whose boundary can be determined by maximizing linear functionals. On the boundary interesting theories can be found, many times at vertices of the space. Here we consider 3 + 1 dimensional theories and focus on the equivalent dual convex minimization problem that provides strict upper bounds for the regularized primal problem and has interesting practical and physical advantages over the primal problem. Its variables are dual partial waves k ℓ (s) that are free variables, namely they do not have to obey any crossing, unitarity or other constraints. Nevertheless they are directly related to the partial waves f ℓ (s), for which all crossing, unitarity and symmetry properties result from the minimization. Numerically, it requires only a few dual partial waves, much as one wants to possibly match experimental results. We consider the case of scalar fields which is related to pion physics.

Curving the space by non-Hermiticity

Quantum systems are often classified into Hermitian and non-Hermitian ones. Extraordinary non-Hermitian phenomena, ranging from the non-Hermitian skin effect to the supersensitivity to boundary conditions, have been widely explored. Whereas these intriguing phenomena have been considered peculiar to non-Hermitian systems, we show that they can be naturally explained by a duality between non-Hermitian models in flat spaces and their counterparts, which could be Hermitian, in curved spaces. For instance, prototypical one-dimensional (1D) chains with uniform chiral tunnelings are equivalent to their duals in two-dimensional (2D) hyperbolic spaces with or without magnetic fields, and non-uniform tunnelings could further tailor local curvatures. Such a duality unfolds deep geometric roots of non-Hermitian phenomena, delivers an unprecedented routine connecting Hermitian and non-Hermitian physics, and gives rise to a theoretical perspective reformulating our understandings of curvatures and distance. In practice, it provides experimentalists with a powerful two-fold application, using non-Hermiticity to engineer curvatures or implementing synthetic curved spaces to explore non-Hermitian quantum physics.

Generalized symmetries of the graviton

We find the set of generalized symmetries associated with the free graviton theory in four dimensions. These are generated by gauge invariant topological operators that violate Haag duality in ring-like regions. As expected from general QFT grounds, we find a set of “electric” and a dual set of “magnetic” topological operators and compute their algebra. To do so, we describe the theory using phase space gauge-invariant electric and magnetic dual variables constructed out of the curvature tensor. Electric and magnetic fields satisfy a set of constraints equivalent to the ones of a stress tensor of a 3d CFT. The constraints give place to a group $\mathbb{R}^{20}$ of topological operators that are charged under space-time symmetries. Finally, we discuss similarities and differences between linearized gravity and tensor gauge theories that have been introduced recently in the context of fractonic systems in condensed matter physics.

Interacting chiral form field theories and $$ T\overline{T} $$-like flows in six and higher dimensions

Abstract In this paper we initiate the study of six-dimensional non-linear chiral two-form gauge theories as deformations of free chiral two-form gauge theories driven by stress-tensor$$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ -like flows. To lay the background for this study, we elaborate on the relationship between different Lagrangian formulations of duality-invariantp-form theories and corresponding$$ T\overline{T} $$ T T ¯ -like flows in various dimensions. To this end we propose a new formulation which (i) is a generalization of the four-dimensional construction by Ivanov, Nurmagambetov and Zupnik (INZ) and (ii) turns into the PST formulation upon integrating out an auxiliary self-dual field. We elucidate space-time covariant properties of the PST formulation by clarifying and making use of its relation to the INZ-type formulation and to a so-called “clone” construction.

Open momentum space method for the Hofstadter butterfly and the quantized Lorentz susceptibility

Here we develop a generic k ∙ p open momentum space method for calculating the Hofstadter butterfly of both continuum (moiré) models and tight-binding models, where the quasimomentum is directly substituted by the Landau level (LL) operators. By taking a LL cutoff (and a reciprocal lattice cutoff for continuum models), one obtains the Hofstadter butterfly with in-gap spectral flows. For continuum models such as the moiré model for twisted bilayer graphene, our method gives a sparse Hamiltonian, making it much more efficient than existing methods. The spectral flows in the Hofstadter gaps can be understood as edge states on a momentum space boundary, from which one can determine the two integers (t ν , s ν ) of a gap ν satisfying the Diophantine equation. The spectral flows can also be removed to obtain a clear Hofstadter butterfly. While t ν is known as the Chern number, our theory identifies s ν as a dual Chern number for the momentum space, which corresponds to a quantized Lorentz susceptibility γ xy = eBs ν .

The lion, the witch, and the wormhole: ensemble averaging the symmetric product orbifold

Abstract We consider the ensemble average of two dimensional symmetric product orbifold CFTs Sym N (𝕋 D ) over the Narain moduli space. We argue for a bulk dual given byNcopies of an abelian Chern-Simons theory coupled to topological gravity, endowed with a discrete gauge symmetry exchanging theNcopies. As a check of this proposal, we calculate the ensemble average of various partition and correlation functions of the symmetric product orbifold theory and compare the resulting expressions to gauge theory quantities in the bulk. We comment on the ensemble average of the tensionless string partition function on AdS 3 × S 3 × 𝕋 4 by considering the specific case ofD= 4 with the addition of supersymmetry.

The Newman-Penrose map and the classical double copy

Gauge-gravity duality is arguably our best hope for understanding quantum gravity. Considerable progress has been made in relating scattering amplitudes in certain gravity theories to those in gauge theories — a correspondence dubbed the double copy. Recently, double copies have also been realized in a classical setting, as maps between exact solutions of gauge theories and gravity. We present here a novel map between a certain class of real, exact solutions of Einstein’s equations and self-dual solutions of the flat-space vacuum Maxwell equations. This map, which we call the Newman-Penrose map, is well-defined even for non-vacuum, non-stationary spacetimes, providing a systematic framework for exploring gravity solutions in the context of the double copy that have not been previously studied in this setting. To illustrate this, we present here the Newman- Penrose map for the Schwarzschild and Kerr black holes, and Kinnersley’s photon rocket.
