Direct-Write Printing on Three-Dimensional Geometries for Miniaturized Detector and Electronic Assemblies

Direct-write printing techniques will enable new detector assemblies that were not previously possible with traditional assembly processes. Detector concepts were manufactured using this technology to validate repeatability. Additional detector applications and printed wires on a 3-dimensional magnetometer bobbin will be designed for print. This effort focuses on evaluating performance for direct-write manufacturing techniques on 3-dimensional surfaces. Direct-write manufacturing has the potential to reduce mass and volume for fabrication and assembly of advanced detector concepts by reducing trace widths down to 10 microns, printing on complex geometries, allowing new electronic concept production, and reduced production times of complex those electronics.

Self Assembled Structures by Directional Solidification of Eutectics

Interest in ordered porous structures has grown because of there unique properties such as photonic bandgaps, high backing packing density and high surface to volume ratio. Inspired by nature, biometric strategies using self assembled organic molecules dominate the development of hierarchical inorganic structures. Directional solidification of eutectics (DSE) also exhibit self assembly characteristics to form hierarchical metallic and inorganic structures. Crystallization of diphasic materials by DSE can produce two dimensional ordered structures consisting of rods or lamella. By selective removal of phases, DSE is capable to fabricate ordered pore arrays or ordered pin arrays. Criteria and limitations to fabricate hierarchical structures will be presented. Porous structures in silicon base alloys and ceramic systems will be reported.

Parametric analysis of RF communications and tracking systems for manned space stations

System performance, system interface compatibility, and system management and operations are analyzed for external and internal communications provided by the modular space station. Mathematical models are utilized to evaluate performances of the various communication links between the MSS and the tracking and data relay satellites, the shuttle, and the ground stations. Communication control design requirements are determined from overall MSS control design and checkout requirements are developed in a related systems study. Parallel design efforts consider equipment configurations for the external communication assembly baseband and the internal communication assembly to accommodate signal transfer and control. The recommended baseline design considers also interfaces between equipment groups and the critical functional and signal characteristics of these interfaces. The data processing assembly has direct communication circuits to the external communication assembly and the control interface is provided via a digital data bus and a remote acquisition and control unit.

S-NPP VIIRS Solar Diffuser Degradation at the View Direction of the Rotating Telescope Assembly

S-NPP VIIRS has been on-orbit for more than nine years since it was launched on October28th,2011. The VIIRS reflective solar bands (RSBs) are calibrated on-orbit primarily by an onboard solar diffuser (SD). The SD on-orbit degradation is tracked by an onboard SD stability monitor(SDSM). The VIIRS RSBs view the SD through a rotating telescope assembly (RTA). The RTA views the SD from a direction that is quite different from that of the SDSM. It has been shown that the SD degrades non-uniformly with respect to the incident and outgoing directions, especially at the short wavelengths. Thus, the SDSM calibration cannot provide an accurate SD degradation estimation for the view direction of the RTA, resulting in long-term drifts in the calibration coefficients derived from the SD and SDSM calibration. S-NPP VIIRS has been scheduled to view the Moon approximately monthly since its launch. The lunar observations can provide accurate long-term trends for the RSB calibration coefficients since the lunar surface reflectance is quite stable. By comparing the SD and lunar calibration results, we can obtain the SD degradation differences at the view directions of the SDSM and RTA and derive the SD degradation at the view direction of the RTA. Moreover, we can also derive the SD degradation in the short-wave infrared (SWIR) spectral range, wherein the SDSM cannot track the SD degradation. In this paper, we will derive the SD degradation for the view direction of the RTA from the SD, SDSM, and lunar calibrations from the visible to SWIR spectral range. We will also simulate the SD degradation with analytical models and compare their performances.

Planning Assembly Of Large Truss Structures In Outer Space

Report dicusses developmental algorithm used in systematic planning of sequences of operations in which large truss structures assembled in outer space. Assembly sequence represented by directed graph called "assembly graph", in which each arc represents joining of two parts or subassemblies. Algorithm generates assembly graph, working backward from state of complete assembly to initial state, in which all parts disassembled. Working backward more efficient than working forward because it avoids intermediate dead ends.

Solar Stirling power generation - Systems analysis and preliminary tests

The feasibility of an electric power generation system utilizing a sun-tracking parabolic concentrator and a Stirling engine/linear alternator is being evaluated. Performance predictions and cost analysis of a proposed large distributed system are discussed. Design details and preliminary test results are presented for a 9.5 ft diameter parabolic dish at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Caltech) Table Mountain Test Facility. Low temperature calorimetric measurements were conducted to evaluate the concentrator performance, and a helium flow system is being used to test the solar receiver at anticipated working fluid temperatures (up to 650 or 1200 C) to evaluate the receiver thermal performance. The receiver body is designed to adapt to a free-piston Stirling engine which powers a linear alternator assembly for direct electric power generation. During the next phase of the program, experiments with an engine and receiver integrated into the concentrator assembly are planned.

Supervised Autonomous Assembly to Create and Evolve Persistent Assets

Supervised autonomous assembly (SAA) will create a paradigm shift in the planning and design of future persistent assets (PAs), both in near zero-g environments and on planetary surfaces. SAA refers to an autonomy approach that has the benefits of autonomous assembly as well as the benefits provided by a supervisor (operator) who is available to resolve unexpected situations. SAA provides both increased design freedom as well as reduced programmatic risk. SAA enables evolution of future PAs over decades as in-space operations transition from single purpose missions to creation of PAs, such as laboratories and experimental stations which more closely resembling terrestrial laboratories that can easily adapt and evolve to new missions leveraging repeated visits to the PA. The ability to evolve enables PAs to rapidly respond to changing objectives resulting from new questions as our understanding improves. A recently initiated National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) project in the Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD) Game Changing Development (GCD) Program called the Precision Assembled Space Structure (PASS), leverages the advantages of SAA to develop technologies that enable efficient creation and evolution of hexagonal topologies; both planar (example: fuel depots) and curved (examples: telescopes and shelters). PASS will be used to provide context for the philosophy and concepts discussed as well as the decision and selections made. PASS objectives are: a) Develop confidence in SAA and on-orbit servicing, assembly and manufacturing (OSAM) technologies by executing a test campaign that uses a path-to-flight autonomous precision assembly process directly applicable to future space telescopes. b) Test autonomous technologies including automated path planning and error recovery, to emphasize a robust approach that relies on generic robots and special purpose tools. c) Validate critical component models using a digital twin that includes the assembled primary mirror support structure and assembly process. A digital twin is a high-fidelity simulation of the asset capable of predicting the on-orbit performance. The paper concludes after identifying the critical need for a modest assembly flight experiment to validate and develop confidence in the SAA paradigm, thus accelerating adoption of the benefits described. SAA is a game changing paradigm that enhances the ability of an organization to infuse new technology through rapid evolution of PAs while leveraging OSAM technologies.

Emergence of Simple Ion Channels by Self-Assembly of Short Peptides

As protocells transitioned from structures bound by membranes made of simple amphiphiles, such as fatty acids, to structures containing phospholipid membranes, they became nearly impermeable to charged species. Yet, the ability to transport ions across membranes was vital to regulating cellular volume, pH homeostasis, generating energy and sensing the environment. For this reason, life evolved ion channels, protein structures surrounding water-filled pores in the membrane that facilitated ion transport. In contemporary cells, ion channels are complex protein assemblies. Could the same function be carried out, even if less efficiently and selectively, by much simpler peptides at the origins of life? To answer this question, we turned to trichogen (GAIV), an 11-residue peptide that was found to permeabilize membrane, causing leakage of the vesicle content including ions. Since GAIV is synthesized non-gnomically, it represents as excellent model for the earliest, poorly optimized channels. Understanding the mechanism by which short peptides, such as GAIV, mediate ion transport across membranes provides crucial information on the emergence, structure and the mechanism of action of the earliest ion channels. In this study, we used extensive molecular dynamics (MD) simulations to investigate directly spontaneous assembly of GAIV peptide and its structural dynamics, the formation of an induced water pore across the membrane and consequently ion conduction through the membrane.

The influence of acceleration forces on nucleation, solidification, and deformation processes in tin single crystals

An apparatus was designed and assembled to directionally solidify single crystals under the influence of acceleration forces of various magnitudes. The investigation conducted showed that acceleration gradients produce a preferred growth orientation effect not previously observed for tin. Convection currents at approximately 5-g encourage multiple nucleation and subsequent random orientation of growth direction. Deformation effects such as recrystallization and twinning are observed at acceleration levels greater than 2-g.
