Ultrasensitive Human Radiation Dosimetry

The problem we are addressing concerns the astronauts, and their exposure to radiation during spaceflight. The amount of this radiation is a variable depending on solar events and orbital characteristics. Our goal is to measure the total integrated quantity of radiation damage to the cell nucleus in astronauts or other people exposed to radiation. In my lab, we are turning up the microscope from the level of the chromosome, about eight orders of magnitude, to the molecular level. It is well known that radiation causes DNA and chromosome damage. We are developing methods to measure a specific molecular lesion. The lesion that we have selected to measure is thymidine diol, which is created by hydroxyl radicals adding across the 5.6 double bond of thymidine in DNA.

Isocyanate Cross-Linked Silica: Structurally Strong Aerogels

Molecular-level synergism between the silica nanoparticles of pre-formed monoliths and molecular cross-linkers inverts the relative host-guest roles in glass-polymer composites, leading to new strong low-density materials. Attempts to load gels with variable amounts of polyurethane precursors such as di-ISO and diol end-capped polybutylene adipate followed by heat treatment, washing, and supercritical drying led to opaque materials, somewhat stronger than silica but still quite brittle and much inferior to the materials described above. Direct mixing of a diisocyanate and an alcohol-free sol has been attempted recently by Yim et al. Reportedly, that procedure leads to week-long gelation times and requires an at least equally long aging period. In our attempt to add various amounts of di-ISO in a base-catalyzed sol in PC, we also noticed a week-long gelation time. The resulting aerogels were translucent but no less brittle than native silica. According to more recent studies, if propylene carbonate is replaced with acetone, it leads not only to shorter processing times, but also to much stronger gels that can tolerate loads in excess of 40 kg in the arrangement presented. We attribute that behavior to the lower viscosity of acetone, that allows faster diffusion of the di-ISO solution within the pores before di-ISO has time to react with the surface of silica. Further studies are underway to vary the chemical identity of the diisocyanate, as well as the composition and density of silica.

Ferrocene Containing Copolymers with Improved Electrostatic Dissipation Properties for Advanced Applications

Electrostatic dissipative polymers are used for a variety of functions. Typical methods utilized to transform electrically insulating polymers into either charge dissipative or conductive materials involve incorporating a conductive filler, conductive polymer, oxidizing the surface using plasma, or incorporating surfactants that act as surface wetting agents. Another approach is to synthesize a block copolymer that is expected to result in better electrical properties with minimal impacts to physical, fire, and thermal properties. One such block that can be added into the main chain of polymers is a diol terminated ferrocene oligomer, which is expected to impart electrostatic dissipative properties into the host polymer while concurrently improving the overall fire properties. Previous work with polyurethanes incorporating a ferrocene oligomer into the main chain resulted in much improved fire retardancy. In dealing with electrostatic dissipative materials the important questions are: how easily does the material charge and how quickly can the charge move to ground. One normally describes the materials conductivity, but conductivity only measures the fastest path for an electron not the slowest path. The slowest path is the one of interest, since it is left on the surface and thus can cause discharges. In order to assess ease of charging and decay times corona charge dissipation measurements can accurately assess these properties by introducing a charge on the surface of the material then measuring the surface voltage and the amount of charge deposited. The charge decay curve then will give an indication of a materials electrostatic dissipation properties. Normally, triboelectric testing can be performed, but results vary. Corona charge dissipation results are more repeatable.

Instrument for Solvent Extraction and Analysis (ISEE) of Organics from Regolith Simulant Using Supercritical Fluid Extraction and Chromatography

ISEE is an instrument with the potential to perform extractions from regolith found on the surface of asteroids and planets, followed by characterization and quantitation of the extracts using supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) and chromatography (SFC). SFE is a developed technique proven to extract a wide range of organic compounds. SFC is similar to High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) but has the advantage of performing chiral separations without needing to derivatize the chiral compounds. CO2 will be the solvent for both stages as it is readily available in the Mars atmosphere. ISEE will capture CO2 from the environment, and use it for SFE and SFC. If successful, this would allow ISEE to perform analysis of organic compounds without using consumables. This paper will present results on a preliminary, proof-of-principle effort to use SFE and SFC to extract and analyze lunar regolith simulant spiked with organic compounds representing a range of organics that ISEE would expect to characterize. An optimization of variables for the extraction of the organics from the spiked regolith was successfully developed, using 138 bar pressure and 40 C temperature. The extraction flow rate was optimized at 2% SLPM with 30% methanol modifier. The extractions were successful with a value of 77.3+/- 0.9% of organics extracted. However, the recovery of organics after the extraction was very low with only 48.5+/-14.2%. Moreover, three columns were selected to analyze multiple samples at a time; two of them are Viridis HSS C18 SB and Torus DIOL, and the third column, specific for chiral separations, has not yet been selected yet.
