Habitat Design Considerations for Implementing Solar Particle Event Radiation Protection

Radiation protection is an important habitat design consideration for human exploration missions beyond Low Earth Orbit. Fortunately, radiation shelter concepts can effectively reduce astronaut exposure for the relatively low proton energies of solar particle events, enabling moderate duration missions of several months before astronaut exposure (galactic cosmic ray and solar particle event) approaches radiation exposure limits. In order to minimize habitat mass for increasingly challenging missions, design of radiation shelters must minimize dedicated, single-purpose shielding mass by leveraging the design and placement of habitat subsystems, accommodations, and consumables. NASA's Advanced Exploration Systems RadWorks Storm Shelter Team has recently designed and performed radiation analysis on several low dedicated mass shelter concepts for a year-long mission. This paper describes habitat design considerations identified during the study's radiation analysis. These considerations include placement of the shelter within a habitat for improved protection, integration of human factors guidance for sizing shelters, identification of potential opportunities for habitat subsystems to compromise on individual subsystem performances for overall vehicle mass reductions, and pre-configuration of shelter components for reduced deployment times.

Aerothermodynamic design considerations of an aerobraked spacecraft

The major aerothermodynamic design issues that influenced the VOIR (Venus Orbiting Image Radar) airbrake and mission design are discussed. In the discussion of aerobrake heating, it is pointed out that the heat transfer to the deployed aerobrake is a function of the flow regime encountered during the periapsis pass, the perapsis altitude, and the brake surface geometry. The discussion of spacecraft thermal protection encompasses separated flow heating, aerobrake backface radiation, total solar cell heating, and undeployed aerobrake effects. The aerobrake is designed to protect the spacecraft thermally by limiting the integrated entry heating to the critical solar cell arrays (located on three sides of the spacecraft) due to flow impingement heating, separated flow heating, and backface radiation heating. It is explained that these design considerations led to the selection of a flat-faced aerobrake design located on the front of the spacecraft to provide maximum spacecraft thermal protection. The 8.4-m equivalent diameter aerobrake eliminates direct flow impingement heating and lowers separated flow heating on the spacecraft.

Design Considerations and Analysis of Multi-Level Erasure Coding in Large-Scale Data Centers

Multi-level erasure coding (MLEC) has seen large deployments in the field, but there is no in-depth study of design considerations for MLEC at scale. In this paper, we provide comprehensive design considerations and analysis of MLEC at scale. We introduce the design space of MLEC in multiple dimensions, including various code parameter selections, chunk placement schemes, and various repair methods. We quantify their performance and durability, and show which MLEC schemes and repair methods can provide the best tolerance against independent/correlated failures and reduce repair network traffic by orders of magnitude. To achieve this, we use various evaluation strategies including simulation, splitting, dynamic programming, and mathematical modeling. We also compare the performance and durability of MLEC with other EC schemes such as SLEC and LRC and show that MLEC can provide high durability with higher encoding throughput and less repair network traffic over both SLEC and LRC.

A New Design Consideration for Bidirectional Resonant Converters

This paper introduces innovative design considerations for a bidirectional resonant converter, optimized for Electric Vehicle (EV) charging and vehicle-togrid (V2G) applications. By eliminating the need for complex voltage or current gain functions, the proposed design greatly simplifies the development process, making it more accessible for manufacturers and system integrators. This approach not only reduces engineering time and resource investment but also accelerates time-to-market, giving stakeholders a competitive edge in rapidly expanding EV infrastructure markets. In addition, the streamlined design ensures soft switching at maximum output power, leading to higher efficiency and improved durability, which translates to lower operating costs and a longer service life for EV charging equipment. These benefits provide a clear pathway to more cost-effective, scalable, and sustainable EV charging and V2G solutions, enhancing value for stakeholders by facilitating smoother integration into the grid and supporting energy resilience. To validate the benefits, a 60 kW bidirectional charger with a flexible input range of 700−900VDC and an output range of 400−1250VDC was developed, underscoring the design's adaptability and potential for large-scale implementation.

The spacecraft structure and thermal design considerations

This paper covers the general structural and thermal design considerations of the Telstar satellite. The basic objectives were to maintain the electronic components in a near room temperature environment and to protect the electronics packge from high-frequency vibration excitation. These objectives were realized by dividing satellite into two lumped masses, the shell and the centrally located electronics package, and by utilizing nylon lacing for support of the electronics package. The package was provided with an active temperature control, regulating radiative heat flow between the skin and the package. Results of on-the-ground experimental evaluation and of telemetry data are given.

Design Considerations for the Field Use of International Nuclear Safeguards Technology

The process of developing and deploying safeguards technology should be carried out in such a way that it supports the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA’s) international safeguards verification mission, while also being efficient in terms of both cost and time. This process, however, may be hindered by a general lack of nuclear facility operating experience among the scientists or engineers designing safeguards technology, or the inability to interact with the IAEA inspector end user. As a result, equipment designers may have difficulty understanding inspector needs and the limitations of using safeguards technology in the field, often leading to inefficiencies (in the form of increased cost and time spent) in the safeguards technology design process. Here, to mitigate this knowledge gap, the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, has developed design considerations that should be incorporated into safeguards technologies, focusing on non-destructive assay equipment. Timelines for integration of these considerations into the design process are also discussed.

Design considerations for a HE-3 refrigerator for space applications

The low temperature provided by He-3 refrigerators (0.3 to 3 K) have useful space applications. However, the low temperatures and the low surface tension of He-3 require special design considerations. The considerations include the need for small pores to contain the liquid in a matrix; the effects of bubble nucleation and growth; and the effects of the thermal conductivity within the matrix. These design considerations are discussed and a possible confinement system is analyzed.
