Residual fluctuations in the matter and radiation distribution after the decoupling epoch

The residual spectra of matter and radiation fluctuations in the early universe are investigated, and the evolution of primordial adiabatic and isothermal fluctuations through the decoupling epoch is studied. Amplification of adiabatic density fluctuations during decoupling, or velocity 'overshoot', is largely suppressed by Compton drag. Consequently, the amplitude of density fluctuations entering the horizon prior to decoupling is larger than hitherto assumed in the adiabatic theory. Damping of primordial adiabatic density fluctuations by an order of magnitude occurs on mass-scales of 3 x 10 to the 13th solar masses (Omega = 1) or 10 to the 14th solar masses (Omega = 0.2). Comparison of the residual radiation fluctuations with observational limits indicates that the adiabatic theory is only acceptable if re-ionization of the intergalactic medium results in additional scattering of the radiation after decoupling. Primordial isothermal fluctuations are found to yield radiation fluctuations which are insensitive to the assumed spectrum and lie a factor of about 5 below current limits

Design of the annular suspension and pointing system /ASPS/ through decoupling and pole placement

A decoupling and pole-placement technique has been developed for the Annular Suspension and Pointing System (ASPS) of the Space Shuttle which uses bandwidths as performance criteria. The dynamics of the continuous-data ASPS allows the three degrees of freedom to be totally decoupled by state feedback through constant gains, so that the bandwidth of each degree of freedom can be independently specified without interaction. Although it is found that the digital ASPS cannot be completely decoupled, the bandwidth requirements are satisfied by pole placement and a trial-and-error method based on approximate decoupling.

Design and fabrication of the NASA decoupler pylon for the F-16 aircraft, addendum 1

The results of the final analyses which were conducted using a revised structural simulation of the Decoupler Pylon are reported in this addendum. The simulation incorporates the previously published results of ground tests performed on the flight Decoupler Pylons mounted in a test fixture at General Dynamic's Fort Worth facility. The analyses show that the Decoupler Pylon will suppress wing-store flutter for the GBU-8 flight test stores configuration on an F-16 airplane. The feasibility of carrying a B-61 on the pylons is also investigated with the conclusion that the pylons would need to be modified in order to demonstrate flutter suppression. The results of a ground vibration test performed on the 1/4 scale F-16 flutter model and a wind tunnel test with this model and a model Decoupler Pylon are given.

An Investigation in the Ames 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel of a YT-56A Turboprop Engine Incorporating a Decoupler and a Controlled-Feathering Device

An investigation of a decoupler and a controlled-feathering device incorporated with the YT-56A turboprop engine has been made to determine the effectiveness of these devices in reducing the high negative thrust (drag) which accompanies power failure of this type of engine. Power failures were simulated by fuel cut-off, both without either device free to operate, and with each device free to operate singly. The investigation was made through an airspeed range from 50 to 230 mph. It was found that with neither device free to operate, the drag levels realized after power failures at airspeeds above 170 mph would impose vertical tail loads higher than those allowable for the YC-130, the airplane for which the test power package was designed. These levels were reached in approximately one second. The maximum drag realized after power failure was not appreciably altered by the use of the decoupler although the decoupler did put a limit on the duration of the peak drag. The controlled-feathering device maintained a level of essentially zero drag after power failure. The use of the decoupler in the YT-56A engine complicates windmilling air-starting procedures and makes it necessary to place operating restrictions on the engine to assure safe flight at low-power conditions,

An Inviscid Decoupled Method for the Roe FDS Scheme in the Reacting Gas Path of FUN3D

An approach is described to decouple the species continuity equations from the mixture continuity, momentum, and total energy equations for the Roe flux difference splitting scheme. This decoupling simplifies the implicit system, so that the flow solver can be made significantly more efficient, with very little penalty on overall scheme robustness. Most importantly, the computational cost of the point implicit relaxation is shown to scale linearly with the number of species for the decoupled system, whereas the fully coupled approach scales quadratically. Also, the decoupled method significantly reduces the cost in wall time and memory in comparison to the fully coupled approach. This work lays the foundation for development of an efficient adjoint solution procedure for high speed reacting flow.

Dynamical Decoupling of Crosstalk on Superconducting Qubit Devices

Current NISQ devices are prone to errors. In order to be used for practical applications or achieve fault-tolerant thresholds, strategies to suppress error rates will be needed to maximize the potential of noisy devices. Dynamical decoupling (DD) is one such strategy for suppressing — or at least alleviating — the effects of decoherence, in which sequences of pulses are applied to qubits to decouple their interaction with the environment. Through experimental runs performed on several Rigetti quantum computing units (QPUs), we first demonstrate that DD is capable of improving coherence times for isolated qubits, as well as suppressing errors caused by the ZZ coupling between pairs of qubits. Extending this framework to cycles containing2-qubit gates, we show that DD can be inserted to decouple qubits from crosstalk occurring during neighboring 2-qubit gates, and demonstrate the efficacy of this procedure on quantum approximate optimization algorithm (QAOA) circuits. We also explore the usage of tailored DD sequences for the suppression of characterized error channels. Steady-state decoupling and design of linear multivariable systems

A constructive criterion for decoupling the steady states of a linear time-invariant multivariable system is presented. This criterion consists of a set of inequalities which, when satisfied, will cause the steady states of a system to be decoupled. Stability analysis and a new design technique for such systems are given. A new and simple connection between single-loop and multivariable cases is found. These results are then applied to the compensation design for NASA STOL C-8A aircraft. Both steady-state decoupling and stability are justified through computer simulations.

In-flight simulation study of decoupled longitudinal controls for the approach and landing of a STOL aircraft

In this decoupled concept, the natural interactions of the flight variables were suppressed, and the pilot operated a separate controller for each (fore-and-aft control column for flight path angle without speed or pitch attitude change, for example). The handling qualities of the decoupled airplane were judged to be very favorable. The precise path control led to small touchdown point dispersion along with consistently low sink rates. The decoupled control system provided significantly better flying qualities than did conventional SAS applied to the same basic airframe.

A study of simplified methods for longitudinal control decoupling

Using an inflight simulator, a simple longitudinal decoupling concept was compared with conventional airplane characteristics for the approach and landing tasks. The decoupling system allowed the pilot to command flight path angle changes with the stick with little or no accompanying speed change; likewise, speed changes with only small accompanying flight path changes could be made with throttle only. The unique feature of the concept is that it is an open loop (that is, nonfeedback) control system. Results indicate that in calm air and up to moderate levels of turbulence the decoupling system provides a substantial reduction in pilot workload.

Decoupler pylon - A simple, effective wing/store flutter suppressor

As an alternative to alleviating wing/store flutter by conventional passive methods or by more advanced active control methods, a quasi-passive concept, referred to as the decoupler pylon, is investigated which combines desirable features of both methods. Passive soft-spring/damper elements are used to decouple wing modes from store pitch modes, and a low-power control system maintains store alignment under changing mean loads. It is shown by analysis and wind tunnel tests that the decoupler pylon provides substantial increase in flutter speed and makes flutter virtually insensitive to inertia and center-of-gravity location of the store.

Research on the application of a decoupling algorithm for structure analysis

The mathematical theory for decoupling mth-order matrix differential equations is presented. It is shown that the decoupling precedure can be developed from the algebraic theory of matrix polynomials. The role of eigenprojectors and latent projectors in the decoupling process is discussed and the mathematical relationships between eigenvalues, eigenvectors, latent roots, and latent vectors are developed. It is shown that the eigenvectors of the companion form of a matrix contains the latent vectors as a subset. The spectral decomposition of a matrix and the application to differential equations is given.

Mode decoupling during retrorefraction as an explanation for bizarre radar echoes from icy moons

The two concepts of mode decoupling and retrorefraction are combined to explain the strength, distribution, and other features of the radar echoes from Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto. A decoupling of two characteristic modes of propagation appears to be a key to an understanding of the anomalous distribution of power among the polarized components of the echoes. Causes of the decoupling are proposed and their morphological implications are introduced.

Modal decoupling insensitivity

This note deals with the design of an output feedback control system such that selected closed-loop eigenvalues are insensitive, while the corresponding eigenvectors preserve a prescribed decoupling under parameter variation. This results in restricting specified elements of an eigenvector to be insensitive, rather than the entire eigenvector. This requirement is henceforth referred to as modal decoupling insensitivity. Sufficient conditions for modal decoupling insensitivity are derived. These conditions offer the advantage of increased flexibility in eigenvector assignment, but the constraint on the feedback matrix is more restrictive. A numerical example is presented to illustrate the design procedure.

Disturbance and vibration isolation in space stations by means of mechanical decoupling

A decoupling approach to disturbance and vibration isolation in large space stations composed of modules interconnected by flexible members is proposed. A simplified mathematical model for the motion of the space station core and a laboratory module with both torsional vibration and translational motion decouplers is used in this study. The dynamic behavior of the model in the presence of decoupler friction is analyzed. Estimates for the maximum excursions of the laboratory module induced by various types of external disturbance are derived. The paper concludes with a simulation study involving the hard-docking of a space shuttle with a space station.

Decentralized control of large flexible structures by joint decoupling

This paper presents a novel method to design decentralized controllers for large complex flexible structures by using the idea of joint decoupling. Decoupling of joint degrees of freedom from the interior degrees of freedom is achieved by setting the joint actuator commands to cancel the internal forces exerting on the joint degrees of freedom. By doing so, the interactions between substructures are eliminated. The global structure control design problem is then decomposed into several substructure control design problems. Control commands for interior actuators are set to be localized state feedback using decentralized observers for state estimation. The proposed decentralized controllers can operate successfully at the individual substructure level as well as at the global structure level. Not only control design but also control implementation is decentralized. A two-component mass-spring-damper system is used as an example to demonstrate the proposed method.

Measurement of longitudinal relaxation times for spin-decoupled protons.

Description of an experimental method for the determination of the longitudinal relaxation time for spin-decoupled protons by a modified version of the saturation recovery technique reported by Van Geet and Hume (1965). The described method should facilitate relaxation studies of chemically shifted protons (or fluorines) and can be applied to more complicated spin systems with the aid of triple resonance and noise-decoupling techniques.

Decoupling in linear time-varying multivariable systems

The necessary and sufficient conditions for the decoupling of an m-input, m-output, linear time varying dynamical system by state variable feedback is described. The class of feedback matrices which decouple the system are illustrated. Systems which do not satisfy these results are described and systems with disturbances are considered. Some examples are illustrated to clarify the results.

Steady state decoupling and design of linear multivariable systems

A constructive criterion for decoupling the steady states of linear multivariable systems is developed. The criterion consists of n(n-1) inequalities with the type numbers of the compensator transfer functions as the unknowns. These unknowns can be chosen to satisfy the inequalities and hence achieve a steady state decoupling scheme. It turns out that pure integrators in the loops play an important role. An extended root locus design method is then developed to take care of the stability and transient response. The overall procedure is applied to the compensation design for STOL C-8A aircraft in the approach mode.
