Foldback current-limiting for hybrid regulator

Technique utilizes operational high gain amplifier, which greatly reduces temperature sensitivity of short circuit current, to amplify and subtract voltage across current sensing resistor from regulated output voltage. Small current sensing resistor may be used to eliminate power loss problem found in conventional circuits.

Experiments on current-driven three-dimensional ion sound turbulence. I - Return-current limited electron beam injection. II - Wave dynamics

Pulsed electron beam injection into a weakly collisional magnetized background plasma is investigated experimentally; properties of the electron beam and background plasma, as well as the low-frequency instabilities and wave dynamics, are discussed. The current of the injected beam closes via a field-aligned return current of background electrons. Through study of the frequency and wavenumber distribution, together with the electron distribution function, the low-frequency instabilities associated with the pulsed injection are identified as ion acoustic waves driven unstable by the return current. The frequency cut-off of the instabilities predicted from renormalized plasma turbulence theory, has been verified experimentally.

Astrophysical data on 5 eV to 1 keV radiation from the radiative decay of fundamental particles - Current limits and prospects for improvement

Line emission from the decay of fundamental particles, integrated over cosmological distances, can give rise to detectable spectral features in the diffuse astronomical background between 5 eV and 1 keV. Spectroscopic observations may allow these features to be separated from line emission from the numerous local sources of radiation. The current observational status and existing evidence for such features are reviewed. No definitive detections of nongalactic line features have been made. Several local sources of background mask the features at many wavelengths and confuse the interpretation of the data. No systematic spectral observations have been carried out to date. Upcoming experiments which can be expected to provide significantly better constraints on the presence of spectral features in the diffuse background from 5 eV to 1 keV are reviewed.

Limiting current in electron-beam welders

Damage to workpiece by excessive current in electron-beam welder is prevented by mechanism that accurately adjusts anode-to-cathode spacing. Mechanism is installed on standard Sciaky (or equivalent) electron-beam gun with only minimal modification. By turning knurled knob and observing digital readout of anode/cathode separation, machine operator adjusts welder for safe maximum current before welding begins.

Current Limitations on VLBI Accuracy

The contribution of VLBI to geophysics and geodesy arises from its ability to measure distances between stations in a network and to determine the orientation of stations in the network as well as the orientation of the network with respect to the external reference frame of extragalactic radio objects. Integrating nearly two decades of observations provides useful information about station positions and velocities and the orientation of the Earth, but the complications of the real world and the limitations of observing, modeling and analysis prevent recovery of all effects. Of the factors that limit the accuracy of seemingly straightforward geodetic parameters, the neutral propagation medium has been subject to the greatest scrutiny, but the treatment of the mapping function, the wet component and spatial/temporal inhomogeneities is still improving. These affect both the terrestrial scale and consistency over time. The modeling of non-secular site motions (tides and loading) has increased in sophistication, but there are some differences between the models and the observations. VLBI antennas are massive objects, so their behavior is quite unlike GPS monuments, but antenna deformations add some (generally) unmodeled signal. Radio sources used in geodetic VLBI observations are selected for strength and (relative) absence of structure, but apparent changes in position can leak into geodetic parameters. A linear rate of change of baseline or site parameters is the simplest model and its error improves with time span. However, in most cases the VLBI data distribution is insufficient to look for real non-linear behavior that might affect the average rate. A few sites have multiple VLBI antennas, and some show small differences in rate. VLBI intrinsically measures relative positions and velocities, but individual site positions and velocities are generally more useful. The creation of the VLBI terrestrial reference frame, which transforms relative information into individual results, is an empirical process that has intrinsic errors. While UT1 is uniquely measured by VLBI, the geographical distribution and availability of VLBI stations, especially in the southern hemisphere, and the consistency of the VLBI terrestrial reference frame may limit the accuracy of Earth orientation measurements. The effects of particular error sources on geodetic and geophysical parameters derived from VLBI data will be illustrated.

Linear and Nonlinear Analysis of Magnetic Bearing Bandwidth Due to Eddy Current Limitations

Finite element analysis was used to study the bandwidth of alloy hyperco50a and silicon iron laminated rotors and stators in magnetic bearings. A three dimensional model was made of a heteropolar bearing in which all the flux circulated in the plane of the rotor and stator laminate. A three dimensional model of a plate similar to the region of a pole near the gap was also studied with a very fine mesh. Nonlinear time transient solutions for the net flux carried by the plate were compared to steady state time harmonic solutions. Both linear and quasi-nonlinear steady state time harmonic solutions were calculated and compared. The finite element solutions for power loss and flux bandwidth were compared to those determined from classical analytical solutions to Maxwell's equations.

Using a Commercial Ethernet PHY Device in a Radiation Environment

This work involved placing a commercial Ethernet PHY on its own power boundary, with limited current supply, and providing detection methods to determine when the device is not operating and when it needs either a reset or power-cycle. The device must be radiation-tested and free of destructive latchup errors. The commercial Ethernet PHY's own power boundary must be supplied by a current-limited power regulator that must have an enable (for power cycling), and its maximum power output must not exceed the PHY's input requirements, thus preventing damage to the device. A regulator with configurable output limits and short-circuit protection (such as the RHFL4913, rad hard positive voltage regulator family) is ideal. This will prevent a catastrophic failure due to radiation (such as a short between the commercial device's power and ground) from taking down the board's main power. Logic provided on the board will detect errors in the PHY. An FPGA (field-programmable gate array) with embedded Ethernet MAC (Media Access Control) will work well. The error detection includes monitoring the PHY's interrupt line, and the status of the Ethernet's switched power. When the PHY is determined to be non-functional, the logic device resets the PHY, which will often clear radiation induced errors. If this doesn't work, the logic device power-cycles the FPGA by toggling the regulator's enable input. This should clear almost all radiation induced errors provided the device is not latched up.

Current to a moving cylindrical electrostatic probe

The current collection characteristics of a moving cylindrical Langmuir probe are evaluated for a range of probe speeds and potentials which are applicable to earth and planetary measurements. The current expressions derived include the cases of the general accelerated current, sheath area limited current, orbital motion limited current, and retarded current. For the orbital motion limited current, a simple algebraic expression is obtained which includes and generalizes the Mott-Smith and Langmuir expressions for both a stationary probe and a rapidly moving probe. For a rapidly moving probe a single formula adequately represents both the accelerated and the retarded current.

Characteristic parameters of superconductor-coolant interaction including high Tc current density limits

In the area of basic mechanisms of helium heat transfer and related influence on super-conducting magnet stability, thermal boundary conditions are important constraints. Characteristic lengths are considered along with other parameters of the superconducting composite-coolant system. Based on helium temperature range developments, limiting critical current densities are assessed at low fields for high transition temperature superconductors.

Thermal noise in space-charge-limited hole current in silicon

Present theories on noise in single-carrier space-charge-limited currents in solids have not been quantitatively substantiated by experimental evidence. To obtain such experimental verification, the noise in specially fabricated silicon structures is being measured and analyzed. The first results of this verification effort are reported.

Development of a Solid State Power Switch for the Cassini Spacecraft

The Cassini spacecraft uses a new hybrid device to replace the load switching relays used on previous missions. These hybrid devices provide additional functions such as circuit breaking, controlled voltage turn-on and current limiting features. The current limiting function makes an uninterruptible power system possible. This hybrid, the Solid State Power Switch (SSPS), performs the function of connecting the 192 Cassini loads to the spacecraft power bus in response to commands from the Command and Data subsystem.
