Materials processing in Space/Spacelab. FES/VCGS payload critical design review

A 25 mW He-Ne laser holographic recorder for recording the solution growth of triglycine sulfate crystals under low-zero gravity conditions is described. A systems engineering and design analysis, and mechanical and electrical design analyses of the equipmentation are presented. The equipment, fabricated for the Sl-3 flight on the space shuttle, was designed to take 300 holograms (two orthogonal views) on 50-235 film of each growth experiment. Specifications and capabilities for support module mechanical assemblies are lso presented.

Identification of Critical Design Points for the EAP of a Space-based Doppler Lidar Wind Sounder

The feasibility of making tropospheric wind measurements with a space-based Doppler lidar was studied by a number of agencies over the past 10-15 years. Currently NASA has a plan to launch such an instrument, the Laser Atmospheric Wind Sounder (LAWS), within the next decade. The design of the LAWS continues to undergo a series of iterations common to most instruments targeted for a space platform. In general, the constraints of available platform power, weight allowance, and project funds continue to change. With these changes the performance and design specifications also must change.

ROMPS critical design review. Volume 2: Robot module design documentation

The robot module design documentation for the Remote Operated Materials Processing in Space (ROMPS) experiment is compiled. This volume presents the following information: robot module modifications; Easylab commands definitions and flowcharts; Easylab program definitions and flowcharts; robot module fault conditions and structure charts; and C-DOC flow structure and cross references.

HELIOS Critical Design Review: Quality Assurance

The following is an account of the activities of the Quality Assurance (QA) department of the project management office highlighting some of the ways in which it controls QA of the subcontractors on one hand and reports on Quality to GfW (Gesellschaft fur Weltraumforschung) on the other hand. The basic document prepared by MBB (Messerschmitt-Bolkow-Blohm) for QA activities is 1. The QA plan based on GfW 002. The QA department is responsible moreover for monitoring and making decisions about the quality of parts and materials and the governing document for this activity is 2. The Parts and Materials Control Plan based on GfW 001 - the reliability program provisions, as well as GfW 002. A brief survey of the contents of the QA Plan is shown. It should be noted that QA activity dealing with parts procurement is partially covered in a separate presentation entitled "Hi-Rel Parts". Supplementary quality documents are shown.
