Synthesis and structural characterization of orthorhombic Cu 3– δ Sb ( δ ≈ 0.1) and hexagonal Cu 3 Sb 1–x In x (x ≈ 0.2) phases

Cu 3 Sb is a known copper-rich phase in the Cu–Sb binary phase diagram. It is reported to be dimorphic, with a low-temperature form adopting the orthorhombic Cu 3 Ti structure type (space group Pmmn , No. 59). The high-temperature form crystallizes in the cubic space group F m 3 - m $Fm‾{3}m$ (No. 225), and is isostructural with BiF 3 . Neither polymorph has been carefully characterized to date, with both structures being assigned to the respective structure type, but never refined. With this study, we provide structural evidence, based on single-crystal and powder X-ray diffraction data that the low-temperature orthorhombic phase exists with a significant amount of defects on one of the Cu-sites. As a result, its composition is not Cu 3 Sb, but rather Cu 3– δ Sb ( δ = 0.13(1)). The cubic form could not be accessed as a part of this study, but another Cu-rich phase, Cu 3 Sb ≈0.8 In ≈0.2 , was also identified. It adopts the hexagonal Ni 3 Sn structure type (space group P 6 3 / mmc , No. 194) and represents an In-substituted variant of a hitherto unknown structural modification of Cu 3 Sb. Whether the latter can exist as a binary phase, or what is the minimum amount of In inclusions needed to stabilize it remains to be determined. Measurements of the thermopower of Cu 3– δ Sb ( δ = 0.13(1)) were conducted in the range of 300–600 K and demonstrated a maximum value of ca. 50 μV/K at 600 K, indicative of a p -type transport mechanism. Electrical resistivity measurements for the same sample confirmed that it exhibits metallic-like behavior, with a room temperature value of 0.43 mΩ cm. Electronic structure calculations show the absence of a band gap. Thermal analysis was utilized to ascertain the congruent melting of both phases.

Structural Rearrangements of Subnanometer Cu Oxide Clusters Govern Catalytic Oxidation

Sub-nanometer metal oxide clusters are very important materials that are widely used, for example, in catalysis or electronic devices such as sensors. Hence, it is critical to understand the atomic structures and properties of sub-nanometer metal oxide clusters under a reactive gas environment, such as O 2 . We consider here experimentally accessible precise-size Cu clusters (Cu 4 ) supported on partially hydroxylated amorphous alumina and show that such clusters can access, in catalytic conditions at high temperature under a pressure of O 2 , a large ensemble of oxidized structures, representing a large variety of oxygen content, of geometries in link with the support, and of catalytic activities for oxidation reactions, as seen from their reducibilities. A grand canonical basin hopping method based on first-principles energy reveals an ensemble of 24 configurations for the Cu 4 O x cluster of low free energy, less than 0.8 eV above the global minimum. The low free energy ensemble consists of clusters of different stoichiometries, which are mainly Cu 4 O 3 and Cu 4 O 4 in the temperature range of 200–400 °C and under a pressure of 0.5 bar of O 2 . The presence of several competitive isomers at each composition implies that cluster fluxionality impacts the phase diagram, which should be ensemble-averaged. In terms of catalytic oxidation activity, Cu 4 O 3 isomers present highly variable O abstraction energy: the most stable isomers are inactive for alkane oxidative dehydrogenation, but isomerization to metastable isomers, that proceed with low barrier, enable to create active configurations with low O abstraction energy. O atoms with the lowest anionic character, and thus of more electrophilic nature, present the best oxidation capability. In contrast, all Cu 4 O 4 isomers show a low O abstraction energy and a high potential catalytic activity. Here, this manuscript demonstrates the unique structural and electronic properties of sub-nano Cu oxide clusters and illustrates the critical roles of configuration ensembles and rearrangement to highly reactive metastable cluster isomers in nanocatalysis.

Energetics of the nucleation and glide of disconnection modes in symmetric tilt grain boundaries

Grain boundaries (GBs) evolve by the nucleation and glide of disconnections, which are dislocations with a step character. In this work, motivated by recent success in predicting GB properties such as the shear coupling factor and mobility from the intrinsic properties of disconnections, we develop a systematic method to calculate the energy barriers for the nucleation and glide of individual disconnection modes under arbitrary driving forces and a quasi-2D setting. This method combines tools from bicrystallography to enumerate disconnection modes and the Nudged elastic band (NEB) method to calculate their energetics, yielding minimum energy paths and atomistic mechanisms for the nucleation and glide of each disconnection mode. We apply the method to accurately predict shear coupling factors of $[001]$ symmetric tilt grain boundaries in Cu. Particular attention is paid to the boundaries where the dislocation-based disconnection nucleation model produces incorrect nucleation barriers. We demonstrate that the method can accurately compute energy barriers and predict shear-coupling factors in the low-temperature regime. For certain disconnection modes in which the assumptions underlying our method do not hold, we report upper bounds on the energy barriers for disconnection nucleation and glide. In addition, the NEB trajectories reveal interesting phenomena such as the dissociation of a higher energy mode into lower energy modes, and in some cases, shear coupling being mediated by partial disconnections, wherein the GB structure temporarily changes to a metastable state before reverting back to its original structure.
