Advances in Transformative Science Measurements with Small Satellites

Small satellites have become an accepted platform for enabling high-quality science measurements and observations. NASA missions have leveraged advances in sensor miniaturization, technology innovations, and new small satellite mission architectures to support high spatial and temporal measurements, continuity measurements, and constellations in response to science objectives described in NASA’s Decadal Surveys. Across six divisions of the Science Mission Directorate (SMD), over 12 years, SMD has funded 88 CubeSat/ SmallSat Missions and 59 Studies to date. Currently, SMD has 53 small spacecraft science missions (87spacecraft) in implementation or formulation. This paper provides the background of efforts to promote the implementation of small satellites within NASA as a balanced portfolio for the agency’s science, technology, and exploration goals. We include analysis of SmallSat awards and trends funded by SMD through Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (ROSES), Small Innovative Missions for Planetary Exploration (SIMPLEx), and Small Explorer (SMEX) and Medium Explorer (MIDEX) calls over the last 12years. The data source of this assessment is a subset of the NASA SmallSat Coordination Group Database, a collection of all known funded NASA SmallSat and CubeSat missions and studies. This paper also provides an overview of small satellite programs and selected missions from SMD’s divisions: Astrophysics, Heliophysics, Earth Science, and Planetary Science, and describes SMD’s efforts in fostering an incremental and continuous path to achieve high-priority science through transformative science measurements. This presentation recognizes the latest observations and trends of the NASA CubeSat / SmallSat Science missions with masses ranging between 1kg to 500kg.

A New Model of Dry Firn Densification Constrained By Continuous Strain Measurements Near South Pole

Converting measurements of ice-sheet surface elevation change to mass change requires measurements of accumulation and knowledge of the evolution of the density profile in the firn. Most firn-densification models are tuned using measured depth-density profiles, a method which is based on an assumption that the density profile in the firn is invariant through time. Here we present continuous measurements of firn-compaction rates in 12 boreholes near the South Pole over a two-year period. To our knowledge, these are the first continuous measurements of firn compaction on the Antarctic Plateau. We use the data to derive a new firn-densification algorithm framed as a constitutive relationship. We also compare our measurements to compaction rates predicted by several existing firn densification models. Results indicate that an activation energy of 60 kJ mol (−1), a value within the range used by current models, best predicts the seasonal cycle in compaction rates on the Antarctic Plateau. Our results suggest models can predict firn-compaction rates with at best 7% uncertainty and cumulative firn compaction on a two year timescale with at best 8% uncertainty.

Stratospheric measurements of continuous absorption near 2400 per cm

Measurements of continuous absorption near 2400 per cm by N2 and CO2 over long path lengths in the lower stratosphere are presented. The continua were measured in a stratospheric solar spectrum obtained during sunset with a balloon-borne Michelson interferometer in the 2380-2500 per cm region, and transmittances were calculated by ratioing the amplitudes to those of a high-sun spectrum in order to eliminate the wavelength dependence of the measured flux. Comparison of the measured transmittances with those calculated for a multilayered atmospheric model using laboratory absorption measurements results in a fair agreement, and reveals the primary component of the absorption throughout most of the range to be N2, with the CO2 contribution equal to that of N2 only at the CO2 band head. In this region, the shape of the continuum is very sensitive to the sub-Lorentzian line shape assumed in the calculations, and so, if the shape of the N2 continuum at low temperatures can be determined through laboratory measurements, may be used to infer air-broadened far-wing CO2 line shape.

A density-based continuous local symmetry measure

Although continuous symmetry theory has attracted increasing attention in modern chemistry, local symmetry remains under-investigated. As a consequence, the relationship between symmetry and chemical behavior is often obscured, limiting the practical use of fuzzy symmetry measures. Here, in this study, we introduce a novel framework for evaluating local symmetry based on electron density localization and present continuous symmetry representations for several representative molecules. Our approach not only quantitatively captures global symmetry but also reveals distinctive features of symmetry in a local chemical environment. The related concept, local chirality or chirotopicity, is also discussed. Overall, the proposed local symmetry and chirality measures provide valuable insights into molecular structure and structure–property relationships.

A prefiltering version of the Kalman filter with new numerical integration formulas for Riccati equations

A prefiltering version of the Kalman filter is derived for both discrete and continuous measurements. The derivation consists of determining a single discrete measurement that is equivalent to either a time segment of continuous measurements or a set of discrete measurements. This prefiltering version of the Kalman filter easily handles numerical problems associated with rapid transients and ill-conditioned Riccati matrices. Therefore, the derived technique for extrapolating the Riccati matrix from one time to the next constitutes a new set of integration formulas which alleviate ill-conditioning problems associated with continuous Riccati equations. Furthermore, since a time segment of continuous measurements is converted into a single discrete measurement, Potter's square root formulas can be used to update the state estimate and its error covariance matrix. Therefore, if having the state estimate and its error covariance matrix at discrete times is acceptable, the prefilter extends square root filtering with all its advantages, to continuous measurement problems.

Continuous performance measurement in flight systems

The desired response of many man machine control systems can be formulated as a solution to an optimal control synthesis problem where the cost index is given and the resulting optimal trajectories correspond to the desired trajectories of the man machine system. Optimal control synthesis provides the reference criteria and the significance of error information required for performance measurement. The synthesis procedure described provides a continuous performance measure (CPM) which is independent of the mechanism generating the control action. Therefore, the technique provides a meaningful method for online evaluation of man's control capability in terms of total man machine performance.

Improved formula for continuous-wave measurements of ultrasonic phase velocity

An improved formula for continuous-wave ultrasonic phase velocity measurements using contact transducers is derived from the transmission line theory. The effect of transducer-sample coupling bonds is considered for measurements of solid samples even though it is often neglected because of the difficulty of accurately determining the bond thickness. Computer models show that the present formula is more accurate than previous expressions. Laboratory measurements using contacting transducers with the present formula are compared to measurements using noncontacting (hence effectively correction-free) capacitive transducers. The results of the experiments verify the validity and accuracy of the new formula.

Precise T and F intercomparison via VLF phase measurements

Continuous phase recording of the 16kHz transmission from GBR (UK) are being made and published midday phase data of GBR are received regularly from laboratories in the US, FGR, and UK. The local time scale (UTC, India), at the National Physical Laboratory in New Delhi, and those at the foreign laboratories are intercompared using the VLF phase data. A major factor which limits the accuracy of long term comparison is the seasonal variation in the VLF over delay over long paths. By taking into account the seasonal delay variations in a semiempirical way, the accuracy of time and frequency comparisons can be improved. Over a one year period, accuracy of a few parts in 10 to the 14th power in frequency and 1 to 2 micron sec in time were obtained. The relative frequency offset difference between UTC, (India) and UTC (PTB, Germany) of (7.0 + or - 0.1) x 10 to the -13 power agrees well with that obtained in a satellite experiment.

Oxygen consumption measurements during continual centrifugation of mice.

A simple method is described for measurement of metabolism of conscious, unrestrained animals, during chronic centrifugation or other conditions of isolation (23.75 hr/day) from the investigators in an essentially normal atmospheric environment for as long as seven days. This involves telemetry of pressure changes in a metabolic chamber. At 7 G's, increased O2 intake lasting two to seven days and a decreased excursion of the day-night difference were measured for male white mice with less effect or even an opposite effect at lower fields. Base-line measurements of metabolic rate per mouse are less affected by animal size than expected from the surface area law.

Detection of crustal deformation from the Landers earthquake sequence using continuous geodetic measurements

The first measurements are reported for a major earthquake by a continuously operating GPS network, the permanent GPS Genetic ARRY (PGGA) in southern California. The Landers and Big Bear earthquakes of June 28, 1992 were monitored by daily observations. Ten weeks of measurements indicate significant coseismic motion at all PGGA sites, significant postseismic motion at one site for two weeks after the earthquakes, and no significant preseismic motion. These measurements demonstrate the potential of GPS monitoring for precise detection of precursory and aftershock seismic deformation in the near and far field.
