Niobium in the clean limit: An intrinsic type-I superconductor

Niobium is one of the most researched superconductors, both theoretically and experimentally. It is enormously significant in all branches of superconducting applications, from powerful magnets to quantum computing. It is therefore imperative to understand its fundamental properties in great detail. In this work, we use the results of recent microscopic calculations of anisotropic electronic, phonon, and superconducting properties, and apply a thermodynamic criterion for the type of superconductivity, more accurate and straightforward than a conventional Ginzburg-Landau parameter κ-based delineation, to show that pure niobium is a type-I superconductor in the clean limit. However, disorder (impurities, defects, strain, stress) pushes it to become a type-II superconductor.

Clean 2D superconductivity in a bulk van der Waals superlattice

Alternative route to a 2D superconductor Single layers of transition metal dichalcogenides exhibit exotic properties, including superconductivity. The usual route to obtaining such samples is to exfoliate a three-dimensional (3D) crystal. Devarakonda et al. instead grew a superlattice comprising alternating layers of the transition metal dichalcogenide hexagonal NbS 2 and the material Ba 3 NbS 5 (see the Perspective by Schoop). The inert Ba 3 NbS 5 layers serve to dissociate the superconducting NbS 2 layers from one another, resulting in 2D superconductivity with high carrier mobility. The combination of high mobility and reduced dimensionality may give rise to exotic quantum phases. Science , this issue p. 231 see also p. 170

Protonic ceramic materials for clean and sustainable energy: advantages and challenges

In recent years, the hydrogen economy has been strongly favoured by governmental and industrial bodies worldwide. A tremendous number of papers are published every year on different aspects of protonic ceramic electrochemical cells (PCECs) due to their lower operation temperature, easier reversible operation, and brighter prospects for further development. While new progress is being made continuously, many critical challenges remain. The effort on PCEC investigation could be more aligned for greater collective impact, e.g. the academic community could devote more effort to overdue critical problems but less to incremental improvements. This review aims to provide some insightful perspectives on critical challenges facing the development of PCECs, to sort out priorities in future effort, and to suggest promising directions to pursue. In this way, it is hoped that the technical readiness level of PCECs might advance more quickly, toward field demonstrations and commercialization for a clean and sustainable energy era.

Quiet Clean Short-haul Experimental Engine (QCSEE) clean combustor test report

A component pressure test was conducted on a F101 PFRT combustor to evaluate the emissions levels of this combustor design at selected under the wing and over the wing operating conditions for the quiet clean short haul experimental engine (QCSEE). Emissions reduction techniques were evaluated which included compressor discharge bleed and sector burning in the combustor. The results of this test were utilized to compare the expected QCSEE emissions levels with the emission goals of the QCSEE engine program.

Quiet Clean Short-haul Experimental Engine (QCSEE). Double-annular clean combustor technology development report

A sector combustor technology development program was conducted to define an advanced double annular dome combustor sized for use in the quiet clean short haul experimental engine (QCSEE). A design which meets the emission goals, and combustor performance goals of the QCSEE engine program was developed. Key design features were identified which resulted in substantial reduction in carbon monoxide and unburned hydrocarbon emission levels at ground idle operating conditions, in addition to very low nitric oxide emission levels at high power operating conditions. Their significant results are reported.

Mars 2020 sample caching system contamination: how to clean hardware and keep it clean

The Mars 2020 Rover will have the capability to collect and cache samples for potential Mars sample return. Specifically, the sample caching system (SCS) is designed for coring Mars samples and acquiring regolith samples as well as handling, sealing and caching on Mars. As the potential first Martian samples that could be returned to Earth, assuring low levels of terrestrial contamination is of the utmost concern. In developing the SCS, the project prioritizes limiting sample contamination in organic, inorganic and biological areas. The focus of this paper is on the strategies being implemented to clean the assemble the sampling hardware to meet and maintain stringent contamination requirements.

Clean Energy and Microgrid Opportunities to Make Electricity Affordable, Reliable, and Clean in New Orleans

The City of New Orleans, Louisiana, is participating in the U.S. Department of Energy's (DOE) Communities Local Energy Action Program (LEAP) Pilot, which is supporting 24 communities across the United States in their efforts to transition to clean energy to improve energy reliability, lower energy costs, and strengthen local economies. Communities LEAP is specifically open to low-income, energy-burdened communities that are also experiencing either direct environmental justice impacts, or direct economic impacts from a shift away from historical reliance on fossil fuels.
